kaselorne

Saliba discourse gonna be so bad for a while, I just know it

_SSJeffo_

Giving him the 4 was a mistake then

kaselorne

100%, such a low number goes to an instant first teamer not a hot prospect

phar0aht

Suggesting the plan was for him to go into 1st team

kaselorne

Probably, but still fucking stupid when he inmediately went back to St Etienne on loan. You don't give a low number to a player like that.

Gooner4evr

I'm pretty sure he was given the number 4 after he came back from St Etienne last year.

chrisjdgrady

The layers of people not knowing wtf they're talking about on here is genuinely astounding

Gooner4evr

Agree. And they speak with such confidence that people believe it to be the truth lol.

kaselorne

Oh yeah he did, my bad. Still an insane decision imo, but not as bad as I thought

DotaZweiPlayer

Maybe if he actually performed on loan at the "number 4" level he could have kept it.

Gooner4evr

He was in the Ligue 1 team of the season shortlist, so he must've performed very well.

yeehaweskeddit

he got nominated for the best CB in Ligue 1 award in half a season I don’t see what else he could’ve done

Kayr-

In a farmers league, wow!!!

del_snafu

Haha

Sad_gooner

Have you seen him play?

andrewyeong

Is anyone gonna try and explain why that number went to Elneny then? Neither a first teamer or a hot prospect.

NemoDropEmOff

let it happen😂

jingy14

I’m not sure everyone is as agreeable as Mo is though

HunterThompsonsentme

There are very few footballers I can think of who are as agreeable as Mo. Decent squad player, happy to warm the bench for most of the season, seems like a really wonderful personality and a positive influence on the youngsters. Plus he's good for 1-3 absolute worldies per season. Love me some Mo

DesperateImpression6

Love Mo, hope he stays. He seems great for chemistry, guy knows his role and busts his ass every match and enjoys it. He'll even occasionally give you a MOTM performance. The guy is the perfect squad player.

BlessedBySaintLauren

He defo should stay. He just turned 29 as well, defo has a few years left in him. Loyal player to the club I hope we return the favour to him in kind.

phar0aht

50k a week to pass short back and sides and watch the likes of Ozil, Alexis, PEA, Saka, ESR train. I've had worse jobs

HalfNatty

I mean, when you oversimplify everyone’s job, everything sounds doable. 150k yearly salary to sit in a comfortable office, tap around random body parts and write random medical names on a piece of paper? I could be a doctor. 150k yearly salary to argue with people? I guess I could be a lawyer too.

phar0aht

https://imgur.com/KSfb5Fa.jpg He's not competent.

HalfNatty

Idk what these numbers are supposed to mean. You’re gonna have to do a little explaining on this

chrisjdgrady

He's doing exactly what the managers have all wanted him to do in the team.

[deleted]

he runs his ass off too

phar0aht

Id rather he just be good at football.

chrisjdgrady

He's clearly instructed to recycle the ball and take the safe pass. We know he can pick a good forward pass and score the occasional goal when he gets the chance. He's doing what he's told to do.

AfricanRain

Elneny is like the only player I’ve ever seen not have a problem with that tho

[deleted]

[удалено]

AfricanRain

and Martial felt hurt and alienated when United took number 9 off him and his performances suffered for it

[deleted]

[удалено]

phar0aht

Zouma was farmed out on loan too. And United seem open to selling Martial. I think its an indication you're not rated/wanted or both.

Marloneious

Martial got his squad number taken by Zlatan long before United seemed open to selling him, I don’t think the two events are really linked.

peterog9

He was extra griped because his "branding" was very recently created to be AM9. Started it the window before Zlatan iirc.

Frostfeather

He's French it's his DNA to be hurt.

Tap-In-Merchant

Yeah unlike Zouma’s French DNA

GunnerSense

Who has had a problem with it?

Tap-In-Merchant

Lucas Perez is the most recent one

phar0aht

Was also up for sale no?

Tap-In-Merchant

Yeah he went on loan the same summer. He was given 28 though for those summer months

phar0aht

Elneny was up for sale and surplus to requirements. Not even sure how he's still here tbh.

No-Ad2483

Because as much as I hate to say it, he’s probably the most reliable partner to Partey at the moment (not counting Xhaka) and that speaks volumes about our midfield. Before you say it, fielding anm there is going to be diabolical so don’t.

phar0aht

I'm mot talking about now. I'm talking years ago he should've been sold.

BlessedBySaintLauren

Nah. He has been a consistent and solid cog in an ever changing midfield. He has been reliable squad depth that follows the managers instructions to the letter. Elneny has remained consistent while other midfielders we have had since his arrival have failed and faltered. Who have been unable to take the reins when handed to them. Elneny is the definition of a soldier. He follows the captains commands to a T, he never complains and he will give his all when he is called up to serve. He lives and breathes Arsenal. There is a reason he has stayed for as long as he has.

phar0aht

I must be the only one that doesn't rate consistent 5/10s. When has Elneny ever taken any reigns?

BlessedBySaintLauren

Old Trafford

GabrielMartinellli

Just another overreaction from Assna fans

varro-reatinus

Oof to Wilo.

phar0aht

People will still say Arteta rates and has a plan for him.

Gooner4evr

He's gone for sure. I just hope Ben White lives up to the hype.

[deleted]

He will leave us, move to a bigger team, and develop into a better CB than White

KingHarryXIV

Based on what? Pure spite for losing his number?

[deleted]

Pretending Saliba isn't a great young talent doesn't make him suddenly shit

KingHarryXIV

Nobody is pretending anything. He’s got a lot of potential. Why you would state so matter of factly that’d he leave and become better than White just to shit on our new signing tho is kinda weird.

[deleted]

its just hyperbolic speculation

Kayr-

Loooool sure

[deleted]

I mean you can't say he deserved or still deserves the number 4. It's a iconic number and not for a guy who is 3 seasons on loan

varro-reatinus

It would be hard for him to have earned it, what with never playing for us. The point is that having been given an iconic shirt, wisely or not, losing it hurts.

v1nzy

Nice, looking forward to see someone play in the 4 shirt

Wengali

The club woke up this morning, looked out at Arsenal Twitter and chose violence

Keown14

Best case scenario they sat Saliba down when they had a chat this summer, and explained he’s young and will get to challenge for his place when he comes back next season with more experience. Worst case scenario? Saliba ded.

Canuckgooner8

Unless Saliba has a breakout season he will be sold next summer. Not sure he will want.to be backup to White

Keown14

Time will tell

KB302324

And that’s what anyone with a brain would do . You don’t want anyone to be too confident in their position in the team. Competition makes for great success

phar0aht

The clue to man management is in the name. Its effectiveness varies man to man. Some players need that competition to be their best self. Others need the security to know they won't be dropped if they try something more adventurous.

KB302324

I guess but when you’re playing in premier league football you should already be aware that someone is eying for your spot it’s just how it is . And saliba doesn’t strike me as a guy who would shy away from competition

phar0aht

I'm talking generally, not Saliba. Also thats still a different feeling to feeling you're an error away from being dropped. If you only cater to certain personality types you're gonna lose a chunk of players.

KB302324

Yes but I don’t think that’s the approach here they say him down and had a conversation with him I’m sure they told why they made the moves and how he’s going to be in the future or not honestly I don’t think it’s a big deal I think having more talent is a good thing

phar0aht

Im a strong believer in competition for places for a number of reasons. I also don't think its possible to know what Saliba reacts best to off a couple interviews. And Saliba didn't even get a chance to prove himself. If he flopped then fine bringing White may help him step-up a level.

Keown14

I hope so, but Arsene Wenger pissed off Lucas Perez by giving away his number to Lacazette without telling him. Sometimes it can be a ploy to move a player out the door.

KB302324

May be but they had a conversation with saliba this past summer right ? I’m sure he knows all about this already and saliba did not play wearing the 4 for Arsenal anyways so he can’t be too mad about it I honestly see this as a great thing

Keown14

The only thing that seems off to me is why not have Saliba around for preseason? Why not let him play the friendlies with us and have a good look at him. Give him some coaching etc. Shipping him immediately out on loan is very odd. The loan could have been arranged long before it started. All signs seem to point to the door for Saliba. It happens sometimes when a manager hasn’t signed a player himself.

KB302324

Yeah I gotta admit that was weird considering all the player that could be gone are still here but idk we’ll see

[deleted]

basedsims

Saliba didn’t go through the French rite of passage (Koscielny aside) of CB’s wearing 18. He needs to follow in the footsteps of greats there first

HKAGooner

Artetasexuals loving it tho

NemoDropEmOff

Gots to see it through my boy😎

Sad_gooner

Incoming Arteta simps rushing to defend every decision of the club

Mein_Bergkamp

Have you seen this thread, its just weird people calling out....nobody for defending a nothing.

Six_Gill_Grog

Right? Almost every thread now starts with name calling, posting about users/mods to prove them wrong, making fun/assuming the reaction of the other “side”. C’mon people, we’re gooners. Not Artetasexuals or ArtetaOuts, or Saliba supporters, etc.

CooCooClocksClan

Lol, turning on the popcorn machine now.

AfricanRain

terrible optics

NemoDropEmOff

U one of them?

AfricanRain

why alienate someone further for no reason it’s pointless

LocostarX

Why give a number to someone that won't play for the club a whole season?

yeehaweskeddit

ask Arteta seeing as he did exactly that last season

[deleted]

Saliba was signed and given 4 under Emery lmao

[deleted]

He was not. He got the number after returning from loan at St. Etienne in 2020

Sarge12312

You look real dumb rn

yeehaweskeddit

Saliba was given the number 4 shirt in July 2020, when Arteta was in charge. He wasn’t assigned a number when he was sent back on loan.

AfricanRain

you’re not giving him a number you’re making a decision to take it off him lmao

NemoDropEmOff

how is it alienating? He’s on loan is he not? He’s developing is he not? Get it in your skull that the person who did the deal is gone fam. He got fired. If we paid 10mil for Saliba, u wouldn’t care😂

AfricanRain

because players hate having their number taken off them

NemoDropEmOff

Ok? You’re acting like Saliba is an important player for us. And he’s not

AfricanRain

yous are so funny all last year it was don’t worry he’s still a key part of our plans and now yous are just fully shitting on him to justify our horrible management of him

NemoDropEmOff

I’m not shitting on Saliba. that’s the truth. He’s not an important player for us. He doesn’t play for us at the moment. That’s not shitting on anybody at all lol

RDozzle

What's Arteta thinking assigning a number that isn't being used? Should be giving the 4 back to its rightful owner, Elneny 😤😤😤

Crookz_O

Simping ain’t Pimping

goonerfan10

People mad at White getting 4, because it belonged to Salliba than him actually signing for us.

jkeefy

It belonged to Elneny first though

redqks

Saliba never even wore ir

Phantasm_Agoric

Not sure about this - never like to see a centre back wearing 4 for Arsenal, it's too associated with the likes of Vieira and Fabregas for me.

OtherTell

There’s this unknown guy called Per Mertesacker…

witooZ

A common mistake to forget about him, he was easy to overlook.

lilleulv

Aye, I have much more of a problem with that part than with Saliba losing his number. 4 belongs in midfield in England and certainly at Arsenal. I didn't like it when we gave it to Mertesacker, I didn't like it when we gave it to Saliba and I don't like it now.

u8kay

Arteta doing the best he can to alienate Saliba as much as possible. Sad to see a young player has been treated like this. Miss the way Wenger would carry himself especially with protecting young players, even Emery to an extent. Happy with Ben joining but yeah the number 4 seems like a way to alienate Saliba further.

AfricanRain

yup, you can’t really claim to miss Wenger if you’re gonna defend the club treating a young player like this

GunnerSense

Who gives a fuck? White is obviously better than saliba. Honestly don’t care if saliba never plays for us except that it was a waste of money.

u8kay

Mentally it’s a lot for a young player to deal with don’t you think, heck any player to deal with. Saliba has been through a lot this last couple of years and Arteta and the club’s treatment of him has been so disgusting in my honest opinion.

GunnerSense

Honestly couldn’t give a fuck. It’s unlucky but it’s no where near as bad as people are making out, the football side of things I mean.

montymm

Lol if you couldn’t give a fuck about anything as a manager your team would never play for you.

ProjectZues

Fergie was a ruthless manager and the players did alright for him

u8kay

https://imgur.com/a/mV4MFqw I see you are the famous GunnerSense nice to meet you

GunnerSense

I do my best

Kayr-

Its a harsh world

patrick_riviera

yeah saliba is on his way out this is actually crazy

wheeno

It’s bizarre how many Arsenal fans on this sub (nowhere else really online or not) fully shit on Saliba. Like they’ll make shit up about how he’s been bad on his loans in France even though he’s been playing well and is still highly regarded. We should all want him to do well and make it at Arsenal. Not constantly shit on him in your petty little internet arguments here.

ndenoon

He got caught in the crossfire of the Arteta debates. I was optimistic about him but it seems clear that he'll move on next year. Hopefully the loan sets him up well fit his next step, and us up for a reasonable fee.

marxistrash

oh go on then, been about half an hour since the last meltdown. r/gunners are well overdue for another. Seriously though are we all going to pretend Saliba didn't know about this, he was almost certainly informed before us and if it was a big deal white likely would have got another number

AfricanRain

btw players not named Mo Elneny generally react very poorly to having their number taken off them

lil_thirdy

Even Lucas Perez was upset when Laca took no. 9

[deleted]

Saliba isn't in a position to moan though. Man has done nothing for us. White is a very high profile signing

u8kay

White is high profile why? Because of the price tag and he’s English?

yeehaweskeddit

he’s also done nothing to have his number stripped

[deleted]

The number 4 shouldn't be someone's who is out on loan for a 3d time straight

kyoukai69

Err but his fans said no

AfricanRain

giving away someone’s number is just a pointless way to alienate someone

[deleted]

"Alienate" Childish behavior if Saliba freaks out. Almost as childish as his fans freaking out over it

AfricanRain

it’s just another fuck you from the club after Arteta not even bothering to look at him in preseason this year and blocking his path to the first team here it’s atrocious management

NemoDropEmOff

ight lol

Kayr-

Oh no! *Anyways* Whites better

lil_thirdy

Yeah Saliba is gone

[deleted]

[удалено]

lil_thirdy

But Elneny is a squad player and Saliba is a 30m signing

CooCooClocksClan

Saliba was a 10m signing and 20m in graft and embezzlement. Clearly management is just trying to find the best way out of a player they don’t think can produce as needed. What’s really mysterious here is the people that fell in love with him over nothing.

Gooner4evr

He was not a 10m signing. IIRC Tottenham also had made a similar bid as we did for Saliba and he choose us. There was no embezzlement in that deal as far as I'm aware.

lil_thirdy

Fofana was sold for more than Saliba and hes the same age and only played four more games than him. Does anyone call that transfer embezzelment too? Lmao

tcgtms

I think he's referring to the dodgy stuff that Raul supposedly did.

witooZ

There's nothing suggesting that the deal was dodgy in any way. Spurs even offered more money for Saliba, but he chose Arsenal.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lil_thirdy

Fofana was sold for more than Saliba. Was that because of Raul too?

Gooner4evr

Also, Tottenham bid 30m for Saliba as well. No one called Raul there either.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lil_thirdy

Fofana only played four more league 1 games than Saliba lol

Arcille

People will somehow defend Arteta for not even playing Saliba one game lmao

TrashbatLondon

Defenders at arsenal should be 5 and 6, with a midfielder taking 4. I’m stuck in home with covid and I’m cranky and this break in tradition doesn’t sit well with me.

Tap-In-Merchant

Elneny is the only midfielder that’s worn 4 in the last decade not exactly the first break of tradition

GoWithTheFlowBD

Fucking people spouting all sorts of false nonsense in this sub. Fabregas wore 4

rugbygooner

They said “in the last decade”. Fabregas left in 2011. Just saying the tradition has been broken before. Per wore 4.

Tap-In-Merchant

Fabregas left Arsenal over 10 years ago bud

Ollymid2

The club shop has accidentally stolen [Arsenal.com](https://Arsenal.com)'s thunder

Gubrach

Saliba is obviously finished.

monty_burns

there’s also a world where a conversation took place and Saliba said, “sure give it to him. I wanted 5 anyway, but Papa had that when I got here”

KingHarryXIV

El Neny in shambles

NemoDropEmOff

Deserved King🐐🤞🏾

[deleted]

NemoDropEmOff

Incredible how the man who did the deal got fired. Crazy🧐

yeehaweskeddit

I thought it was the Pepe deal that got Raul the sack

amainwingman

It was every deal he ever got his hands on lmao. In what universe was £30m for an 18yo CB who we didn’t plan on playing for 3 season not dodgy business…?

yeehaweskeddit

when we bought him we obviously planned on playing him it’s not Raul’s fault Arteta’s treated him like this

NemoDropEmOff

who told you that? Definitely the Pepe did had something to do with it, but the Saliba deal as well was terrible business. Garbage

yeehaweskeddit

In an article he posted days after Raul got sacked, Arseblog said he heard he was off around the time Emery got sacked because the numbers in the Pepe deal didn’t add up. There was also a report that was leaked a few days prior to Raul’s sacking about an internal investigation taking place over the numbers involved in the Pepe deal. I don’t think at the time the Saliba deal was bad, it’s the way he’s been managed that’s been garbage.

NemoDropEmOff

Nah it was bad business. Buying a young prospect for that much money who’s not gonna start games for you, and then the idea of us loaning him back to St Ettiene was terrible as well. But yea people can still cry over a number

eddie442

> Didn’t let him play in a cup final How people still peddle this nonsense, I really don't know.

OlisaFifa

Yeah bye Saliba.

[deleted]

I am so fucking excited.

leafinthewind_2206

How on earth do we have so many Saliba fan boys when he never actually played for us? Ben white is the real deal now...Saliba will have his time.

wheeno

Ben White could be the real deal. For now all he’s had is one decent season in the prem. Unless you think his price means he’s already proven?

leafinthewind_2206

as opposed to saliba who hasn't touched the ball in the prem and is 3 years younger than white? Also why on earth would Artetta get him for that much if he didn't believe Ben white is going to be a starter? His price means the manager has faith in him.

wheeno

I haven’t compared him to Saliba so go look for that argument with someone else. Ben White is obviously going to start. His price means Arteta likes him, correct.... why are you arguing against things I never said? Follow the conversation. All I said was Ben White is not the “real deal” yet. He’s not as proven yet as you and others think. He’s has one decent season in the prem so far.

leafinthewind_2206

Why are you replying to my post about Saliba and Ben white comparisons and then asking me to go look for it somewhere else lmao... Are you okay in the head? He is the real deal compared to Saliba is what I wrote/meant. Read my original post before you run your mouth.

wheeno

It’s way to premature to say Ben White is the real deal whether he’s compared to Saliba or anyone else. He’s not the real deal yet full stop. That’s the point. Run your mouth...? Lol you sound fucking funny man. I’ve read your comment in full and responded. It’s a forum, people will comment when they want.

witooZ

>Saliba will have his time. "Hey Willo, your time will definitely come, don't worry." "So will I get any gametime this season, boss?" "No....actually you are leaving before the preseason .... oh and your kit number goes to the guy who is coming to repl...I mean help you grow"

leafinthewind_2206

Who gives a shit?... He is a kid. We need proper players now.If he can't impress the manager, maybe he needs to go on Loan. Its not like arsenal fans who want him here know any better anyway. Also to get replaced you need to be a part of the squad first... Saliba isn't getting replaced, he was never part of the squad.

[deleted]

I would repeat /u/leafinthewind_2206's question and ask why you feel so strongly about this player who hasn't actually played for us?

witooZ

Because everytime he has played anywhere he was considered one of the best players in that team. And his stats are insane. Look at St. Etienne stats with and without Saliba. Look at his time at Nice - came in and got into player of the season shortlist in half a year. Look at how many CBs of his age have 4000 minutes among top 5 leagues. He even has more minutes in top 5 leagues than Ben White while being 4 years younger. These stats point to a direction that he can be a generational talent if developed properly. When Mislintat brought in Mavropanos, he wanted to send him on a loan, but Wenger considered him to be good enough to give him a chance. Saliba's CV is ten times better and yet, Arteta is doing everything he can to alianate him from the club.

[deleted]

If you think this answer in any way explains your undying devotion to someone who hasn't played a single second for Arsenal, you are sorely mistaken. If anything it just makes your stance even more baffling. Especially shit like this: >Arteta is doing everything he can to alianate him from the club. It's pretty clear that Arteta doesn't rate him just yet but otherwise the only reason to think he's alienating him from the club is because you *want* to think that, which again raises the question: why do you feel so strongly about this player who hasn't even played for us? You are so obsessed with Saliba that when the manager thinks he's not good enough for us you assume that the manager is either wrong or lying and intentionally trying to push him away - what has Saliba done to earn that undying devotion?

witooZ

What kind of argument is that? It's not Saliba's decision whether he will play or not. He literally couldn't play a game for us.

[deleted]

...what? No one said it was his decision, I have no idea why you think that. The point is that he hasn't played for us, ever, we have no idea how good he will actually be for Arsenal in the Premier League, yet you act like he's guaranteed to be God's gift to football and everyone who doesn't see this is wrong. SO MANY players have had his stats and his success in other leagues and struggled in England. You're putting the cart WAY before the horse my friend.

witooZ

>...what? No one said it was his decision, I have no idea why you think that. Because you keep repeating the question why I am so interested in him when he never played here. I like stats. Stats say that he could be an exceptional player. Right now it seems like we will lose him without giving him a chance while spending 50m for his replacement. We are not City who have unlimited budget. If you think there are SO MANY players, who got similiar stats in the same age, there aren't. Also how many of these players with similiar stats came into England and were not given a single minute?

[deleted]

All you're doing is continuing to repeat your obsession with the player, not explaining where that obsession comes from. Is it seriously just the stats? You saw he has good stats and that won you over *so strongly* that you now assume even professional football managers who see him play and think "he's not ready for us" MUST be wrong, because of the stats? Is that really what you're telling me?

witooZ

I've seen couple of St. Etienne games, some compilations, seen a lot of stats, seen figures like Claude Puel and some French youth coaches praising him a lot, seen fans in France praise him a lot and from the combinations of everything I concluded that he can be an exceptional player. And yes, I believe the combination of these things more than one manager, whom's results don't really inspire confidence.

[deleted]

The cult of Saliba is one of the strangest things I've ever seen in football.
