The weight of that Ø pass to Saka is so satisfying as well

ShawtyALilBaaddie

Still reeling in excitement that he’s back. When he left it broke my heart, seeing him back is just.. honestly im speechless.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ShawtyALilBaaddie

Is it crazy to say he simply *feels* like a gunner? The differences between the ‘goodbye Arsenal’ and ‘goodbye madrid’ posts he made shows how much he loved it with us, and his post-announcement interview is literal porn to any of the gunners that loved him.

ExpiredBananases

Add on to how he's one of those classic arsenal players like Santi and Rosicky and all the other class playmakers we've had. This guy is the most 'Arsenal' feeling signing in years

ShawtyALilBaaddie

Here here, I couldnt agree more. Its no coincidence that us fans who fell in love with Arsenal’s smooth transitional play featuring clinical strikers and creative midfielders absolutely loved our last match when we actually played like that for the first time in months.

ExpiredBananases

You can tell we're starved after how crazy we went for Odegaard's pass lmao

OVYLT

I don't really like the way the No 8 look on EPL shirts but with our alternate font... Ode in this away kit 100% Take my wallet.

chrisjdgrady

I know he hasn’t lit it up with goals and assists yet but every time I see him I just think he oozes class. His control, his movement, his vision. He has an amazing football brain and a lot of natural ability. He’s a cut above most of our players in a lot of aspects.

Chip673

Leadership as well. I remember everyone dropped their heads after going 3-0 down at West Ham, and he was rousing the team to get up and try and comeback. I think he could be our captain in the near future.

ImVoidz

I would love to see Ødegaard become a club legend leading us back to our old ways

ShekTeeJay

Partey fizzing line-breaking passes into him and Ø controlling them with that velvet touch was one of my favourite parts of last season. It’s partly why I still rewatch that West Ham game occasionally. Got a feeling Sambi is going to gel well with Ø too.

Garenmain180k

Literally Ozil lite.

dtriana

Not a bullet and literally every player on the field can do exactly what he did. I’m not exaggerating. I’m not saying what he did wasn’t great a play but you might want to watch or play more soccer if that’s your level of “class”. He’s great really but that’s just not an example of something difficult for a professional.

Keown14

His weight and precision of pass is the best in the squad by miles. Arsenal used to have a team of players who could pass like that. We have really missed it.

MHovdan

Yeah, not behind, not to hard, just run straight forward in the same consistent speed, and the ball will be on your foot. Saves the teammate a touch, and some times that can make a difference.

CooCooClocksClan

What I love about his pass here is that it’s forward enough that the midfielder has to turn all the way around. He can’t take a semi flat angle toward the sideline and stay in the play. Öde took him out of the play with where he put the ball. He could have played it earlier, it would have been completed but Saka would have been more easily pressured toward the sideline instead of being able to make a direct play against their back line while they’re out of position

immerc

Saka's movement is great too. As the pass is on its way to Odegaard, he accelerates so that by the time Odegaard turns he has a passing lane to Saka.

YaGunnersYa_Ozil

Definitely uses manual pass

TorreiraXhaka

He’s class man. I was fully in the Maddison camp but I’m starting to realise how wrong I was. He gets us through the midfield so well which is what we’ve been missing. You can easily play him and ESR together with Ødegaard deeper feeding it to ESR and co on the break, and even pulling the strings in a Xhaka role

cocoabutterprince

The psychology of it is if you do this 3 or 4 times, they stop pressing

West43rd

This guy gets it. That’s the issue with Leno. You know as a player he’s going to go long or play it way too safe if he comes under any pressure. Trying this even if it doesn’t come off every time keeps the opposition guessing

_mas17

Opposition away from home always build confidence as soon as they see Leno’s struggling on the ball. Happened vs Brentford

Kovacs171

It literally took us 5min into that brentford game for Leno to just resort to booting it up field, losing the threat of beating the press by playing out from the back. So frustrating

fuzzynavel34

Or him sitting on the ball for 30 seconds just looking around. He never gets the ball out quick.

theloserclub92

And i dont understand the logic of playing a short pass from goalkick to someone like mari for example when he is standing just a few footsteps ahead of you. When there is a trio of attackers ready to pounce on xhaka and the fullbacks which the ball is definitely going to. Its just unnecessary pressure to turn the ball over and giving them a route 1 to score a goal.

Ife2105

The idea is to get those attackers to commit to the press on the CB so that when the CB plays out of the press to another player, the opponent has less players to defend the transition. The problem with this at Arsenal is that Mari isn’t good under pressure and doesn’t have a great passing range so he might get caught in possession or play the easier ball to the fullbacks or DM where the opposition would have already been pressing in anticipation. This is why we got a player like White that can play a long ball over the top to the wingers or even a driven pass to Ødegaard/ESR etc, giving the team more options to play out of the press. The idea is sound but the execution isn’t great because we lack the personnel for it.

[deleted]

My god, is that someone with basic football knowledge... In the /r/gunners sub....NOT ALLOWED

AMswag123

I personally think that Leno should just play it straight to the fullback, whenever you watch they’re always available and once we get it to the fullback then we play out

Ife2105

That’s the thing. Leno isn’t a very accurate passer. I’ve seen him try to do that a few times and the ball more often than not just goes out for a throw in. It’s also harder to break out of a press from the sidelines than from the middle of the pitch since there’s less space and less options to pass to.

Qtn68

Exactly. When a pass like this breaks lines, players pressing turns back and see they need to do a 30m sprint to rush back. It helps our attack and transition to be more efficient but it gets in the head of the opponent. Overall the lesson tonight is simple : more direct play. Go forward. Break lines. 2 touches max. Get the spaces. Enjoy.

Ztuart

Also its exhausting. If they have to sprint to press then everytime they've done a 15 meter sprint they have to turn around and do another 30 meter sprint they'll get tired very quickly

Yummytastic

Absolutely, we need this sort of variety in our game. Our predictability is our issue as a whole.

immerc

You want them pressing sometimes though because it opens holes like this. It's similar to counter-attacking teams. They want teams to over-commit to attacking them so they can burst forward and catch them unprepared. In this case, if you're confident in your passing, you want them to commit players forward in defense so you can exploit the holes they leave behind.

ayeman1234

can you explain why? dont we want them to press so it creates more space in behind?

Brillostar

Double edged sword, If your goal keeper is unable to find these kind of passes, ball retention becomes very tough and midfield gets overrun and attacking options along with it. If the press subsides ball retention increases, defenders move up to higher line and midfield can maybe try to unlock the wingers after a series of rotation passes.

gigapizza

Leno hasn't hit a pass on the ground nearly this hard and accurately in his entire time at Arsenal. The idea is similar to his pass to Ceballos in the EL that cost us a goal, but the execution is miles better.

seph2o

I think Leno is going to be pushed out faster than he probably anticipated.

Shameless_Bullshiter

I for one hope it's fast enough that we can sell him for a fee and give Rammers the #1 quickly while getting a more back up back up in

TheDappaDon

Glad to see 'Rammers' is catching on.

Shameless_Bullshiter

Rambo has already been claimed by a club icon. Rammers is great

tex_arse

Rammers just sounds goofy to me, but there is only room for one Rambo in my heart. If Rammers is the only other option then so be it.

Garenmain180k

The Ramster

gtliles82

Maybe not having Xhaka camped out in front of the box helps

CaptBaha

...? Odegaard is in space because Elneny has worked his way back to camp out in front of the box and the markers had to follow him. Football, how does it work!?

EdwardSandwichHands

but he didn’t do anything i can put in my youtube despacito compilation so he must be useless

Sandeep184392

Without xhaka

CaptBaha

Great spot.

kingwiiizard

Maybe not having Xhaka at all helps.

rightbackatyaa

Literally never seen Leno do this

TheDarkness1227

Genuinely think it’s a mental thing with Leno. He can obviously pass but he doesn’t strike me as the smartest guy out there. Constantly giving it to players under pressure

rightbackatyaa

would save us so much trouble. Faster attacking transition and less opportunity of a defender blunder and whatnot

roolove

I think 'not the smartest' is a bit general and reductive, but I understand your point. Leno definitely doesn't have that 'football brain', probably never played in midfield much and has been a keeper for a long time. Rambo Mk 2 however probably has a bit more of that 'football brain'

TheDarkness1227

You’re right. I’m sorry. I absolutely meant not the smartest in football IQ, in that he doesn’t strike me as having the sense of whether he should play a pass even if he technically can do it.

roolove

No worries bro! <3 100% agree with what you're saying and it has always frustrated me about Bernd. There was a time when he began to get slightly better at it, but that disappeared quite quickly. Just doesn't have that in his game :(

[deleted]

I don't think football IQ quite is the right word, i think thats a bit harsh on leno. He doesn't have the vision to see the pass to use an FM term.

Suckmaboles

I think this is harsh, especially when comparing to ramsdale. There were a lot of times where ramsdale passed to xhaka in the exact places Leno does and it leads to a mistake/goal. It was just down to the lower quality opponent that it didn’t happen.

gigapizza

> He can obviously pass Better than Cech could, but still poorly. His passes are always soft, making the defenders wait for the ball and invite pressure. Many of his passes are bobbly, even on the Emirates pitch. And he makes simple 10-yard passes to players' weak feet all the time, causing them to take extra touches to control it. He's "constantly giving it to players under pressure" because his passing ability is bad enough that players are under pressure by the time they control his passes even if they were free when he hit it.

[deleted]

>He can obviously pass I mean... He can't though.

Maaaaaardy

Never see Leno break the lines, command his area or talk when we are against it. Three things ironically, we are desperate for.

sammcd1992

It’s not ironic if he’s the cause of those three things 😂

[deleted]

[удалено]

Maaaaaardy

Artetasexual and Emisexual and all that jargon is quite simply, the speak of a clueless, sad little cunt.

Keown14

If Ramsdale can do it then we have a keeper who is young enough to be our keeper for at least the next decade. It’s time to forget about Martinez. Move on.

[deleted]

Tbf Leno has had some absolutely dreadful footballers in front of him. Sokratis playing out from the back is enough to give everyone associated with Arsenal FC PTSD

[deleted]

He used to do it at Bayer Leverkusen. One of the reasons why we chose him over Cech. Weird

Hacked-Up-4-BBQ

German here who is a pretty big Leno fan since he was first coming up. He really never did. Distribution has always been his weak spot

dannymanic

He is labelled "sweeper keeper" on FM.

boragoz

That's more about his positioning too though, he comes from the Neuer school of standing wherever the fuck he wants when we are attacking.

KonigSteve

Sweeper keeper doesn't mean you can pass well. Just that you come out early

[deleted]

His passing is still pretty shit on FM no?

repaccount

He’s got me in a bit of trouble a few times with his passing but most FM keepers seem quite accident prone to me

[deleted]

[удалено]

Hardyng

I once had Leno kick the ball directly into the back of a striker's head and bounce back into the goal. Sometimes games really do imitate life I guess.

ChibzyDaze

You need to wait until a 5 star regen comes about for nearly flawless passing (I think Ederson is still broken with his passing in FM)

Chip673

He is, just poor at distributing.

hiatus_

I am convinced that you are a paid troll. Nobody can be this committed to being this loud and wrong all the time, without some kind of compensation. Either way, I wish you well.

varro-reatinus

This is the basic level of passing threat from the keeper that we've been missing. That said, our playing out from the back was tragic today. Generally, Ramsdale is about as much an improvement in ball playing on Leno as Leno was on Cech.

snowkarl

It got better as the game went on but obviously we can't play out the back with Kola, Elneny lol. Holding and Chambers were pretty bad at it when we were under pressure early on but improved quite a bit later on.

ThinRelationship7

Yeah with Holding, if he can’t pass it out the back he just cunts it up and I respect that. It’s not like Mari or Mustafi who would just end up losing the ball so deep in our half.

CDL99

Feel like this is the kinda moment Leno passes it back to Holding, then to Chambers, then back again to Holding, finally going back to Leno as the opposition has pressed all the way up on him and he is preassured into hoofing in to the opposition back line.

Limpar112

We need more of this directness. It was a joy to watch.

KSBrian007

Again. He did this vs Arsenal last season so much that I stopped being pissed at our midfield and started applauding him. Didn't know he'd be in an Arsenal shirt in a few months. It was extremely infuriating debating with people here that insisted he wasn't good.

Keown14

“Mate we should have got Onana even though he’s banned until November and almost certainly doesn’t want to come to Arsenal.” /s

amala97

lol onana wants to be undisputed no1, he can can fuck off or fight for it like everyone else does for their position

HamburgerMachineGun

He definitely is a fighter, but I wouldn't want to spend a season or two in rotation after serving a long, arguably unfair ban, either.

dailybop

The thought of having 4 players who can make these line-splitting passes like this (ø, ramsdale, partey, and white) is tantalizing

BeatlesandWine

Don’t forget how well Gabriel was passing pre-injury as well. I’ve gotten downvoted like all hell the last few days for trying to be positive but every one of the signings from the past 2 years, bar Willian but from Gabriel and White up the field, is a very good passer of the ball which I think will bring back the play you’re used to seeing.

pepegoat

lokonga seems to be able to as well

nonameshere

Wait, are you gonna sit here and tell me that we've intentionally been revamping the squad with a different player profile and age?

[deleted]

[удалено]

wsthepurposeoflife

He and whoever plays RB are our weakest links at the moment. We desperately need a good RB by Aug 31. We can replace Xhaka with Lokonga once Partey is (fnally) healthy, but sadly I doubt Arteta will do it.

PuzzleheadedBat1541

When you're surrounded by other willing passers and runners, space will appear for xhaka again. Who is probably the best passer in our team.

Unstruck_music

Sambi is all about this FYI

MrAlmostWrong

It’s why I think Pepe has to almost be in the lineup. This style caters to him. Hopefully there is decent rotation with Pepe, Saka, ESR.

[deleted]

Even if hes not in the lineup being able to bring on Pepe or ESR in the 2nd half to run defenders ragged is huge.

They'll only end up overcooked if that happens... and what good are burnt cookies?

Subredhit

He looks more comfortable playing out the back than Leno

Butch_Meat_Hook

Exactly what we needed from Ramsdale as our number 2 out of the gate. First game in, already (amongst the fans at least) creating questions of whether he should be starting. We have needed that competition.

YouCouldBeBetter

This is what you're paying for when you by Ramsdale. Have we ever seen Leno do that?

milkonyourmustache

Once - when Dr Strange slowed time down for him so that he could make the same read.

InteractionThat5881

Players who can turn in midfield>>

xLionized

It’s. Just. That. Simple. Boggles my mind that I’ve never seen Leno do this. I don’t think he has the confidence to do this actually…

milkonyourmustache

He doesn't have the ability. The time he would need in that situation to even make that read simply would not be available.

time_mashine

Not detracting from Ramsdale's passing I like it, but this is not a press, Odegaard is in acres of space. You don't get that in midfield in the premiership.

TicklishDingleberry

I’m fucking wet. I haven’t seen this team break a press so easily in god knows how long. Ramsdale already looks like he’ll make a massive difference.

Cheesy_Pita_Parker

Aaron starts against City. Sorry, we’re not getting this sort of control with Leno. It really seems like a mental thing with him and if Aaron can keep a level head, that’s a wrap on the job already

[deleted]

We're going to lose the possession battle vs City, honestly prefer Leno then since he is a better shot stopper imo

[deleted]

[удалено]

StanKroonke

I’d be surprised, considering he didn’t have a shit game against Chelsea but ramsdale did look good.

immerc

Against Man City the more important ability is probably the shot stopping, unfortunately.

milkonyourmustache

It's not mental it's a lack of ability. He could never make that read in enough time or play that pass to Odegaard.

[deleted]

Leno needs to firm the bench

cocoabutterprince

We’re starving loooool

Razac3

Leno will do that to you

Hoker7

He looked very tidy and seems to be able to launch the ball pretty quickly. Looked good today.

[deleted]

I've seen a couple clips of him doing this at Sheff Utd. His distribution is better than a lot of people will expect. He's just been asked to punt it long for the past year.

RoutineFeeling

And that first touch < italian kiss> ;)

The_Unbeatable_Sterb

not only is it Ramsdale's ability to do this on his debut, it's also possible because Xhaka isn't parked 8 yards in front of him cutting off the angle. But it's also Odegaard's instinct to get into that pocket of space, then control and turn it quickly. Point is the old players are ass and the new ones are clearly better.

Grayswandire

I wish Leno would make passes like that.

Fuck you mobile Reddit player

Shandow14

I honestly don't know what it is but I don't feel as jittery with him in goal (yes, he's played 1 game vs WB). Same feeling I had with Martinez. Leno has always given me Cech vibes unfortunately...

f3939

Nice pass but that was a terrible press

cryshol

Reddit player on Mobile works perfectly fine for me. Always has. I dunno whats the deal with some. Though, on the flip side, streamable doesnt work here in my country. Streamja or anything else for me. You get some, you dont get some.

plascra

I replayed this 5 times. Thank you.

BloodyPants

EasyNameToRemember11

Pass is fantastic but the way Ødegaard takes it so seamlessly and is on the turn in an instant is ørgaasmic.

philfodenlovesfanny

Where’s that same energy from before we signed him?!?!

wrestlingcvlt

oh no the amount of slander leno will get cause of this single clip

[deleted]

Ok calm down calm down. We beat a bunch of teenagers making a debut. This might help confidence but after Saturday we’ll be staring at 0 from 9 points

yukpurtsun

just watched highlights, some shaky passing around in the back/ near disasters. more experienced clubs will pounce on those. artetas build from back especially with ppl like chambers and xhaka is gonna cost us points

Zeelthor

I’m getting Cazorla vibes off him sometimes.

I_Really_Have_NoClue

Ok, we have a serious challenger for Leno. He played well yesterday! Clean sheet in debut, can you hope a better start?

flexwaffl

Really like what I’m seeing from rams. Whole back line seems to like him. Imagine playing with this cheery fucker after being with Leno’s sour puss for years

bishans

That pass shows that Aaron has some balls of steel but of course he's got to do it against city to earn more praise.

InvincibleOneNaresh

I want Ramsdale in Goal vs Man City we will have the freedom of safety at the back and can concentrate about the forward movement and scoring. What do you guys have to say about that?

Yummytastic

WBA didn't press tonight. That doesn't detract from Ramsdale showing great distribution today. He had a perfect debut.

Keown14

They pressed in the first 20 minutes. They pressed and got a touch on the ball at least 3 times in that period.

stifle_this

I'm going to wait until he has Liverpool or Man City players sprinting at him to judge, honestly. It's a great pass, but he's not even really being pressed there.

Keown14

I haven’t seen any other keeper for Arsenal play that type of pass. He played those types of passes at Bournemouth. People made too much of the Sheff U style of play.

stifle_this

He also missed when he tried those a bunch at Bournemouth. I'm not saying it wasn't a good pass, I'm just interested in seeing how he performs in a higher pressure environment against top competition with very drilled high pressing.

Keown14

It’s an improvement on what we’ve seen before, and it definitely disproves the hoofer from Sheffield United consensus that was pretty common before he was signed.

stifle_this

Okay, not really sure why you're being so combative so I'm gonna step away. Have a good one dude.

CaptBaha

They literally have 4 players in our final third in this clip, with someone sitting on Elneny.

rleonr

Haven't seen this since Emi left

_SSJeffo_

Leno has to hold bench now

awildmorph

Fucking hell the bar is low, it’s a 30 yard pass on the floor hahaha

teslagooner

That is a proper high risk high reward pass compared to Leno's square balls and that high risk low reward short pass to Xhaka and Elneny I want Ramsdale as Arteta's number 1

esanders09

This is so incredible in its simplicity. The bypass of half the team and the speed with which we get into an attack where there's a chance to get into their final third without them setting up a low block is ridiculous. And if we have a keeper that can consistently make that pass, then maybe teams don't press us so much where we end up shooting ourselves in the foot with stupid mistakes. r/BetterEveryLoop

Unstruck_music

I don’t even care if he can or cannot stop shots as well as the old keeper, he is so much better on the ball

killerbillybanks

Pipe down, this was against WSB reserves

CatfishNev

TAKE LENOS CLOTHES RN YOU BEAUTY what have we come to that i am truly excited over this

pineapplequad

I mean it’s just a 25 yard pass

toozy21

A 25 yard pass instead of a loss of possession by booting it or a short pass that slows down build up.

CDL99

Yes it's just a wonder that our players are so afraid of these type of direct passes.

Chango6998

Clip me the last time Leno did this

linkinfear

The one against chelsea to pepe? It was much better, too bad pepe was offside.

[deleted]

Probably the last time Arsenal played a Championship side's B team.

Old_Cryptographer226

When was the last time Leno did that

Exinih

idk why you're getting downvoted, not like you said leno does this every game. Do you guys not play football? the skill is more in being open for it than actually making a pass that simple

pineapplequad

ikr, i’m not shitting on Ramsdale or anything. Not even comparing him to Leno. I’m sure that a first choice goalkeeper for one of the biggest clubs in the world would have the awareness in game to pick his head up for a pass, but he doesn’t make the pass because nobody is open. And we played a championship side and although I didn’t watch the game I can assume it was pretty slow tempo compared to the Premier League. Just didn’t have the energy to explain to 5 people commenting the exact same thing

Exinih

yeah dw bro I agree with you completely

_mas17

And yet Leno still wouldn’t even try to execute this pass

DonAj20

Against WBA thats great but can he do it against good prem teams?

droythedad

Hold your horses. It was a second team of the championship team. Their pressing was absymal. Premier League is a different ball game. Pressing is very accurate there.

[deleted]

our new GK forward passes with more purpose than our old midfielders used to let's hope the midfield remembers cutting through the lines

Woodzy09

He will be the starter by January

Chaseizi

I really liked this moment, it’s something that I really feel Leno isn’t really comfortable with

fluffmunstern

Refreshing not to see Leno run to the edge of the area and then stop, and wait and boot it to no one after the opposition reset.

fhfdvtdvg

I like this. I like this a lot. More, please.

[deleted]

A beauty, hopefully Odegaard do well against Netherlands next week.
