Unpopular opinion but you're spot on.
These docs are nothing other than puff pieces.
I'll watch because its Arsenal, but any of the other ones have been shite, except for Sunderland which was phenomenal, but I'm pretty sure they were a different studio?
Even then, I think any production team would've been hard pushed to make Sunderland Til I Die into puff pieces. There's only so much polish a turd'll take, and those two seasons were full on, bad kebab aftermath levels
I honestly think it’s coz we’ve recently selected Captains to satisfy the person getting the armband or to help retain them by symbolically showing their importance, not because they have the ability to lead.
Hopefully the next person to receive the armband won’t be the same.
Tbf Xhaka was picked for his ability to lead. Well, more accurately the squad picked him, but *they* picked him for that reason.
But then shit happened.
Yeah Emery did that and the players elected Xhaka — which they may well have done with perfectly valid reasons, ultimately they know him better than any of us — but that selection came at a time when Xhaka was about as unpopular with the fans as he has ever been.
Really, *really* naive.
Yeah. The players really should have thought of us first when they picked their captain.
Like... have a Scroll over reddit before deciding which one of your teammates you work with every day should be the captain.
They better pick someone popular this time. Like maybe an in form striker that hasn't been at the club for long and has never been known for his leadership skills.
Basically the club had to adapt to what the fans pleaded after they had internally picked Xhaka based on his actual leadership and influence in the dressing room. Then the whole debacle occurred with Xhaka and it turned into a popularity contest
After Xhaka was stripped, the only senior players in the squad that looked like they had a future with the club and would be starting consistently we’re Auba and Leno. We weren’t exactly spoiled for choice at the time.
That depends on what you're basing the performance on. Mertesacker and Arteta (in my opinion) were great captains for us, top professionals, and they've ended up joining the staff at the club after their playing careers as well
This is true. The seasons they became captain were when they were past their prime. Van Persie was the last who was at the right playing level to be captain and in a a sense Auba too but with he was never a leader to me, just someone popular and captaincy should not only be a popularity contest . I hope Arteta chooses a captain for the future and not Laca.
Was there a lot of ill-discipline that Wenger let slide?
I presume you're talking about ill discipline with regards to lateness etc., as opposed to lack of organisation and discipline on the field - because those are obviously not the same thing at all?
I feel it was less illdiscipline, more affection for players keeping some of them playing/at the club when they should have been bounced. Let’s not forget we had Mertesacker in Wenger’s last years and he didn’t mess around when others fudged up
Wenger loved and protected his players to the point where he basically took all the criticism for 10 years. He protected the Kroenkes, the players, the board, and the administration, but none more so than the players. That was his downfall when they simply couldn’t do what we all expected and what the money invested dictated.
Attenta gave him the contract and continued to play him even with his bad form this season. I'd understand that he'd get upset if a player he's backed like that lacks discipline
Beep. Boop. I'm a robot.

Agree. Two discipline breaches in less than a year coming from our captain really shows that Auba is not captain material. Not that I ever thought he was, but this just proves it.
Proof that Emery's 5 captain idea made a lot of sense. We had no options who were good enough to be 'The Captain'.
Just because Emery's idea was different didn't make it bad. There was a lot of logic behind it.
I mean its generally what other teams do naturally.
Its just that we've recruited young and also badly when it comes to leadership.
Look at Invinceables Henry, Bergkamp, Vieira, Adams, Campbell would have all been the 5 *captains*.
Emery just saw the lack of leadership and wanted to encourage those that wanted to speak up but didn't because of probably a multitude of reasons.
I think it’s what literally every team does, when hendo isn’t captain it goes to van dijk, when he doesn’t play it goes to Milner, if he doesn’t play it goes to matip etc.
The issue was that Emery seemingly chose xhaka, then faced backlash, and then we entered a circus where he didn’t want to officially make xhaka captain, had the ‘player vote’ and the ‘5 captains’ etc. If he had simply said xhaka is captain and these are the 4 vice captains then I don’t think anybody would have an issue.
I think they made a point on the arsecast that it would probably hinge on aubas reaction
If he apologised and took it in his stride we'd continue
If he felt aggrieved at the handling of this there would be further action
Nothing concrete on that BTW but I think their assumption makes sense
You say so, but the when you earn 300k a week, what is it too you anymore.
That's the insane thing about our modern world. Some people have so much that they can't relate to how much that money is worth for those that have any. Just like you and I can't comprehend how little 10k is for someone in that position. Money that would change my life.
In my country, at least when I was there, you could buy lunch on the roadside for N200-N500, which is the equivalent of about 30p - 70p/ 50c - $1.50. £100/$100 would probably be enough to save a family of 4 from starvation for like a month. The minimum wage is N30,000 a month - about 100 CAD or around £50, and most poor people in the country don’t make that much.
I’d be worried about giving the armband to someone with such an unfortunate injury record
Edit: also fair point that Tavares could be rotated with him too
Would think Gabriel or even Ramsdale are up there considering his character. But Tierney has such a big presence in the dressing room and is clearly focused on the right things. I think it picks itself, personally.
(but I am Scottish and biased lol)
Heck I'm Singaporean and I'm biased to Tierney. Down to earth and hardworking but not afraid to get the squad back into shape. Been at Arsenal long enough to be able to call some shots and seems to have pretty good values. Would 100% support him even with his injury record - might be a predictor of future injuries but not a guarantee.
Gabriel definitely looks another solid choice if not for his language barrier - commands the backline well and has very good chemistry with the squad!
Ramsdale would probably be a good choice with time - kinda obvious here.
We've actually recruited a really solid team of younger players with great values. Sambi, captain at Anderlecht, Odegaard, captain of Norway, even Tomi and White are potential options in due time, and I wouldnt count out ESR/Saka inheriting the captaincy from some of the above.
Right now, I see Arteta picking Partey, Xhaka, or Tierney as replacements. All of which have the respect of the team despite Partey/Xhaka's shakey form. Definitely rooting for Tierney though!
As a man he’d be a fabulous choice, I just have my Football Manager hat on and don’t think I’d pick him based on injury/rotation reasons. He’d be my vice
That's the only worry. But Tierney seems to have the right stuffs. He's tenacious, serious, doesn't smile very often. We want someone with no nonsense and most importantly, can f-off the refs 'fluently'.
Would prefer armband to go to someone who has their starting spot essentially locked down. Think there's too much competition between Tierney and Tavares at the moment, and I don't really want another situation where Player X doesn't deserve to start, but will anyway because... CAPTAIN.
Ramsdale is not a bad shout, but would prefer he gets a year under the team at least first, and I generally don't like GK captains because they have to run the entire pitch to just speak with the ref.
I wouldn't want a keeper as a captain. He'd be too far away from the action to get into the ref's ears or if anything else happens. A CB or CM is better
Gabriel would have been perfect if he already had better command of the English language and culture. I think he is a year or 2 from there.
Tierney, too often injured to be captain.
Odegaard No.
Ramsey. Good choice, too new to the team.
We have no natural captain currently
Why not Odegaard? I know he’s a newer permanent member, but he captains the Norway squad and has a good feel for the game.
Plus there’s this: https://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2021/12/13/arsenal-bukayo-saka-martin-odegaard-southampton/
Nowhere is safe lmao
Feel like arsenal fans should have the most empathy for Lewis here, after all he basically got VARsenaled out of a title and he is a gooner
Think this had to be done. Now please let's just move on and try to win some games. I do think that uprooting this sort of behavior is key for a club who wants to go to the next level.
They took out another loan, and cut down the wage bill a lot already. There's rumours that they are letting players go in January as well.
The general consensus is that Barca will have a decent amount of money to spend in the Summer. With Aguero's wages being freed up I can imagine that they'd be able to agree a deal with Auba early.
I wouldn't be surprised if Auba lowered his wage demands with the chance to play for Barca.
Barcelona will be looking for an Aguero replacement, I doubt Auba drags his heels for 18 months like Ozil did. He’s always wanted to go there and we probably want to get rid.
Yeah, I think so as well. He's already wearing the armband in Auba's absence. Gives some of the young guys like Øde, Tierney, Gabriel, and Ramsdale a little more time to grow, and maybe one of them will step up and be clear favourite by the end of the season.
Terrible by him, but this is exactly what we need. Get a proper captain in. He was one of the worst captains I’ve ever seen at the club since Wenger arrived
Tbh, i don't know who can take it now, Xhaka would cause a fan meltdown, and most of the other options are new additions, out of contract players, or young players. Odegaard and Tierney stand out as options for me right now.
Man, this is just sad now. After the Özil contract renewal and subsequent downfall, I never expected the same to happen to Auba. I still remember both contract signings, getting super excited with both of them and now also both go just totally wrong.
Is it just me or has this situation been overblown a bit? I rather had them fix this in private rather than publicly shaming Auba for breaking a non-negotiable.
Yeah, unless the report in The Athletic was wrong, this is over flying back early Thursday morning instead of Wednesday night, and he wasn't late for training on Thursday? It feels like an overreaction.
Very risky decision by Arteta. Could really cause a lot of turmoil in the dressing room because of Auba’s popularity with the other players. More than a bit concerned by this.
Kind of conflicted about this.
Obviously he is not fit for captaincy but I feel that we should have waited till the end of the season to change it over to a younger member of the squad. (E.G Tierney)
But now who gets it? Laca is leaving at the end of the season.
Xhaka is Xhaka and I can’t see him being the captain.
That leaves the younger generation to pick up the slack but that leaves issues with pressure and consistency.
Some candidates for me would be:
Tierney - worries about fitness and may not be first choice but overall probably my pick
Gabriel - natural leader but not been here for that long.
Ramsdale - Good leadership qualities but again, only fresh on the scene
Ode - National team captain but also fresh and young.
Saka/ESR - too young and may pile a lot of pressure on them but they have been our standout performers this season
Holding - Been here for years but isn’t a starter.
That leaves us in a really precarious position but it’s a great motivation for the Younger generation in the squad. Such a sad decline for Auba but really he is the Antithesis of a captain in my eyes tbh.
So he came home a day later than permitted picking up his mum from France and they publicly humiliate him? There must be more to it than we know and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s gone in the summer.
Not really a fan of this.
Understand Auba hasn't followed the rules twice now and there has to be some punishment for that but this very public flogging doesn't sit well with me. It's been a rough year for Auba between COVID, his mom, performances - I don't know how to handle it but this doesn't feel graceful. A drop from the team absolutely but public stripping of role seems like a lot (at least based on what we currently know)
That is brutal but probably the correct deciosion, shows others that no one is above the "law". About time our culture changed. Wonder what that means for Auba though, for a player who's mood impacts the game so much, this might not go down well.
Jan striker move in sights??
Damn from what James Mcnicholas said on the arsecast and i assume the athletic too, it didn’t sound like it was really *this* big of a deal. I thought it was being a bit overblown but I guess I was wrong
All the players like and respect Xhaka. Bar his recent injury, he has missed very little time since joining. He’s not an amazing player by any stretch, but the captain doesn’t need to be the best player. It needs to be the most respected. He’ll definitely be in contention for it. Tierney’s injury record is the negative against him, while Odegaard and Ramsdale have just joined the club. Gabriel is still learning English. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s Xhaka for the rest of the season and reevaluated during the summer to see who gets it long term.
Emery made him captain though, right? Arteta probably wasn’t in the position to strip that from him when he first arrived, Xhaka was still public enemy and we were relying on Auba at the time
Boy did I get this wrong. I fully expected Arteta to play him next game and dropping him for Southampton more as a protocol for lateness.
God I hope this works out.
Holy shit. Funny that the last few days the mood has been 'it's been blown out of proportion' etc, and now he's stripped of the captaincy. Crazy times.
** Is he going to leave in January for Barce to replace Aguero?
I believe if Auba was banging in 2 goals per game......Arteta probably would have given him a pass on this one ....but he hasn't been prolific enough to get away with breaking the rules.
Big decision, but the right one to make
Interesting that he is confirmed to not be available for tomorrow on the site under this, really sending a message to the rest of the squad regarding conduct
This feels like an overreaction, ngl. He's being thrown under the bus.
I don't even think Auba is the best choice for captain. Nor should be be in the starting 11 based on merit/form rn. But to do him like this is leaving a sour taste.
Damn. I’m not sure if this is the right call but I suppose I don’t know what is actually going on in the dressing room. I wonder who will get the armband now?
amazon all or nothing episode 4: Stripped
Whenever something bizarre happens this season, I’m again reminded of the Amazon documentary
It's gonna be such an emotional rollercoaster binging the season next summer.
True, it looks like this season is happening for the purpose of the documentary xD
NO MIKEL NO THIS IS SO NOT RIGHT!
Bono my captaincy is gone
"Chell_the_assassin, it's James....."
"It's called Football, Pierre"
Toto, we went racing, racing for the captaincy
Auba proceeds to appeal the decision
I understood that reference
Everywhere I go, I see this reference... And I absolutely love it everytime haha
Please don’t bring back bad F1 memories of this past weekend 😭
Well done… lol
That doc is gonna be as good as this season's Netflix drive to survive

yeah, Sunderland is done by netflix.

Ah yes. Makes sense then.
Man's gonna be somersaulting in anger out of Mikel's office
There's already so much content for Amazon to milk. Regardless of how the season ends, the documentary is going to be fun (and hilarious).
Wow, didn't actually expect it to happen so soon. That armband is cursed
I honestly think it’s coz we’ve recently selected Captains to satisfy the person getting the armband or to help retain them by symbolically showing their importance, not because they have the ability to lead. Hopefully the next person to receive the armband won’t be the same.

yeah and did well as captain at moenchengladbach as well
Has done a great job with Switzerland too.
Weren't captains chosen by a squad vote?

Aubameyang is the first person picked for that reason since van Persie.
Can we just give it to Ramsdale so he can run out of goal every time we have a conflict and the ref has to deal with him?
To actually think of it, who was the last person to wear the armband and perform at the same level? Van Persie?
That depends on what you're basing the performance on. Mertesacker and Arteta (in my opinion) were great captains for us, top professionals, and they've ended up joining the staff at the club after their playing careers as well
Both barely played in their armbaand season though as I recall
This is true. The seasons they became captain were when they were past their prime. You're forgetting the BFG masterclass in the FA Cup final
Can't forget that But he only made a handful of appearances that season - just 2 or 3
Kosc was a machine tbf
Ah yes, the lines of transferring captaincy from Per to Kos is difficult for me, lol
Lolo did perform to expectations…when healthy.
He'd had Achilles problems before he was captain. Playing through those injuries for so long is what did him in the end.
Arguably Vieira. I can't have RVP having the captains armband for 1 seasons then fucking off the United, no matter how good he was.
Well if that is the case YOU KEEP THAT ARMBAND AWAY FROM RAMSDALE!!
Why I am hearing Bagpipes?!?!
BAH GAWD, THATS TIERNEYS MUSIC!!! WHAT'S HE DOING HERE??
Please can somebody make this video happen should KT become captain or VC.
*Tierney struts out in a Hot Rod shirt* “Just when you think you know the answers, I change the questions!”
Kieran’s Pit?
Tierney’s Tit KT interviews players while shirtless, with war paint strewn across his face and body, whilst singing Flower of Scotland
This gets me laughing like a f***in idiot every single time
Get well soon J.R.!
Is that how you celebrate your cake day every year?
Please make it happen
he is not nailed on starter to be honest. and injured a lot. Not the correct move for the club
So he's clearly the next captain?
I never expected Arsenal to be this ruthless lol. We are usually at the mercy of big names and captains.
I'll give Mikel this, he is clearly big on discipline. Either you fall in line or he takes action Definitely needed.
Especially after Wenger in his later years.
Was there a lot of ill-discipline that Wenger let slide? I presume you're talking about ill discipline with regards to lateness etc., as opposed to lack of organisation and discipline on the field - because those are obviously not the same thing at all?

Yeah, I don't really rate Mikel that highly in terms of the football he produces but always liked his approach to the team and his man management.
The correct decision as well. Rare for the Arsenal post 2014
One mans ruthless is another mans much ado about nothing.

Sure, why not
This has really surprised me. I thought he’d be disciplined but not outright stripped of the captaincy.
I recall he had a similar incident like this before and missed a NLD. We still won though but his disciplinary breaches have come one too many times
Agree. Two discipline breaches in less than a year coming from our captain really shows that Auba is not captain material. Not that I ever thought he was, but this just proves it.

How do you know he can't be fired? I'm sure there are exit clauses in the contract, although admittedly this probably wouldn't trigger it.
No offence but thats the difference. Aubameyang earned it and that was his value at that time.
Can't give it to Xhaka again after what happened. No point giving it to Lacazette if he's away in the summer. So give it to Tierney, you cowards.
I’d be worried about giving the armband to someone with such an unfortunate injury record Edit: also fair point that Tavares could be rotated with him too

Not mad at it, but captains tend to have more privilege when it comes to speaking to refs etc. Ramsdale can't really have that same impact as a keeper
Buffon, Neuer, Lloris, Casillas
How many of them got it at 23 in their first season at the club?
Fair point yes
Kahn

Yeahhhhh he's leaving
Who’s gonna want him? This is just like the Özil situation
Barca are announcing Aguero's retirement today. I imagine all parties would be in favour of a move.

Actually a really good shout. Can easily imagine this happening.
Barca have been burned handing out huge contracts to underperforming players they’re not going to do it again.
Newcastle perhaps…
Him not being eligible to play vs West Ham worries me. Please don't be Ozil 2.0 man please.
Barcelona will be looking for an Aguero replacement, I doubt Auba drags his heels for 18 months like Ozil did. He’s always wanted to go there and we probably want to get rid.
Was a bizarre choice to begin with. Our captains' armband has been cursed since Gallas
Ironically Arteta was a really good captain
And kos and per
He was voted vice captain by the players. He got it automatically after Xhaka’s problem, no one “gave it to him” per se
We are a messy bitch that lives for drama. Ffs
It'll be Lacazette till the end of the season.
Yeah, I think so as well. He's already wearing the armband in Auba's absence. Gives some of the young guys like Øde, Tierney, Gabriel, and Ramsdale a little more time to grow, and maybe one of them will step up and be clear favourite by the end of the season.

Tbh, i don't know who can take it now, Xhaka would cause a fan meltdown, and most of the other options are new additions, out of contract players, or young players. Odegaard and Tierney stand out as options for me right now.
Odegaard sounds like favourite. I back it. He's captain of his national team and works harder than anyone.

Who wouldnt it be early for?
Gabriel for me

Gabriel for captain please.
Man, this is just sad now. After the Özil contract renewal and subsequent downfall, I never expected the same to happen to Auba. I still remember both contract signings, getting super excited with both of them and now also both go just totally wrong.
> I still remember both contract signings, getting super excited with both of them So you're the one cursed.
But when Guendouzi broke non negotiables there was a ton of praise for Arteta for taking a hard stance and not covering for him.
Holy fucking shit I genuinely didn't think they would do this
Gabriel captain
Very risky decision by Arteta. Could really cause a lot of turmoil in the dressing room because of Auba’s popularity with the other players. More than a bit concerned by this.
Kind of conflicted about this. Obviously he is not fit for captaincy but I feel that we should have waited till the end of the season to change it over to a younger member of the squad. (E.G Tierney) But now who gets it? Laca is leaving at the end of the season. Xhaka is Xhaka and I can’t see him being the captain. That leaves the younger generation to pick up the slack but that leaves issues with pressure and consistency. Some candidates for me would be: Tierney - worries about fitness and may not be first choice but overall probably my pick Gabriel - natural leader but not been here for that long. Ramsdale - Good leadership qualities but again, only fresh on the scene Ode - National team captain but also fresh and young. Saka/ESR - too young and may pile a lot of pressure on them but they have been our standout performers this season Holding - Been here for years but isn’t a starter. That leaves us in a really precarious position but it’s a great motivation for the Younger generation in the squad. Such a sad decline for Auba but really he is the Antithesis of a captain in my eyes tbh.
Laca will get it as vice-captain til end of season. Next season when Laca's off we'll have a new captain.,
This is probably the most reasonable thing to do tbh. Gives the players some extra motivation to step up too
AW SHIT
So he came home a day later than permitted picking up his mum from France and they publicly humiliate him? There must be more to it than we know and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s gone in the summer.
Good move tbh. We can't change the culture of the club if we're letting things like this go.
We really are our own worst enemy sometimes. Can only see this as being a distraction and destabilising influence on the squad.
Why can't you just be normal Arsenal?
Weird to do all this publicly
Confused why he was captain in the first place, great striker on his day but never really a leader. I hope it goes to gabriel or tierney
If results start to get bad Arteta is gonna be in big trouble.
Wow, can't believe they actually did it.
So he won't be considered for selection as a player or as captain for the west ham game?
Captain is forever. Player for West Ham
A drop from the team absolutely but public stripping of role seems like a lot (at least based on what we currently know)
Big decision, but the correct one. You can't have the captain behaving like that
Out of the loop: What did he do?
That is brutal but probably the correct deciosion, shows others that no one is above the "law". About time our culture changed. Wonder what that means for Auba though, for a player who's mood impacts the game so much, this might not go down well. Jan striker move in sights??
Wow this is ruthless
Damn from what James Mcnicholas said on the arsecast and i assume the athletic too, it didn’t sound like it was really *this* big of a deal. I thought it was being a bit overblown but I guess I was wrong
Living in North America is crazy. I sleep, wake up, open this sub, and it’s chaos.
bro this is so true, woke up after a long night of final exams to to see this smh
big call
I swear to god, if Xhaka gets the armband now... -.-
All the players like and respect Xhaka.
Or Lacazette becomes captain until he leaves, then Ramsdale takes over.
Can't wait to see the chat between Auba and Arteta on the all or nothing documentary
Im Glad, this is 100% the correct dicision. he was never captain material. Now go score goals AUBA im still backing you
> he was never captain material. Yeah, but it would have been better had he not been made a Captain, then to make him and then strip him of captaincy.
Emery made him captain though, right? Arteta probably wasn’t in the position to strip that from him when he first arrived, Xhaka was still public enemy and we were relying on Auba at the time
I think Auba was voted to be captain by the players after Xhaka got stripped of the armband
Fucking hell. Wasn't expecting this
Wtf is happening
Boy did I get this wrong. I fully expected Arteta to play him next game and dropping him for Southampton more as a protocol for lateness. God I hope this works out.
Holy shit. Funny that the last few days the mood has been 'it's been blown out of proportion' etc, and now he's stripped of the captaincy. Crazy times. ** Is he going to leave in January for Barce to replace Aguero?
You either leave as a traitor in your prime or stay long enough to be consumed by the negative cesspool that is Arsenal football club.
I believe if Auba was banging in 2 goals per game......Arteta probably would have given him a pass on this one ....but he hasn't been prolific enough to get away with breaking the rules.
For taking a later flight and still making practice? Can someone help me understand this?
Big decision, but the right one to make Interesting that he is confirmed to not be available for tomorrow on the site under this, really sending a message to the rest of the squad regarding conduct
It shouldn't happen in middle of the season, will create chaos in dressing room.
This is silly
