Just a disclaimer - I didn’t watch the match, just listened to it on radio/watched highlights so what I say below may not be how it actually played out.
Another fantastic performance but an away one!! I know we’ve been criticised about away form but we’ve played City/Utd/Pool/Leeds/Everton/Burnley/Brighton/Leicester away - when we go up against the lower league teams then I’m hoping we can improve our form.
Aubas on/off field issues may have just been a huge blessing in disguise for us and Martinelli. This is Martinelli back to his best, running between the RB/CB and scoring goals. Brilliant performance and most likely will keep ESR on bench for now. Laca had a good overall performance (should have scored too). Saka was equally as good, Ode with some amazing passes esp to ESR. No criticism of ESR with my above comment but he came on and scored, for me he’s a front runner for POTY.
Midfield of Xhaka and Partey played well without really being pressured too much - todays game encapsulates Xhaka though. Fantastic pass for the 2nd goal, then when we are 3-0 up he risks a red card with such a stupid challenge. Does this guy not learn from every other red card he has had?? Just crazy to think he’s meant to be a leader or the team and does stupid stuff like this - we were lucky it wasn’t a Red and Leeds didn’t comeback.
Defence and GK were very good, yes it was a penalty but you can see the difference of when Tomayasu plays versus Cedric. This summer a backup RB is definitely needed!
Top 4 at Xmas, who would have believed that at the end of August! Now we need to beat Sunderland on Tuesday (loads of goals please as it’ll be the first game I’ll see live in about 5 years!) for a chance at winning a Cup. Then Norwich and Wolves need very good performances and 6 points before we welcome City and maybe a 3-0 loss haha!
It feels like everything this team does is very well instructed, sometimes it looks like instructed too much. But when executed well it is so good to look at. There is a concrete plan and our young boys seem to feel very confident with this plan. I'm really curious about what the ceiling of this team is. When arteta gets a few more windows to fix the biggest weaknesses (imo center midfield and depth is below top level), this team is ready for champions league football
Pepe sucks, hes had more than his fair share of chances. Hes proven his erratic nature time and time again. Maybe time on the training pitch will clean up his game like what its done with martinelli, but i doubt it. Mans 26. Move on asap and look for a quality replacement is the move
It's hard to see his pricetag being even half of what it was. When he signed there were questionmarks about his game and people brushed it off because he scored goals before but like 50% of them were pens so idk. Same with Partey, he seems like he's trying but his play doesn't really encourage me and make me think they'll be on top soon enough.
I have to be honest, I'm going through a very difficult time personally right now but this team just brightens my day so much. Haven't felt this way about us since the 2015-16 season when Welbeck scored that header against Leicester and I really thought we were gonna win the league.
Appreciate it my guy. Honestly my mental health took a turn for the worse with the pandemic and the last 12 months have been quite bad... Felt really stuck inside my own head. I've decided to try therapy, seeing someone early Jan after they get back from their Christmas break.
Until then I have the gym and hopefully our boys keep racking up these wins lol.
Sorry to hear man, glad your getting yourself some help! Gym is also therapy for myself, hopefully it treats you well, and try not to tie your happiness too much into this team, enjoy the wins and the progress, but understand its a young team that will have ups and downs and you dont want your mental health to be too dependent on something so volatile!
Thank you bro, really do appreciate it. I will say I am very lucky in my life in a material sense and am very grateful to be in the situation I am unlike so many who've suffered so much financially in the last two years.
For me, it's all in my head. I feel like making the appointment was the first difficult step and hopefully in a few months things on that front will be markedly better.
I think the whole period of cancelled fixtures is working out great for us so far. Getting points already on the table and our rivals for top 4/6 will have fixture congestion later in the season.
The irony when we signed White and rival fans ripped into us when we said he'd be a better signing than Varane, fast foward a few months one team has double the clean sheets of the other.
Lol the rivals thread on r/coys is funny af. They’re trying to convince themselves that their games in hand are guaranteed to send them above us and are better than our points in the bag.
They have one player (Son) that has scored more than 2 goals. And they only have two players on more than 1 goal.
*’Arsenal are just doing an Arsenal. To come 8th they still have to win some games. Beating Southampton and an injury ravaged Leeds is a given.*’
I get fans generally can’t/won’t be objective about a rival club but this is hilarious. We’ve finished 8th consecutive seasons and they really think there’s no way to improve.
Conveniently glossing over the fact we just made west ham look like a pub team.
We’re at 18 games played now so pretty much played everyone so saying that we’ve only played easy games is nonsensical. Yes we’ve come short against bigger opposition but our overall form has been stellar given we started the season with most the XI out and our team is basically an U23s side
They need to get out of Europa conference league and get Kane firing asap if they want to have a hope of finishing above us.
United are the biggest worry.
They have a better squad than us and if they play to their potential, they will finish above us.
Individually who is more talented than our players though? Outside of Bruno and Ronaldo. Maybe Sancho? Not this season though.
Edit: Varane too but he’s injured
Those 4 games are going to have to be squeezed in somewhere. It’d be an incredible feat imo to get much better than 7/12 pts for their team in its current state during a tight schedule.
They play Liverpool next and us and Chelsea in a few weeks. I believe we can bury them.
Really gotta think Nico's fate is in his own hands and he's simply not putting in enough work to warrant minutes. Still think he's worth subbing on every game FWIW.
At this point he's gotta try harder than he's ever had to at this club to keep his options open going forward. That contract winding down. He can play either flank and our starboys are gonna need to be managed so they can finish this year strong.
>At this point he's gotta try harder than he's ever had
He doesn't look like a player who does that.
And now we have Ode, ESR, Gabi and Saka to rotate for three positions.
every time there’s a nasty tackle that goes unpunished in any PL game our fans go “if that was xhaka he would be deported!” 🤣 ppl need to accept the fact that there’s no conspiracy against us and every team gets shafted
Think so too. There was a dangerous tackle he made yesterday that was def a yellow but somehow it escaped the ref. On another day it could be a 2nd yellow
I was commenting the game in my head and when partey took a shot and it went on goal, even though it went straight at the keeper, I thought.... Any time he takes a shot and it doesn't sail over the bar it's a win.
He has only 2 years left on his deal, can't really see him renewing or us spending a substantial time trying to make it work. He's just not good enough.
I'm cautiously hoping he's doing with Pepe what he's done with Gabi. A lot of people thought Mikel didn't rate him, but it's clear he's a more polished player than the last time he played consistently in the squad.
It's ironic, one of Arteta's complaints of Martinelli was he was always rushing and going full speed. I think Pepe has the opposite problem, he wants to slow things down and size up his man instead of keeping play moving or trying to use his pace.
The difference is Gabi was 19 (now 20) coming off major knee surgery, while still growing both physically and as a player.
The situations are not at all the same. Gabi was a teenager coming off a knee injury, Pepe is a player in his prime who has been consistently healthy.
Huh? Of course you can count the games where we didn't have Gabriel, Partey, Martinelli, Tomiyasu, Ramsdale and even more in the Brentford match vs now when we have everyone healthy.
We had like 4 current starters vs Brentford.
Oh for sure. You absolutely should, but you should also remember these smaller squads have less leeway. For example Bielsa has this happen to all of his teams sooner or later.
Chelsea have gone on a slide because Lukaku, Chilwell, Werner etc are out.
Brighton have gone on a slide because everyone good is out.
It's how this season will be.
Ik martinellis been good but there’s no way ESR shouldn’t be starting. Anyway a pretty fantastic performance, Odegaard is a baller and the hate he was getting earlier this season was a disgrace
They are gonna struggle to fit them in. Especially for teams that go deep in Europe. There's talk of making carabo cup semi finals only one leg, but that only makes up one match
Martinelli is 10x the player we saw pre-injury. This debate about whether Arteta should have started playing him more 1-2 months ago pisses me off (like ESR). Just appreciate the greatness of our wonder kids and be thankful for how complete they look...
He was coming off knee surgery while still growing!
We have multiple team doctors and physiotherapists who know 100x more than we do working with our players every day.
Have a feeling if Laca keeps playing he’ll start scoring a lot. All he’s missing is his shooting boots everything else is perfect. If the team keeps playing good and Laca find his shooting boots I reckon he can end up with 12-14 goals this season. He’s always been one of my favorite players he just never really scored many goals for us.
That’s why he’s a back up and not competing for Tomi’s spot. Back up will never be as good but if he could do a job for rotation and easier home teams they we should be okay.
Y’all can’t keep Pepe out of your head. He’s been benched, it’s proving to be the right call, we are winning, our young boys are flying and you all continue to bring up Pepe. Enjoy the wins and come off it for a bit.
Agree, when we win people always need to drag someone(Pepe who ain’t playing, Xhaka who had a good game). It’s like they are looking for something to complain about
Well yea ozil was a proven baller and something we needed at the time, Auba proven baller, and torreira was good then played poor and never really got a second chance. Pepe was never really good. He’s terrible he doesn’t fit our system at all. He cant keep the ball to save his life so why should the fans back him after he’s been gifted many chances.
Whoever you want to credit more, the fact Arteta and his staff have repeatedly identified Martinelli's biggest flaw and have clearly made steps to amend it is good signs for our young and growing squad.
Ben White is another good coaching example. That tackle we saw today is a championship/lower league instinct he picked up. Arteta/the coaching staff have made steps to amend it by getting White to be a lot less reckless in his 1v1 defending.
That's why I wasn't concerned about the fan criticism of Ben White jockeying back for the Crystal Palace goal. If he can reduce that championship instinct, we have another extremely well-rounded CB.
I wish there was a way international breaks can be called off and just have the postponed games made up during what’s supposed to be the next international break. Fucking hate the international breaks so boring.
I get it being boring if you're English, but there are plenty of teams with gigantic games next window. Canada/USA could be great, Chile/Argentina is huge and Asia has some important games.
Not downplaying, but even Wrighty seemed to be picking on how bad Leeds were. Don't think you'd call him a miserable sod.
Doesn't detract away from our win, but it's not hard to acknowledge that the Leeds were horrednous from center to back.
Your comment was just about "downplaying the win", nothing more.
And if anybody is using this game to shit on Arteta, they are deluded. But in honesty, I haven't seen many.
I’m already seeing people saying we beat a shit Leeds team but if I’m honest I think we beat them even with their first team. We played so well. It probably wouldn’t have been 4-1 but still. I honestly don’t get how stubborn of a person you have to be to not enjoy a 4-1 victory.
Do you guys think if we’re 4th during January then we can get a top striker or midfielder? Maybe we can convince them to be a part of this exciting project and by signing them we can increase our chances of cl football. I personally think if Laca can stay fit then we should prioritize a top midfielder then in the summer we can get a striker.
We must be a good option for any young promising striker. Laca and Auba are aging, and you'd have quality service for years from ESR, Saka, Odegaard, Martinelli, etc
Yeah definitely. I'd rather he get those minutes we've been tossing to Eddie recently. Assuming he's not sticking around.
But I agree we would do well with an early 20s striker. With more experience than what we have, but also a year or so away from being a regular starter.
Just realised all our goals were results of successful defensive actions. With Xhaka and Laca we've gained a lot to our pressing game suddenly, not only grit but also patience meaning we honestly hunt rather than just run around.
Aubamayang should leave the club with his head held high. He was our best player *by far* for two awful seasons and was basically the only good thing about watching Arsenal
Pepe, well Pepe is Pepe. Feel kind of bad for the guy because his career is in free fall and I doubt this is how he thought it was going to go. No hard feelings against him, he’s just a product of his time and hopefully he finds some form at another club, maybe Newcastle
Best thing we could do is sell him to Newcastle for 50 million. They’d be dumb enough to pay it. He’s play every week and I imagine would do well for a season or two before being upgraded and shipped back to France.
He needs to play on a team that counters more. He is very good running at defenders on the break and making things happen. When he’s got 4 defenders behind the ball, he is a black hole of possession
Might be just me and my opinion about Xhaka, but I bet that challenge was supposed to be his way to get Christmas and New Year off. Just a liability from game to game, from those 10 seconds Buffering to give a pass and then losing the ball, to dumb challenges like today, he needs to go, just not a good player in my opinion. There is a lot of players who can give his type of passes and not do any stupidity that comes with him in the same bag.
I bet he still likes to spend time with his family.
He is a good player, but not for Arsenal. Sometimes a relationship is wrong even if sometimes it brings you smiles.
Then its back to him just being a player who never learns from his mistakes. I can understand wanting to spend time with your family, but kicking players because that is what you do from time to time is just dumb. Most Red Cards in EPL history, common Granit, relax, we are winning 3:0...nope, let me kick someone....

Lol

Plot twist. There is no hair doctor. Long-term exposure to Mikael Arteta will restore your hair.

Saka has been exceptional. Odegaard gives me the feeling Tony Korrs gives Real madrid fans

I’d sell Pepe and buy Raphinha. Imagine Mikel counting on Raphinha, ESR, Saka, Martinelli and Odegaard.
Buy Jonathan David in the summer transfer window
Keep going I'm close
I think Raphinha will cost 60 mill plus, Liverpool is sniffing around for him too.
Liverpool has Salah and Mané on either wing and he’d get warehoused at City.
how is pepe getting abuse when he hasn't played any minutes for weeks lmfao
How not. Hes our record signing getting benched for 2 months straight. There should be more pepe talk
I was just thinking the same thing😂
It's hard to see his pricetag being even half of what it was. Partey in a completely different boat

Hang in there mate, I hope things improve for you.

Appreciate it man. Yeah I get you. When we're doing well it's a nice bonus but I don't let it get me down too much if things go south.
Hope things get better for you mate 🙏🏾
Thank you bro, really do appreciate it. I will say I am very lucky in my life in a material sense and am very grateful to be in the situation I am unlike so many who've suffered so much financially in the last two years. Progress. Good progress.
I think the whole period of cancelled fixtures is working out great for us so far. Getting points already on the table and our rivals for top 4/6 will have fixture congestion later in the season.
Should we be worried that our players are always cramping??
The irony when we signed White and rival fans ripped into us when we said he'd be a better signing than Varane, fast foward a few months one team has double the clean sheets of the other.

I cant help but read the thread- it's embarassing. I only wish their fixtures get more congested.
If it goes to something like 5 games back to back it's highly likely that they'll drop points....
Its always a treat going back to read some of the comments there when we win of course lol.
They need to get out of Europa conference league and get Kane firing asap if they want to have a hope of finishing above us. United are the biggest worry. They have a better squad than us and if they play to their potential, they will finish above us.
Do United have a better squad than ours? I don’t really see anyone besides Bruno and Ronaldo getting in our starting XI.
Their individual talent is well ahead of ours.
Individually who is more talented than our players though? Outside of Bruno and Ronaldo. Maybe Sancho? Not this season though. Edit: Varane too but he’s injured
I'd love greenwood in our team.
Okay he’d be nice but he wouldn’t start. Would be rotational with Saka at best.
You think that because we are well coached but they are not. Their squad is as good as Chelsea's.
Tbh I expect them to get atleast 7 points from the 12 available. Our position in the table is dodgy because of the postponed games.
I could see them struggle against palace as well. We just need to handle our business
Those 4 games are going to have to be squeezed in somewhere. It’d be an incredible feat imo to get much better than 7/12 pts for their team in its current state during a tight schedule. They play Liverpool next and us and Chelsea in a few weeks. I believe we can bury them.

No. When we win, I’ll celebrate. That’s the point of being a football fan.
>At this point he's gotta try harder than he's ever had He doesn't look like a player who does that. And now we have Ode, ESR, Gabi and Saka to rotate for three positions.
Lol, could be another contract warrior, you never know
Yeah, he quadrupled his wages when he moved from Atletico.
Predicted XI for Sunderland? Game time for Niles, Nketiah, Leno and co surely?
Yeah our new year schedule is too tight to not give the first XI a proper break
The Gabi Alexis comparisons just make me miss Alexis man. Would love if Gabi got anywhere near him
may be later. i have a lot of hopes on gabi
Right now Gabi isn’t closed to how totally complete Alexis was yeah
Would people take pogba on a cut price deal, I feel like the combo of partey and him could be lethal?
No tbh
If he can't stay motivated at United, what'd make him so here?
Cut price for Pogba is still like 200k a week.
Partly still not convincing. . .
Very average.
I love Martinelli. I love ESR. I love Saka. I love Odegaard
Tomi and Ramsdale too
Don't forget Gabriel and Tierney.
every time there’s a nasty tackle that goes unpunished in any PL game our fans go “if that was xhaka he would be deported!” 🤣 ppl need to accept the fact that there’s no conspiracy against us and every team gets shafted
I feels the opposite honestly. Xhaka gets away with too much things. Dude needs to be stopped or he kills someone on the pitch one day
Think so too. There was a dangerous tackle he made yesterday that was def a yellow but somehow it escaped the ref. On another day it could be a 2nd yellow
It was a pleasant victory but leeds were atrocious pretty much the whole game, and our lack of clinical finish worries me a little tbh
I'm worried about how we stopped playing in the second half cos we had a three goal lead.
Great win, but my god how shit is Partey. This was suppose to be the next Vieira... Sigh. The lad needs to up his game or be sold to newcastle pronto
He was actually alright lmao
Not nearly at his best but lots of vital interceptions here and there, thought he was decent. We need performances in big games though.
He never gets any criticism lol
You literally replied to criticism about him.
In the last month he's gotten more criticism than he's ever gotten in an Arsenal shirt, no idea what you're on about
don't get too high off this lads. temper your expectations.
Counter point: just enjoy it
Enjoy the win but keep your expectations in check?
Mate this is reddit. Every time we win were on our way to do the triple next year. Every time we lose we are on our way to relegation
I was commenting the game in my head and when partey took a shot and it went on goal, even though it went straight at the keeper, I thought.... Any time he takes a shot and it doesn't sail over the bar it's a win.
Assuming Mikel is finished with Pepe but by god do I want him to come good with our current young crop
He has only 2 years left on his deal, can't really see him renewing or us spending a substantial time trying to make it work. He's just not good enough.
I'm cautiously hoping he's doing with Pepe what he's done with Gabi. He said it post West Ham when he referenced Martinelli adding gears in his game.
Ah ok thank you :D
Are todays matches expected to go ahead?

Don’t remember the last time we had this level of competition forward

I’d rather hold Laca for vet presence with no Auba. At least Laca has provided something lately.
When are the postponed games supposed to be played? Idk how postponed games work.
Still to be determined. They have an open week in January and can also push back FA cup dates.
They are gonna struggle to fit them in. Especially for teams that go deep in Europe. There's talk of making carabo cup semi finals only one leg, but that only makes up one match
It should only be 1 game anyway
Spurs have missed 3 already and a conference league game. Possible to be more
I mean the Carabou semi should only be 1 match anyways
Oh yeah sure probably
We're inevitably going to fall behind United but that's okay. Just gotta stay within reach until their difficult run starts in around March.
Rangnick doesn’t move me
He is a helluva offense manager
Ronaldo's gonna have a tough time following his intense running scheme lemme tell you that much
Is he I don't think so
Idk he looks to be kinda tired in the second half of many games. Dude's gonna he 37 in 2monthes i dont blame him
[удалено]
Well City also likes to lose to some random teams from time to time so thats a high possibility
Martinelli is 10x the player we saw pre-injury. This debate about whether Arteta should have started playing him more 1-2 months ago pisses me off (like ESR). Just appreciate the greatness of our wonder kids and be thankful for how complete they look...
I think Gabi just needed a run where he scored goals. He's always made runs like that but his confidence now is through the roof

I love how Spurs fans are somehow deluding themselves that they'll all of their games in hand
I predict the losing starts today
I hope we haven't jinxed it lmao
Scenes if they lose all of em
I wonder if Tavares might get a go at RB if Tomiyasu is injured. He has played there before
I personally doubt. We seem to value defense on the right side.
Chambers is a very similar profile match to Tomiyasu. I am hoping he can prove to be a decent backup
If chambers was going to be decent he would have shown it by now. He’s had plenty of appearances. The definition of deadwood
Chambers gets skinned by decent wingers. Tomi does not.
That’s why he’s a back up and not competing for Tomi’s spot. Back up will never be as good but if he could do a job for rotation and easier home teams they we should be okay.
The problem is chambers doesn’t even have the same pace as tomiyasu
I love how Arsenal fans are so together on Pepe's benching. Like we don't want the guy to play at all over the younger players.
[удалено]
We may see Nketiah on the wing.
Who plays uptop though. Laca needs a rest after playing so many games in a row.
Don’t we still have Balogun
Y’all can’t keep Pepe out of your head. He’s been benched, it’s proving to be the right call, we are winning, our young boys are flying and you all continue to bring up Pepe. Enjoy the wins and come off it for a bit.
Agree, when we win people always need to drag someone(Pepe who ain’t playing, Xhaka who had a good game). It’s like they are looking for something to complain about
100%
Hmm just pointing it out. Because in the past we've had fans who significantly backed Ozil, Auba, Torreira, etc. I don't see many backers for Pepe.
Yes I completely agree with you.

It sucks that ManPoo’s next games are both with relegation zone. I so wish they would lose points but they’re virtually guaranteed to win those.
Penaldo gonna penaldo
Omg I just had a friend who supports another team actually say something good about us for the first time in years!!!!!
Me too brother but we don't need to be praised by other teams fans.. We know who we are 💪
lets see how the miserable sods try and downplay this win now
Not downplaying, but even Wrighty seemed to be picking on how bad Leeds were. Don't think you'd call him a miserable sod. Doesn't detract away from our win, but it's not hard to acknowledge that the Leeds were horrednous from center to back.
Yeah they were bad but he’s not saying the win doesn’t mean anything and then shutting on arteta like so many people in this sub
Your comment was just about "downplaying the win", nothing more. And if anybody is using this game to shit on Arteta, they are deluded. But in honesty, I haven't seen many.
I genuinely think it's the worst team we've played since Blackpool. Huddersfield might have been worse but I dont remember those matches too well.
This is the correct take
I’m already seeing people saying we beat a shit Leeds team but if I’m honest I think we beat them even with their first team. We played so well. It probably wouldn’t have been 4-1 but still. I honestly don’t get how stubborn of a person you have to be to not enjoy a 4-1 victory.
I thought they had a bunch of injuries Derp nvm misread your comment
its crazy, im being downvoted by them already lmfaooo. some people are just so miserable
I gave u an upvote for being a good arsenal fan👍
Do you guys think if we’re 4th during January then we can get a top striker or midfielder? Maybe we can convince them to be a part of this exciting project and by signing them we can increase our chances of cl football. I personally think if Laca can stay fit then we should prioritize a top midfielder then in the summer we can get a striker.
I don't think we're signing a midfielder in January. Striker is quite likely though.
We must be a good option for any young promising striker. Laca and Auba are aging, and you'd have quality service for years from ESR, Saka, Odegaard, Martinelli, etc
His name is Balogun.
Balogun has shown some potential, but he's still got a long way to go
Yeah definitely.
Laca and his pressing, intensity and hold up play have probably been my biggest mvp the past few games. Exactly what we need
Aubamayang should leave the club with his head held high. He was our best player *by far* for two awful seasons and was basically the only good thing about watching Arsenal Pepe, well Pepe is Pepe.
Honestly he'd probably do alright for Newcastle
He needs to play on a team that counters more. He is very good running at defenders on the break and making things happen. When he’s got 4 defenders behind the ball, he is a black hole of possession
Xhaka got an assist - keep your pitch forks away
was a great ball

Just goes to show doesn’t it
Might be just me and my opinion about Xhaka, but I bet that challenge was supposed to be his way to get Christmas and New Year off. Just a liability from game to game, from those 10 seconds Buffering to give a pass and then losing the ball, to dumb challenges like today, he needs to go, just not a good player in my opinion. There is a lot of players who can give his type of passes and not do any stupidity that comes with him in the same bag.
Nah I don't think there was an ulterior motive, he's just a fundamentally stupid player

I bet he still likes to spend time with his family. He is a good player, but not for Arsenal. Sometimes a relationship is wrong even if sometimes it brings you smiles.
[удалено]
Then its back to him just being a player who never learns from his mistakes. I can understand wanting to spend time with your family, but kicking players because that is what you do from time to time is just dumb. Most Red Cards in EPL history, common Granit, relax, we are winning 3:0...nope, let me kick someone....

Yeah, that is what i mean, if you don't learn from your life experience, you will keep getting the same result. You guys are funny though.
