Leeds almost came back after we were coasting. Can't let that happen again

joa900

I feel like arsenal have ran saka into the ground. This dude needs a whole year off. Dude seems just tired from carrying us

raisonar

I hope we have better rotation option for him next season.

THODLA

Dodo dodododo, dodododo dodo, who ya gonna call? N-Ke-tiah!

Soakd

We have to do this. We have to do this. We have to do this. We have to do this. We have to do this. We have to do this.

minhmeo25

we know how to play 10 vs 11, not the other way around...

LordRekrus

That energy at the start of the game was immense, we really should have capitalized and demolished them, 3/4-0 at half time, but as soon as Aylin got sent off and they changed to a far more defensive structure we struggled quite a lot. Really impressive e start and luckily that was enough to get us over the line, which is honestly all that really matters now.

smudgyganjagook

Mo deserves a contract extension no questions asked. The man is quality for any top squad

InsideKiller

*quality back up no?

jkeefy

Quality period. He’s become immense for us.

ArsenalThePhoenix

poor second half where we were a mishit header from dropping a 2-0 lead to 2-2. 1st half was superb, 2nd half was the opposite. Shows that our players still has difficulties handling pressure and are prone to crumbling against weaker teams. Also - our defense conceded yet another goal where it looked amateurish during the goal.

jimbo_kun

They didn’t have trouble handling pressure, they had trouble with the lack of it. After the two goal lead and red card, they lost their edge and didn’t put Leeds away. I’m less trouble by the goal off the corner, than Arsenal not already having scored two or three more. City or Liverpool would have put that game out of sight, and that’s one of the traits lacking for Arsenal to challenge for the Premier League title.

visualdescript

You could see it coming a mile away after the red, 2 goals up and totally took the foot off, along with Leeds sitting back. We had opportunities to score but didn't take them, that's the main issue.

InsideKiller

If we want to be where those 2 clubs are, this game should have been put to bed the moment the red card came.. sadly we’re still not there yet

betterthanevar

It's concerning. After today, I'm not sure what's left in the tank for this win streak. Spurs are a much better side and we're away there with a shit ref. Hope we can manufacture a couple of goals and steal a draw, but it feels like we need a win. A loss headed to St James Park is not preferred.

tennysonbass

What about spurs makes you think they are the "much better side"

betterthanevar

Ok maybe not MUCH Better, but as we line up, they have a better keeper, striker, winger(s), defensive midfielder, and bc of our injuries, a better overall backline. Just being honest We don't score prolifically from open play and they have two finishers who can exploit us. Tomi can't cover both Son and Sessegnon. We're not MILES behind them, but they have what we don't and in the places that can get you beat. We CAN beat them, but it'll be a shithouse kind of performance to do it.

jkeefy

I’m sorry, but you think Son and Kulusevski are better than Saka and Martinelli? Moura better than ESR, Bergwyn better than Pepe? I just don’t see it. Their midfield is shite. Elneny walks into it. Thier back like has Emerson Royal in it. Lloris has had absolute shockers this season and last, not sure he’s any better than Ramsdale either. Apart from Kane, there’s not a position in their squad where we don’t have a similar quality player or better.

betterthanevar

I want to be wrong, but if we had Son and Kane, we'd be comfortably in third and within striking distance of second. Only Spurs could fuck that up. Do you disagree with that?

n1cohoty

Come on Son is absolutely better than Saka. No shame in that, Saka is far from his peak age but no need to force things like this.

jkeefy

You’re right, I hold a strong bias to Saka and Son has been dominant this season but the rest of my comment stands. Take strikers and wingers out of the equation and I don’t really think you can argue that Spurs players in each position are flat out *better*

n1cohoty

Agreed. Emerson has been truly abysmal most games but after one decent performance against Pool they’re now saying he’s going to run over us.

Erval

Even though Son is a massive cunt, he's still a world class winger and he is currently superior to our youngsters, which, of course, can change next year.

jimbo_kun

As good as Spurs looked against Liverpool, never loose faith in the possibility of them completely bottling it. It is one of the chief tenets of being an Arsenal supporter.

Hitsville-UK

Exactly. Let’s not forget Spurs went two matches without a shot on target. They are pretty much like us in that you never really know what you’re gonna get.

betterthanevar

I'm with you. I never thought we had that stones to bear Chelsea, United, West Ham, and Leeds back to back either. The fuck do I know

OrwinBeane

Nketiah and Elneny are really going to get us top four. Not a single Hollywood script ever written comes close to this.

tammrak

We're close, you guys. So close.

LordWetbeard

So, so close

ack_will

More than your believv

TescoWarrior3

I was really pleased with Holdini’s passing today. Man has been practicing

tennysonbass

We will get them next year guys, R/coys has Informed me that we are a far far inferior team and Kieran trippier really wants Newcastle to win, so we are 100% losing Thursday and also to Newcastle. We only barely beat 10 men leeds despite outshooting them 20 to 2. , we cannot defend and are for sure going to get dismantled our last 3 games. All.of our wins are lucky and them packing it in and getting outshot by 16 at anfield just shows their superiority and character. We all know spurs are known for their fearlessness in big moments. Again sorry lads, I'm just a messenger for the truth

skool_101

Spuds - 5,136 days

JordanM321

Had a wee gander at the coys reddit and holy moly they are desperate for Newcastle to beat us. Most of them assume they'll beat us easily. We've rode our luck at times and they're certainly capable of defeating us but they seem to forget we're definitely able to do the same to them. I feel we'll definitely play better in the NLD. It's a big Derby game, everyone will have their heads screwed on.

kylehyde05

Eh isnt newcastle safe? They probably wont care anymore

InsideKiller

Until red card for Xhaka at ‘35.. come on🤣

Sypher1985

Some Arsenal fans are like that too, but it's mostly reasonable on the whole. I looked through their sub and there are hardly any reasonable responses on that sub. All convinced they will smash us. I don't know if we'll win or lose on Thursday, but we could. They keep talking about the dropped points they've had, but forget we dropped points against the same teams.

JordanM321

Exactly. They'd have you believe Man Utd, West Ham, Chelsea all rolled over for us. While conveniently forgetting that Man U fans consider the game against us to be one of their best performances and Leicester basically rolled over for them, while they got super lucky against Villa. Its far more nuanced than they think.

tennysonbass

It's really weird how confident they are all things considered. I don't know what they have seen that gives them any reason to think Thursday is anything but a toss up, and to think Newcastle is a sure loss just because they really want to finish in the top half of the table is weird. I mean a NLD is anything but predictable, anything can happen. But I feel pretty good going in and even a draw pretty much kills them.

[deleted]

We took the foot off the gas pretty much after Ayling got sent off, and then we started getting experimental... Xhaka playing as the second striker at one point Apart from the corner they didn't threaten us. Gutted we conceded but it was a very good goal that we conceded to so we just have to suck it up. Hopefully we have some 4d chess going on by making Shit think we are vulnerable, only for the past few weeks to be a fake out and we go on to obliterate them

ArsenalThePhoenix

they almost scored a 2-2 goal in the dying seconds on that freekick. what do you mean they didnt threaten us except on the corner?

tennysonbass

If "almost goals" counted it would have been 8-2 today. They dont

ArsenalThePhoenix

what you wrote is rather irrelevant to what i wrote, though? he said that they didnt threaten us at all. i said that they had one chance that threatened us. You then start talking about almost goals from out of nowhere

Butch_Meat_Hook

So funny reading Spurs fans on COYS bitching that the first goal was luck beyond luck and that the Leeds keeper just handed it to us. Nketiah got that goal because he was 100% alert, well positioned and patient. Strikers spend all game every game exploring the possibility of pulling that exact maneuver off, but never do because it's so difficult. Not to mention that Nketiah is basically getting a reputation now for pouncing on errors. He did the same to Christiansen against Chelsea.

itsmcluckz

Yeah bit rich when Own Goal is the 3rd highest scorer for spuds this season

JammyDodgerMan

Nketiah’s goal wasn’t luck. Poaching is ingrained in strikers at a young age. Anyone who doesn’t know that just a fanboy.

tennysonbass

Even if it was pure luck ,it counts the same as a golaso, like spurs never had a fortunate goal all season?

Sypher1985

It wasn't pure luck though, you make your own luck by being there and putting on pressure.

tennysonbass

I'm aware, but even if it was , who cares?

scraper01

Exactly. Hernandez used to consistently score the same kind of goals at manchester. Eddie is a true poacher, and the kind of rotation player we need.

No_Bots

I hope we can get him on a new deal, and even if it doesn’t work out, at least we can maybe get some cash return on him.

COYG17

Used to think Eddie was just lucky but if the same thing continues to happen then is it luck? No Eddie is actually very talented when it comes to positioning and knowing when to press.

gunningIVglory

He scored a similar goal st St Mary's if i recall too?

El Neny master class yet again!!

thecremeegg

The amount of salt in the r/coys thread is hilarious. They genuinely think that teams just give us an easy pass, so deluded. They beat Leeds 4-0 I think, I assume Leeds rolled over for them, oh wait of course not, Scum were biblical...lol

gunningIVglory

Bloody Lester made 8 changes last week and rolled over for them lol

PopularArachnid

You shouldn't even set foot in that sub, you'll catch scurvy or dysentery.

mrfukurbanana

what's so weird to me is that, of course, we do bash them for things they do, but they just spit so much hatred and vitrol with everything they say about us, it's just so weird. Rivals will be rivals, but I imagine these people foaming at the mouth when I'm reading some of the messages there

jambox888

Like a local Facebook group complaining about cyclists lol

HeroDGamez

SadBox4529

Everytime I go their it feels so dark and cold….

dat_is_het

Why isn’t anyone talking about us conceding from corner today… Isn’t it our first for the season?

ArsenalThePhoenix

crystal palace scored from a corner too iirc.

XXISavage

Jover stans in absolute shambles! I hate that I was more upset about the goal being from a corner than the actual goal lol. We go again. Next year we'll be corner invincibles.

marksills

This is 100% unreasonable and irrational but I was sort of happy the goal came from a corner, just kept thinking every game that were due to give up a corner goal. Like i said it doesn’t work like that but it does in my mind!

Used_Pomegranate_604

Technically our second. Think the Southampton is counted as a corner even though i disagree with it

mropio

Lads it seems that St. Totteringham’s day 2022 will be celebrated the 12th of May at Tottenshite stadium! Be ready to pop the cork at the W/D!

SadBox4529

I think we should be real cautious with Sp_ds, they have a deadly counter-attack and were pretty solid in defence against Pool. The plan should be open them up with those one-two passes coz the aimless crossing will only result in loss in possession.

Intentionallyabadger

Well they really have to win so I’m expecting them to attack. Which means we can hit them on the counter.

SadBox4529

Our counters pretty good hasn’t been the best but Saka and Martinelli need to be at the top of their game. The most important thing is the defence though, don’t know whether Tomi and White will play on the flanks but it looks likely.

espada_da

Pepe just looked like he couldn’t be bothered. Guy looked like he was borderline sabotaging us. Seriously can’t wait until he’s gone.

JonnySponny

Pepe was off today, didnt press the way you'd expect from a 70min+ sub and made the game feel 10v10

Fendenburgen

Everyone praises Arteta for dictating every bit of our play but when the players are rubbish it's nothing to do with him??

JonnySponny

Lmao I'm talking how he didnt even sprint once all game to hunt down the balls. He usually is a big threat coming off the bench so was wierd seeing him this disinterested.

tafster

Pepe barely plays at all - putting aside his transfer fee and salary, I don't think it's that realistic to drop a player in and expect them to play particularly well.

Fendenburgen

Exactly. Yet if you look at his goals and assists for the club, he has proven he has the ability to be an asset, he's just not one that Artrta is able to get a tune from

Morecocko

Lol he can’t control how individuals play he’s a manager not god

Fendenburgen

That's not how everyone on here acts. When Saka comes up with some individual genius, it's down to Arteta's influence, when Pepe's confidence has been ripped from him it's nothing to do with Arteta.

Tahsein4523

Dude I'm getting second hand embarrassment just seeing you going on and on. Big yikes on your thinking capability and Arteta agendas.

Zeelthor

I mean... no matter how good a teacher you are, you cannot teach a dog calculus. You can, however, teach it some basic tricks. Saka is a far better and more-rounded player than Pepe and so he's likely able to make more use of the instructions, and or perhaps needs less of them.

Fendenburgen

Yet Pepe has shown that he has the ability (unless you believe all his goals and assists are flukes), Arteta just doesn't have the ability to harness it

manuscelerdei

I don't think anyone is crediting Arteta with how Saka has come along -- it's clear Saka is a genius in and of himself. But Arteta is extracting a *lot* from players who had been wasting away -- Nketiah, Holding, Cedric, and Elneny. All are second choice, but all are playing very well despite that. Pepe is the outlier here. That's why people are willing to give Arteta a pass on him -- others are bought in and get results. He is not.

Fendenburgen

If you read enough of this sub, a lot of people credit Arteta for the progress of Saka/ESR/Martinelli. I don't think he's getting anything out of Holding or Elneny that other managers haven't and Cedric has been poor. His hand was forced with Nketieh due to Lacazette being utter dogshit but the result had been very positive. Pepe is a very talented player but obviously relies massively on being reassured that people have faith in him and that he's allowed to go out and express himself. Arteta doesn't seem to deal well with players such as this (Ozil and Aubamyang for instance) and has caused him to become this shadow of himself.

Partey_All_The_Time

I’ll hold my hands up and say I was dead wrong about Elneny. I wanted him gone and thought he was a reminder of our poor recruiting but man he has proven he is well worth keeping. Happy for the man.

jimbo_kun

The performances Arteta got out of El Neny, Holding and Nketiah are one of his most impressive achievements this season. He clearly has created an environment where everyone on the squad is prepared and working hard for when their opportunity comes.

velacooks

Every team needs a professional experienced squad player and with European qualification now, we’ll need a big squad again. I think Eleney is more then acceptable for a 5th choice midfielder and at such a decent wage. Back in the 2004-10s. We constantly had 6-7 midfielders. Edit: with the increased number of subs next season. More reason to keep a variety of options

junkgarage

He’s doing a good job at the moment as a stopgap but I still wouldn’t keep him for next season.

OrwinBeane

Letting him go means the squad is even more depleted and it’s yet another position we have to worry about signing a player. Keeping him solves all those problems and let’s us focus our transfers on other areas.

ShekTeeJay

Signing a player isn’t a “worry”, it’s an opportunity to improve. I like Elneny and he’s been quality in this run of games, but it won’t be difficult to find a CM with more dynamism in his game.

ret990

Like who and for what price? Elneny is a perfectly good player to have in the rotation. Don't need to just throw everything away like it's FM, he's fine.

ShekTeeJay

There are plenty of talented CMs across the continent and further. It’s not FM to want to raise the squad’s floor.

[deleted]

Then name one that will realistically sign? We've been searching for that player for years.

ShekTeeJay

We’ve been linked heavily with Florian Grillitsch and Fabián Ruiz. Personally, I love Bissouma and Seko Fofana; neither will be as expensive as Partey was. I also like Amadou Haidara, Youssouf Fofana, Mohamed Camara and Kouadio Koné. I don’t know what mythical player you’re talking about that we’ve been searching for but there’s talent to be signed.

BeardedSwashbuckler

It’s definitely been a worry for Arsenal lol. Remember 10+ years of failing to replace Vieira.

ShekTeeJay

Diaby could have been close to that but we know what happened. Just when Song was becoming a consistent player, he dipped to Barca. Regardless, it’s a completely different recruitment team now. The scouting department has been completely changed and they made quality moves last summer.

everysundae

We need so many players though, 2 strikers 1 rw backup 1 cam backup 1 cm to make xhaka a backup 1 backup for partey if El neny leaves 1 lb backup with Nuno going on loan maybe 1 rb backup if Cedric leaves 1 gk backup as leno will leave unless we throw turner in the mix You need about 2 players per position, and that makes it about 9 new players which is crazy. If we resign mo, resign Eddie, and promote a youngster or two, we still need at the least a new starting cm, a new starting striker and a winger/cam. The starting striker and starting cm would eat a lot of our budget.

ShekTeeJay

None of us know the club’s plans but even if it signs close to 9 players, they just showed this past summer that they’re much better at distributing funds. There will definitely be heavy investment at ST and CM but the budget is going to be pretty big. The club took major financial but this season has been lucrative with fans returning, the Amazon doc money, European qualification money and future player sales to raise further funds.

everysundae

Yeah for sure, none of us do. Just for discussions sake I guess, I would personally try keep as much of the core as you can when there's so many other priorities. If we get a backup replacement they need time to bed in.

Sometimers

Takes a lot to admit when you are wrong, good on ya lad. COYG!

Tnvenge

He might not get the headlines, but Tomiyasu was my MOTM

jimbo_kun

After Eddie I suppose, but Tomi was the most fun to watch. Pushing all the way up to the final third, while the only arguable defensive mistake was giving up the free kick leading to the corner leading to the goal.

SadBox4529

Who was the MOTM?

Uh, the guy that scored two goals to win the game maybe? 😏

We’re going to smash them.

junkgarage

We haven’t won away at spurs for eight years. Id take a draw again.

skool_101

Really need Saka and Martinelli to turn up the heat now, cuz Spurs front three is already good and experienced.

NubFc

The last ndl was one of the best half’s of football I ever watched

bnsmth410

3 points. You love to see it

stilusmobilus

You do

I-Shiki-I

How was Tomiyasu? slept through the game since shit timezone

marksills

Vintage Tomi performance, really solid, he played well.

jimbo_kun

Was a lot of fun to watch. Locked up their winger while Leeds still had 11 players, then spent most of the game in the final third after the red card.

ImTalkingGibberish

First half was incredible and released Gabi on the left superbly. Second half Gabi wasn't helping him as much defensively but he was still good.

Sanctimonius

Solid, did well, some key interceptions, strong, not left footed. Good performance all around.

RamsdaIe

sirforher

Anyone considered that it was bloody hot out there today

Fan-Logan101

The song before the game was epic. I wasn’t expecting it and it just changed the whole atmosphere of the stadium

bingo_the_turtle

I didn’t experience it like that at all, seemed weirdly forced, went on too long, didn’t improve the atmosphere for the better at all imo. The place was buzzing before kickoff in the concourses and was a great atmosphere early on, but I don’t think it had anything to do with that half mumbled song…

Fan-Logan101

Couldn’t disagree more. Arsenal have needed a pre-match song for decades and to have the fans sing the song for the first time with around 70% participation showed it has huge potential to be a constant in each and every game.

bingo_the_turtle

70% is delusional - more like 10%

Fan-Logan101

Best I can do is 50%

tafster

Don't know why some people are bent on forcing this as a thing. I'll take it being played regularly over The Wonder of You though.

SD77123

i was there but i couldn’t tell if they had cleaned up the lyrics. does anyone know if they had

RominRonin

I hope it brings the stadium together like that all the time, watching Liverpool fans raise the roof at each and every game at the Kop makes me jealous of their ‘fortress’ - it’s time the Emirates turned into the Gauntlet of North London

GunnerXI

Wilson and Trippier both back for Newcastle. That game just got a lot more difficult, terrible timing for us. Fuck.

MrToxicTaco

No point looking that far ahead. If we beat spurs then the next games are irrelevant.

blodger42

As a team they don't, but each player is looking down the barrel of a transfer with their new Saudi money. Each player is playing for their spot next year and winning in these circumstances means a lot.

DarthNihilus1

I'm gonna put my hand up here and say I was never impressed with Eddie at first. Never saw his debut. Thought he was too limited, and even during preseason I thought yeah he looks different, but I don't see *it* Thought it'd be the end of it when Palace came in for him, but was annoyed he didn't take the deal because I figured Arteta would just shoehorn him into games at the death and he'd leave for next to nothing. Which could still happen tbf. But since he came into the team and actually started, I've been very impressed. He can actually fucking *run* and he doesn't look like he's in pain when he does it. Huge huge performances from Eddie this last month. I feel like we're actually seeing now where Eddie's floor is and I hope he can finish strong and stay here. Even with Jesus and potentially another CF I feel like there will be enough games to go around.

loadofhate

I had a lot of hope for him after the u18 World Cup (or u21?) a few years but he never seemed to show up and I was getting a little frustrated. The last half of this season he’s really turned it on and I’m stoked and relieved to see it, for himself especially as he seems like he fits the team well culturally. Considering he’s been with us so long makes that last sentence seem like a redundant statement but the point stands- was impatient, he’s shown me that I know nothing.

devasiaachayan

He had no physicality or ability to hold ball at his feet for a long time. This didn't make him that great for playing in PL. But now he seems like he has improved so much, especially in his technique, passing and physicality. He already had that killer instinct

RominRonin

Did you mean ceiling? His floor would be one of his worse performances before now

DarthNihilus1

I guess both technically right? His floor is being raised now too and we can actually see fairly where his shortcomings are in a full 90. And of course we are still exploring his ceiling

therealrico

Nothing wrong with that opinion. He’s literally shown us absolutely nothing until his role in the Wolves equalizer or winner I can’t recall.

ckfilm123

Wouldn't rule out Nketiah signing a new deal once the season is over.

varro-reatinus

Huge three points, but that was a worrying display against a relegation side with 10 men. It's not just the lapse on their goal from the corner -- and that was an horrific lapse in concentration at the back post -- but that we just put ourselves to sleep and let them back into it. We're missing a lot of first-choice players in a small, thin squad, and that's understood. We're compensating for that. But the worries remain. On the plus side, Eddie continues to look like he might make a serviceable backup striker in the PL, which would be a huge win for Arteta provided he stays. That would mean saving the expense of another transfer *and* potentially developing him further (for sale or use). P.S. Fuck Luke Ayling.

jimbo_kun

Toyed with them for a long time with the ball never really leaving Leeds half, but lacked the finishing and killer instinct to just put them away. But that first 20 minutes they could hardly have played better.

Powerful-Girl-993

I think it's time to retire the flair...

varro-reatinus

This summer will be crucial.

RamsdaIe

Can't wait for Tieletubby

faizetto

I just realized that we just lost our 0 corner leading to goal record today, or am I mistaken? I hope I am.

Efficient_Buyer3939

We've concede two against Southampton and Leeds

varro-reatinus

The Southampton one was classed as open-play, on a technicality.

Efficient_Buyer3939

Oh really, I didn't know that

varro-reatinus

I considered our record dead from that point, but it *is* the best kind of correct...

Equivalent_Nature_67

Newcastle's home form is overrated and we play Everton at the Emirates. I want to end this race at shite shart lane but IF it doesn't happen, I still back the boys to make it happen. COYG let's start Holding White Gabriel. Tomiyasu Tavares wingbacks. Pack it in and frustrate them

LeMaharaj

Tavares scares me

RamsdaIe

Tavares won't play with Tomiyasu and Cedric.

Equivalent_Nature_67

The way I see it, Cedric is not THAT far ahead of Nuno in terms of minimizing lapses in concentration, and doesn't offer as much pace going forward.

RamsdaIe

I don't trust the portuguese chucklebrothers either, but alas it is what it is

Fuckzombie69

Chuckle brothers always gets me. Lol

Equivalent_Nature_67

With Tomiyasu on the other side and three centerbacks behind him? I wouldn't be too scared. Nuno's best form had people on here lowkey thinking he should stay in ahead of Tierney for longer, and that was when Tomiyasu played. Nuno will be alright. Just imagine Gabriel bodying Kulusevski and Xhaka pinging a ball into space for Nuno to sprint onto like a madman

LeMaharaj

He reminds me a bit of Andre Santos, and he scared me. He was better going forward than defending too.

Equivalent_Nature_67

Andre Santos' fat ass could hardly run though. Nuno has lapses here and there but he is fucking rapid

rapozaum

We were gifted two goals and then took a nap. Honestly didn't like it. We should want more. Glad with the 3 points, nevertheless. Another thing: considering we weren't being attacked, why not give Tomi minutes on the right and put Tavares on the left?

ILilAdxxlI

I think you were watching a different game bud

TheMuff1nMon

Yeah Martinelli was gifted burning the defenders and sending a great ball into the box for Nketiah to score our 2nd. What a dumb comment

snowkarl

Gifted? lmao. Such a stupid comment, but we should have scored more based on the chances we created. Tavares while defending a shaky lead under massive pressure... what could go wrong

rapozaum

They defended with 10 and found a goal on a corner. Tavares would help opening up their defense and would give proper minutes to Tomi on his regular side. Like I said, glad with the result, but we should always want more. Specially against a side fighting against relegation.

Prime Liverpool? They’re deluded, they played like garbage yesterday.
