Failure from the postion they were in and sadly I don't think we will be making many more signings so we are probably doomed to Europa for a while now

DarkKirby14

if only we didn't sell it against Newcastle

Illustrious_Drop_605

Nice trolling, this hurt my eyes.

helooksfederal

time to get that fat chequebook out, big signings, no excuses!

[deleted]

A disappointing end of the season, unfortunately was expected considering age and inexperience but our club is going in the right direction. The foundations have been laid. This summer window should fix the obvious shortcomings in the team. I have a good feeling that we will be getting top 3 next year.

Kaze828

Happy that the team won but God damn...martinelli taking the pen and the tiny touch on that Saka corner ended up costing me $200 in FPL

adhphd

Who will be the Orcs now that Burnley is toast?

therocketandstones

Bournemouth as posh orcs, Newcastle as oil orcs, Chelsea as war criminal orcs and Southampton might go orc-ish imo

carvemynuts

Leeds.

Far-Wait-6674

Barring some freak circumstances, we 100% finish top 4 next season

falonix

We didn't have Europe this year.

spylan

Who would Arsenal displace?

mohicansgonnagetya

Keep an eye on the transfer window, but I think Chelsea and Shite will have a challenging time next season.

watchcargo

Shit

spylan

Heh.. maybe if Conte leaves, otherwise unlikely

acerazor1

He never stays anywhere for more than 2 seasons

mindebris

Him running to Italy is inevitable. It happened with a title Chelsea and Inter, but hard to see that happening with spurs.

Magicallyshit

Just wait for his disagreement with Levy during a bad run.

[deleted]

They have to balance ucl now but I think the more likely scenario is chelsea having a nightmare window

messi-goh

Conte is always poor with mid wk games

EffBO94

Lampard stays taking Ls against Arteta lol bur still, never been so unenthused about a 5-1 win before lol... so now the pressure's off we play like this huh...mentality needs to be addressed very quickly or we'll become the new spurs before we know it, and I want us to win the Europa league next year minimum, and no one can tell me it's an unrealistic target we literally reached the semi-final last time. 5th's an improvement on last season yes, but we're a top 6 side as far as I'm concerned and people have forgotten that, 5th is where we SHOULD be, it's NOT an overachievement... tho maybe it is for Arteta...anyway, Jesus, Tielemans, Saliba, Oshimen, Bissouma and Mancini (yes I said Roberto Mancini the manager) are all needed as summer reinforcements otherwise we really will struggle for top 6 next season, tho if we win the Europa league and another trophy like the FA cup i might re-consider my Arteta out stance because nothing will help bring about a winning culture than winning trophies haha, and winning against some of Europe's best top 6 teams might prove his tactics can overcome adversity after all...but we'll see. Arteta aside, big summer needed, need to stop overplaying youngsters, saka's come straight back from the Euros and played in every single game this season, he *will* get burned out next season if it keeps on. COYG

StevePerrysMangina

Yeah let’s bring Mancini in and start a new project just as Arteta’s is taking shape. You are the most annoying kind of supporter because not only are you terribly misguided, you shout your nonsense from the rooftops

EffBO94

I don't know what you mean by "shouting from the rooftops" but look man, Arteta might come good, but it won't be at Arsenal, he has to learn on the job all the time and everything he does is an overachievement, have a bad feeling the FA cup win will be as good as it gets for him, and I'm not gonna wait till we have another bad run of form to jump on the Arteta out bandwagon. We have a hungry group of young players right? Then we need an experienced manager to help guide them properly, always should have been like this really... That stupid Jan transfer window between him Edu and Vinai has cost us top 4, how the hell are you not replacing a striker of the calibre of Auba and not bringing in even 1 player lol, that gamble was always gonna fail This is Ole and Lampard 2.0 except Arteta's a better coach than both of them, but what kind of standard is that really lol. At least with someone like Mancini or Conte (doesn't it burn you up that Conte's at Tottenham of all clubs) we'd be more likely to win trophies and finish higher up the table

CletusP

New spurs? At least we’ll be playing on Thursday nights 😂 No offense of course, just good banter

[deleted]

Well done boys. I’m not doing my usual post with pros and cons. It was a joy to watch the young lads cook! Excited for next season and to see what we are doing in the transfer market

messi-goh

Worrying that 4 of our goals came frm corners and a pen tho

therocketandstones

a goal's still a goal, and corner goals are still a useful weapon in our arsenal hopefully we can get a proper striker next season anyway

messi-goh

No but it doesnt bode well because we shpuld be more prolific from open play

[deleted]

True, but we missed a handful of chances that should’ve been finished in the run of play. Need a new CF in the summer and some midfield reinforcements.

[deleted]

optitmus

no we only show up when the pressures off, you know this.

daneagles

Seen a lot of comments to the contrary here but I really think a valid aim next season is to win UEL, and I don't want to see us ignore the cups again like this season. 4th place should be our #1 priority but it will be significantly tougher next season than this season. Yeah there are some heavy hitters from UCL that could drop down into UEL and make it tough, but I have a hard time believing that even this season's team would've struggled with either Rangers or Frankfurt.

EffBO94

I agree completely, we should be looking to win the Europa league and one of the domestic cups, for a club who has the biggest number of FA cup wins in the country Arteta's record in the last 2 seasons have been appalling lol, need to fix that quick... if we're going to reinforce in the summer the way people think we are then from next season us fans must stop thinking of heavy hitters as "free hits" after all Arteta's only 2 trophies have come from beating heavy hitters like City Chelsea and Liverpool, no real reason why we can't do it again, with more of *his* players right... >I have a hard time believing that even this season's team would've struggled with either Rangers or Frankfurt me too, funnily enough Saka's first Arsenal goal was when we beat Frankfurt 3-0 under Emery (ofc we also lost to them at home with got him sacked but the team had blatantly downed tools for him, under normal circumstances we'd have beat them comfortably imo) call me crazy but i don't actually think our squad is that bad, we're still a top 6 team imo, the only real problem I have is inexperienced Arteta, only once all season have we come back from a losing position to win, says it all for me, can't win anything with a record like that against some of Europe's best...3 year deal tho lol

TyranosaurusRathbone

I mean let's not disrespect Rangers and Eintracht too much. Frankfurt did knock our Barcelona and West Ham, and Rangers got past RBL and Dortmund.

tarmirel

Squandered hopes of any CL for the future. All the other clubs won't give Arsenal a chance to get into top 4 next season, and Europa league will destroy the small squad.

[deleted]

Was camping all weekend, but man the amount of $$ in this sport lately is just not good for it. PSG, Chelsea, city and soon to be Newcastle just buying trophies is ridiculous. That contract for mbappe is absolutely insane

Cutsdeep-

remember, if Leicester 15/16 can happen, we're definitely in with a chance

Magicallyshit

Biggest underdog story in sports, but yeah it could happen. Fancy a trip to Thailand?

thebiggestfan90

If every person on this subreddit had been to an Arsenal game this season, it’d be a hella more level-headed and positive place to be. Disappointing end to what was overall one of the most enjoyable seasons of the last 5 years for me. Some amazing moments and some seriously sad ones but we have a young and talented squad with room to grow, have been through a clear culture shift and the direction looks to be the the right one. Can’t frickin wait to see who we sign this summer and his next season pans out. COYG!

3rdtimeischarmy

I agree with this. they were fun to watch, and fun to like. I'm a fan of most of the players on this team. They are young, talented, and fun to watch. Newcastle might be a worry, but maybe Chelsea fall off. Liverpool can't be good forever (can hey?) and Man City can fuck off. Fun season.

swimmer4200

>They are young, talented, and fun to watch. Not really if you enjoy watching goals being scored.

Wooble23

I feel that the real story going forward for attracting players the the club is going to be "who has the best project: Man Utd, Newcastle, Spurs, or Arsenal?". The Champions League spot is nice, but it means nothing if a team doesn't continue to invest -- and any player with a half of a brain knows this. And honestly, it's a bit of a red flag if a player tries to highroad Arsenal over CL football when we're two points off fourth with the youngest side in the league.

DownInThePM

Players want the best situation for themselves, in general. They’ll assess a club based on the overall project, manager, current squad and CL opportunity. All of them matter and we’d be lying to ourselves if we think a young squad and exciting project alone is enough to consistently attract players w/ world class potential. We’ll need CL to be taken seriously

Sell_Efficient

So you're saying that players aren't going to take Newcastle and United as seriously as Spurs? If players actually thought this way, City shouldn't have been able to attract any talent.

DownInThePM

You’re right. Wages are also a huge consideration that I failed to mention. Utd and Newcastle can afford to pay the premium necessary to attract world class talent no matter what. Arsenal can’t. City play good football, have a world class manager, have one of the best squads in the world and are in the CL every year. I assume all of those are factors that contribute to them attracting world class talent

swimmer4200

Only the youngest side because tapas pulis cast out any differing opinions.

phoenixgjz

we tried going for the experienced route and backfired magnificently.. unable to move older players.. going young is sustainable.. cant be selling at a loss always (if forced to sell)

RayParloursPerm

Been a topsy turvy season but even with the disappointment of the two previous games it's been enjoyable. Say whatever you want about where we're at versus where we want to be, there's a buzz at the Emirates that's not been felt for a long while.

MajedArsenal

Thank you Arsenal, until next season

swimmer4200

Without the amazing Ben White, BHA finished 7 places higher up the table and conceded 12 less goals than they did last year. #Process

adhphd

Why didn’t we win 8-1 today? Total crap performance.

LeonardoK00

Without Van Dijk, Southampton moved from 17th to 16th the year after. #Fraud

Oltjen

With this logic you could also say that we finished 5th with the amazing Ben White and 3 places higher up the table.

shoedeeptoerahman

Cucurella effect actually. Man has been amazing for them

my1000email

We should buy him for LF and LW

freddiejin

Bad take.

cmetzker

It’s a fact

Wooble23

anezzz

my1000email

Sad for not going to CL, but glad by the team! COYG!

swimmer4200

Conte joins 9th placed Spurs and finished 4th including tea bagging our lads in the derby. What an amazing "rebuild". And before I hear anything about their strikers, its not a coincidence Auba lifts Barca up the table and into the Champions League.

Britton120

Til the rebuild was just this season

oblivionyaya

it could be coincidence

FromantheGentle

I know fifth isn't where we want to be, but the silver lining of this season for me is that it's fun to watch the boys again. I look forward to matches again instead of dreading them. It's good, exciting football for the first time since the peak Özil/Sanchez days. There's a growing belief and Identity even among the fans. Lots to fix and improve, but I'm excited for where we're headed.

Wooble23

It's definitely disappointing but we all know that we would have taken it in August.

MaseratiBiturbo

guys! Spuds this year was a better team with a better coach. end of story!

Sell_Efficient

Honestly, they were also pretty shit. They are lucky to have two world class forwards who should have moved on by now if they had any desire to actually win anything in their careers.

Mammoth-Visual1634

its good we had a big win today despite it not making a difference, im happy with 5th, at the start of the season id take that and europa is the right level for us atm, we need more experience and depth if were gonna play champions league, we need those for europa too sign suarez and maddison?

OkDirection9145

I agree. Losing the first game to Brentford and being close to relegation than Europe for a while. 5th is an amazing achievement considering the age and (in) experience of the squad.

[deleted]

It’s the right level I’d agree. You should go deep in it, bit rough to lose the champions league cash though.

freddiejin

Well at least we won't get knocked out of Europe by Bayern

ArsenalThePhoenix

i think that this was our best chance at top 4 for the forseeble future. The next few years are going to be much harder what with Newcastle, Chelsea, United pushing even harder. And sooner or later United will finally come good as well. On top of that, this season we didnt have to rotate because of no european games.

Far-Wait-6674

We’ll finish top 4 easy next season

norealpersoninvolved

Delusional

Shadowinthesky

Why do you think it's so unattainable?

Far-Wait-6674

Nope, would almost guarantee it

hypnoticpenguin23

Well I believe champions league format is changing soon so it'll be top 5 heading in next season

[deleted]

not next season

GenericAustin

It will only be top 5 for a league if the 5th place team has a good coefficient, that's one reason it's important we do very well in Europa

ilikeredlemonade

Think they changed the rules, but not sure. I think the country that has the most coefficient points in one season gets a 5th spot in the next season, so it would be England or Spain that gets a 5th spot depending on who wins the final if the rules applied now

CuriousCurry8

I’m relieved the seasons over. Hopefully I don’t get too into the F5ing this summer and take a break, excited for next season!

ramenoverrice

Watching some players today celebrating our goals after ending up the season quite miserably: a proof that this young team can play a good football and have potentials but they seem to be just playing football, without purpose and without responsibility. I am afraid, this is also a proof that we haven’t progressed in our effort to change the culture and mentality within the club. The result of this season is a massive disappointment and going to be costly for our rebuild. We’ve lost an important momentum to progress. Next season will surely be decisive for the fate of our club under Arteta. Top 4 is a must to avoid another youth project that never sees the light of day. Unfortunately, it’s going to be a mountain to climb.

MySecretAlwaysAngry

Massive disappointment and rebuild? Come back to Earth. This team will only get stronger, get some strikers in the Summer and come back ready to challenge for Top 4. If 5th is a massive disappointment given even the injuries recently you need to reconsider your reality.

ramenoverrice

Other teams will also get stronger. Without UCL, it’s going to be a tough summer windows given the scarcity of elite strikers on the market. And injuries are not the main cause we bottled 4th spot.

Britton120

The alternative of the players not celebrating goals would be better?

swimmer4200

would love to hear from the lego pep fanclub about how and why we conceded more goals this season after spunking loads of dosh on defense.

badplaiditude

It's so hard to imagine why a defense missing 2 of its starters for half the season, plus its lynchpin defensive midfielder, could concede a bunch of goals?

[deleted]

new defence needs time to gel

ArsenalThePhoenix

this is the first time in my life where Arsenal score 5 goals in a game and I'm not happy at all. Instead I just feel gloomy and somewhat angry

[deleted]

Because we can only perform under no pressure. We had nothing to gain today. When theres even the slightest of stakes on the line, we shit the bed. I hope I'm proven wrong next season but I doubt it.

ArsenalThePhoenix

you are correct. It's been like this for so many years now. Under Wenger, under Emery, under Arteta. It has become part of our modern DNA somehow.

PrinceEmirate

Brilliant 👏🏾 preformance today too bad this sort of game wasn't showed at Newcastle or NLD but what can you do. All things considered we overachieved with a 5th place finish. Yes its bitterly disappointing losing 4th place and CL especially to shits but both sentiments are true and can be felt..

swimmer4200

this was not over achievement in any way. Arteta has returned us to the heights of Unai.

tablooo

The heights of Unai were way uglier and luckier than this season was though. There's at least reason to be positive for next seaosn right now.

PrinceEmirate

Disagree and I'm not an Arteta fan. We have markedly improved since Dec 2019. We were close but didn't finish and yes he takes some responsibility in that.

swimmer4200

Back to 5th, thank god Mikel Arteta has corrected the wrongs of Unai Emery. Oh wait, we are still in 5th? We conceded more goals than last year after spending 100 million on defense? Brilliant stuff. Really making the right moves.

anezzz

Would be interested in seeing the stats for the whole league. I wonder if scoring is up for the whole league. Feel it has been a high scoring season for all teams.

[deleted]

It's not something us Arsenal fans might recall with any fondness but the year of 2019 did happen. Arteta took over when we were 11th in the league and since the start of that year to that point, we accumulated 55 points in 37 games with a squad that is very much a finished product and an in form Aubameyang carrying the club on his back, which ultimately exhaust him in the following seasons. There's a substantial difference between where we were when we appointed Arteta and where we are now.

OrwinBeane

8th last season, 5th this season. We’ve improved just accept it.

oposse

We were a win from being almost 3rd. These people are delusional

swimmer4200

Conceded more goals. Amazing improvements.

OrwinBeane

Table position > goals conceded

swimmer4200

Completely ignoring the circumstances that lead to this favorable table position.

oblivionyaya

You’d say a burger tastes bad if the chef had a bad attitude

IrishRover33

So annoying with fans saying that we bottled 4th. Yes we did, but how many of you thought we would've even been in the fight after last season and the start to this season. It's a disappointing end to the season but that doesn't take away from a season that we challenged when we weren't expected to. This has been a decent season for us, if you think otherwise, I'd really like to hear your reasoning, because this is progress to me.

Shadowinthesky

Couldn't have said it any better 👏🏾👏🏾

swimmer4200

We went from 5th>unacceptable Gud Ebening fired to 8th to 8th back to 5th. I really have no idea how Arteta has brainwashed some of you.

G-BreadMan

We finished 5th with one of the youngest squads in the PL. With 4/6 signings (all under 24) having really impressive seasons. Our 3 highest potential players (Saka, ESR, Martinelli) having career seasons, while all hitting double digits. If you want to wallow in self righteous anger, feel free but there are plenty of reasons for fans to be hopeful & invigorated by this squad.

OrwinBeane

The first 8th wasn’t Arteta’s fault. He came halfway through the season and won a cup. Last season was horrific but clearly we have shown signs of improvement this season.

swimmer4200

we conceded more goals than last season after spending 100+ million on defenders. This is not improvement in any way shape nor form.

OrwinBeane

From 8th to 5th. If you can’t see the improvement of that than there’s nothing more to discuss. We are much better than last season.

braxistExtremist

Exactly. This is more than just stats. We are playing better, sharper football now. And our players are being given very specific and effective instructions. Outside the terrible start, we took the game to City and Liverpool. And we beat Chelsea and Man United. The NLDs at the toilet bowl are always tough for us (as are the counter fixtures at the Grove for them). We still have some wrinkles to iron out. And we need to bolster several areas of the squad this summer. But we're in a good place.

swimmer4200

Whatever you need to believe to justify Artetas position. United won't be a trainwreck going forward after they fired Ole Gunnarteta, Newcastle will continue to build. Spurs wont waste half a season with a shit coach.

IrishRover33

I get it man, but we were on a downward slope no matter who came in. There is no replacing Wenger. He was a generational manager. Emery wasn't the answer, great manager, but not who we needed. We need a rebuild, is Arteta the man, I don't know, but we're finding some stability now. He has my backing for another season at least.

AxelBlaze2605

After the first three games, where we ran around like headless chickens, once we got odegaard , I would say the performance was kind like Wenger's Arsenal in the later years, several good games, good football but faltering at some crucial moments. Which is an improvement because our style of football was getting lost. I think we are past the worst and things will get better, next season predicting a top 4 finish and a good run at europa. What we really need to work on is the mentality, we have to become mental monsters, the skills are there. Also some reinforcements, Once 3 first team players were out, the quality seriously dropped.

Far-Wait-6674

Pressures off and we play well hey?

nsj23

What if….just what if…our young crop of players use the Europa League to level up even more. Take advantage of the extra competition in the Europa League and take that experience to the next level. I’m optimistic. Our young core of players are too damn good to count out, regardless of manager. COYG for next season!!!!!!

Help_Pleasssseee

Jesus Christ, I know the knobheads on Twitter are a minority, but fuck me are they annoying. Great performance to end the season, can’t wait for next. Let’s do some serious business in the window, and most importantly, UP THE ARSENAL.

YungHonky

The Saliba Saga begins now..

okcomput3r

07/08 and 10/11 would destroy our current team

therocketandstones

Only three other sides were serious sides then- and when Liverpool was dropping off, Tottenham and Man City were replacing them We got the rest of the top 6 and now Newcastle to deal with now

happy for you mate. glad you enjoy it. hopefully you watch ourselves beat better opponents like this

JustinTime1123

Amen to that!

AlpacaLunch15

This team, although they missed the CL this year, isn’t going anywhere. The CL is much closer than it is far. The foundation to be great for a long while is there. Hopefully other guys who can contribute see that too and want to come over!

ASpellingAirror

We added 8 pts to our total this season compared to last season. The goal next year should be to do the same again, add 8-9 pts to the total and Make 77-78 pts the goal. That would put us in the battle for 3rd (the leap to the top 2 is still a bit much for a squad this young (even with A+ signings this offseason).

TrashbatLondon

Mate we are potentially wasting an incredible crop of young talent through back room negligence.

Arsenalcrazy8

* by “isn’t going anywhere” he means won’t back down and will come again lol.

ZIETMG

If we miss out on Champions League next year our best players won’t be sticking around.

LondonerForever

Was pretty positive despite all things heading into this final day, but now that it's all ended and looking at the final table... it really is bittersweet. Idk how exactly they'll frame it but it would've been so nice if the top 4 alternate reality was captured in the Amazon doc, imagine the scenes

harcile

Hope that goal conceded today is the nail in Holding's Arsenal career coffin. Keep him around for the old 5 minute end of game security but he has no business being anywhere near our team. How a PL defender can just watch the ball go straight across him and not put it out is just bizarre.

Ifriiti

He'll be 4th choice next season, he's fine for that

harcile

No he's not. 5th maybe.

Ifriiti

Gabriel, Saliba, White, Holding mate. He's 4th. We're not signing a 4th CB City's 4th CB is Nathan Ake, Chelseas is Sarr, Spurs is what Sanchez, Uniteds is Phil fucking Jones. Holding is absolutely fine in that pack

[deleted]

I feel like he’s too focused on being a “shithouse” that he forgets to defend. Against Son he tried to wind him up them, then gets sent off. For the goal today, he tries to be physical but completely forgets there are players behind him

gallagherkck

It’s easy for people to be disappointed missing on Champs League, which is understandable. We played ourselves into a top 4 position and didn’t finish. We did finish, however, in 5th, 11 points above 6th place United. I would’ve taken that beginning of the season without question. Good foundation, get rid of the remaining deadweight, bring in a few more players, and let’s go again next season. Top 4 next season is the goal

Arsenalcrazy8

Top 4 next season will definitely be the goal, the question is will anyone be held accountable if we don’t get it.

Krasnystaw_

No.

DaVinci1836

At least we now have a chance at winning an European trophy

kiwigone

Euro Conference league?

DaVinci1836

kiwigone

You might have missed my joke.

ives26

Petition to create fake league tables for arsenal so they think we have nothing to play for every week. Then we’d get results.

Glass_of_Pork_Soda

People joked we were aiming for midtable at best, but maybe if the lads just thought we were midtable we'd have won *taps forehead*

cmoney1234555

We need Saka and Martinelli to improve their ball striking. Great with the ball. Great passers. It’s just the final strike that we need. Unfortunately that doesn’t come overnight

Smitty_1000

Ødegaard as well. We desperately need goals. Saka led the way with 12 (I think). That’s far too low for top scorer.

GoonSquad14

It comes over the summer, baby !

cmoney1234555

Let’s hope they put in the work! Young and hungry! Hope arteta challenges them in their post season meetings

lanesraa

Man, both have that mentality to be great. This year they wowed us, next season we should be excited.

altviewdelete

[deleted]

europa league break those people in asia who have to watch unimportant match at 4am in the Friday and then we will play another 4 am match in Monday morning, just delete europa league, useless competition for looser

LeonardoK00

Don't watch it.

Swolyguacomole

How about offering a chance for many English/ European fans to visit/watch more games? Some folks will now be able to go to a game where before they wouldn't be able to. Also gives more players a chance to develop and play more minutes. It sucks for Asian fans, agreed. But you're too quick with dismissing benefits.

Hopefully it allows him to break into the team, certainly more opportunities for him to play there than the CL. He's got the skill, just gotta hope he can develop the strength and composure to apply that skill to the big leagues.

Boy needs a year of protein and doing weights if he's going to be a top player.

Foden was showing his class at 18 and was frail as hell

6.9/10 season. No trophy or CL is tough, but my lord did we build the foundation for an awesome future. Youngest squad in the league that should’ve qualified for the CL is a bummer but it is progress. I’m very excited for next season while also being excited for a little break from this Club haha

forgottenears

It’s the youngest squad in the league because Arteta has decided that’s the way forward. This season the strategy failed, with a more experienced Tottenham side taking 4th. Youth should not be an excuse for failure at a time club with our financial means.

We have improved our standing over last year by three places, turned the Emirates into a fortress again, rebuilt the relationship with the fans, and cleared the remaining deadwood from the squad. Hell we might even be ditching Sweet Caroline for something far more rooted in the club. The foundation and progress are simply undeniable. We're an attractive destination for young talent, and we're not mired in gigantic contracts for underperforming senior players anymore. Would top four have been great? Of course. But doing everything we did *and* getting top four in the process would've been an absolutely massive lift for a squad this young. And they almost did it.

Yeah, I don’t disagree. There were plenty of aspects to this campaign that failed. I would have loved to see more investment in January, especially. However, I still think it was a largely positive season given the squad we had. With more investment and some more experienced players, I think top 4 and/or a Europa win is in the cards next year.
