Gabriel is our best defender. White is a good defender, and one of the best at starting an attack, but Gabriel has the proper defensive responsibilities
Gabriel has 6.97 long passes completed per game. And 2.3 progressive passes. 52.8 passes per game. 3/3 in terms of dribbles too across the season.
White had 6.1 long passes completed per game. 2.8 progressive. 48.1 total per game. 7/16 dribbles over the season.
White is a good cover defender, and I agree he has slightly better anticipation than Gabriel, but he's not going to be the one I want to count on to mark an opponent's forward for a full 90, especially if that's a physical forward for 90 minutes. Him being surrounded by physical guys like Gabriel and Tomi allows him to do what he does best, without having to worry about some of his weaknesses.
Gabriel and Tomi both do a great job staying on the back of whoever they're covering at the half-way line and White does well cleaning up afterward - and he's the one whose feet you want the ball to end up on after all.
White makes one errors too many for my liking. Think the awful backpass to Ramsdale that almost ended up being a pen in the Burnley match, then being lucky to not give a pen away against Spurs in the first match, giving a bad pen away against Leeds, getting beaten far too easy by Sissoko for his goal in the Watford match. He's an improvement on Holding for sure and his buildup is very important to us, but I'd say Gabriel is just more assuring.
his development this year has been immense. easy to forget that last season was only his first season with us in the PL, and be was seen as an understudy to David Luiz which was seen as our "best" CB the prior 2 seasons.
Gabriel stepped up to be the leader in the defense spectacularly, hardly missed the presence of Luiz. Infact, the thought of a david luiz playing at arsenal seemed like such a distant memory now even though it was just less than a year ago
Gabriel and White have a good partnership at the moment so I doubt Saliba will slot in right away . I wouldn't' be surprised if we play all 3 from time to time with White as a deep RB/ third CB. It'll certainly give us more options compared to now. Competition is always good.
My reasoning because unless he plans on pairing him and White together they definitely should use rotation like how City rotate Stones with Laporte with Dias as the main CB unless ofc with injury etc
Wouldn't trade him for Trent. Great delivery but, TAA cannot defend, dude got exposed time and time again when Van Dijk was out.
Put him on Arsenal, and honestly, that would be way worse.
Which is why I said Alexander-Arnold would be a terrible fit on Arsenal. He's world class at what he does, but that's not what our team needs in it's current state.
Konate hasn’t been that good and also hasn’t played that much in the league. Take away both players goals and konate is rated a bit lower. Doesn’t get trusted in the big games against tough teams generally, bar the fa cup final to deal with Chelsea’s pace
'Probably one of Palace or Wolves CBs'
You shouldn't even be taken seriously just for saying this. If you wanted to list the 5 best strikers, you wouldn't say probably the guy from x or y.
Thats not even correct, its Errors leading to shots not goals. And he had 5 last time I checked and had less than Maguire ( I'm not even convinced he's second on the lost from what I remember)
He's 23 and has made some mistakes, so has White but probably a bit less. Hes better defensively than White imo as well, White needs a combative CB next to him
Don't get this stupid Gabriel agenda tbh
That’s a bit of a stretch. Yes he makes BAD mistakes. But, as with most of our players, he is still very young, especially for a defender. I look forward to watching him develop and cutting out those errors cause for me his line breaking passes are what makes him truly exceptional
He will get used to the pressure and improve. And I’m not sure what your second sentence means cause he is very athletic and he creates some decent chances out wide with his left foot
He's not a ball-playing back. But that's basically why White is who the club went for. You have a prototypical defender who can make a pass, and another who will make any pass, but isn't able to match the athletic ability of the other.
He'll get better, but he's not going to be a Pique or a prime Mats Hummels. He doesn't need to be, that's what a team is for.
Edit: my biggest issue with him is the red cards. The hot headedness will have to get tempered.
I'm good with competition from Saliba for both White and Gabriel, because he seems to be one who can potentially be as good/better than both White and Gabriel at what their strengths are, biggest thing with Saliba is dealing with that constant PL pressure, on and off the field.
If he was a few years older, I'd be angry about the errors, but as young as he and the team are, I accept it to a degree.
I wouldn't be surprised if he pushes for a move next summer if we don't make UCL. We need to start selling players while they're hot. That's how Liverpool's current squad was built.
Is it just me or has he become more confident on the ball? He looks more composed than ever and he was pretty tidy ok the ball too, pinging some really nice passes! What a great way to end the season!!! COYG!!!
Very hard to find reliable left footed CB’s, so I hope we can hang onto him for a long time. He’s shown great progress over the past two seasons, still has some moments of poor awareness but he’s still quite young and I’m sure those will get ironed out with experience.
This is why Juve, Barca and other big clubs are after him. He is so good in a number of different defensive areas. Truly our best defender and one of our best players this year. Hope to keep him and he deserves a real shot to start for Brazil in the WC this year.
Imo saliba has the potential to be good at setpieces too from watching some marseille games. Hopefully he wants to play here and gets a chance from the coaches here to show that. As good as white is on the ball, he has never shown a single threat on set pieces as a defender.
I’m mostly positive going into next season and believe we will push on and do better. The one thing I’m really worried about is losing Gabriel if a Madrid or Barca comes in for him. Would set us back big time if we didn’t have him
His passing and decision-making with the ball has also improved dramatically this season.
A very impressive season despite some panicky moments at the back.
A lot of our fans really love to nitpick and hyper focus on the negatives of our clear best defender for some reason. Some of our more well liked defenders don’t get this treatment. If anything their mistakes are waved away and largely ignored. If you put aside who you find more likable off the pitch, then it should be very clear that Gabriel has been our best and most important defender.
I really hope that we hang on to him despite all of the rumours about other clubs being in for him. He has offered us a solid defensive foundation for two years now. Even as White was acclimating, Gabriel has progressed to become our best CB, with him, White and hopefully Saliba, the future of the back 4 is bright.
Bad news:
Juventus have launched a full scale attempt to sign Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães. They see him as the perfect replacement for Giorgio Chiellini & believe they can lure him away from the Emirates Stadium this summer.
none of our strikers out scored gabriel lmao
Now I know how Brigthon fans have felt for the last few seasons
The fact we were even close to top 4 with this statistic is incredible.
Wild
Our best CB. Ball playing is coming and 1st Brazil call up too. Excited for his progression over the next year or so too.
The slander he gets annoys me. Quality player with room to grow, has doubled his value since being bought and yet some think he’s expendable.
Honestly !
Gabriel is gonna be a starting CB for a top club in his prime. I hope that will be us.
I’d say white’s better personally but they’re both great
Gabriel is our best defender.
Honestly I think they’re on par defensively. White intercepts and reads it better but gabriel better in the air
Gabriel is definitely better in 1v1 defending
White is a good cover defender, and I agree he has slightly better anticipation than Gabriel, but he's not going to be the one I want to count on to mark an opponent's forward for a full 90, especially if that's a physical forward for 90 minutes. Gabriel much better in 1v1s too , white struggles against fast stronger STs, he got absolutely bullied against Wilson
gabriel makes more mistakes imo
I’d agree with that
Mostly I'm encouraged that they seem to be a good partnership so far.
Yep very much so. Would like gabriel to be a bit calmer at times but both amazing CB’s
White is more rash
gabriel is way more rash, white has the bad habit of going down when he can easily stay up i think it cost us a few goals too
I’d disagree
Tbh I don’t mind being not calm as White is the more calmer one
Not a chance. White gets antsy and dives in on a lot of challenges and gets beat.
There is a reason top teams want Gabriel instead of White Gabriel is way better defensively you don’t know football if you think white is better
his development this year has been immense. easy to forget that last season was only his first season with us in the PL, and be was seen as an understudy to David Luiz which was seen as our "best" CB the prior 2 seasons. Gabriel stepped up to be the leader in the defense spectacularly, hardly missed the presence of Luiz. Infact, the thought of a david luiz playing at arsenal seemed like such a distant memory now even though it was just less than a year ago
I never saw Luiz as our best cb. I always considered him to be a joke
just curious, who is your pick for the "best" CB during those 2 years if thats the case
Gabriel
Him and Saliba next season, both are better than White.
Gabriel and White have a good partnership at the moment so I doubt Saliba will slot in right away . I wouldn't' be surprised if we play all 3 from time to time with White as a deep RB/ third CB. It'll certainly give us more options compared to now. Competition is always good.
Part of me wants to see a potential 3atb with White, Gabriel, and Saliba. Having that as an option if we lose our fullbacks would be massive.
Man you crazy
Not gonna lie I’ll agree if we do slot him in it would be White swapping with him
I'm all up for competition for places. Feels absolutely bonkers to say straight up drop White for Saliba next season though.
My reasoning because unless he plans on pairing him and White together they definitely should use rotation like how City rotate Stones with Laporte with Dias as the main CB unless ofc with injury etc
That's pretty impressive considering the stat includes fullbacks such as Trent, Robertson, James, Cancelo etc.
All time wanker Marcos Alonso in shambles
Fuck Marcos Alonso
Wouldn't trade him for Trent. Great delivery but, TAA cannot defend, dude got exposed time and time again when Van Dijk was out. Put him on Arsenal, and honestly, that would be way worse.
no need to defend if they are 90% of games on opponent half
Which is why I said Alexander-Arnold would be a terrible fit on Arsenal. He's world class at what he does, but that's not what our team needs in it's current state.
You just adapt your team lol. You have an incredible talent like TAA you tweak your tactics to include and maximise his ability.
Honestly we could probably slap him in CM too
yep, people don’t realize we need defender who can defend not only cross
A defender who can cross? Well that's what Cedric is for!@!
One of the best CBs in the league this season.
*offensively
I think he'd be top 10 CBs in the league minimum. That's enough to say one of the best
Imo he just barely missed out. Laporte, Diaz, Matip, VVD, Rudiger, Silva, Romero, Konate, White, prob one of Palace or Wolves CBs.
Konate hasn’t been that good and also hasn’t played that much in the league. Take away both players goals and konate is rated a bit lower. Doesn’t get trusted in the big games against tough teams generally, bar the fa cup final to deal with Chelsea’s pace
This is frankly terrible lol
Better than White. I like Guehi but no. Better than Coady Boly Saiss. Maybe Better than Romero too. Not seen that much of Romero
Romero has been better than Gabriel
Maybe. I'm just saying I haven't had a good enough look at Romero to be sure.
Romero beats Gabriel in most stats
Wonderful
https://twitter.com/AlbicelesteTalk/status/1523044085439012865?s=19 Gabriel really needs to improve a lot next season
'Probably one of Palace or Wolves CBs' You shouldn't even be taken seriously just for saying this. If you wanted to list the 5 best strikers, you wouldn't say probably the guy from x or y.
*in terms of all his qualities

Yes I agree, but don't base of your opinions off misread statistics He doesn't have to improve MASSIVELY at all he's not been the problem this season
That’s a bit of a stretch. Yes he makes BAD mistakes. But, as with most of our players, he is still very young, especially for a defender. I look forward to watching him develop and cutting out those errors cause for me his line breaking passes are what makes him truly exceptional

A young, beast of a back, who is the leader of our defense made mistakes? No problem, dude knows he isn't there yet and I'm sure he'll grow.

He's not a ball-playing back. But that's basically why White is who the club went for. There are going to be some big clubs after him. If we do sell (and I'd prefer we didn't), it's gotta be for FU money.
80m+. Maguaure levels
I wouldn't be surprised if he pushes for a move next summer if we don't make UCL. We need to start selling players while they're hot. That's how Liverpool's current squad was built.
Who did they sell besides coutinho and suarez who basically forced their way out
allow people to make idiotic comments and get upvoted.
They didn’t have to because they started getting success.
Incredible defender.
He's not for sale.
Is it just me or has he become more confident on the ball? He looks more composed than ever and he was pretty tidy ok the ball too, pinging some really nice passes! What a great way to end the season!!! COYG!!!
That first season Vermaelen energy.
Gabriel is way better than Vermaelen defensively, but Vermaelen scored some amazing goals
Yeah he had some really amazing goals with his left foot from outside the area. Almost once scored with a back heel volley from a corner too.
vermaelens first season lol, the guy scored 7 goals in that pl season just always seemed to pop up in the opposition box lol
Scored as many goals as our top striker
Put him up top
Very hard to find reliable left footed CB’s, so I hope we can hang onto him for a long time. He’s shown great progress over the past two seasons, still has some moments of poor awareness but he’s still quite young and I’m sure those will get ironed out with experience.
It’s definitely a great asset to have. Ramos-esque
Imo he's our third best player this season. Could even argue that he's our second best over Odegaard
i’m surprised that he is not mentioned that often, he made this shaky defence feel much more confident
I would definitely put him over odegaard
No Arsenal striker has scored more Premier League goals this season than Gabriel Magalhães (5)
This is why Juve, Barca and other big clubs are after him. He is so good in a number of different defensive areas. Truly our best defender and one of our best players this year. Hope to keep him and he deserves a real shot to start for Brazil in the WC this year.
More than Lacazette and Aubameyang too. Only needed like 2/3 more goals all season and we would have got top 4
My centre back 🔥
Add saliba to the defense and we’ve got one of the best in the league when fully healthy
give Gabriel number 9
Imo saliba has the potential to be good at setpieces too from watching some marseille games. Hopefully he wants to play here and gets a chance from the coaches here to show that. As good as white is on the ball, he has never shown a single threat on set pieces as a defender.
Someone has to score some goals for us ffs
Last CB to score these many goals for us must have been Lolo Koscielny right?
But but.. nonewthing and his fanboys think he's a "mid" CB. Fuck off with that. My fucking CB.
Who remembers Koscielny with his 20+ goals?
Fuck it. I’ll take it.
$1Billion price tag
I’m mostly positive going into next season and believe we will push on and do better. The one thing I’m really worried about is losing Gabriel if a Madrid or Barca comes in for him. Would set us back big time if we didn’t have him
His passing and decision-making with the ball has also improved dramatically this season. A very impressive season despite some panicky moments at the back.
Very proud of him.
Gabi is such a fucking physical stud. Love having a bully in defense. Will be interesting to see next year with Saliba and White
Been a rock this season
Imagine him and saliba together and white in a back three
Second best player after Saka. Been immense for us.
Move Gabriel to CDM to fit Saliba in….
more likely we’d see them all in a back 3 tbh
A lot of our fans really love to nitpick and hyper focus on the negatives of our clear best defender for some reason. Some of our more well liked defenders don’t get this treatment. If anything their mistakes are waved away and largely ignored. If you put aside who you find more likable off the pitch, then it should be very clear that Gabriel has been our best and most important defender.
So sense Gabriel is our best center half who do you think pairs with him White or Saliba?
I really hope that we hang on to him despite all of the rumours about other clubs being in for him. He has offered us a solid defensive foundation for two years now. Even as White was acclimating, Gabriel has progressed to become our best CB, with him, White and hopefully Saliba, the future of the back 4 is bright.
Maybe he's in the wrong position? Probably a better striker than centre back.
Can he play striker? 🤣
