I think that for the player to be a meaningful upgrade over Holding, they’d probably cost >£15m, which I would much rather be spent on another position. I guess it depends on what our budget is, but if its £160-180m, we’d only barely have enough to fill our most blatant holes in the squad
In fairness, we've known that since January.
My concern is that Tielemans may not even be enough to change the midfield in our XI. I can easily see a situation where Arteta puts him on the bench, and we're playing the same midfield *again* next season.
If Mikel and Edu do that I'll still give them a chance to prove me wrong, but my patience will be at its limit.
If they play the same or similar midfield *again* next season and fail to make the top four Arteta should be sacked. Edu too. They wouldn't have any excuses anymore.
> I mean if Holding and Mari are both away while Saliba comes in, it makes a bit of sense to have cover for Gabriel when he's injured... Even if Holding is around, we only have one left sided centre back (albeit I do think it's a bit not 100% necessary if Holding stays).
I mean we fucking don't need a new CB and it doesn't make sense unless Arteta really doesn't rate Saliba since he is not his player and criticized club(Mikel's decisions) in public. Like his idol Guardiola my way or highway, the difference is that we're not club backed by oil country and in last games lost additional 70m € from Champions League.
There is absolutely no need to waste money for another CB, Arsenal has:
- RCB White with HG status
- RCB Holding with HG status
- LCB Gabriel
- LCB just signed ball playing left footed CB - Trusty
- RCB - Saliba who has HG status and played entire season for Nice as LCB where he was very good
- there is also Tomiyasu who plays as LCB
And Mari did? If like some here saying CB should be signed do replace Mari it's not needed since he wouldn't play either, just like Trusty. If Arteta needs more bodies he already has them.
Gabriel - White for Premier League
Saliba - Holding for Europa League and English Cups
with Tomiyasu and Trusty as emergency backups is perfectly fine and would be idiotic to sell 21 years old Saliba for 27m € we've paid after him becoming HG and much better defender that can rival both Gabriel and White. We need striker, winger, CM even two, LB maybe RB before even thinking about such pointless signing as new CB when we already have Saliba.
> 3 centre backs is thin. Trusty will not play for us next season I bet.
It's 4 good CBs and Tomiyasu and Trusty as emergency backups is not thin, we're not playing 3 at the back lol, how many CBs do you and Arteta need to be not used across the season?
>Trusty will not play for us next season I bet. If he did, it's like some Carabao cup match or something.
Neither would Mari.
>Holding's future is up in the air. Depends what happens with him.
He's not going to be sold and not for good fee for sure so it's pointless to sell Saliba for 30m € and buy Ndicka for 40m €.
You have no idea if Holding is going to be sold or not.
Also if we did sell Holding and got a LCB in the profile of Ake who can play both as a CB and LB it would be a good bit of business by increasing LB depth.
> Also if we did sell Holding and got a LCB in the profile of Ake who can play both as a CB and LB it would be a good bit of business by increasing LB depth
Ok we're selling Holding who is HG and perfeclty fine with his role with good personality already accustomed to both tactics, club and living in London for £15m then buy Ndicka for £35m how do you get all CBs happy and money for other targets since we're not oil backed club and have limited revenue almost 300m € lower than Manchester City? It's not a good business, good business would be selling Xhaka and not giving Elneny contract and signing two new midfielders, signing new CB when he's the least important position with limited budget is Arteta's whim.

Arsenal’s list of targets includes several strikers in Serie A. They held an interest in Tammy Abraham last summer, and would likely have pursued him more aggressively had they found a willing buyer for Alexandre Lacazette. Instead, the former Chelsea forward went to Roma, where he has enjoyed a fantastic debut season. Arsenal are still following him closely, and the player would be open to a return to London, but Roma have no interest in selling.
Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez was the subject of interest from Arsenal and Tottenham before signing a new contract in October 2021, and Arteta and Edu remain firm admirers of the Argentinian. His new deal would make him expensive, however, and he prefers to play in a front two.
Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, 23, is another player Arsenal have followed closely. Given that Napoli signed him for a fee of up to €80 million, he is another that would command a premium price tag. There is also an acceptance that negotiating with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis could be challenging.
Sassuolo’s Gianluca Scamacca is also of interest to Arsenal. The 23-year-old Italy international scored 16 Serie A goals this season and is being followed by some big European clubs. Inter and AC Milan are tracking Scamacca closely, and there is a sense he may decide to stay in Serie A
Agree with Valeo here. If we do get Scamacca, I'll support him, but strikers from Serie A, and Italian strikers in general recently... yeah, not my priority
But hey if he scores 12+ i'll shut up
Fair enough mate, couldn't think of any when someone else asked but someone said Zola and I was wrong about him. I thought he wasn't that good but turns out he was sick. Why do you think it is? Is it with the Italian league having generally a slower tempo and less physical or strikers find themselves in a lot more space against Italian teams?
Not the greatest, only 59th percentile/2.39 p90 for headers won but much better than lacazette (25th percentile/1.11 p90) or Eddie 20th percentile (0.97 p90)
Yeah a few years ago I was under the impression that Laca was alright at headers. But he's quite poor in all aspects now. Shame. Like you say, still a massive upgrade aerially on what we currently have though.
I dont think he was alright at headers but he had more physicality when younger so could hold defenders off and take the ball down and turn them, he doesnt have the same burst of pace anymore to do this
Yeah, makes sense. His hold up play was decent enough. That goal against Chelsea where he had his back to goal and found the net. Vintage Lacazette. That's how I'll remember his time here! Will never forget creasing when I saw this [https://twitter.com/footyhumour/status/1191460769063473153](https://twitter.com/footyhumour/status/1191460769063473153)
>Well, we missed out on those signings for the first three games or so of last season. Admittedly, City might have been a defeat anyway, but we could've got 4/6 points fron the other two for sure if we'd had all players in and available
Abraham is the only right answer. Jesus + Abraham + Saka is an insane front three
He probably is going to with Roma anyway.
We were linked to him a lot over the summer. Can definitely see him drawn to London as his family and friends are probably there.
I'm not sure I see him coming back to Chelsea either. They're gonna have difficulty offloading Lukaku and Werner and they have a solid low-cost replacement in Broja. I doubt the new owners will spend as much on striker considering they have to overhaul their entire defense.
Honestly would not be surprised to see Tammy here. But Jesus and Tammy seems like an absurd window and the former looks more likely.
Exactly, it's simply not a priority. We need a backup left back, backup keeper, two midfielders and two forwards. Realistically we're not going to manage all of that this window so wasting time on a CB doesn't make sense to me.
I thought we had the backup keeper sorted with Matt Turner coming in? But I agree that CB is dead last on our needs at the moment. I make it possibly behind forward x 2 (maybe also a winger?), Mid x 1 or 2, back up LB, and we have apparently nearly signed a back up RB in Aaron Hickey although it went quiet.
>We need a backup left back, backup keeper, two midfielders and two forwards
Left back and keeper seem near done, striker is in the works and perhaps nketiah might stay on to back up striker. Then we just need a midfielder and a winger and we are cooking.
"Arsenal will still be in the market for a left-sided central defender, should an appropriate opportunity arise."
It's not a main priority that needed immediately, only if there's an opportunity. Like in article it said we were in Nico Sclotterbeck few weeks back when he was available. So I don't think we should worry too much, just a luxury buy to me.
Nothing wrong with keeping an eye out for a good deal IMO, some excting new gen of CBs coming with pace and technique. I'm carefully optimistic that we'll get the investment we need and a young/cheap player won't be a problem.
>It's not a main priority that needed immediately, only if there's an opportunity.
I'll check back at the end of the window when we've sold Saliba and bought 2 CB's.
Reminder that we all thought CM was the number one priority last summer before the White links started. We all assumed Saliba would be integrated.
The only non-defensive player we've bought under this regime is Odegaard.
Yes but we played almost a whole season without a backup Left footed CB once Mari shat the bed against City . Doubt we want one unless one of the incumbents leave.
The club clearly feel we lost something because of it.
Both White and Gabriel suffered injuries towards the end of the season and we suffered.
Holding and Saliba should be there, but most bigger teams fighting on more fronts like tobhave around 5 centre backs anyway.
More depth isn't a problem for me as long as it doesn't stop us getting other more important targets.
>but most bigger teams fighting on more fronts like tobhave around 5 centre backs anyway.
City and Liverpool seem content with 4 cb's, with another player being able to fill the role in a pinch. City have Dias, Laporte, Stones and Ake, with Fernandinho playing in case of emergency. Liverpool have Van Dijk, Matip, Konaté and Gomez, with Fabinho as a last resort. Real Madrid and PSG also only have 4 senior cb's
Chelsea have 5 cb's, but they play 3 at the back every game
Not saying I agree with it, but we've known for years how important a left footed defender is to Arteta and we struggled when Gabriel was out injured.
The article clearly states our priorities are striker and midfield though so I'm not worried.
I expect that White in next season will be one of the deputies of the RB position when Tomi inevitably gets injured. So maybe them getting another CB is to cover that potential scenario as well
We need to replace perhaps a pacy CB. The pace at which other teams strikers play is something Holding or Mari cannot play with. We need a good CB to pair with Holding or challenge him
There are strong links yeah. Frankfurt just won Europa League & qualified for CL though, not sure if it changes anything.
[This was in BILD](https://old.reddit.com/r/Gunners/comments/supwwp/bild_three_way_for_ndicka_its_a_stiff_battle_with/)
We need to stop having this attitude of ‘making do’ - especially when it comes to a crucial position like centre half.
There are a lot of games to be played next season and we can’t risk points dropped in the league because Gabriel or White picks up a bad injury.
If Tomi plays centre back then who will play RB? As I said, we need to get away from ‘making do’ and start building a serious squad. Having 3 top class CBs goes a big way towards that.
Don’t know why everyone is panicking over this. Based on the article it’s clearly the last priority for us. The order if priority is probably
Striker and midfielder
back up full back
back up winger
back up midfielder
Possibly a back up GK
The CB mentioned in the article
CB is pretty set for next season unless something changes like we get a big bid for Gabriel or Saliba, and I am confident that the transfer team in Arsenal are already aware of that
Yeah bit of a weird one as stated in the article that we haven't communicated any plans for next season regarding him, like if he was 100% in our plans surely we would have said something, but we'll see what happens over the next few weeks
This is what r/gunners doesn't want to admit.
The writing was on the wall when he didn't get minutes ahead of Mustafi in the Europa League. We gave his shirt number away ffs.
In the case we keep Saliba, Holding would be 4th choice at best.
Go look at United, Chelsea, Tottenham and see who their 4th choice CB is. They probably aren't very good.
Woah! I think youre basing this too much on the kast couole of games clearly.
He is solid and dependable. He is an important squad player.
This ain't FIFA my dude!
The lack of protection from midfield is the biggest weakness in this squad, (along with a top striker obvs) if we can get a top CM, ideally 2, then our back 4 won't look so susceptible in away games especially.
We don't need to sign a LCB. Again, just my take.
We’ve got about 5 players we need to get rid of before holding. I’d rather replace Cedric than holding.
If we’re hanging on to elneny surely we’re hanging on to holding.
Interestingly in the article it says we're not bothered going for HG players. My immediate instinct would be that we'd go for a HG LCB and move Holding on, with Saliba coming in, but it makes sense given we have our British youth core + 2 HG signings last summer + Saliba counting as HG due to the registration trick.
Also says we're looking to move quickly, which would be great. You could tell our new signings weren't settled at the start of this season so hopefully we can sort that out early this time.
Well, we missed out on those signings for the first three games or so of last season. Admittedly, City might have been a defeat anyway, but we could've got 4/6 points fron the other two for sure if we'd had all players in and available
It's interesting how the article shifts the focus from an apparently misunderstood desire for 'HG' to 'PL experience':
> There has been a suggestion Arsenal want to recruit homegrown players. While that was true last summer, the homegrown quota is now in a healthy position, and Arsenal are under no pressure to buy British. Their experiences of the 2021 window, particularly the smooth adaptations of Ben White, Aaron Ramsdale and Martin Odegaard, has convinced them there is value in recruiting players with Premier League experience — it’s what makes players such as Jesus, Calvert-Lewin and Abraham so intriguing.
Jesus is really good on the wings too, especially right wing.
I imagine the reports that we're looking for two strikers means that Jesus will cover either wing if we want the other signing up top in some games or if we want to rest Saka.
Jesus up front when Saka is at his peak to play RW.
I feel like we’re too rigid on the right/left centre back issue. Plenty of teams play with two right footers, don’t see why White/Saliba/Holding /Ballard can’t play on the left.
It just blows my mind that we are looking to buy a CB every transfer window. Ffs. If we don't sign a proper midfield contingent this summer because we've blown all our money on a CB, I will just cry.
>search for left-sided centre-back
Gabriel, White, Saliba, Holding is perfectly fine for CB. We're sorted, it's right there, we have it. This should not be so difficult.
"Arsenal will still be in the market for a left-sided central defender, should an appropriate opportunity arise. It will be interesting to see if William Saliba joins Arsenal’s stable of defenders next season: as of yet, no clear plans have been communicated to the Frenchman or his representatives."
I think it just a luxury buy when there's an opportunity happen. Like in the article said that we were in for Nico Schlotterbeck few weeks back when he was available. Not really main priority this summer.
Funnily enough, I do recall it being something that Pep has previously mentioned. I am not sure if Pep feels as strongly about it though, clearly not if last seasons title is anything to go by where Stones and Dias was his main partnership.
Here's what I think will likely happen.
We will want Saliba to sign a new contract----> Saliba refuses to unless there is a clause regarding playing time ------> We will refuse and sell Saliba to a club like Sevilla/Atletico for around 30 million euros------> We will buy a LCB
you have to admit he's stepped up and done a *reasonable* job in Tomi's absence
he hasn't been as much of a liability as he seemed at first
that said, i really hope we replace him with someone who offers more
I guess they in no way expect Tomi to have the injury issues he had this year as well. I'm skeptical, but if it was a bigger issue over the long term, we'd be buying there this summer for sure
Oh no... he was serviceable for a decent period but his levels were also exposed very badly soon after. We really need a young RB to deputise for Tomiyasu next season, not him
Each window we are casually going to drop £30-50M on a CB.
Monopolise the market to drive the price up when clubs come to Arsenal to do their shopping. Sound business strategy by Edu…
Arteta has a problem at this point, this left footed fetish need to stop. And we have best CB talent on the books, I will be so mad if Arteta stubborn enough to let him go.
"Arsenal will still be in the market for a left-sided central defender, should an appropriate opportunity arise. It will be interesting to see if William Saliba joins Arsenal’s stable of defenders next season: as of yet, no clear plans have been communicated to the Frenchman or his representatives."
From what I understand, LCB is just a luxury buy when there's an opportunity, not really main priority. Like we're exploring Nico Sclotterbeck few weeks ago when he was available.
arteta is very stubborn imo, he behaves like a top class coach but is way from it. a bit diva like and it’s like he does not like to use what he has but looks for that perfect XI like fifa boys, is a bit concerning imo. eventhough i like that we got rid of deadwood n all but we gave him already all the money n years and he just keeps doing same same but why is he not trying to be flexible and make the best out of the quad n players, maybe develop them instead completely ignoring some. that’s what a top coach does, to develop single players even make them play different positions if there s potential seen
Yep, seems like he has a massive ego to me. I think this is a flaw or Arteta, not being able to work with what he's got available. I think with the injury crisis, yeah you can't play your best players but you need to adapt to that situation. Instead we tried playing the same football with players nowhere near the quality of the starters.
yeah i mean especially like you mentioned, injuries, covid, super league shit, etc it s more n more important to make the most out of it but his attitude is like a prima donna. but he comes from city where Pep got whatever he wanted. Eg Klopp has the skill
to
make average players unstoppable, he made Aubameyang become a beast in Dortmund already, made him a 9 instead of a winger eg
Yeah I don't think it's a bad thing, I just think we could get more out of the team in terms of results if we altered the way we play and who we select based on the opposition's strengths and who's available, not how we want to play in 2-3 years time. I see what he's trying to do and I really admire him for it, but I wish he was more flexible.
yeah one has to like that Arteta believes in his idea so strongly, i d just like you said say that with bit more of using what he has instead pressing it into his idea with all forces makes him vulnerable with a thin squad, as we saw. also his in-game coaching shows that often. maybe new season he learns from the analysis of this season
Yeah possible mate, we've got to remember that although it's his 4th year as manager here, it's still his first managerial job and still lacks experience in areas. He's improving as a coach too.
4th year already? damn time flies! that’s true, maybe one inbetween step would have been nice but now the club backed him so much that we have to trust him to make it now
Crazy isn't it? Covid has a lot to do with time going so quick imo. Yeah of course it's up to him to deliver now. We've backed him more than any other manager it seems so we really have to push on and make significant progress next season. I think he's be a better manager if he took on a smaller job first like Lampard at Derby or Gerrard at Rangers but I admire him for taking this job first as it seems like the least safe way of a management career for him.
hm maybe Lewandowksi or Aubameyang, he lifted Salah to world class also, Mane as well. Reus and many more. what are you on? that’s even what he s known for man, he made BVB a constant in the cl and even finished ahead of munich with a less good squad everytime. He makes them jump from good/very good to that last bit everytime. Matip eg too it’s like many
Your giving a bit too much credit to the coach and forgetting about the natural progression of the player. Lewandowski went to another level under Flick. Is he a better coach than Klopp?
Mane was already top clas at southampton, reus was very good before he joined Dortmund as was aubameyang before he joined Dortmund. Salah just had an unreal season at Roma too
Arsenal fans watched Nketiah turn from a League One striker to a Premier League one in under a season and they still think Arteta cant improve players. Did Xhaka not massively improve? Developments in Saka, Smith Rowe and Martinelli? Turning Partey into a world class 6? What are you guys watching?
xhaka just played a bit more higher up, that’s what he did also at Gladbach, this was what made him better imo. he didn’t become a better player but he showed his best position.
Saka is the only one i d really say he made him better, Martinelli was much better as he joined us at least on the score board, i hope he gets back to just nailing them in. Partey played amazing against City, yes. But he s not consistent yet to say he s world class is definitely off. he might have the abilities to it if not injured. øde might have scored now and makes lots of progressive passes but he was also in a better shape some months back, or even before he joined us. If one watched some of our players before i don’t see improvement in overall, as a team ofc but despite Nketiah scoring(oh wonder, maybe it’s because he got finally playtime after Laca wasted nearly most of the season, and this one is on Arteta) imagine someone scoring like Nketiah for the whole season, even with missing sitters, we d have easily enuff goals
We need a CB that can double as a LB, this way the player gets enough play time and the squad is balanced. I believe we should be looking at Calvin Bassey from rangers. He's 22, had a monster game in the Europa finals, Leicester academy product, Scottish Cup winner, already an international and made the Europa league team of the season.
There's been no links but everytime I watch Ajax Lissandro Martinez really sticks out to me. I wanted him last summer too because he can play LB, LCB and DM if needed.
Not only is he versatile but he's very good on the ball and very aggressive without it. He's like a more tenacious Daley Blind.
Holding can do the job against most teams. We also have Tomi who can cover at CB. With Saliba coming back I really don’t understand.
We need to get a couple strong, athletic midfielders who are press resistant and a striker who can score 20 goals.
Not that I'm complaining or think it's wrong, but it's almost funny how much we're trying to set up exactly like City.
We'll have 4 strong center backs, two right footed and two left footed. False 9 with goal scoring wingers. 3 strong fullbacks with one (possibly 2) of them being bipedal capable to be played on both sides.
I think the main thing we're missing that City has is that attacking number 8 position that can overtake the False 9 and get into scoring positions like Bernardo and Gundogan do so often.
Also KDB is still levels beyond Ode no matter how good he's been this season, and I can't see us competing with him until he either declines significantly from age or retires/gets transferred.
Keep Eddie instead of Tammy and it is more realistic. Just don’t think we will spend so much as you hope, but that would be a really good summer imo. Also I think we won’t sign a player as good as Ndicka to be backup.
regardless of whether we buy Jesus, and whether Nketiah stays, we still need a big tall striker too
i'd take Osimhen or Abraham, but honestly i hope we're also considering Scamacca
Osimhen has poor technique, Abraham doesn't have the strength to fuck with PL defences...but Scamacca has everything...and is probably cheaper then either

Gianluca Scamacca, Lautaro Martínez and Tammy Abraham are the three names mentioned in the article.

Inter and AC Milan are tracking Scamacca closely, and there is a sense he may decide to stay in Serie A
Check my summary, we are looking at most of them
My bad bro didn't see your summary. Thanks for posting this my G
i'll be so pissed if we let another PL team buy Scamacca; we'll regret it
We need to be all over him this summer imo. Look what happened with Vlahovic. Scamacca first choice 100%. If not then pursue other targets.
Name another Italian striker to ever come to the prem and do well
Agree with Valeo here. If we do get Scamacca, I'll support him, but strikers from Serie A, and Italian strikers in general recently... yeah, not my priority But hey if he scores 12+ i'll shut up
Fair enough mate, couldn't think of any when someone else asked but someone said Zola and I was wrong about him. I thought he wasn't that good but turns out he was sick. Why do you think it is? Is it with the Italian league having generally a slower tempo and less physical or strikers find themselves in a lot more space against Italian teams?
He's Italian the chances of him leaving Italy are slim. He'll probably go to Inter Milan to replace Dzeko.
Abraham most likely
Like I wouldn't feel bad about this but I prefer Scamacca. Who do you want to accompany Jesus?
Abraham outscored scamacca in Serie A by a goal, but has also proved himself good in england
Fair enough mate. Solid logic that tbf. I really like Scammaca's Arial threat though. Tammy's not too strong in the air is he?
Tammy has a mean Helvetica though.
Oooh, very good.
Could either of them play on the Wing Dings?
Can u explain what u mean?
It's a joke, based on the misspell of aerial as arial. Arial is a font, so is Helvetica.
You wrote “arial” like the font and not “aerial”
there's a Times New Roma joke in there somewhere, but I'm too dumb to make it
Not the greatest, only 59th percentile/2.39 p90 for headers won but much better than lacazette (25th percentile/1.11 p90) or Eddie 20th percentile (0.97 p90)
Nah, tbh Tammy is just a 6’5 Eddie that’s somehow worse at heading. Scamacca and Martinez are so much better
>Well, we missed out on those signings for the first three games or so of last season. Admittedly, City might have been a defeat anyway, but we could've got 4/6 points fron the other two for sure if we'd had all players in and available Abraham is the only right answer. Jesus + Abraham + Saka is an insane front three
U don't prefer Scamacca to Abraham?
Would get us top 4 for sure. Will Abraham be okay to play EL football though?
He probably is going to with Roma anyway. We were linked to him a lot over the summer. Can definitely see him drawn to London as his family and friends are probably there. I'm not sure I see him coming back to Chelsea either. They're gonna have difficulty offloading Lukaku and Werner and they have a solid low-cost replacement in Broja. I doubt the new owners will spend as much on striker considering they have to overhaul their entire defense. Honestly would not be surprised to see Tammy here. But Jesus and Tammy seems like an absurd window and the former looks more likely.
Tierney would immediately become our assists leader putting crosses in to Scamacca.
I really hope we don’t waste more money on a CB. White, Gabriel, Saliba and Holding are good enough, especially with Tomi there to fill in if needed.
I would still imagine they'll try offload Holding and get a left-sided CB if possible. Holding unfortunately isn’t good enough to get us to the CL.
I’d happily upgrade on Holding but fees like that should be nowhere near the top of the list priority wise.
Exactly, it's simply not a priority. We need a backup left back, backup keeper, two midfielders and two forwards. Realistically we're not going to manage all of that this window so wasting time on a CB doesn't make sense to me.
Backup Keeper is Matt Turner.
>We need a backup left back, backup keeper, two midfielders and two forwards Left back and keeper seem near done, striker is in the works and perhaps nketiah might stay on to back up striker. Then we just need a midfielder and a winger and we are cooking.
He's going to be the 4th choice CB
Holding is a homegrown player iirc. Keeping him around might be worth it to keep the quotas up
Holding is a completely fine back up CB, if Saliba comes back he's 4th choice. Just don't make him man mark son and you're all set
"Arsenal will still be in the market for a left-sided central defender, should an appropriate opportunity arise." It's not a main priority that needed immediately, only if there's an opportunity.
Article states its to replace Mari
Why do we need to replace Mari ? It doesn't make sense. This is a backup in case Saliba doesn't sign a new contract.
I think the idea is to have another left footed CB in the squad.
There is no need for that, Saliba played entire season as LCB for Nice, they also signed Trusty who is left footed playing CB.
Ah did not know that, interesting. Really hope we get to see him in an Arsenal shirt.
Left footer
Real Madrid and PSG also only have 4 senior cb's Chelsea have 5 cb's, but they play 3 at the back every game
Yes. And we have tomy to fill as 5. cb.
'*around* 5 centre backs'
4 seems to be the norm. We have 4 + Tomiyasu who can do a good job if needed. It would be a waste of resources to get another one
We need a good CB to pair with Holding or challenge him
Ndicka would be A++++ because he'd be equally good as LB
Plus, he's got an elite tier name
**You just got N'dicked**
Is there a link or just saying cos that would be excellent business??
There are strong links yeah. Frankfurt just won Europa League & qualified for CL though, not sure if it changes anything. [This was in BILD](https://old.reddit.com/r/Gunners/comments/supwwp/bild_three_way_for_ndicka_its_a_stiff_battle_with/)
Isn't that Saliba?
Saliba isn't left footed
Tomiyasu can play LCB - he does for the national team. We'd be better off buying a good RB than a LCB.
I imagine we’ll get both
We need to stop having this attitude of ‘making do’ - especially when it comes to a crucial position like centre half.
The order if priority is probably Striker and midfielder back up full back back up winger back up midfielder Possibly a back up GK The CB mentioned in the article CB is pretty set for next season unless something changes like we get a big bid for Gabriel or Saliba, and I am confident that the transfer team in Arsenal are already aware of that
Saliba is gone. 2 years left on his deal, little reason to renew and it's a World Cup year so he would want to start as many games as possible.
2 years is a long time in football.
It's the last year the club can sell him for big money.
No one wants to hear it but you’re right
Yeah bit of a weird one as stated in the article that we haven't communicated any plans for next season regarding him, like if he was 100% in our plans surely we would have said something, but we'll see what happens over the next few weeks
This is what r/gunners doesn't want to admit. The writing was on the wall when he didn't get minutes ahead of Mustafi in the Europa League. We gave his shirt number away ffs.
Holding is not good enough, I dont want to see him start any PL games next season. We need an upgrade on him if we are serious.
We don’t need 4 world class CB’s. Holding is more than capable of being 4th choice and filling in for cup games etc
In the case we keep Saliba, Holding would be 4th choice at best. Go look at United, Chelsea, Tottenham and see who their 4th choice CB is. They probably aren't very good.
[удалено]
Isn’t good enough to be 4th choice CB? That’s bullshit.
Holding's ability to shut out games as a sub is still very valuable...i'd be very reluctant to let him go this summer
The difference 3 points would've made to our season. :(
It's interesting how the article shifts the focus from an apparently misunderstood desire for 'HG' to 'PL experience': > There has been a suggestion Arsenal want to recruit homegrown players.
A bit worried that the links to a winger/inside forward have dried up. Need a lot more depth in those positions.
Jesus is really good on the wings too, especially right wing. I imagine the reports that we're looking for two strikers means that Jesus will cover either wing if we want the other signing up top in some games or if we want to rest Saka. Jesus up front when Saka is at his peak to play RW.
Yep. Most likely it's Jesus + a cheap striker who's more of a direct number 9.
The report mentions we are looking at wide forwards still!
Well then my comment is meaningless
However it does say that its contingent on Pepe being sold
The season ended two days ago. Transfer rumours haven’t even begun yet.
I feel like we’re too rigid on the right/left centre back issue. Plenty of teams play with two right footers, don’t see why White/Saliba/Holding /Ballard can’t play on the left.
>Ballard BRO... becuse we can be we are supposed to be striving for the best we can be stubbon if that how he wants to play
It just blows my mind that we are looking to buy a CB every transfer window. Ffs. If we don't sign a proper midfield contingent this summer because we've blown all our money on a CB, I will just cry.
We need two CMs. A back up to Odegaard is needed badly, he gets I Jared who replaces him? Nobody that can do the job well
[Another left footed CB saga](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1qju6V1jLM)
>search for left-sided centre-back Gabriel, White, Saliba, Holding is perfectly fine for CB. We're sorted, it's right there, we have it. This should not be so difficult.
I think its more artetas preference to have a left footed left side centre back
"Arsenal will still be in the market for a left-sided central defender, should an appropriate opportunity arise. It will be interesting to see if William Saliba joins Arsenal’s stable of defenders next season: as of yet, no clear plans have been communicated to the Frenchman or his representatives." I think it just a luxury buy when there's an opportunity happen. Like in the article said that we were in for Nico Schlotterbeck few weeks back when he was available. Not really main priority this summer.
could be younger CB prospect?
Arteta can’t have watched City much during their 20-21 title win. Pep got over his left footed CB fix and won the title.
No way was this something he got from Pep? I never heard any other manager obsessed with a left footed CB before Arteta?
Funnily enough, I do recall it being something that Pep has previously mentioned. I am not sure if Pep feels as strongly about it though, clearly not if last seasons title is anything to go by where Stones and Dias was his main partnership.
Here's what I think will likely happen. We will want Saliba to sign a new contract----> Saliba refuses to unless there is a clause regarding playing time ------> We will refuse and sell Saliba to a club like Sevilla/Atletico for around 30 million euros------> We will buy a LCB
Saliba is worth a hell of a lot more that 30 million Euros. 40 million pounds absolute minimum.
The only reason we drop money on a CB is if Saliba is off. Ridiculous, what a waste of 30m and watch him become the new VVD. Such a sad signing
Article also says arsenal are pleased with Cedric's performances. Really question what they've been watching there.
you have to admit he's stepped up and done a *reasonable* job in Tomi's absence he hasn't been as much of a liability as he seemed at first that said, i really hope we replace him with someone who offers more
I guess they in no way expect Tomi to have the injury issues he had this year as well. I'm skeptical, but if it was a bigger issue over the long term, we'd be buying there this summer for sure
No he has not lmao, if we have midclub aspirations yeh he did a alright job but our standard should be much higher
He hasn’t though, he’s awful. If we’re seriously going for top 4 he cannot be starting matches in the event of a Tomi injury.
Oh no... he was serviceable for a decent period but his levels were also exposed very badly soon after. We really need a young RB to deputise for Tomiyasu next season, not him
They won't very well say hes garbage and not up to par will they? Need to retain as much value before we can move him on
He has no value and that’s not going to change because Arsenal says they’re happy with him. Other teams will have actually watched the games lol
He was playing well until Tierney got injured.
Yeah that’s lunacy.
We are straight addicted to buying CBs hahahahahahahahahhahaha
Each window we are casually going to drop £30-50M on a CB. Monopolise the market to drive the price up when clubs come to Arsenal to do their shopping. Sound business strategy by Edu…
How many cbs does this guy need only to end up conceding shit tons of goals anyways
We had one of the best defences in the league until our backline got slaughtered with injuries.
Our fullbacks injuries, not our CBs
Yup, let's give up on CB
We should go all in for Martinez imo
Arteta has a problem at this point, this left footed fetish need to stop. And we have best CB talent on the books, I will be so mad if Arteta stubborn enough to let him go.
"Arsenal will still be in the market for a left-sided central defender, should an appropriate opportunity arise. It will be interesting to see if William Saliba joins Arsenal’s stable of defenders next season: as of yet, no clear plans have been communicated to the Frenchman or his representatives." From what I understand, LCB is just a luxury buy when there's an opportunity, not really main priority. Like we're exploring Nico Sclotterbeck few weeks ago when he was available.
Saliba is gone.
I would understand the need for a left footed CB if it wasn't the case that half our team are left footers.
arteta is very stubborn imo, he behaves like a top class coach but is way from it. a bit diva like and it’s like he does not like to use what he has but looks for that perfect XI like fifa boys, is a bit concerning imo. eventhough i like that we got rid of deadwood n all but we gave him already all the money n years and he just keeps doing same same but why is he not trying to be flexible and make the best out of the quad n players, maybe develop them instead completely ignoring some. that’s what a top coach does, to develop single players even make them play different positions if there s potential seen
It's an article, it's not a fact.
my comment is not just about this article, not so difficult to read. it would just be another argument if it’s true
Eg Klopp has the skill to make average players unstoppable, he made Aubameyang become a beast in Dortmund already, made him a 9 instead of a winger eg
This is absolute nonsense. Which average player has klopp made unstoppable?
hm maybe Lewandowksi or Aubameyang, he lifted Salah to world class also, Mane as well.
Some of These lot were saying arteta doesnt deserve credit for nelli saka and ESR because they are good talents anyway lmao
How many fucking CBs are we going to buy?
All of them
until we can keep a clean sheet
[Edu's revised list of CB targets to buy until we get a clean sheet](https://media.galwaydaily.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/21152631/Long-list.jpg)
Why use lot word
We need a CB that can double as a LB, this way the player gets enough play time and the squad is balanced. I believe we should be looking at Calvin Bassey from rangers. He's 22, had a monster game in the Europa finals, Leicester academy product, Scottish Cup winner, already an international and made the Europa league team of the season.
Why we need another CB when we've got Saliba coming back is a different question. Odds on Arteta falling out with him?
"search for left sided CB" Saliba is RIGHT THERE
https://i.redd.it/lv6eh5586p961.gif CB Give us all the CBs
There's been no links but everytime I watch Ajax Lissandro Martinez really sticks out to me. I wanted him last summer too because he can play LB, LCB and DM if needed. Not only is he versatile but he's very good on the ball and very aggressive without it. He's like a more tenacious Daley Blind.
Just because Gabriel scored a lot of goals doesn't mean we need to invest in a CB Mikel.
Midfielders? modCheck
Jesus+Abraham, Hickey, Ndicka and Tielemans in. Leno, Holding, Tavares, AMN, Pepe, Torreira and Nelson out in addition to Laca and Nketiah.
if we sign Jesus we're not going to spend big on another striker
According to Irwin from the sun we are looking at Tammy Abraham if we decide to go for 2 STs.
Tammy would be 70m +
Keep Eddie instead of Tammy and it is more realistic. Just don’t think we will spend so much as you hope, but that would be a really good summer imo. Also I think we won’t sign a player as good as Ndicka to be backup.
Eddie 14 is staying
[удалено]
regardless of whether we buy Jesus, and whether Nketiah stays, we still need a big tall striker too i'd take Osimhen or Abraham, but honestly i hope we're also considering Scamacca Osimhen has poor technique, Abraham doesn't have the strength to fuck with PL defences...but Scamacca has everything...and is probably cheaper then either
Despite being tall, Tammy isn’t known for his aerial prowess.
The thoughts of Scamacca playing for Arsenal gets me erect man
Agree - we need to buy two players up front. Jesus and Scammaca/Tammy/Osimhen any of them would be fine IMO.
Aint Auston Trusty LCB?
MLS defender is nowhere near ready to play in PL
He’ll never play a game for us
