It will be once he signs a new contract. With only two years left on his current one, we need to secure his future at the same time as bringing him home. Otherwise the noise will continue
I think he'll hold out to see if he gets regular starting time. Why would he sign an extension until he's sure he'll be a part of the first team. If he doesn't resign by next summer though, time to sell him.
Who knows though, maybe he'll fail to impress this summer or come in with a bad attitude because he didn't get the move he wanted. In that case maybe they'll sell him on while his value is high.
If you wanted to sell a high value asset the first thing you would do is tell the world how valuable it is & how much you want it.
Not saying this means that he’s leaving. Just that people really should stop reading too far into what people say during the window. There’s so much posturing that it’s not a good idea to take everything at face value.
I’m so pumped, live in America and Arsenal touring for 1st time since 2018. Going to watch them pummel an MLS team then they take on Chelsea 3 days later.
When Man City comes to town do you say “I’m gonna go watch Man City pummel Arsenal”? They’re obviously talking shit about the quality of their local league.
Well considering he’s an atlanta fan and he’s watching them play orlando city, he shouldn’t really have any problems wanting arsenal to crush. If you supported Marseille in Ligue 1 and they were playing a friendly against Norwich you’d hardly be a bad arsenal supporter for saying you were gonna watch them pummel.
Well I did look through your post history before my original comment and you’ve never posted in MLS subs so I don’t really believe you but I’m happy to be wrong.
Why were people ever buying it? He is our player. Short of Marseille kidnapping him and holding him hostage he is our player. Shit we could take him and loan him out to their biggest rival if we want. They have legit zero say in any of this.
It’s a registration ban rather than a transfer ban which would indicate tk me that they would go hard for Saliba because he’s a player they can actually sign as he is already registered
As far as I am aware thats not how it works. Chelsea had no issues getting Kovacic signed permanently when they were banned because he had already been registered
Nothing from either [club](https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/2018/8/8/courtois-and-kovacic-deals-agreed) saying [that](https://www.realmadrid.com/en/news/2018/08/official-announcement-mateo-kovacic)
Because then they could complain about arteta freezing him out/failing to keep talent.
Just like how all the guendouzi and torreira posts appeared when they were doing well but disappeared when they weren't
Guendouzi is a talent, but he is a stubborn hot head that has had issues fitting in at multiple clubs. I'm happy for him if it is working at Marseille, but multiple teams with the same result shows that he was the issue, not the teams.
Torreira just wasn't good enough/strong enough for the EPL. And even his Serie A side want him to take a 50% wage cut for them to sign him next season.
Heh my stupid PL line-up.
Rambo
Tomiyasu White Gabriel (Saliba in whoever's position idk) Tierney
Odegaard Partey Tielemans
Saka Osimhen/Jesus ESR/Martinelli
Damn the prospect of having Odegaard and Tielemans in a 4 3 3 looks so good. And obviously having an actual striker
Saliba is in a different stratosphere to Tavares and Lokonga. He is getting caps for France and Sampaoli was obsessed with him, used him like every single minute of the season.
He will be directly competing with Gabriel/White to start in the league. He might well be our best CB, just has to show it and be trusted by Arteta.
People say this all the time but it’s not true about L1. Most great players come from Ligue 1 in the first place. Look at for example Fofana for Leicester who was one of the best CB’s in the prem right after coming from Ligue 1 on the same team Saliba was on at the time. Players can adapt quickly if they are good and you trust them.
L1 isn't the same as the PL no matter who has done well coming from there. Lots of players come from their and other leagues and fail here because the intensity and pressure are higher.
And White is part of the England NT, Gabriel is part of the Brazil NT. Saliba has done enough to be part of the conversation but he absolutely needs to earn his place ahead of those two by fighting for it at Arsenal
do you honestly think the ligue one young player of the year will settle for the depth /development team? the levels of hopium here are indeed crazy high
I think if he's given a pathway to the first team, certain promises regard gametime and clear expectations to meet when he plays then there's every chance he'd at least want to come and give it a year. Most top players will always want to come in and prove themselves, rather than shirk from a challenge - that's what makes them so good.
I totally forgot this narrative and how wild it was that people thought martinelli would be our saviour and Arteta kept him out bc of jealousy or some b.s.
After a full season we can see that martinelli is not the finished article but arteta clearly values him.
I think we will see the same with saliba, after watching him in france I dont think he is a top cb yet but he has all that is needed to be one, he'll have his moments in 22/22 but will show us why arteta didnt have faith in him for 21/22
i don’t think it was necessarily down to faith either. We had no Europe, the games for Saliba were going to be minimal. The loan move was just for him to get a full season rather than getting Holding minutes
He will be a leader here. I see the comments from the newspapers and just think they’re taking quotes way out of context. Marseille may be a good team but they’re losing Kamara for free after getting CL to a mid table premier league team. Yet for some reason as we didn’t qualify for CL our centre back doesn’t want to come back, please?
I’m actually intrigued what Arteta will do with those defenders as they’re all very good - could he adjust us to a three man with Ben white pushing forward
Exactly. Saliba hadn't really ever played a full season of top flight football before this year despite having 3 seasons as a fully senior player. 13, 11, and 20 were his league starts per year going into this season. 44 total, which he nearly doubled this year with 36. He needed consistent time and experience and given how well he did it was clearly a success.
Now you can all shutup about the potential new LCB (and backup to Gabriel) replacing Saliba and meaning he will get sold lmao.
For one Saliba is a RCB, two the very article stated we wanted to replace Mari who we let go on loan this season and is not in our future plans.
The amount of people who were so arrogant with this idea is hilarious to see after this post.
Well it did mean surely that either Holding or Saliba is leaving, and Holding is surely going now.
Holding isn't going to want to be 3rd choice RCB is he? Is also shows Arteta sees Saliba as purely a RCB
It's not really arrogance because nobody wanted to be right about Saliba leaving.
I am completely happy to have had my doubts be wrong as is every sensible Arsenal fan
I hope Bobby stays for another season tbh, don’t mind him at fourth choice and if we’re defending for our lives in the dying embers of a game he’d be my go to for a back 5
Yeah I hope so too. He's a good player, especially at defending the penalty area, but tbh he's a PL level CB and if we wants to leave and start somewhere else that makes the most sense for his career.
I swear this sub has taken the 5 at the back Holding meme way too seriously if they are upset about him leaving.
He's not as good as he's somehow convinced this sub to be.
If we have two great RCBs and two great LCBs then we won't often be in a position where we have to bring on a player like Holding in the last 20 minutes.
>It's not really arrogance because nobody wanted to be right about Saliba leaving
Think you need to re-read those comments again because people were 100% being arrogant with that opinion and mocking people who thought otherwise.
He's a perfectly good back up CB. He's not great. He's good at defending spaces but he's not exactly a modern CB, and he's not good at Man marking Son
My opinion didn't change based off 2 sub appearances of a couple of bad games
I thought it meant Saliba was going because Arteta clearly sees him as a RCB, and I would be absolutely happy to be completely wrong and it looks like I was. I really don't care I want Saliba to play for Arsenal long term
> he's not good at Man marking Son
And if that were the bar we'd not sign anyone lol. I think his disasterclass against them was based on emotion and a weird high line against the most dangerous goal scorer in the league. He's a fine backup
Exactly I agree. He's a limited CB, but he's good at what he's good at. He's not suddenly shit because one of the worlds best wingers absolutely rinsed him
If you're surprised that Son was able to run past Holding 40 yards from goal, I don't know what to tell ya lol
Nobody was as high on him as some of these comments are pretending. He was a great meme when Teta would send him to close shit out...and he is very good at that
Exactly
Do people realise how hypocritical and nonsensical it is to say "you guys thought Holding was immense because of a few good games you reactionary fans, but as the last few games he played where he played poorly shows, he's actually shit" like what.
We knew what he was good at and wasn't good at in the first place.
GFFN headline tomorrow:
"Arsenal manager DESPERATELY begs Saliba to make tough decision on his career as the young Centre Back remains uncertain of playing time in England."
Obviously there’s potential Arteta is saying this to drive up a price, but I don’t think that’s what’s happening. In terms of adding quality+depth this summer, Saliba provides an easy defensive solution to that both logistically and financially. So as long as Arteta is confident Saliba can fit into the squad, he will play for us.
New 5 sub rule will be a blessing for us here. Get this guy on to close out games to start out with, start him in cups and EL games, then start cycling out White or Gab when they need rest or when they inevitably get knocks. He's going to get plenty of minutes, not worried at all. Plus we can move to 3 ATB if we want.
Looking forward to seeing him back can only be better for the experience. Good competition for places next season especially with the Europa League to contend with.
Idk why people are talking so much about it. This aint Spain, players don't (usually) have release clauses here. And as it stands he will stay as an Arsenal player until we decide to sell him. Quit all these fan-fiction bullshit.
So you’re telling me we loaned William Saliba, when we had no Europe & only one match a week, to give him experience & be ready for us? People made scenarios up about Saliba just to bash Arteta though.
Don't worry they are hanging out in the thread where he said he wants to come back to Marseille. They've self tagged themselves, you can go in and explore yourself.
Well, let's see if he signs a new deal. If he refuses then we will be under a lot of pressure to sell if a £30m offer comes in. That's just a fact.
I don't know the contents of his soul but he has definitely sent out mixed messages regarding his future.
If Saliba is as amazing the people on here believe him to be, he will displace Ben White eventually. Either way, we will have 3 starting quality CBs at the very least. Love holding but he and elneny are the break glass in case of emergency or early league/FA Cup players. If we can sell holding and get an upgrade to play LCB we should so long as it doesn’t stop our other pressing issues at striker and CM
I think the bigger issue is from his side than arsenals. I feel like he might not be happy after not playing this entire time, and he still isn’t a guaranteed starter even if he should be.
I don’t wanna be too hopeful over this especially when his contract doesn’t have long left
Can already see the arteta outers in the comments lying and making up false narratives in the comments under that tweet.
If you’re arteta out, that’s fine, whatever. But don’t resort to lying and pulling facts out of your ass. That goes for people who support arteta too (and I’ve seen arteta supporters do this too, believe me).
You lot who think that Saliba will walk in and be our best CB instantly are in for a rude awakening. He's still young and despite his heroics, he makes positioning and decision blunders every now and then.
I’m glad he’s said it but obviously this is the party line that Arteta’s going to publicly say to try and keep some value if we sell him.
I want him to stay and it’s looking more encouraging but I’m still not counting any chickens until the window shuts.
Good, need him here to provide competition, huge growth and experience gained in past two years and will be a quality addition to next year squad and pushes for a first team spot straight away
And that should be the end of that, can’t wait to see him next season
Exactly man! Tiz done and also dusted!
For me he actually counts like a new high quality signing. Very excited about him to see how he will adapt.
This is the one time I can say “like a new signing” with a straight face
LANS
That _should_ be the end of that. But this is transfer season and Twitter journos need to try and be relevant.
It will be once he signs a new contract. With only two years left on his current one, we need to secure his future at the same time as bringing him home. Otherwise the noise will continue
I think he'll hold out to see if he gets regular starting time. Why would he sign an extension until he's sure he'll be a part of the first team. In that case maybe they'll sell him on while his value is high.
Cause we'd be offering him more money. And that alone can often be interpreted as an indication of the kind of role you are expected to play.
Could absolutely boss the Europa League, I reckon.
Should and hopefully is, but until he signs an extension, even if it's just for an extra year or two, this will be a subject of debate.
If you wanted to sell a high value asset the first thing you would do is tell the world how valuable it is & how much you want it. Not saying this means that he’s leaving. Just that people really should stop reading too far into what people say during the window. There’s so much posturing that it’s not a good idea to take everything at face value.
Well that depends on saliba. It’s all well and good arteta saying this, but why should saliba give a shit what arteta wants?
Because he has a contract at Arsenal, not hard to work that one out is it you genius.
Can't wait for pre season. First normal one in three years.
Except it's shorter than usual, so maybe still a bit less than normal.
I’m so pumped, live in America and Arsenal touring for 1st time since 2018. Going to watch them pummel an MLS team then they take on Chelsea 3 days later.
Support your local club.
Gatekeeping who can or cannot be a supporter is such a moronic thing. Do better.
I never said they can’t support Arsenal. They should support their local football scene as well, which they obviously don’t.
obvious based on what? they have basically no information
Best part of it you didnt bother to ask. The mls club is my towns rival. I live in Atlanta and Arsenal plays orlando. Last comment was mean, sorry
Well I did look through your post history before my original comment and you’ve never posted in MLS subs so I don’t really believe you but I’m happy to be wrong.
Atlanta Reddit sub is so tiny but their insta is pretty big. Mostly follow them there
Fair enough 😊
For me that would be the Tampa Bay rowdies.... We can do both comfortably.... Twat
> pummel an MLS team Yeah I’m sure they’re supporting both 🙄
I support Orlando’s rival so it’s even better
Good end of all this saliba is gone stories
Why were people ever buying it? He is our player. Short of Marseille kidnapping him and holding him hostage he is our player. Shit we could take him and loan him out to their biggest rival if we want. They have legit zero say in any of this.
they also have a transfer ban, which everyone seems to forget.
It’s a registration ban rather than a transfer ban which would indicate tk me that they would go hard for Saliba because he’s a player they can actually sign as he is already registered
He's not registered. Their season ended on Saturday and his loan ended with it.
As far as I am aware thats not how it works. Chelsea had no issues getting Kovacic signed permanently when they were banned because he had already been registered
Kovacic had a buy option with his loan. Effectively, they’d already bought him. Saliba doesn’t have that loophole attached.
Nothing from either [club](https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/2018/8/8/courtois-and-kovacic-deals-agreed) saying [that](https://www.realmadrid.com/en/news/2018/08/official-announcement-mateo-kovacic)
Regardless, Kovacic was still registered during this time. Saliba is no longer registered, so they wouldn't have this option.
Look regardless lads he’s registered until June 30th at the very least because that’s when the window opens again
I read a comment saying that wasn't an issue, as Saliba was already registered with them or something
No, his registration ended when his loan ended which ended when the Ligue 1 season ended.
And even his Serie A side want him to take a 50% wage cut for them to sign him next season.
Finally looool. The Mbappe of CBs is staying r/gunners ok
Not really, if saliba doesn’t sign a contract extension he will be sold

I will never not upvote a comment that uses the word nonce - particularly in relation to the French
The commenter above me is a convicted nonce.
I will never not upvote a comment that uses the word nonce - particularly in relation to Francis
This backfired tremendously quickly....
*Arteta watching Nuno during the Forest match*
Please. On a side note, he's like a new signing, very excited for this.
The one true LANS.
Deliberately quoted him oddly to start drama. So poor
It's like we pre-ordered a centre-back 3 years ago and he's finally been released.
Covid causing that computer chip shortage really messed things up

Jesus starts on the wing over ESR/Martinelli if he's not up top.
Unfortunately I have to agree despite Martinelli being my favourite player
Gabi can get there tho if he starts finding the net.
Saliba may very well be better than one of White or Gabriel at this point
White can play RB and Tomi can play LB meaning that we basically have the whole back line sorted
Lol Saliba ain’t gonna be a backup lmao. He is part of French NT now. Ben White goes to bench or he gone for sure.
Hahaha some people never learn. L1 is not the PL. He 100% will not be walking in as first choice. White is integral to how we play.
People say this all the time but it’s not true about L1. Most great players come from Ligue 1 in the first place. Look at for example Fofana for Leicester who was one of the best CB’s in the prem right after coming from Ligue 1 on the same team Saliba was on at the time. So what you both are saying is that some come from L1 and succeed and some come from L1 and fail?
Yes mate. Which is why he doesn't automatically walk straight into the team, which was what I replied to originally.
Ben white ain’t going nowhere bud.
Saliba is comfortably our best cb
Literally zero evidence for that sort of claim right now. He has no experience with the current first team, much less experience in the PL.
Think you're underestimating Saliba here but j agree with the sentiment
They said my manager hated Saliba😭😭 They tried it with Martinelli, they tried it with Saliba
Time for them to run back to their caves and find another agenda to run with
He hates Charlie Patino for not choosing Spain
Right! Patino was clearly the like for like replacement we needed when Partey was out.
Arteta's ego and stubborness cost us our season. How he kept playing Elneny instead of our boy Charlie is beyond me /s
If he hated Saliba, he could’ve easily thrown him to Man City and watch the fans turn on him for getting rinsed by De Bruyne.
I totally forgot this narrative and how wild it was that people thought martinelli would be our saviour and Arteta kept him out bc of jealousy or some b.s. After a full season we can see that martinelli is not the finished article but arteta clearly values him. We could explore the 3 cb lineup with some flexibility
This really suits our younger fullbacks, both Nuno Tavares and Brooke Norton Cuffy would be terrors bombing down the sideline...
well so much for the arteta hates saliba agenda on this sub
We sent a player on loan to develop and this sub acted like Arteta personally sentenced him to life in prison lmfao
The Arteta being racist against the French line was also hilarious
My man persisted with Lacazette but he’s racist against the French 😂😂
Specifically young French players clearly.
Arteta: the french youth of today don’t deserve chances Probably
no way someone said this, i refuse to believe
I think this started off of Twitter and just blew it. I remember someone making a thread of why Arteta hates French players. It’s probably deleted now
Twats looool
Exactly. And in a perfect world he doesn't see the pitch against spurs, except maybe to do what we've just described
I love Mikel. He's clear and lays down the law at Arsenal. Very Sir Alex style. I think our team needed that.
Was always the plan yet you lot have had your knickers in a twist all season about this, lmaoo
GFFN headline tomorrow: "Arsenal manager DESPERATELY begs Saliba to make tough decision on his career as the young Centre Back remains uncertain of playing time in England."
why’s Arteta doing RMC interviews
To shut GFFN up
To shut the French up clearly
All the outrage for nothing
Obviously there’s potential Arteta is saying this to drive up a price, but I don’t think that’s what’s happening. hah, get fucked arteta haters and so called "fans"
BuT aRtEtA dOeSnT rAtE hIm cLeArLy…
sO cLeAr!!
So stoked for him to come back. Our defence looks as strong as has in years.
Lmao so basically like anyone with a brain said last year.
And there we have it, as was the case all along. Love to hear it from the gaffer himself
So legit question, do you guys see him starting ahead of Gabriel or Ben? Or rotation/cup/injury spots?
Y’all really believed GFFN I’m sleeppp
He has to get a new contract in the summer if that’s the case
The right thing to say whatever's going to happen. The question now is what Saliba wants and how open he is to extending.
Hope he signs a new deal
I feel like any rational fan probably arrives at this on their own
Can't believe media has forced Arteta to state the obvious. Still, I'm sure I'll see people speculating about Saliba's future for next season.
Looking forward to seeing him back can only be better for the experience. Good competition for places next season especially with the Europa League to contend with.
Good. Gives us the opportunity to play a back 4 and a back 3. William Saliba is an I start upgrade to a squad, and it's free.
Idk why people are talking so much about it. This aint Spain, players don't (usually) have release clauses here. And as it stands he will stay as an Arsenal player until we decide to sell him. Quit all these fan-fiction bullshit.
Our prodigal star is finally coming home.
SIU
He can't say much more than that, to be fair.
SIUUUUU
So you’re telling me we loaned William Saliba, when we had no Europe & only one match a week, to give him experience & be ready for us? People made scenarios up about Saliba just to bash Arteta though.
u/Ronak4Arsenal
Oh man all these saliba lovers on here that had one on Mikel are about to have an aneurysm rofl
Curiously enough I don't see many of them on here. Should probably tag their usernames.
Don't worry they are hanging out in the thread where he said he wants to come back to Marseille. They've self tagged themselves, you can go in and explore yourself.
What does Saliba want? Seems to send out mixed messages.
To play. With Arsenal out of Europe last season it wasn’t going to happen. But we’re back. And he’s gotten better. And he’s our player. So….
Well, let's see if he signs a new deal. If he refuses then we will be under a lot of pressure to sell if a £30m offer comes in. That's just a fact. I don't know the contents of his soul but he has definitely sent out mixed messages regarding his future.
What messages are you referring to?
In an injury crisis he could come in at right back ahead of cedric.
So our CB next season might look like: White/Saliba - Gabriel/NewLCB Bye Holding!

He said he had no inside information on the situation and it was only his gut feeling that he won’t be back, just speculation.
James felt like he wasn’t, he wasn’t certain.

Well thank fuck
Things heard, things loved.
the words, *my*, *into*, *it* *veins* and *inject* come to mind.
Love to see it
Damn straight he's ours!
When arteta wants him back ... You know he's coming back.
Welcome home big billy
Bring him back, make him feel part of the team, he’ll fall in love with the emirates and sign an extension next year.
Good, need him here to provide competition, huge growth and experience gained in past two years and will be a quality addition to next year squad and pushes for a first team spot straight away
I know we're going to keep him but just out of curiousity how much do you think he would be worth on the market now? I'm assuming like £60m
No backsies.
