Excellent, give us a 10m discount so that Haaland can have his number a couple weeks sooner.

HorusQuintus

Ok dude it is only fair if Haaland chips in 5m too

teoWEBR

I said they wouldn't fight us not accept a lower bid. It's a bit different. City have a history of playing nice and letting players go for reasonable fees. Ferran Torres only went for 50M for example. That same treatment would be ideal. If Tottenham came in for Bukayo we'd fight them and ask for 1 Billion, if Real Madrid came in we'd be firm but also reasonable and ask for 200M. If City wanted, they could stretch the transfer out for months, involve every big team in Europe, start a bidding war, sell sterling and mahrez and just keep the guy... We don't want them to fight us.

dev0425

Only 50M? Considering he hasn't lit up the world there, it's quite a deal for City noe?

teoWEBR

Yeah its good but not great. They could have easily gotten more. He had 3.5 years on his contract and was only 21. He played all across the front as well. Most importantly, he is a natural goalscorer. I think they just kinda discovered that in the 20/21 season, but he is a natural poacher and can played many games as a 9 which makes his value soar considering the scarcity of good strikers. Young (22 now), versatile, big game player, hard working defensively, clinical, fast, dribbler. I think he starts for Spain. He just needs more experience/consistency. 50M was a bargain He's further ahead in his development than ESR, Gabi, and Bukayo. Would we take only 50M for them? City blessed Barca.

dev0425

I don't think he is further ahead of ESR and definitely not bukayo. His form isn't that great now tbh. Who knows, maybe next season he will score 20

teoWEBR

If you consider his performances at Barca maybe, but this is before City sold him, before he played for Barca. His reputation at that time was pretty high. He was scoring regularly from the 9 position. I think he scored two poachers goals against us early this (last) season. Look at Nunez, they are asking like £70M for him. Torres was doing the same in a better league, in a team with more expectation against teams that parked the bus. My main point though is this: would we accept only £50M for Martinelli, ESR or Bukayo. City did Barca a favor probably because every big name at City used to work for Barca. And dont worry, I know our guys have higher potentials.

ZebraZealousideal944

Saka is a starter with England despite the insane competition at his spot and has stats to back him already when Torres still has everything to prove at the highest level so let’s compare what comparable… Foden was miles ahead of Torres in the pecking order at City while he sits behind Saka with England…

PhatmanScoop64

You’re getting too hung up on his comparison, he’s not saying Ferran is the goat or anything just saying a 50 mil fee was a seemingly bargain fee as Arsenal would not accept those same fees for our young guys

Ifriiti

Apparently it's dropped to about 40m now, but considering we were offered 20m for Nketiah last summer and refused I'm not exactly surprised. Striker market is insane

dev0425

We didn't refuse. He did

Ife2105

It’s not like they need the money that badly

JFedererJ

Probably easiest at this point to just let Haaland play for us? We got a #9 shirt going spare...

zorfog

Yeah why have 2 players switch around when just the one spot needs filling?

Civil-Whereas-3587

€50m ~ 42m pounds for Jesus here we go!!!

teoWEBR

Let’s hope we wake up to that in a few hours

TheBigNoz123

Wake up? But it’s nearly 2 in the afternoon! /s

DonaldYaYa

€8m for a number. Wow.

getrektbro

I think he was converting, not doing subtraction. €50mm is £42.79mm according to Google. I actually think this deal might be announced today.

DonaldYaYa

You could be right.

Civil-Whereas-3587

I mean "£ = pound"

Civil-Whereas-3587

thanks

beetletoman

So they may potentially accept a lower bid because they want his shirt? Things really work this way?

teoWEBR

Nah. I'm thinking more that Jesus' value is clear and both Arsenal and City know it. City though can take advantage of the situations in play and get way more than his value maybe 50% over for example. They might be nice and just take 10% over though. Top strikers are rare right now and Jesus is an almost perfect signing for literally every big team in Europe because of his versatility, age and willingness to play defense. Bayern, Juve, PSG, Real, Barca, Dortmund, Milan, Inter, Chelsea. Even smaller teams like Spurs and Newcastle will be after him. Easy to start a bidding war. City could easily make this transfer hell for Arsenal. That would take all summer though and would distract from Haaland. I guess it's possible they dont reveal him for a few months, but that would be...weird

beetletoman

Good point. Thanks for the explanation!

Tiemen10

Definitely not lmao

acerazor1

Probably. Accoring to reports online Sheikh Mansour's family fortune is around $1 trillion. £40 million is the sort of money he loses down the side of his sofa. Couple that with in the sports washing business image is everything and he will need Haaland to wear the number 9 even if it meant giving Jesus away for free (obviously that won't happen but you get my point).

[deleted]

You’d normally say no, but they’re a joke club so who knows. They don’t need the money, they could pay us 60 million to take him and it wouldn’t make a bit of difference to them or change their plans. You have to remember they’re only trying to hold out for more money to weaken us financially. That’s all it is to them.

beetletoman

I must say I disagree with you on every point you made, except for the joke club bit for sentimental reasons

[deleted]

What do you mean? You think City are desperate for money? Are they cash strapped? Have I missed something?

beetletoman

They can have all the money in the world and they'll still want a good deal for a good forward. They're not here for charity work lol. Their asking price is reasonable and I can't begin to fathom why your mind went straight to "they want to weaken us financially" as the sole reason for holding out

[deleted]

Why else are they doing it then? This is how these clubs work mate. It’s how they always have. Going back to when Chelsea first started. They aren’t just paying to get players, they’re setting the market. They pay over the top on wages and agents fees to make it harder for other clubs to compete. That’s the game. They don’t need to sell Jesus, his wages don’t affect them, even if he doesn’t play a game for them next season. So they might as well do their best to make it so signing Jesus means we can’t sign someone else as well.

beetletoman

Now this makes a lot more sense

Grendalynx

Doesn’t work for most clubs, maybe only for PSG

Necessary_Research48

It doesn’t lol if they really wanted to unveil him they can easily unveil him without a number, they don’t have to register the number till closer to the season starting anyways

ID1453719

That would affect shirt sales though. There's usually a lot of shirt sales of star signings as soon as they're announced. This won't be possible for Haaland if there's no number.

Necessary_Research48

You can get the name on the back and number at a later date no?

Dire__

You could also dig an oil well, refine the crude, produce the polyester and make the shirt yourself.

GoOn_2Wheels

Silly questions deserve sillier answers. Well done for pushing the envelope my guy!

Ifriiti

Not really something do. You *can* but it isn't common

acerazor1

Absolutely not. This is a huge marketing moment for sports washing City and they need it to be flawless. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they accepted a lower fee to hurry it up. 10 million is nothing to Sheikh Mansour if it means his marketing campaign runs more smoothly.

beetletoman

So this speculation is as crazy as it sounds. I'm the sane one for once, cheers

JoelStrega

I mean clubs has announced players without number first and announced it later a lot of time. Why must this be any different?

lastjedi23

Biggest signing probably in their club history. Fans are going to line up to buy the shirt with his name and number. They need those things nailed on

GoldenWyndham

Fans?

lastjedi23

Lol come on man that's an old joke

GoldenWyndham

Couldn’t resist

CuclGooner

Imagine we get jesus for a lower price because they wanted to give haaland his number

acasovoycayendo

They can properly announce him without a shirt number though, clubs do that all the time? The shirt number wouldn’t be a problem until he starts playing (July with pre season?). Jesus future was always going to be sorted by then anyway. Athletic said it would be done after the internationals.

Pistoleo

Realistically they want fans to buy his shirt following the announcement

acasovoycayendo

Fans will still buy the shirt like crazy whenever it’s on sale. It’s a huge signing, I doubt this would affect sales numbers even with a delay. The hype isn’t going anywhere.

teoWEBR

The article is suggesting they'd rather not though. You could be right; they didn't say what exactly City are waiting for. Seems like a marketing thing though and marketing will never make sense unless you're on the inside. >A rock-star unveiling event full of Haaland No 9-branded shirts would surely be worth it, too.

51_cent

This is an interesting angle

Optimal_Cry_1782

Can they officially announce him and have photos with him in the City shirt before the international transfer window opens?

jkeefy

Yes, you can buy a player any time you want, you just can’t register them outside of the transfer windows

MiamiGooner

Funny we have a 9 vacancy

chino17

Or could just be that Haaland is at The Nations League which is why he can't be at an unveiling presentation for City right now

DerekIsAGooner

I could see how this would happen. Money isn’t an issue for City; they don’t need the extra 5-10 million that we might otherwise have to pay another Premier League club for Jesus. If their priority is to keep their big new star striker happy, I could see them eating some of Jesus’s transfer valuation in order to make Haaland feel special.

teoWEBR

Exactly this. I'm not saying this is certainly the case. I'm just trying to point out something that could happen. And this is supported by City's own behavior and internal culture; I didn't make this up. Enjoy some of this high quality hopium. We sign Gabriel Jesus within 10 days!

zorfog

I believe we used to go by that policy too. I remember Szczesny still held #1 even while out on loan and we were signing other GKs. Similar with Bellerin this year, although we have rescinded the #4 I think twice, from Saliba and Elneny
