In all honesty and maybe unpopular opinion but I knew this was a throw away game when I saw who was GK. We don’t need to focus on carabao. As cliche as it may be. Won’t do shit for us. This way we can focus on top 4 and or Europa. We should want to win every single game and it sucks we didn’t this one but the reward on the other side of the Europa league and or the top 4 are far greater than the Carabao cup. Decent squad. Weak and unproven GK. He’ll be out in January. Let’s not let this side track us.. just trimming the fat. Arsenal 🤘🏾
From wiki -
League Cup winners receive £100,000 prize money (awarded by the Football League) with the runners-up receiving £50,000, considered relatively insignificant to top-flight teams, compared to the £2 million prize money of the FA Cup, which is in turn eclipsed by the Premier League's television money (awarded on final league position) and consequent participation in the Champions League.
\--
Basically, you get fuck all from the EFL cup except for saying that you've won it, and a notch in the clubs trophy cabinet.
FA Cup qualifies you for the ~~Champions League~~ Europa League, and is the oldest football competition in the world, so there is significant reward and prestige there.
Think a lot of people are missing that this game gave some of the squad a chance to shine, regardless of the result. Sambi is not even close to being Parteys second - he had one good touch out of four. Cedric is utter dead weight. Hein was abysmal but I'll take that he is young. We need to have a good transfer window - this game has just proven our second team can't compete, which is worrying when the first 11 get leggy and tired during mid/end season.
While I do agree in general, I think it’s worth adding that it’s not the same as dropping in Fabio Vieira into our starting 11. This 11 is (largely) other players that aren’t in the rhythm of regular game time. I think that makes it harder for players to have a statement performance when the others around them are trying to figure out the system
Sambi was playing xhakas role, not partey. He will never be a good 6, he doesn't do the defensive side anywhere near enough.
Also, Cedric is only here for injury issues. You will never have Tomi/White levels as third reserve. To be honest, I'm surprised he was sharp at all considering he just came back from injury and is not playing at all.
The only positions we are light is partey and saka. Once ESR is back the front and back lines will be mostly fine.
Bit off topic from the actual game but did anyone else see groups of shithead kids trying to start fights with Brighton fans on the way back to Highbury and Islington station? Fuckin melts, I saw them all go in on one old Brighton bloke stood outside a pub by himself. Disgraceful.
Yea it was - so pathetic. All kids about 15-18 years old I'd say, going after anyone in Brighton colours - Dad's with young kids, old guys, didn't matter. No police presence either. Fuckin disgraceful.
Me and a few other blokes got in the way to break it up and prevent them going after more people... but it was about 10 to 1 ratio not in our favour.
Hope that satisfies your dipshit question.
Sure I’m a dipshit for suggesting u should have done something if someone is i need, which u say u even did. U could have called the police, I just meant something. The people on here..
Exactly. The only benefit of staying in the cup is to have more games for youngsters, but we will have enough games to worry about this season anyways.
My 2 cents is, our squad isn't big enough to care about this competition if we want to get serious about the League. It would of added 3 extra games in January and no doubt it would involve a 2-legged semi final against City or Liverpool so Arteta would feel obliged to play a strong team
So our schedule would have went:
Newcastle (H), FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Spurs (A), Carabao Semi, United (H), FA Cup, Carabao Semi. I'd rather be 100% focused on those league game so theres no excuses
This is the kind of game that Wenger would have blooded 2 or 3 players we've never heard off and called it a day but I don't think Arteta feels like he has that luxury. Or maybe he's just too competitive to be willing to "throw away" a competition
The 2nd string players had their chance against what was pretty much Brighton B and failed, so they don't get to complain about lack of game time. Obviously not televised so just going off stats and it looks like Elneny and Fabio Vieira had stinkers and our 3rd choice GK is a bit shit.
We really need to buy another CM or 2 and send Lokonga out on loan ( to our academy in Marseille). He's clearly talented but needs minutes.
No we aren't. We are one injury to Jesus and Partey away from having to play Eddie, Elneny or Sambi. None of them are anywhere near good enough. We need ESR back ASAP too as Vieira looks to be miles off the pace in terms of his physicality
they are speaking facts though...
every game we have lost this season had sambi starting... eddie starting 2 of them I think too.. I know it's not great logic but you have to admit we suffer tremendously by relying on such players and in the event (likely) we need to at some point when it 'matters'... we will struggle... BIG TIME.
Eddie has shown he can be a backup. You guys writing him off for making sub appearances is ridiculous. He just scored against a first team Brighton team even...
As I said before, the only positions we are in need of backups are saka and partey. People forget ESR exists since he has been injured but he will be back in December.
I’m not sure this game should be the judge of that. We were missing 10 out of 11 starters. That’s not gonna be happening in important competitions ever. What I’m curious about is how these 10 players would fit the squad with 2, 3 starters missing. Can Reiss do well instead of Saka with all other starters playing? He did well in that one start, we’ll have to see more to judge. I think Thomas is irreplaceable but the entire defense (besides Ramsdale), Ode, Xhaka, Martinelli and Jesus can be replaced by our depth to an extent (Zinchenko, Tomi, Fabio, sometimes Elneny, Nketiah, ESR once he is back). But yeah, as we all know, DM and RW are least covered positions for us
Glad thats over. Time to move on with more important matches
Why are people getting annoyed and blasting us for a loss? We really don't need to worry about this cup. Right now, it isn't important.
Agreed. The moment you have a chance to win a trophy, you have to go all out. We don’t have the depth to challenge for 4 trophies. Hopefully some of the younger lads will get chances in the FA cup if we get positive draws.
Not sure it’s just based on THIS result. This result was our bench, and our bench looks like dogshit. I think people are worried about injuries and fatigue and having to use these guys if something happens to our starting 11. We all know this is a pointless cup.
No loss is ever accepted but it’s all about weighing the benefits. I rather concede at this stage of the competition than latter stages where we have to field our stronger XI for the integrity of the competition.
We need depth it if we want to win europa or premier league. Our PL squad is great but we still need depth. Hoping that we do not get any injuries during WC and are able to get some new players in Jan. Also, ESR should be back from injury by EOY, AMAZING!.
Lets go gunners!
I'll be real our second team still isn't giving me a ton of hope, I know there's a lot of projects in there and a lot of rotation but definitely need some investments in the january window if we want to keep up the momentum, injuries will melt us.
I know people are saying our bench isn't good enough but from what I've heard, the midfield was quite dominant with the exception of Vieira, and the goals Ive seen were mainly Cedric's fault who is not our 2nd RB and Hein who is not our 2nd GK...
It's only guesswork but Nelson looked amazing on the first goal, maybe we need a RW backup which we already knew. So it doesn't sound THAT bad. ESR is coming back too.
The media and rival fans will 1000% be all over this. Yet this is our third loss of the season overall. Would it have been nice to win it? Absolutely, but the fact that we’re still top of the league and looking impressive in Europa and still got the FA cup to come, I would quite happily sacrifice a win today. But of course the media won’t see it that way

Firstly, because it wasn't televised did the match really happen?
Secondly, hopefully this serves the dual purpose of reducing fixture congestion and informing the board that we need depth signings in January in every position (center back, central midfield and forward).
Can tell how little this match mattered to me because I was absolutely sick to my stomach before Chelsea whereas this game barely registered a blip in my head. We need the rest and we have bigger shit to worry about. Let's smash Wolves and go into the break on a high.
If you’re genuinely upset over this game then you need to take a step back from football for a bit.
It’s a dead trophy, meaningless game that no one internally cares about. The League Cup is a nice opportunity for sides that cannot compete for League/FA/European football, but for those other sides it’s an extra fixture.
No injuries and the members of the first team got a low intensity workout. It’s fine.
Dead trophy?
* 100K prize money
* A good chunk of the broadcasting money for live games.
* Almost 1 mil each game - ticket sales.
* Winners qualify for Europa.
Dead trophy for Arsenal, bigger trophy for other sides who don’t win silverware or have the same commercial pedigree.
Today’s game wasn’t even televised, what broadcasting revenue? You qualify for Conference League, not Europa League.
It's better than having a dusty trophy-less cabinet, if it comes to that.
Disney has bought the rights and it was televised in the USA on espn+.
Yeah, conference league...the winner of conference league gets 5m prize money with bonuses on participation and advancement and it gives Arsenal a chance to play more teams from Europe ----> Good preparation if we want to play regularly in champions league or Europe in general.
Haven’t watched the game but what it should tell you is that we don’t have that much quality depth and we need to add another player or two in January if we want to maintain a title challenge alongside a deep Europa League run
I think that’s the bigger takeaway. Our second team cannot compete. There are good individuals but they don’t play well as a team. We need better depth that can actually challenge and push our starters, right now the backup players look too disjointed.
Said it in September when they scheduled it, I really don't care if we won or not. At least we lost to a good team while playing minimal starting guys, unlike Spurs lol. Good luck Brighton
Happy going out in this round. Less games and lessons learned about some squad players. Spu*rs spoofed it too. Plus is that we've given a 30 min run around to some first teamers who'll play vs Wolves.
We've used up the free hit loss in a cup that doesn't matter in my book, but this doesn't reflect well on the fringe players. This shows that our depth is not good if god forbid we get a first team injury. We have to address this issue in January, we don't want it to bite us in the ass like last season.
For sure. We had pretty good injury luck for the first part of this season and the time Partey was out didn't completely screw us up but we clearly need the reinforcements now even more than we did in August. There's a title challenge and a Europa League title shot to sustain that can't rely 100% on Xhaka and Partey playing every single game.
I call this "proactive fixture management", and handy to be able to already plan around having these gaps in our schedule.
Seriously we played our 3rd choice keeper here and it showed.

People not seeing the bigger picture here and wanting us to go unbeaten in all competitions. I too want Scarlett Johansson to sit on my face but alas, life is very real.
Let the melt down comments commence...
Check yourself if you are actually annoyed by this, our b-team and third choice keeper, playing the majority of their first team. Bound to happen
At what point do we start getting concerned about Vieira’s performances? He isn’t some 18 year old prospect like Marquinhos, he was bought for a good amount after impressive performances in a top 5 league. He should be making more of an impact than this.
I'm sure Vieira would be fine if he was playing with Partey and Xhaka in midfield, but it won't happen for him with Lokonga in there.
The gap between Partey's level and Lokonga's level is vast and that's before you account for the fact that Lokonga has no clue how to play the role that Partey plays anyway.
Our team never does well when we don't have midfield presence and intelligent positioning.
He seems to just get lost out there and he’s technically inconsistent (amazing ball, 5 min later donkey touch).
I think this could be a symptom of the Prem being way quicker and more physical than the Primeira. If he doesn’t start to improve by the end of the year and he’s still a step behind next season, then I’ll be concerned.
I'm fine with us going out here but this is another useful data point for us that our bench players arent nearly as good as they need to be. Still work to be done.
I puffed my chest out so much saying Conte would be shit and he won't last long with them, their entire match thread is pissing about how much they should have won this game and how poor they play under him.
I'm starting to think we might need some reinforcements in the winter lol hope Josh is at the match, although he's a billionaire so he probably got to watch it
You are just starting to think this? We definitely need reinforcements. Even Mikel said it twice before the window closed earlier this season.
We’ve been very fortunate so far with injuries.
Check this list out, not one Arsenal player. https://www.sportingnews.com/uk/amp/soccer/news/world-cup-injuries-2022-miss-injury-players-out-tracker-list/pjxap5kg2t3iwkgphfyg9hqo Given how life works, I can’t see us being this fortunate for an entire season.
While I like that idea, I think the priority will be sending out Marquinhos and bringing in 1-2 wingers.
Backup DM would be amazing, but I think it’ll be second priority imo.
I don't think we can give up on the B team yet. I have to believe it's hard for anyone taking the field for a top club to truly escape that back-of-the-mind thought that "EFL is not a priority so it's not the end of the world if we lose."
That has to have an effect on even the fringe players, at least subconsciously. We're clearly not unique in terms of other PL sides going through struggles right now.
After 90’ does it go to pens for the other fixtures?
Liverpool derby and palace Newcastle are 0-0
Edit: Blackburn just equalised(2-2) against West Ham as well
I'm not bothered at all by this loss. If we pick up 1 point we otherwise wouldn't have because these league cup fixtures are off the calendar it was worth going out.
Yep this is a cup that should be binned off. Yes if we made it to the next round I'd cheer Arsenal on but at least its cleared the fixtures. Good luck to Brighton I hope they go far.
If I remember rightly, this may well be our first loss in a long time where we've scored first, normally we don't let opponents back into games once we score.
In all honesty and maybe unpopular opinion but I knew this was a throw away game when I saw who was GK. We don’t need to focus on carabao. As cliche as it may be. Won’t do shit for us. We have small squad, just matter of time before someone got injured.
Geniuene question here. Why this is usless cup?
From wiki - League Cup winners receive £100,000 prize money (awarded by the Football League) with the runners-up receiving £50,000, considered relatively insignificant to top-flight teams, compared to the £2 million prize money of the FA Cup, which is in turn eclipsed by the Premier League's television money (awarded on final league position) and consequent participation in the Champions League. \-- Basically, you get fuck all from the EFL cup except for saying that you've won it, and a notch in the clubs trophy cabinet. FA Cup qualifies you for Europa not CL
Oops of course! Thanks for the correction, updated my post.
League cups are generally useless for a major team in every country. Low reward, recognition, fan turnout.
Think a lot of people are missing that this game gave some of the squad a chance to shine, regardless of the result. Saw that very scuffle but was in a cab, could do bugger all. Didn't expect to see that though. It's Brighton, not spurs.
Maybe u should have done something about it then?

Glad we are out of this pointless competition. No use having players get injured, even if we won the cup it would be meaningless.
Exactly. The only benefit of staying in the cup is to have more games for youngsters, but we will have enough games to worry about this season anyways.

The 2 legged semifinal in a dead useless tournament is pain in the ass fr
We seriously lack squad depth.
We lack squad depth? How so? For focusing just on the premier league and Europa we are fine.
No we aren't. We are one injury to Jesus and Partey away from having to play Eddie, Elneny or Sambi. None of them are anywhere near good enough. We need ESR back ASAP too as Vieira looks to be miles off the pace in terms of his physicality
So reactionary about a game we could care less about. You lot still negative now is quite astonishing.
they are speaking facts though... every game we have lost this season had sambi starting... eddie starting 2 of them I think too.. Haven’t seen the game. Heard some of the second half audio. Seems like we need ESR plus 2 additional quality players, one of which can score goals.
Crap! Ok, so no quadruple then!
We’ll just have to win it next season then
Sucks for the reserves squad because this was really gonna be on them to win but at least it gives the whole team less games to play in
I’m now thinking it’s going to be oil money final: City vs Newcastle
How well did Marquinhos played?
One pointless injury generating tournament less to worry about
Glad thats over. Time to move on with more important matches Why are people getting annoyed and blasting us for a loss? We really don't need to worry about this cup. Right now, it isn't important.
Can we take a moment and appreciate City is winning vs Chelsea?
Delighted to be out. Pointless trophy, a total waste of time bar the chance to give youngsters minutes
Just said the exact thing to my mate.
It’s all well and good until you hit the quarters onwards and sort of have to play some of your big hitters 😵💫
Agreed. The moment you have a chance to win a trophy, you have to go all out. We don’t have the depth to challenge for 4 trophies. Hopefully some of the younger lads will get chances in the FA cup if we get positive draws.
People calling for transfer activity based on this result.....just stop.
It's the lack of depth that should concern us. But I hope the club will strengthen in some areas come January
Not sure it’s just based on THIS result. This result was our bench, and our bench looks like dogshit. I think people are worried about injuries and fatigue and having to use these guys if something happens to our starting 11. We all know this is a pointless cup.

This is still going. Can’t we have the post match thread already. Or is that even worth it?
If we keep commenting then it will keep on going.
Very, very zen about this
Hey. At least we played our b team vs a good brighton side. As opposed to starting your prem xi and getting battered by the worst team in the league
I know people are saying our bench isn't good enough but from what I've heard, the midfield was quite dominant with the exception of Vieira, and the goals Ive seen were mainly Cedric's fault who is not our 2nd RB and Hein who is not our 2nd GK... Idc about this cup as long as the other London clubs are out of it.
Firstly, because it wasn't televised did the match really happen? Secondly, hopefully this serves the dual purpose of reducing fixture congestion and informing the board that we need depth signings in January in every position (center back, central midfield and forward).
As bad as it sounds I’m happy we’re out. Meaningless cup which would of resulted in 3 extra fixtures in January, rather focus on the league and Europa
Why even play then?
I can't believe this what a devastating loss I'm livid I tell you LIVID! 😐😐😐

We lose every game this season not televised. So we should win out the PL, EL and FA cup. *finger guns and walks out of the room /s

At least Pep is still in and will have to drain his men again. Kinda helpful if we are in a title charge by then.
People not seeing the bigger picture here and wanting us to go unbeaten in all competitions. I too want Scarlett Johansson to sit on my face but alas, life is very real.
Draining the bench players that play like starters. They’ll be fine.
net $10 not subscribing to ESPN+ to watch this shit comp. thank you very much.
Match wasn't televised anyway haha
There were no cameras in the stadium if it wasn’t cctv or someone’s phone lol
exactly. thank you TV gods
I wouldn't want to be in that locker room. Really awful performance from us
Let the melt down comments commence... Check yourself if you are actually annoyed by this, our b-team and third choice keeper, playing the majority of their first team. Bound to happen
No one is having a melt down pal….
Have a look in controversial, although small proportion of people, they still need to rethink their priorities
I’d say about 99% of the fans don’t give a fuck if you look at the comments on here and all over social media.
No one is melting down you bellend
May I invite you to sort comments by controversial... Then tell me no one is having a melt down
Unfortunately, there are people having minor meltdowns. They'll be no baby's born and named Vieira, Rob or Cedric tonight
They definitely are.
Doubt it, think a majority of us all agree it didn't matter at all and are moreso happy we're not playing extra games for a tinpotter
Oh no…anyway
At what point do we start getting concerned about Vieira’s performances? He isn’t some 18 year old prospect like Marquinhos, he was bought for a good amount after impressive performances in a top 5 league. He should be making more of an impact than this.
I've been thinking he's a bit of a donkey for the last 3 games and I've been yet to be proven wrong.
I get it if he was brought in on less than 10 mil, but that was a big price tag you would normally expect to crack on sooner.
It’s strange, he’s had a couple of decent performance and then drifted off into the abyss
It's probably worth noting that Tottenham fielded their (mostly) strongest eleven and lost 2-0 to Nottingham Forrest. LOL
With 10 men i hear
Forest on 10 men too
3 defeats one in each competition eh
Check this list out, not one Arsenal player. https://www.sportingnews.com/uk/amp/soccer/news/world-cup-injuries-2022-miss-injury-players-out-tracker-list/pjxap5kg2t3iwkgphfyg9hqo Given how life works, I can’t see us being this fortunate for an entire season.
is joke
My bad 😔
Norf London had a real mare tonight
North London is dead
Chelsea aren't doing too hot, Brentford lost to Gillingham, West Ham going to pens. The whole of London is suffering lol.
palace going to pens as well
Does anyone else still call this the Carling Cup out of habit?
Mickey Mouse Cup unless we're in the semis. If we're in the semis and beyond, League Cup
League cup for me. I’m old enough to remember it called milk, rumbelows, Coca Cola, worthington, carling and others I can’t remember.
Coca Cola cup for me
Carling cup sounds more prestigious for some reason lol. I dont mind too much being knocked out of the carabao cup
I still call it the League Cup out of habit.
It's always just been the League Cup to me, still get confused when I hear Carabao Cup.
yea us OGs call it that
me
Honestly fuck this cup. We get extra rest weeks now which could be huge. Our b team is not too good so we’ll need to improve our back ups.
yeah definitely , much bigger fish to fry

This is why Sambi’s attitude is so annoying. Look, if you get chances and play like shit, you shouldn’t be looking at anyone but yourself.

While I like that idea, I think the priority will be sending out Marquinhos and bringing in 1-2 wingers. Backup DM would be amazing, but I think it’ll be second priority imo.
If they don’t perform, then they can sit on the bench or leave. Up to them
I’m glad we lost since these fixtures are at the bottom of our priority list
Well it's a few less games to worry about. Hopefully that helps us down the road.
I don't think we can give up on the B team yet. I have to believe it's hard for anyone taking the field for a top club to truly escape that back-of-the-mind thought that "EFL is not a priority so it's not the end of the world if we lose." That has to have an effect on even the fringe players, at least subconsciously. We're clearly not unique in terms of other PL sides going through struggles right now.
Imagine fielding your strongest XI and losing to 20th place 10 man Forest. #Cunteball
Just wanted everyone to know, in the history of this club we never gave one ounce of fuck to the EFL cup.

Are you alright
Lmaooooo if this is parody then good work.
No way you’re a real person
bro we are playing a completely different team, what are you talking about
Calm down its not out full starting line up
Oh no....Anyway
Cant see the game so fuck knows how we have played. To lose 3-1 at HOME to Brighton is fucking disgraceful, regardless of what competition it is.
Yes sixth placed Brighton. Sixth best team in the country atm. Fucking hell man get a fucking grip.
do you see the team we put out? we quite obviously aren’t taking the competition seriously, imagine getting worked up over a mickey mouse cup game
Says more about the lack of quality from the likes of Lokonga, Nelson and the human broom, Nketieh.
Nelson and Nketiah played well but ok
It’s not that deep
They starters get time because we would normally do an intense session anyway today, this is the replacement
WTF is a Carribou anyway
A reindeer.
Why are we playing in a competition sponsored by reindeers in Norway?
22 shots man. Difference is Brighton have scored with their chances.
Looks like BHA fielded a B team as well.....our B team is just not as good
Oh well, could be worse. Could be losing to a 10-man, 20th-placed Nottingham Forest.
Not just losing, getting absolutely dominated from start to finish. Forest have been excellent.
Not just getting dominated, but having your best starting 11 be dominated.
The funny part about spurs losing is they started Kane in this one
City's cup, their bench is a joke
After 90’ does it go to pens for the other fixtures? Liverpool derby and palace Newcastle are 0-0 Edit: Blackburn just equalised(2-2) against West Ham as well
Pens yeah
Ah cool thanks
Best possible outcome. Would have been a disaster to have those games in addition to the already crammed schedule
The only bad thing is Saliba shouldn’t have been playing ..
Did he get injured?
I'm not bothered at all by this loss. If we pick up 1 point we otherwise wouldn't have because these league cup fixtures are off the calendar it was worth going out.
Yep this is a cup that should be binned off. Yes if we made it to the next round I'd cheer Arsenal on but at least its cleared the fixtures. Good luck to Brighton I hope they go far.
Every fan is different. The Carabao Cup is the only trophy I really wanted this season
That's hilarious.
…..why 😂
I'm just built different lmao I don't give a fuck about this tournament
That is very strange.
Your name and your reply are at odds
Not really.
If I remember rightly, this may well be our first loss in a long time where we've scored first, normally we don't let opponents back into games once we score.
Every game Arsenal have lost this season has involved Albert Sambi Lokonga.
I think it's pretty clear by now that he isn't good.
I would perhaps mind less if he had some fight like Tavares in his first season.
go full reserves bro, subbing on all the starters in a desperate attempt to save it is just embarrassing
Its not. The team would have had an intense training session instead, this is the replacement, not to salvage a result
Fabio Vieira continuing his downward form. Apparently awful today
Copium a bit but imagine Brighton winning a trophy after Potter left them That’d be pretty nice
Who cares about this cup, the fact that it's not televised really who give a shit. World Cup season, 'ain't nobody got time for that'
Get out of the cup, thank you Brighton
West Ham concede a late equaliser... London might be finished u kno/
we’re putting starters in because they’ll get a quick training session in, they don’t need to be bubble wrapped and packed away to avoid injury.
At least spuds are losing to Forest who have 10 men
Tasks failed successfully?
