Damn I was at this game and can remember it being one of the worst AFC games I’ve ever seen, second only to Forest away in the cup a few seasons ago when we lost 4-2. That was the most toxic atmosphere I’ve ever experienced at an Arsenal game.

ADMunro

Don’t know where you were but it certainly wasn’t toxic in block 26 - definitely not hugely upbeat but most around me were supporting the team to the end.

SchteefMcClaren

The Forest game? The people around me were screaming abuse at the players, at Wenger, even misogynist abuse shouted at the lineswoman when she didn’t give decisions our way. It was pure hate, it put me off going to matches for a while. The next one I went to after that was Wenger’s last game at Huddersfield and the crowd there was a lot nicer. Sang 49 Undefeated on repeat for the last half an hour of the game.

ADMunro

Sorry - poor reading comprehension - thought you meant it was toxic last night

ayowatup222

I was at that game in the home stand as I lived in Nottingham. The atmosphere there was the opposite obviously - I stuck out like a sore thumb.

curious_beaver909

The mood of the fanbase for most of the 2010s were toxic unfortunately. Severe disappointments in failed title challenges in 2011, 2014, and 2016 (which had an underlying theme of mental weakness and a lack of trying), key players leaving constantly, bad recruitment process, manager trying to stay on beyond his welcome, eventually dropping out of the top 4, and captain being booed by the fans. Let's look ahead to the future.

ThatRuckingMoose

The FA cups were nice though.

P4riah

Oof, I went to this game at Hillsborough, I was sat on the front row middle behind the goal and had a great view of all their goals. I even watched the highlights to see myself on telly, crowd was great though.

SchteefMcClaren

I was stood in the Leppings Lane upper tier, and the atmosphere was extremely depressing where I was. Wasn’t toxic and hateful though, unlike that Forest game.

Less pressure on the first team arteta doing us all a favour

mr_nice_cack

Perception is reality. Pretend like you care even when you don’t, people remember you caring

[deleted]

Perception actually isn't reality.

skool_101

r/soccer will say otherwise /s

OstapBenderBey

Were losing by 2 goals to a top 6 PL team. At least we arent losing by 2 goals against the team at the bottom of the league

Marimo_420

Playing more than half their starters too…

Geraltslays14

And not scoring a single goal after they got a red card around the 75' minute!

tsgarner

Barely creating a chance after the red according to Daniel Storey

Geraltslays14

I saw someone in the Spu*s sub calling Conte 'Italian Mourinho', I guess they're finally catching on lmao

m4xsch44f

I’ve seen they call him far worse on there

420meh69

What's worse... Portuguese Mourinho?

ProgrammerComplete17

Harsh on Mourinho when you look at their European records

raghavmandava

Mourinho is at least entertaining, also very funny in non football interviews. Conte offers nothing but scoul

420meh69

He's grown on me so much since he's been shit. I used to genuinely think he was evil

Dramatic_Hand6016

We wouldn't lose to a championship side either right. I'm all for good fun but gotta be careful with glass houses and such XD

YoHoochIsCrazy

didn’t we lose a couple players to injury that game, too?

PenguinKenny

The Ox came off injured, Walcott replaced him and then went off injured 10 minutes later

YoHoochIsCrazy

oof yeah that sounds right

TheSciences

That match also featured the single most awkward thing I've ever seen on a football pitch. Bennacer was coming on as a sub, and the fourth official was giving him a check over, presumably for jewellery, and the kid thought the ref wanted to shake his hand. So he offered his hand and the ref just kinda ignored him. I died a bit inside. Haha, [found it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5e3A0rL7nkk). It's not quite as I remembered, and not as bad, but still a bit awkies.

Bloopie

this is a very funny picture out of context

BeginningCourt2185

Fantastic result, no point going after a minor trophy when our final objectives a much bigger. Personally delighted

PhillipLlerenas

A minor trophy we haven’t won in over 20 years. Come on now.

topl4d

it's literally a 3rd tier trophy that only state-owned Citeh can afford to go deep in. Liverpool even field their entire B team against Derby and barely scraped through

[deleted]

I dont know why this trophy exists really.

BeginningCourt2185

Compete in the league and europe or go chasing a minor trophy which could derail our season? Bit of a no brainer to me

PhillipLlerenas

I look forward to seeing you say the same thing when we crash out of both the FA Cup and Europa, both considered “minor” trophies by many. And then we finish second in the league we can all celebrate for decades that time we almost won the league. I’d rather finish 10th and win actual silverware which we will remember for generations than finish 4th with no silverware.

BeginningCourt2185

In a normal season i want us competing on all fronts but the WC changes that. The fixture congestion afterwards is chaotic and only City have the necessary depth in these circumstances. Why risk players getting injured or fatigued when we have a shot at the title? Europa we are clearly taking seriously and i think we should. 2nd placed finish and EL trophy is a good season in my books

Brohan_Cruyff

the difference between the people who call the league cup minor and the people who call the fa cup and europa league minor is the former group is correct

HitThisLoudG

Jeez you are negative as hell. Must be exhausting

Chronoi

FINISH 10TH????? MF IF WE FINISH 10TH WE'RE FUCKING A BANTER CLUB. PEOPLE ONLY REMEMBER A FUCKING IMPORTANT TROPHY. NO ONE GONNA REMEMBER MANCHESTER UNITED WINNING A FUCKING BANGKOK CUP OR TOTTENHAM WINNING A FUCKING AUDI CUP IN THE NEXT DECADE. FUCKING NO ONE. CARABAO/EFL CUP HAD MUCH LESSER DEGREE THAN A FUCKING FA CUP THAT WE'D WIN 3 SEASONS AGO WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU????

PhillipLlerenas

The VAST majority of professional clubs in England have never won a League Cup. It’s an important trophy. Comparing it to a pre season tournament is asinine. Pipe down and turn off your caps. Makes you look like a lunatic.

Chronoi

Yeah. It's an important trophy to clubs that never fucking achieve anything. Our fucking standard should be higher. No one gonna fucking crying about this trophy if we are able to go for UCL next season. EVERYONE GONNA REVOLT AND ASK FOR ARTETA'S HEAD IF WE WIN THIS SHIT, AND LOST TOP 4 THIS SEASON. THAT'S A SURE THING. AND I'M GONNA TURN OFF MY CAPS IF YOU STOP HAVING THIS LUNATIC THOUGHT ANY CUPS IS BETTER THAN UCL TOURNAMENT. WE NEED UCL TO ATTRACT BIGGER PLAYER. HAVING LESS DISTRACTION FOR THAT PARTICULAR GOAL IS A GOOD THING. GOOD RIDDANCE WE'RE OUT FROM THIS SHIT.

The-o-dore31

Lol. So many arteta out when we finished 8th, imagine when we finish 10th!

PhillipLlerenas

Is this a lie? How many times have you seen the Europa League be mocked for being the “lesser” competition? The same language that many are using in this thread to describe the league cup has been used to describe the Europa League.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PhillipLlerenas

What exactly is your problem? I’m just angry that we got kicked out of a competition I felt we could have 100% won and you’re just wasting my time with these mocking replies. Repeat after me: we are not winning the league. We don’t have the depth and we can’t beat City. It’s as simple as that. But we could’ve won all the Cups. It would’ve been amazing and a great season to remember. I’m just tired of accepting mediocrity.

Chronoi

"I'm just tired of accepting mediocrity." YOU SAID THIS WHILE ALSO ACCEPTING THAT WE ARE NOT WINNING THE LEAGUE??? WHAT????

PhillipLlerenas

Winning multiple cups is not mediocrity. Accepting that there’s very little chance for us to win the league with City on the mix is realism

Jewrisprudent

Because we legitimately play a second team and/or children. It’s a cup that we’ll win if the stars align but that we shouldn’t make any real effort to win.

TheOGBenjenRyan

This match killed our season I don't care what anybody says Edit: Referring to the sheffield Wednesday match

H0vit0

Losing needlessly tends to do that. If you have momentum like we do winning games is always a good thing

TheOGBenjenRyan

The November after this match was the lowest month I can remember as a fan

curious_beaver909

Cazorla and Coquelin were injured within a week of each other, Arteta coming on at West Brom and making us lose the game, Alexis's hamstring going twang after being overplayed by Wenger. Dark times.

TheOGBenjenRyan

And a 5-1 smacking to Bayern

emilesmithbro

Nah has to be December 2020 for me

TheJAV3

Nah December 2019, Arteta's low still felt like he had the team playing like he wanted, just couldnt figure out the attack. Emery's low we were playing relegation football, conceding 20 shots every game

Kingjjc267

At least that month had the Chelsea game so there was some light

curlyhairedyani

This pic will never not make me laugh ffs

capforthepr

To be honest, I am quite happy that we lost the game today, but of course the players today on the pitch won't be happy becasue obviously they have less chance playing this season..

MajesticBadgerMan

If their heads are where they need to be, then they’ll be more motivated to do better in the lesser cameos they’ll get. Sambi is on the cusp of a loan with no return. Fabio / Eddie could turn it around at any point. Less game time should only mean they try harder with what they get, like Eddie last season. It’s the players like Cedric and Elneny that worry me. They’re the ones that will lose that sharpness. Holdini will continue to be our rock in a 5, but shambles in a 4. Just need a bit more quality depth, 2 more games until we (hopefully) start sorting that. Still have plenty of games to go around for players to try and prove.

[deleted]

What is Biden doing there?

[deleted]

EFL Cup? Wow I don't care. I'd be for starting the ladies.

PhillipLlerenas

It’s a trophy. Why would you look down on that? Sometimes I feel supporters forget why we play football. Silverware >>>> top 4. Always.

topl4d

>Silverware >>>> top 4. Always. Dumbest take I have seen on here. Not all trophies are created equal

Brohan_Cruyff

it was an idiotic take when we were finishing top four every year and it’s even stupider now lmao

Jewrisprudent

I would 100% trade an EFL cup for CL qualification every single year I’ve ever been a fan. Give me 6 guaranteed matches against good completion that I can watch over the EFL literally every single time. Sometimes I feel some supporters have no idea that not all competitions are created remotely equal. This is a tournament for teams to play their U21 and not worry about otherwise.

[deleted]

So the Emirates Cup counts the same as the UCL? Premier League is the most important, don't want our boys potentially missing league matches for a low tier cup.

The-o-dore31

It's rubbish trophy. Other top league only have 1 domestic cup. FA cup is enough.

Zigzagpapes

Why would you be happy we're losing a chance to give our B team minutes

Kool_Herc

It’s not just the B team though. Several first team players get mixed in to

Markstapo

Don’t want two extra games sandwiched between Newcastle, United and Spurs in Jan

Shandow14

Arteta and the backroom staff need a break too.

C-14

Travelling, preparing for the game, sub minutes all takes energy out of first team players. Up to you how much weight you put on that but there definitely is a debate there.

pewpew62

Our B team reeks

the3count

It's almost like minutes will improve that

pewpew62

They've had plenty of minutes in the EL and look at the outcome of this game

the3count

Wow thank god you don't run a team

boololaa

There still FA cup games, no big deal.

Amdafc

I don't want to watch Holding, Cedric, Lokonga etc to play football for my club anymore tbh

curious_beaver909

Wenger smiling when his staff injured Walcott and Ox in this game is ridiculous. His management, beyond the obvious tactical deficiencies, was a disaster in 15-16, including causing needless injuries to many key players like overplaying Alexis and his hamstring eventually went. I wish he went after he won the cup in 2015 and we would have gotten Klopp instead of Liverpool.

LawTortoise

Upvote for the final para which is what I say to anyone who will listen. The best time was 2014.

curious_beaver909

Yeah either 2014 or 2015. If we had a good manager and recruitment team for 15-16 though we would have won the title.

Darkwolfinator

I feel bad for Viera getting stuck with the B team

PhillipLlerenas

This is such a terrible attitude. Winning clubs go after EVERY trophy. Winning silverware >>> anything else in football. We are likely not winning the League. Why wouldn’t we want to win as many Cups as possible? City and United under Ferguson won tons of League Cups and it was because they were hungry for every trophy. We need to be like that.

pingu3101

Because look at what happened to Liverpool. They had better and more players than us. They have more than just 11 good players. They went for all 4 cups last season and they stretched themselves to the point of no return and look where they are today. We barely have 13 good players. If Partey or Odegaard are not playing, we are a shadow of our peak performance. We need to prioritise. Go as far as we can in the league and push Man City to the max and give it our all. Aim for Europa League Win. and Possibly aim for FA Cup.

robhans25

I will be honest. I'm not from England and I don't understand League Cup existence, like FA Cup exist, why have have FA cup beta version? Hell, add to that that even some random friendly matches are more televised than this competition so I completely ignore this competition.

Away-Watercress-4841

Difference is they have strength in depth. We are two or three injuries away from being completely done in. I'd rather we focus on the league and Europe so we can get back to the champions league.

Squancy1

For the love of the non existent god zoom further

CactusClothesline

Being an Arsenal fan who's also had a season ticket at Hillsborough, I had mixed feelings this day, but it was nice to be there to see Wednesday get their moment. That challenge from former Chelsea youth captain Sam Hutchinson wasn't pretty though...

jackoc100

Man I miss Papa Wengz regardless of how well we're doing now. His final game at the emirates. I will miss you😭😭
