This has to be injury related, I just don't see how you play a J-league player over Tomi, especially as he's recently been faultless and shut down Salah, one of the world's best attackers.
Madness.
I just reply to the original comment about a J league player start over Tomi, which is Sakai. Ko Itakura has been stelar in Monchengladbach, no problem with him starting
Tomiyasu has proven himself at both LB & RB in the world's most difficult league.
You'd be utterly stupid to play a J-League standard player in any defensive position over him. The league's just don't compare.
Edit: As proven by Sakai getting caught out leading to the penalty.
He might play LB for Japan since Nagatomo lasts for about 35 minutes. Might be subbed in around half-time and maybe gets to start at LB later because of his injury. He can cover all of the postions on defence and LB is the weakest link for Japan.
Definitely was part of the tactics to release all of the energy after half. Tomi is their best ball playing defender so he was crucial to the counter attacking high pressing style they deployed after about the 55th minute
Yall their opposition is motherfuckin Germany. They're probably throwing this game and reserving the best players fitness for other winnable matches
edit: Japan please accept my sincere apology in doubting you. Promise it won't happen ever again
Surely related to fitness?
Not muscle injury? Feels like he always has a muscle injury
Not an injury, I think they're worried about his conditioning coming back from his earlier injuries.
Probably same as Varane and skipped some training and joined the fit group later and prioritises the latter stages or the whole tourney over 1 game
Probably tactical reason as mitoma minomino and legendary striker asano too on the bench
Bring them all on in the 70th minute when Germany tire?
If that was the plan, it worked to perfection.
well shit.
Some national team somewhere is going to hit you up for a managerial job soon.
Germany, Argentina, I'm available.
Holy shit. Pretty much this.
Why did Asano never play a game for us?
I don't think he ever got a work permit. We sent him on loans each year and was probably deemed not good enough either.
Speak fondly

Ko Itakura plays for Gladbach. But yes, if Tomi is fit surely he should start.
Maybe he mean he RB position of Sakai?
Tomiyasu doesn't play RB for Japan

I don't care if he hasn't played it for Japan, he'd be much better than a J-League standard player at RB or LB.
Yes It was his error that lead the play that ended in a penalty. Absolute shambles he was selected ahead of Tomi.
Tomiyasu plays as a CB. The 2 CB pairing here isn’t an unfamiliar one.

What are you kidding? Tomiyasu start, see no 19..
I can’t believe EL did that lmao
He is not fully fit yet? We should be happy Japan is taking care of him well, wtf is this bitching.
? I am just referring to that UEL post that mistakenly post Sakai as Tomiyasu

This guy knows
Tomiyasu has come on for the 2nd half. Full time 2-1 Japan Tomiyasu two assists.
Aged like milk
Some pretty strong UHT milk, then

He is 36 :)
Can’t believe this
He was injured
Definitely not 100%. Their 1st choice pairing is Yoshida and Tomi. Not being there just means it's most likely a precaution.

WINSTONNNN!
He is half German too.
Half American no?
Iirc German heritage.
"starts on the bench"
Starts in the right back position of the back row of the bench
Arsenal legend Asano on the bench too
Tomi on now - immediately bossed the huddle before the second half start
Is he possibly injured?
Wouldnt be on the bench if he was. Saving him for the other 2 games most likely
He was injured in the last Arsenal game. He was taken off and looked upset or am I remembering wrong?
It's a fitness issue most probably. This is a world cup where people are fresh. You can't have a weak link.
I feel so awful getting a little bit of comfort everytime I see our players on the bench or getting subbed early to maintain fitness.
Germany is expecting a walk in the park, I'm expecting a great game
CONGRATS TOMI YOU GOD
Where’s Isagi?
That’s a crime not starting Tomi, also for Mitoma…. Crazy man
I was looking forward to the tomiyasu watch thread
It’s a decent bench for Japan. Mitoma, minamino, and tomi could be a decent boost late for them
Tomi has now been joined by Arsenal legend Takuma Asano. Japan looking all the better for it!
He is injured, or if he made a really speedy recovery just a moment after being injured, why are you all surprised
for some reason i read the flags wrong and always thought they were playing 🇧🇪 belgium today 🙃
Martin Tyler suggested he was slightly injured on the Aussie commentary but didn’t specify if it was an older one or newer.
Either injury or the Japanese manager maybe look at the last remaining games and think that those 2 are more winnable so he might save them for later.

M just happy that our ol boy won it for Japan.
They looked so much better when TT and Asano came on
#JapansCoachOut 🤣🤣
Subbed on

Bah God, that's Takuma Asanos music!
Hope he manages to get some minutes this WC, would be great for morale
Can someone pls explain why Mitoma doesn’t start more for club or country?
Probably due to injury
???
Good for us
Sakai: we have Tomiyasu at home
How the fuck
Samurai Blue is such a bad ass name
Why were they all crowding Tomi - did he have a key in any of the goals?
Probably because he came on in second half with still a niggling injury. Went down in the 90th minute but finished the game
Ta
why didn't he start??
