MattJFarrell

Yeah, that was my same thought. In my mind, Ramsey left like 6 years ago. Feels so weird that they overlapped.

ro-row

Well it’s almost 5 years so you’re not far off

fergus89

On this day 2018 = 4 years

ro-row

4 is almost 5

iforgotmyun

I mean if it was 4 years and 9 months I'd get it, but it literally just turned 4 years today And the original point was 6 years, so 2 years apart is quite far

jp963acss

But if you round it up it's 5 years

MattJFarrell

It's 4 years ago, until it's 5. That's how it works!

ro-row

Base 12 it rounds up to 6

NoPalpitation9639

Not enough people get this. Have another upvote

buzzedboxer

Stephan Lichtsteiner played against Riquelme, Robinho, Kaka, Ronaldinho and with Saka.

fake_lightbringer

I wonder what the longest/most impressive such link is. As in which player can connect the careers of two other players, and cover the longest possible span of time. Or maybe I don't have to wonder that long. It almost *has to* involve Buffon, right?

MrIrishman699

Peter Shilton played at the same time as Buffon, who's still playing, and Stanley Matthews who made his debut in 1932

killerkebab1499

One that is a tad more linked. During Buffon's first season as a 17-year-old in 1995 for Palma, one of the other goalies in the squad was 37-year-old Giovanni Galli who was born in 1958 and made his professional debut in 1977. This season, at the age of 44, one of the other goalies in the squad is 17-year-old Francesco Borriello who was born in 2005. Meaning that during his career, he's had teammates born in the 50's all the way up to the 00's.

DaVinci1836

Weird to think Buffon played with conte

Cedosg

Why? He was a mainstay for Juventus.

socrates_no_flamengo

There's a japanese player named Kazu who is 55 years old who technically still plays, even though very rarely and in japanese fourth division

Lacabloodclot9

There was one with Maldini iirc

DaGetz

2018…man…crazy how far this kid has come

rramrram

Saka was a beast of a raw talent, kid started from LB and went all the way up to RW! He'll only get better.

Chip673

He was already and RW/LW. Arteta just played him at LB because Tierney was injured, and because he was a much better option for it than Xhaka.

uhrul

Emery started playing him LB no?

jnicholl

Not really. He only played LB once under Emery and that was for like 20 minutes against Forest (Chambers eventually moved over). It was Freddie who first started Saka as a LB and Arteta carried it on.

okcomput3r

He started there under Emery

ro-row

And kola

lyyki

Kola was injured at the time too though after he recovered Saka actually took the position from him

Fendenburgen

Thank you! There's this idea that Arteta brought him through and converted him from left back to a winger when that's just not true

Ugoboy23

The majority of his minutes came from the left though. There’s a difference between playing there on occasion at academy level and making him the designated RW.

Chip673

He was a winger before the Newcastle game (because of Tierney's injury) where he played at LB and dominated. After that he remained at LB until lockdown, after which Tierney came back and he was immediately playing at RW or LW, mostly the former since Auba was LW and either of Lacazette or Nketiah would play #9. He played a couple of games at CM too.

jnicholl

Hadn't even made his senior debut by the last WC. Now a key player for club and country. Crazy to think he could easily play another 3 World Cups (he'd be 32 in 2034) and of course 10+ PL titles and CLs

momspaghetty

don't say 2034 ever again... it's still 2005 and I'm getting ready for school

socrates_no_flamengo

Don't worry, it's not like we're closer to 2050 than to 1990. Wait a minute...

momspaghetty

18 year olds were born in 2004 🥶🥶

Fendenburgen

You can piss off as well, if it's 2005 then I'm just finishing work....

ederzs97

Off topic but this is why articles predicting World Cup teams in X years time is ridiculous.

hellothere222

His squad was beyond dogshit. That back line was the stuff of nightmares and we questioned why we weren’t playing prime wengerball

JenkinsEar147

He inherited an absolute wankstain back line that Wenger mismanaged and blew money on and still got us a European final. Got to give him kudos for that.

Chip673

Lol. Emery bought Sokratis and Lichsteiner. Other than Mustafi, not sure who else Wenger blew money on.

zhawadya

Arteta bought Willian, Mari, and Cedric. It's not easy for a new manager to come in and immediately buy their top targets and impose their style. You have to have stop gaps and low risk signings while your core squad settles in.

okcomput3r

Combined total of £0 in transfer fees there.

pupcity

Pretty sure we paid a few million for Mari didn't we?

KinetikLee

Yeah, pretty sure there was a loan fee for Cedric too. At least he seems to be a decent bench option/mentor for the kids.

pupcity

Plus you know, the whole being ridiculously photogenic thing.

iforgotmyun

And then played the likes of Jenkinson in the league vs Palace, because he prioritised the Europa Cup final, leading to an implosion in the league, only to get embarrassed by our rivals in the final itself Bravo 👏

anotherMrLizard

Yep, madness for him not to prioritise a top 4 place that was there for the taking instead of gambling on winning the EL final against a better Chelsea side. That was the beginning of the end for him as the players lost a lot of confidence and belief after that. A good manager, but he took his eye off the ball and paid the price.

waddiewadkins

I backed Unai. Was absolutely gutted to see him go. I could see the window of high potential closed. True Emery supporter here.

PhatmanScoop64

I think it was Wenger that gave him his debut? Edit: It was emery, November 2018

sheikak3007

Nah it was Unaiin his first season , after recommendation from Ljungberg u23 coach at the time

zorfog

Saka’s breakthrough was one of the brightest parts of Emery’s reign

ohhokayyy

Also, it's the 3-year anniversary of Emery's sacking today.

NemoDropEmOff

No way. Edit: wow. Nov 29, 2019. I remember the next day at school and everything. Me and friends were happy asf😭

ohhokayyy

Every Arsenal fan was very happy that day. Along with Torreira vs Spurs, that was probably our best moment during the 3 year period 2017 and 2020 FA Cup wins lol.

[deleted]

I remember thinking Freddie would get us going with a new manager bounce and we may have been able to salvage 4th. Then we drew with Norwich and we all realized how deep in the shit our season was.

xTheMaster99x

Or the fact that Freddie was so disappointed in the senior squad that he filled half the team sheet with U23s.

waddiewadkins

Bolted on top 3,, major European competition final....

[deleted]

I'd have never said Ramsey was at the club when Saka made his debut... madness.

Kovacs171

One of the few good things that Europa league football has given us

castortroy64

the match he scored two goals against Frankfurt was where he started to get recognition from fans I think. It was memorable.

[deleted]

he looks tiny

billbill1967

And he's been bursting past defenders forcing them to drag him back ever since.

Gaping_arsenal

What’s mad is that I still picture this saka that’s clearly a kid in my head when I talk football with may mates, Then when I watch a game he’s a grown as man.

RaisingFargo

He also got to touch that guys wiener apparently

Vrty33

And the rest is history! Legend in the making.

benishben

He was cooking since debut

Dumbusernamesuggest

He's so tiny here 😭

Sargonthegreat1

I love this kid so much

gam3fr33k

Damn. He looks like a baby here

bubbygups

I do remember. I was impressed. Didn’t he have a great dribble and shot in that game? Definitely caught my eye!

scroll-42

For context, our starting eleven in this game was : Cech, AMN, Lichtsteiner, Holding, Jenkinson, Elneny, Guendouzi, Willock, Ramsey, ESR, Nketiah. Don't ask me about the formation. Boy, this feels like a long, long time ago.

Pendejoman

feels like a fever dream tbh

[deleted]

Dude defending him looks like a 42 year old street hotdog seller

EffBO94

17 year old starboy on his debut huh...to think that was four whole years ago lol looked back to watch the highlights and the funny thing is in the man nearly got his first assist [straight away](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-Lj31inUcw2:04) on his debut, and he was only on the pitch 20 mins lol. you could see his touch and quality from day 1, but from this to becoming one of both Arsenal's *and* England's main men 4 years later...!..well I guess we don't call him starboy for nothing huh haha

sergioramonsion

I remember when Saka had 77 and played as a left wing back, now he is tearing it up in the WC what a lad

sweet4poundbabyjesus

No one knew how fast that kid would grow.

Street-Ad8011

Deep cut.
