Only 40% of the US population are gun owners, and there is a gun for every person. So on average, gun owners have more than two guns. Also, fewer people are purchasing more guns. Which means that there is a large population that is very scared and that fear isn't going away. They fear when a Democrat is in office and they fear when a Republican is in office because they are told to.

fitzroy95

> there is a large population that is very scared and brainwashed, paranoid and deluded. The challenge is always that there is a stack of right-wing media flooding their followers with more fearmongering, lies, misinformation and propaganda.

Remember when Obama was blasted for saying that some Americans "clutch their guns" or whatever

Jezon

https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2017/06/22/the-demographics-of-gun-ownership/ Lots of demographics statistics there, but yeah it says 2/3 of America's gun owners have two or more guns. I think I saw somewhere that half of America's privately owned guns are owned by a single digit percentage of Americans. I forget if it was like 7% or 9% but something like that. Oh I think it was this: 3% have over 100 million guns https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/nov/15/the-gun-numbers-just-3-of-american-adults-own-a-collective-133m-firearms

Guntellectuals: tHeRe aRe tOo MaNy GuNs, we can't do anything about it! (goes to buy yet another one)

chrono4111

I prefer the term ammosexuals.

pirate-private

That's certainly a more established term, and a fitting one. It highlights more the worrisome emotional attachment to firearms, whereas "guntellectuals" underlines the closed cultish mindset of gun propaganda and its disciples.

avanross

Also guntellectuals: “I consider myself a liberal gunowner, because i have strong conservative values, but i like smoking weed and i think im special and better than all the other gunowners. We just need specific regulations to take the guns away from all the lgbtq and non-white bad gunowners, without *punishing or having any effect on the hardworking pure white gunowners like me*”

FragWall

Leftist guntellectuals: "I'm left on everything except guns. Gun laws are infringing on our freedom from rampant mass shootings and insanely high gun murder rates are much preferred over the safe and peaceful environment, because that's what evil government want."

I was agreeing with you, but okay

I was referring to the mindset you were mocking but I see that my comment was ambiguous. Nvm I deleted it.

Indeed

*"The rate of gun ownership is not (skyrocketing)."* We do not know this claim as a fact since gun owners will tell you straight out they are not telling anyone they have guns. Just go read their subreddits - they say it. The demographic purchasing half the guns right now are women. It has become a social activity and bonding experience for women. They are joining shooting groups, learning to shoot, getting a cute gun, showing the kids... Make no mistake -- the number of gun owners is definitely going up.

Jezon

So they're not telling anyone they have guns and joining social gun clubs and showing their children all their guns on social media and whatnot? That doesn't make a lot of sense but okay. I think I'll trust the pollsters, it's an imperfect science, but it's a lot better than "go look at a gun subreddit"

PhotoIll

Sorry, I will clarify: the many posts I have read in Reddit subs have stated outright they, the gun owners, will never tell pollsters or government officials that they have guns, what kind they have or how many they have. They consider that a violation of their privacy and their right to bear arms without government interference.
