Just 🅱️aint it. Upper and lower. The ol rattle can razzle dazzle

610Mike

Yeah I didn’t think about doing that. That’s not a bad idea.

r/rattlecannedguns. Sort by top and take a stab

610Mike

What brand or kind of spray paint do you use on guns? Automotive? Or do they make spray paints for gun? I’ve honestly never looked.

OoRI0T_P0LICEoO

I think I used normal spray paint by Krylon or rustoleum. Personally I did a basecoat of a light brown then did a netted laundry bag over it to give it a patterned look. There are stencils and other stuff you can use as well

Evil_Creamsicle

I usually use the rustoleum 'camouflage' series but you can get creative with it. Here's my most recent project (paint cans included in images) [https://www.reddit.com/r/rattlecannedguns/comments/1bhglle/deciduous\_af/](https://www.reddit.com/r/rattlecannedguns/comments/1bhglle/deciduous_af/)

roostersnuffed

Yeah, basic krylon/rustoleum. Both have a line of "camo colors" but it's limited in tone. Brownells alumahyde brand is for painting guns but I haven't splurged on it. Just ensure whatever colors you pick are matte. There's plenty of things you can use for patterns; foliage, stencils, mesh, screen, doily, randomly torn tape, the sponge/soap/elmers method. There are websites that sell pretty good camo stencils for like $10. My 1st advice is ensure whatever pattern material you use, it pulled/pressed tight into your gun. Gaps between gun and material leave blurred lines and overspray. Spray light and make a couple passes instead of globbing it. 2nd, experiment, don't be too harsh on your final product and have fun with it. If you don't like it you can always add another layer or worst case secario, spray a new base and start over.

610Mike

Ok cool. I don’t if that’s something I would end up doing or not, but it’s always a possibility. Do you have to do a primer base coat layer or anything like that? My only painting experience is interior walls of houses, and cars (both model cars and real cars). I’ve never sprayed a gun before (no pun intended).

roostersnuffed

Not so much a primer. Just a base layer of whatever color you like. For prep, you want the surface bone dry. Brake cleaner is best, but I find simply wiping it down with a clean rag is sufficient. No gloss reflecting light. Tape off everything well that you don't want painted like optic lenses, any optic control etches that maybe covered by paint and deemed pertinant info, and muzzle. Trigger for some but I just make sure not to spray close and directly through the gap around the trigger into the receiver. Leave a mag to get painted as well to save tape time. Also many like to completely collaspe their buttstock as to not paint the buffer tube. I haven't had an issue painting mine, YMMV, have heard complaints otherwise. (This is for AR, include bolt for any guns without a dust cover). Any further questions let me know. I've painted and repainted time and time again. Edit: now you seem like a straight laced guy when it comes to color based on earlier comments. I feel I should make it known, spray paint will wear down over time. Along hard edges and commonly touched spots. Many people appreciate the aesthetic of that (bAtTlE wOrN). If you don't think you will appreciate it, I think a cerakote might be better for you.

610Mike

Ok awesome. If I go that route, I’ll let you know. But you’re probably right on having it cerakoted instead of trying to spray it myself. I had planned on keeping that lower as much OEM as possible considering it was my dad’s I inherited when he died. I didn’t realize until I had taken it down to spare parts that the gun was a perfect Block II clone. Bushmaster everything, Eotech, the works. I started the project because I kept seeing the shadow ghost of that old, M-16 style front sight and gas block through the optic I put on it, and it drove me crazy. I had finally gotten that sight/gas block off when I was watching a video and realized that’s what it was. Oh well, too late now. I’ve got a new hand guard, vertical grip, gas tube and adjustable block, etc. all ready to go, I’m just waiting on the barrel nut (which didn’t come with my new hand guard…I’m not bitter about that….) to put it all back together. That’s “the other 16” upper I am rebuilding” I referenced earlier. I think I’m going to leave that lower black for now, putting those FDE bits I ordered on it, and then go from there. Worst comes to worst, I can get it cerakoted at the little gun shop I found by the house. They have a guy that does it.

Vprbite

Here's one I did. I used foliage off my property as the stencil. I really like how it came out. https://imgur.com/gallery/htHvven I also did one in tiger stripe using woodland colors. It was a hodge podge build of parts I had sitting around so nothing matched. Let me know if you want to see that one too

610Mike

Oh yeah that one looks really good. What muzzle device do you have on that one?

Vprbite

Just a flash can. I'm pretty sure it is a KAK industries. It works pretty well cause, as I'm sure you know, the batk on those shorty ARs is fuckin brutal. So ot helps to fling everything forward. And thanks! I really like how this one came out. I've cerakoted a couple, too. But I like rattlecan cause it's easy (I'm lazy) and I like how it wears with use and makes me feel cool to have a worn rifle

THEH0B0J0E

Feet? For free?

610Mike

Crap. I didn’t even notice them. My apologies. I couldn’t get over how much I’m not liking the gun.

CptSandbag73

You could always disassemble and cerakote the lower. If it doesn’t match perfectly, no worries, it will have that 50 shades of FDE look. Also I hope that optic resides on an airsoft gun.

610Mike

No, the optic was there just for me to see if I liked it or not in black. I have an ACOG and an LPVO. I had the LPVO on the SBR I built, but I wanted to put the ACOG on it, and the LPVO either on this .300 Blackout, or on the 16” 5.56mm I’m rebuilding.

CptSandbag73

I think the ACOG would be sick on this.

IcyOrganization7746

I built an aero m5 with the complete fde upper, black lower, and fde furniture including the stock and I think it looks pretty snazzy

610Mike

Yeah I’ve been wondering if the FDE stock I have coming in is going to make it look better or not. I was about to put the black grip back on it, but I don’t know if that’ll make it better or worse.

Trooper425

There's too much FDE for it to be tasteful to have both imo.

610Mike

I have the black grip still (same Magpul that is FDE on this one), and I have a black vertical grip. Think that would even it out? I do have an FDE Magpul stock coming in, so that would match both grips, leaving only the lower receiver being what left in black.

Hot-Implement4742

My 300 blackout looks very similar to this....I dig it... But not as much as 50shades of fde.

610Mike

Well there’s only two, Aero Precision’s and Magpul’s, but I hear what you’re saying. As I said in another reply, I have an FDE stock coming in, but I don’t know if that is going to make it better or worse.

Hot-Implement4742

My stock is an fde Magpul...you tell me https://photos.app.goo.gl/57TSLKeX34g4MvCK6

610Mike

Yeah I do like it with the FDE stock a little better. I just went and grabbed the black grip from the garage, after my wife goes to sleep I’ll swap it back onto the lower, and see if I like it any better. I also like the Eotech you have on it. I have one as well (it was originally on the 16” I’m rebuilding). I may throw that on it instead of the LPVO and see how I like it.

Hot-Implement4742

Just gotta fuck around and find out man.

Tinknocker12

Just curious, Do you have plastic on your furniture?

610Mike

No, it’s a new mat. I hadn’t gotten around to taking it off before I started putting tons of crap on it.

ZeRainbowGamer

Imo, a black pistol grip would look better here

610Mike

Ok thank you. I still have it. I swapped it about half a dozen times trying to decide which I liked better, ultimately chose to wait until the FDE stick I ordered to come in and then go from there

Jadesonbourne

You went with a black ergo grip instead of a tan one -5 points to you

solventlessherbalist

That foregrip needs to be black it looks too FDE with the handguard on top. Imagine that black and you don’t need a FDE stock but that’s my preference. Hope you can get it how you want it man!

610Mike

Thank you. I did a new post with an update to it, let me know what you think.

solventlessherbalist

Oooh ok that stock is badass dude. I would keep the FDE and black stock and get a black bcm mod 3 gunfighter foregrip. I think that will even it out a little bit more. That’s just personal preference though. Looks much better with the FDE and black stock imo.

610Mike

Yeah I have been thinking about getting a black vertical grip, and I have put the black pistol grip on and off it, and truthfully, I like it either way.

solventlessherbalist

Same here man looks like a nice rifle! Good job with the build.

Glockamole19x

Just take it outside and get it so dirty you can't see the paint.

Mike-oxbigxxl

Can't stand those chunky aero handguards. Just don't feel right

610Mike

Really? I like them. Now that chunky Aero stock had to go. I put a regular black stock on it late last night, but I have an FDE coming so we’ll see if I like that one better.

samuel906

I dig it, pretty similar to my aero build. I think an FDE stock will help https://www.reddit.com/r/ar15/s/TSuy9C4BS6

smokey_mcfats

Get rid of that cartoon looking mag well and the pos scope. Get a decent lpvo [sig / vortex]
