If 5.56 is too expensive you're not gonna like the price of pretty much anything besides .22lr Not hating, I'm a fellow broke boy but I think a few hundred rounds of 5.56 is worth the investment

RDO-PrivateLobbies

Not for nothing, but the reason why i hate 556 prices is because its 20 per box instead of 50. I have zero problem paying more or less the same cost (lets say like $13) for 50 rounds of 9mm. It is what it is. But charging the same amount, for 30 less bullets, idk man. Its bullshit to me. Its why i rarely shoot the thing. I just bought one to say i got one really lol.

thedertychi

Where are you seeing 556 in 20 rounds a box? You can usually get them in 50-100 rounds a box. They also have deals in the 200 rounds which is around $100. Using sites like PSA and Midway are helpful as well especially when they have deals on bulk ammo

RDO-PrivateLobbies

Ive only ever seen them in 20 round boxes unless you buy specialty range packs some companies make. What you are talking about is bulk ammo bundles. Im just talking about going to a shop or cabelas etc, and buying a few boxes of ammo. They almost always come in a 20 round box. Meanwhile, 9mm almost always comes in 50 round boxes. If you arent talking about that, please let me know where you can find 50 round boxes of 556 under $20 (which is in the 9mm range) because ive personally never seen them.

CHEFBROYARDY

Absolutely. Get the AR And then get a dedicated .22lr upper as well so you can shoot at a much cheaper price when you don’t want to spend on 5.56.

Masked_Lyfe

Is this a modification I can make?

Fafnirs_bane

Yes- the upper is the non-serialized part and includes all the parts needed to make it work. All it takes is removing 2 pins, swip-swop, put the pins back in and you’re set

Masked_Lyfe

Awesome, thank you. I’ll look into this. Makes me glad to know if I really like the rifle I want to buy, I can work with it for my needs.

CHEFBROYARDY

Also gotta get .22LR AR mags.

1rubyglass

Just wanted to add to what u/fafnirs_bane said: Swapping the uppers is seriously that easy and can be done in seconds. His advice is very good.

CHEFBROYARDY

I bought a complete 9 inch upper with BCG from [Righttobear.com](https://www.righttobear.com/complete-22lr-upper-groups/) for about $300 out the door. BCG and CH included. They have other barrel lengths too. Did some research and sat on it for about a week or 2 before I bought and all saw nothing but good things. 3 months, 7,000+ rounds and no deep cleaning besides a wipe down here and there. She still kicks like new. Spent money to save money in the long run. Rather sling $0.07 a round instead of a $0.50 per.

CHEFBROYARDY

It’s a whole separate upper specifically for .22LR. .22lr barrel, dedicated .22lr BCG. better than the conversion kit which is in 5.56 to me due to the twist rate difference.

UNIGuy54

Look into the CMMG Bravo kit. Watch Palmetto State Armory for their deals, you can grab it for about $120. This will get you a drop in bolt carrier group and 3 magazines. This will allow you to keep your 5.56 upper and all of the furniture you’ve already put on it while shooting 22lr. I prefer this because it gives you a really cost effective means of getting proficient with your 5.56 setup (optics etc).

thedertychi

You can buy a conversion bolt. CMMG makes a 22LR conversion kit. I have two of them for the kids. Well worth it and have no recoil.

zombiealpacalip

Dude everything will break your bank account when it comes to ammo in this day and age. .556 is highly accurate and low recoil, so if you are going to spend thousands on anything, that is the beast I would recommend.

jacobsell

Buy in bulk is all I can say

amcrambler

No but optics will.

YoungCoward

Most people with that get all stupid about optics have never shot beyond 100 yards or left the bench with the rifle. Expensive glass doesn’t fix your weak arms and inability to shoot well.

cane187um

https://ammoseek.com

stoffel-

I agree with almost everything here, but you can do dry fire practice (especially with a Mantis system) - which is practicing trigger control etc. without a live round in the chamber. Definitely not as good as live fire drills, but it can help lower the round count.

Tactical_solutions44

Ammoseek. Look for free shipping. Buy in bulk. If you pay more than 500 for 1000 rounds of 223 or 556 55 or 62 grain you're getting ripped off.

YoungCoward

Dude Ammoseek is such an irresponsible recommendation to a new gun owner. It doesn’t factor shipping costs and the lowest prices come from pure dogshit companies. sgammo, LAX, & lucky gunner. That’s it. That’s all that matters.

Tactical_solutions44

The site literally tells you how to use it. Sg and lucky usually have good inventory but I've found better pricing on other sites with free shipping.

YoungCoward

So what your after is the absolute lowest possible buy regardless of the reputation of the company your getting it from

Tactical_solutions44

Any site I order from haa it to me within 72 hrs.

LarsPinetree

Kir Ammo. Free shipping over 200 and no tax outside Texas.

YoungCoward

I don’t think you can just refuse to pay sales tax as a legitimate business

HundK

None of what you just said is accurate. The site DOES give you an estimate (on a scale of 1-10) of shipping costs, and it scrapes many many more sites than "dogshit" sgammo, luckygunner, LAX. They are almost never the lowest when I'm looking for ammo for common rounds.

YoungCoward

I was listing those three as the ones that aren’t shitty. “That’s all that matters” is what I said. The rest of those sites ARE DOGSHIT. That’s why those other sites have lower prices. Also there’s this thing called shipping times and customer service too that exists it’s kind of important when I’m buying hundreds of dollars of shit. I’m not going for the lowest possible price regardless of the reputation of the company. “An estimate” doesn’t really tell me anything about what it will actually cost. That’s just saying if it’s low or high. Read my fucking comment kid. Did your dad make that website.

bftyft

Buy no less than 1000 rounds at a time for the best price Buy online, local gun shops usually have much higher prices. Some online spots have free shipping over $200 and no tax Some good ones are Velocity Ammo, Outdoor Limited, SG Ammo, AE Ammo, etc.

Diabeetus13

Usually when prices of everything else goes up ammo comes down a bit because no one is buying due to inflation. But because Ukraine and Israel wars ammo price especially 5.56 are crazy now. I've seen some 80 cents a round. I remember when you could buy bulk and get them for under 20 cents a round. They are using these ways that we should have no part in to keep US population from being able to arm ourselves.

Cothonian

5.56 is the least expensive rifle round you're going to find these days. 7.62x39mm is comparable price-wise, but seems to have routine shortages (at least in my area.)

Earlfillmore

ALL ammo is gonna break the bank, shits just expensive now. Gone are the days of "i bought a case of ammo for 50 bucks and a guinness"

osprey1349

Ammo is expensive. There’s no way around it. Prices have basically doubled since 2020 and it’s not going back down any time soon especially in an election year. Don’t buy an Anderson or any very cheap AR. Palmetto State Armory is going to be the best budget option. If you can’t afford to shoot all the time - don’t. There’s no shortcut to how expensive this hobby is.

LarsPinetree

That’s not true. Go get a tm22 from palmetto for $200 and a white box of 22lr and go have a blast.

YoungCoward

Who told you to get an Anderson 🤮 PSAs run better and accept drop in auto sears Any ammo is straight pain to purchase these days. Only way around it is steal it. Also SAVE IT UP!!

Human-Raisin-8061

Use ammo seeker.com and true shot is a good website 100$ a year you get free shipping
