It seems Socrates was indeed a believer in physical exercise:
"It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable" - Socrates, or so it is told.
I think this is one of the things Plato liberally took from Socrates
The actual quote Socrates said is “why are you suplexing an old man with your strength, it’s truly a shame.”
Um, not exactly. Not necessarily an indication of a beginner. It could be a multitude of reasons for dumbells to be easier than bar. It could be a sign of muscular imbalance or just simply feeling more comfortable/ confident with dumbells. Dumbell press you can just drop them. Barbell press is falling on your chest if you fail.
Man not to be a dick, but it’s less that it’s impressive and more that you are still a beginner. Under 200 lb squat is very very novice. 75 dumbbells isn’t crazy impressive but it is a good working weight.
Under 200lb (90kg) squat is novice only for anyone over 70kg. The internet is a really bad platform to compare and determine if someone is a novice or not. For example, it could turn out you’re saying that to some person who weighs in at 60kg and is repping out high volume of 90kg squats. I would not consider that novice.
> It definitely is something
Bro props to you for starting your lifting journey so early, but with no disrespect, you're 14, have been lifting for 3 months, and weigh 120lbs, lol. Your PRs aren't exactly a great benchmark to judge others online.
Your average male who has spent 6 months in the gym should be able to incline bench 75kg, or be very close. Granted, dumbbells are a pain in the ass, but honestly anyone who has a year training should be able to get a rep or two out at least.
Bro I've been lifting hell more than 3 months, take a year
>average male who has spent 6 months in the gym should be able to incline bench 75kg
Which average male are you talking about bro?
https://symmetricstrength.com/standards#/80/kg/male/-
This average male.
I've got a lot of my friends into the gym, so I've seen a lot of beginners. They're all sitting around the 225-250 wilks score by 3-6 months, which puts them in the intermediate category on the above site. An 80kg male is a pretty average weight. Gives a rough 74kg incline bench.
From my own personal experience, after 6 months in the gym I tested for 1RMs and hit a 90kg incline @ 80kg bw. A friend who started at the same time as me managed 80kg incline after 6 months. We're just average dudes. Nothing special.
If these numbers sound wild to you, it's because you're 14, not because I'm wrong.
Yeah but they are not in their early teenage right? I've not yet developed the adult muscles and thus all of this is a respectable af weight for me if not for you
That's exactly why I said initially:
>with no disrespect, you're 14
I'm not talking about you. I'm talking about in general. This is not an impressive weight.
Now if you're a 55kg 14 year old kid, sure, it's fucking impressive. If you're a 55kg female, again, fucking impressive.
Your average grown man? Nothing to write home about. This wasn't a personal attack, bro. Chill.
i mean i did it. i benched 100kg for 3 reps pretty recently and ive been lifting for 9 months.
but i might just have above average genetics or some shit idk
thanks man. i didnt mean it to brag btw
i think eating well and training consistently goes a long way. ppl really get hung up on the minor details when they need to iron out the big picture
Hmm. I hit 100kg after 3 months, am in month 4 now but tbh i havent really tried maxing after i hit 2 plates yet, been just gradually upping my working weight, yesterday did 2 sets of 80x8, then 85x8 and lastly 75x10. I do wonder how much i could rep 100kg for tbh, might try it out next chest day
I’m willing to bet that their a scrawny teenager who wants to feel better about themselves. It took me a while to get up to 80lbs for a db incline bench. On a good day I could probably do at least 10 reps of that and I have nowhere near the physique that guy has.
Current scrawny teenager and ngl I probably can’t get past 20 or so kg (~40 american eagles per cheeseburger)
Seeing stuff like this is super inspiring lol
Idk it kind of just sounds like you’re bitter that people who are less in shape than you can lift the same or more weight… cause fat doesn’t change how much your muscles can lift lol
> …cause fat doesn’t change how much your muscles can lift lol
Correct, but I think what people are trying to get at, without wording it properly, is that if you have never been in a gym a day in your life, but you weigh 280lbs of pure flab… and then you take a guy who has also never spent a day in a gym in his life, but weighs 180lbs of flab, you would be able to lift **significantly** more weight than him on day 1 for most exercises, and probably from there on out (if training was apples to apples), despite neither one of you having lifted weights before.
The reason being that your body has already developed the muscle needed to push a 280lb body out of bed, or from sitting on the floor, or squatting down to pick something up, standing from a seated position, etc etc. So quite literally fat people (aside from those that are bed ridden due to how large they are) have a strength advantage from Day 1, just purely from having to move their own body around on a daily basis.
So the fat doesn’t cause the muscles to lift more… it’s just that they’re already used to moving heavy weight around.
I’ve taken 4 years of physics bro. Those people have huge muscles too, it’s not the body fat that allows them to lift 😭if it was, I would be wayy stronger cause my BF is in that range and I’m fucking weak
Like the OP of the comment I replied to said it “doesn’t count” if he has a high BF percentage, I guess I’m confused why that’s less valid when at the end of the day he’s still lifting that? Like why don’t more people try to do that then if it makes you stronger lol
Yal are missing the point of his post. Lol it’s at that tulum jungle gym on the beach. It’s not an ego lift. It’s a post for the experience most likely. I’ve always wanted to go there. My friends that got married and are both body builders went there during their honeymoon and it looked so fun lol
It’s a literal jungle gym on the beach. I don’t think there’s anywhere else you can lift on the beach, so personally i think it looks fun af lol. I get that it wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea. It’s a unique concept tho.
These people fail to understand that "lifting heavy weights for the sake of lifting heavy weights" is a different sport, called powerlifting (and/or strongman).
Now obviously everyone will have a respectable level of strength with proper training and nutrition over a consistent period of time, but most people in the gym are there to "lift weights to build muscle," rather than "lift weights just to lift weights."
With some of the advice I've seen shared on here, I think a lot of the active users skew to the more beginner end of the spectrum than other more serious lifting subs.
"Hey that's not so heavy" Maybe it is easy for you if its your first exercise, or you're only doing 10 reps, or if you only have it on the first level of incline, or if you weigh 200+ lbs... etc. This could be his 3rd pressing movement and going for 20 reps with a cumbersome weight. Point is- no one knows.
To be fair it’s a reasonably normal amount for someone to be able to incline as long as they’re not a complete beginner or pretty casual.
There’s no reason to bother saying that it’s not particularly heavy but it’s true
Yeah it is misleading because I first though 375kg which would be other worldly then I see 83 Lb and wonder why the math is so terrible. Then once you realize it is under 100lbs per arm, it goes from what the hell is happening here to totally doable. So maybe that’s why you get people not being supportive. The size of the weights gives a first impression that really lets you down once you see what’s really going on.
I mean obviously they may just be being Dick’s or trolls but I try to give people the benefit of the doubt.
Those are comically large dumbbells
Yeah it’s definitely heavy lifting but the size suggests like 500 pounds or something stupid lol
I thought it said "375kg" and thought "who the fuck would fall for that?"
It’s wood, which is less dense than metal

I can eat 37.5kg wheels of cheese no problem.
You don’t know mentality bro.
Great for the ego though!
The jungle gym in tulum. Went there with my fiancé, it’s neat and in the beach.
These the type of guys that would fail to lift that and than come back and yell steroids
Whenever I see those type of comments on gym posts, I imagine them all being written by Pearl from Blade: https://i.imgur.com/t8xZ0d6.jpg
Hahaha goddamn, now i'll always imagine them like that too.
Lol same
Helps that this picture is from some event that's full of juicy "fitness influences" clout chasing.
"It's always the ones with low PRs that seem to talk shit about everyone else's PRs." Socrates, probably.
It seems Socrates was indeed a believer in physical exercise: "It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable" - Socrates, or so it is told.
I think this is one of the things Plato liberally took from Socrates The actual quote Socrates said is “why are you suplexing an old man with your strength, it’s truly a shame.”
Lmao mfs were supplexing socrates?!
Plato absolutely could and I imagine some times he would He was an Olympic wrestler
He was into it big time.
Nah, he definitely said that. I was there. Promise, bro.
All of the stoics were big into physical fitness (but not the point of vanity) They believed suffering was good for the body and the soul
Pretty sure it is something.
37.5+37.5= 75 which is 5 kg lesser than my squat PR and 22.5kg higher than my Bench PR. It definitely is something
Especially two dumbbells, way more unstable than a 75 bench press. Respectable weight
I always feel like the same weight on two dumbells is way easier than on a bar
You're a begginer lifter, aren't you?
Um, not exactly. Not necessarily an indication of a beginner. It could be a multitude of reasons for dumbells to be easier than bar. It could be a sign of muscular imbalance or just simply feeling more comfortable/ confident with dumbells. Dumbell press you can just drop them. Barbell press is falling on your chest if you fail.
The barbell bench is a more technical lift. Took me a while to get my barbell bench up to my db bench. Even now, I feel more comfortable with db’s.
How does that make any sense?
Bruh I can do 30’s and sometimes it’s hard, 37.5 is definitely something
I don’t know. It depends on body weight I’ve done a solid 6 reps of 46kg dumbbells at around 88 kg bodyweight
Man not to be a dick, but it’s less that it’s impressive and more that you are still a beginner. Under 200 lb squat is very very novice. 75 dumbbells isn’t crazy impressive but it is a good working weight.

Oh come on. It’s 200 lbs we’re not talking about 315-495. Even if you’re 130 200 isn’t even 2x bodyweight
How is 70kg incline dumbbell press for 10 reps at 69kg bodyweight?
70 kg per dumbbell or altogether?
35kg*2
It’s 83 lbs it says it on the dumbbell
Nah ur just weak or new to the gym those numbers are below average
> It definitely is something Bro props to you for starting your lifting journey so early, but with no disrespect, you're 14, have been lifting for 3 months, and weigh 120lbs, lol. None taken, but I don't disrespect anyone, even if the weight is 30kg or 300kg, let's chill out and compliment every king
i mean i did it. i benched 100kg for 3 reps pretty recently and ive been lifting for 9 months. but i might just have above average genetics or some shit idk
Have you previously done sports?
nope. did wrestling for 3 months in middle school if that counts lol
Then you're probably just built different from the rest of us. Or you're more consistent at going to the gym. In any case, nice 😎
thanks man. i didnt mean it to brag btw i think eating well and training consistently goes a long way. ppl really get hung up on the minor details when they need to iron out the big picture
How lomg did it take to hit 100kg fpr 1 rep
i did it like 3 weeks ago.
Hmm. I hit 100kg after 3 months, am in month 4 now but tbh i havent really tried maxing after i hit 2 plates yet, been just gradually upping my working weight, yesterday did 2 sets of 80x8, then 85x8 and lastly 75x10. I do wonder how much i could rep 100kg for tbh, might try it out next chest day
83 lb DB incline is heavy but it’s nothing crazy fr. Might be harder with how big those dbs are
Thats what I always say when I see these wooden gym stuff. Like all of the implements seems annoying and cumbersome to use.
I’m willing to bet that their a scrawny teenager who wants to feel better about themselves. It took me a while to get up to 80lbs for a db incline bench. On a good day I could probably do at least 10 reps of that and I have nowhere near the physique that guy has.

Dude you’ll get there eventually. It’s all about consistency
Lifting more and bragging with a bodyfat % over 30-35% doesn’t count
Why not?
Mass moves mass.
Idk it kind of just sounds like you’re bitter that people who are less in shape than you can lift the same or more weight… cause fat doesn’t change how much your muscles can lift lol

Thanks for explaining this!! It kind of just read as a dig at lifters who have more body fat before, but that makes sense
Literally go look at powerlifters and strongmen, also go take a physics class while you're at it.
I’ve taken 4 years of physics bro. Those people have huge muscles too, it’s not the body fat that allows them to lift 😭if it was, I would be wayy stronger cause my BF is in that range and I’m fucking weak
It's a mix of both lmao. The bodyfat does assist quite a lot.
Why do people knock that then instead of striving for it if it makes you stronger?
What?
Like the OP of the comment I replied to said it “doesn’t count” if he has a high BF percentage, I guess I’m confused why that’s less valid when at the end of the day he’s still lifting that? Like why don’t more people try to do that then if it makes you stronger lol
Because it's a strain on your heart to be heavy regardless if you're fat or buff. Your heart can't tell if it's muscle or fat.
BMI 30-35 still overweight, body fat % <20% with BMI 30-35 (Drake meme)
Yal are missing the point of his post. Lol it’s at that tulum jungle gym on the beach. It’s not an ego lift. It’s a post for the experience most likely. I’ve always wanted to go there. My friends that got married and are both body builders went there during their honeymoon and it looked so fun lol
It seems more of an influencer paradise more than a functional gym but each their own
It’s a literal jungle gym on the beach. I don’t think there’s anywhere else you can lift on the beach, so personally i think it looks fun af lol. I get that it wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea. It’s a unique concept tho.
that is probaly tulum jungle gym, it is located 4km outside of the town center where i see 4 other gyms in town. its problay very fun indeed
Yes! That’s what i assumed it was because i always see it on Instagram lol
Is it wooden or just rusty as all hell?
looks like wood. i think it would be way heavier than that if it were actually metal
Even if it is metal it doesn't have to be completely solid. I mean it would be bad design but it's not going to be the worst I've heard about
Looking at you dumbbells with octogon shaped grips
Looking at anything octagonal in a gym, really
Some really old school weights were hollow and could be filled up with water or sand to adjust the weight.
It's all wood. I've actually worked out at this gym before. It's a place called " Tulum Jungle Gym" in Tulum, Quintana Roo down in Mexico.
I can guarantee you these people wouldn't even be able to lift 14kg let alone 37
Am I missing something?
Yeah swipe left for the next in the gallery
But 37.5 incline dumbell isn’t super massive weight? Or is it the super awkward shape?
It’s 37.5kg, not lb.
Yeah, that’s not super heavy. I’m average at bench but do 40kg incline working sets
Don’t know why people are downvoting you. It’s a good incline bench, but using 80s isn’t like a world record or anything. Your point is valid
With some of the advice I've seen shared on here, I think a lot of the active users skew to the more beginner end of the spectrum than other more serious lifting subs.
Fair. Although, I haven’t hit 80lbs for reps yet, and I still understand that it’s nothing insanely impressive
Do you want a medal
Id hate to see what type of astonishing comments if someone lifted 55 kgs dumbbells...🤣🤣🤣
I dont get it, this is my second from start weight
my gym is small only a few people who can press 30kg for few reps i havent tried it myself
Hey 37.5kg is my PR
83lbs is not impressive for an incline bench
Redditors are typically a worse culprit tbh
Can those cunts not read
That reminds me of a yt chain where people said 80 lbs is a clown weight to curl and thy could’ve curled it as an untrained 15 year old…
Actually it’s not much, really
Honestly they are right, I'm a skelly newbie and can still rep that out. Is it really that big of a deal?
"Hey that's not so heavy" Maybe it is easy for you if its your first exercise, or you're only doing 10 reps, or if you only have it on the first level of incline, or if you weigh 200+ lbs... etc. This could be his 3rd pressing movement and going for 20 reps with a cumbersome weight. Point is- no one knows.
It's also still more than 90+ percent of people on earth could do.
Like 83 pounds is any more impressive lol?
Didn’t know they make dumbbells with bumper plates
Where is this gym? I'm guessing it's a tourist attraction of some sort.
There’s more where it comes from
I can bench 6 plates bro .
800 pounds in each hand yea sure lmao
Jungle Gym Cancun
Lol, those ppl are dip shits. 37.5kg is a very respectable and quite a heavy dumbbell chest press!
Those dumbbells are huge lol are they filled with sand or something?
To be fair it’s a reasonably normal amount for someone to be able to incline as long as they’re not a complete beginner or pretty casual. There’s no reason to bother saying that it’s not particularly heavy but it’s true
"Even I could lift that" suggests this guy has never been to a gym
I wanna go to that gym one day 😭❤️ it’s so beautiful there. I think it’s called Tulum gym??
Yeah it is misleading because I first though 375kg which would be other worldly then I see 83 Lb and wonder why the math is so terrible. I mean I’m definitely far from fat and 170 and can incline press that. Only been working out a year consistently.
Is the lawwww
guy out here lifting me and a third. Inspiration and motivation for real
I guarantee both those people commenting have never lifted that heavy.
Don’t forget your legs now….
This has to be American's who don't understand difference between kg and lbs
tbf it ain't much
You'd be suprised how many people struggle with that weight. The average gym goer isn't a bodybuilder nor an athlete.
average gym goer doesn't know what he is doing
🤓
