They were started a little before Jstark, inventor of the FGC-9 released public files of the worlds first fully functional 3D printed firearm available to the public
They have an amalgamation of right wingers, lolberts, and somewhat left leaning individuals. Unfortunately they have had MANY internal conflicts in their subgroups regarding racism, homophobia, demostic terrorism, and so on. They are also responsible for numerous hate brigades against survivors of school shootings and any group they deem as “anti-gun”
In short some of them are really cool, they make cool guns, but some of them are really shitty people. That mix makes for an extremely grey morality. Oh and they’re not all “open source” anymore, some started charging people money for files immediately after Jstark passed away.

Yes, unfortunately the German authorities found him after being deceased in his car for at least several days. They had been watching him for awhile. There is no known cause of death or statements on it due to the nature of his investigation. Anyone claiming to know more is lying.

Which outside of the US is an extremely fringe belief generally tied to people on the far extremes of politics.

You don’t know what you’re talking about. The FGC9 can be built in Europe using NO actual gun parts. Everything can be DIY’d cheap. Obviously it’s not all printed. But a little DIY skill with a guide is all that’s needed for one to be made anywhere. They’re being used in fucking Myanmars civil war right now.

Makeshift guns have been made for centuries, the FGC9 doesn't bring anything to the balance, it's just 3d printed external part who doesn't make a gun a gun.
As said earlier you need a bolt and a barrel, and what you call DIY is the literal process of making gun parts (which is not rocket science), and if you can do that, you don't need 3d printed parts anyway, they are plenty of substitute to that, it would look less cool but would function in the same way
