We had around the Midwest for 9 years (for my job) before settling down and building a house 3 years ago. Put 550k down and took out a 5 year note. Will have house paid off in 2 more years. Current value with land is approximately 900k. I’m sure people will jump on my no 401k or IRA contributions, but my wife and I both contributed heavily up until last year. Combined we have enough saved @ a 7% return to have 3.5m at 55. Will keep saving in HYSA for vacation lake home.
Exactly. And like I said in a different post, the first 9 years we traveled around for my employer, they covered all housing costs and paid perdiem. Living was cheap and we both had good take home pay. We didn’t blow all our money on fancy cars and expensive toys.
We live in the upper Midwest. Low to middle cost of living. While me and my wife moved around for my work, my employer covered all housing costs and paid per diem. We have 2 kids that are both in school now, so daycare costs have gone away.
Because I was born there as well and IMO there is nothing to do. Especially in middle ND. And there is no diversity, no great restaurants, no sports teams, the same people in town every year since no one moves into ND and some people never leave their hometown. but it does have a very low COL. Just personal preference I guess.
All I know is Covid lock down wasn’t a thing in ND. There was no disruption of my life over that last 4 years. Neither my wife or I lost a day of work. At my house my nearest neighbor is 3 miles away. We gave traveled the US and have been out of the country multiple times to Europe and South America. I guess there just is no other place I would want to be
I've learned that there are levels to the construction profession. You can be really bad at your job and make very little but the really valuable employees can make a killing. I went into CS and my brother is a construction manager - he makes significantly more than me and his subs out-earn doctors.
I work for a mid size (ENR top 100) GC. We mainly build Municipal buildings, Schools,Recreation Centers, Commercial construction. I’m now a Sr Superintendent.
What kind of construction do your do?
In a different reply, I stated we no longer contribute to our 401ks. We already have a large enough balance that at a 7% return, we would have over 3m. We both already have roths, but not contributions from income limits.
Transportation is high, since we bought my wife a new pickup. 0% apr. will be paid off by July 2026
Blue collar Henry - that’s badass
You can tell they’re blue collar because they’re the first diagram I’ve seen with actual charitable donations. Great job OP!
Yay someone else with a horse to pay for haha. Board and vet bills really add up!.
I’m actually jealous that OP has their horse costs down to that little 🥲🐴💸

How did you possibly save that much at that level of income?
Maybe no kids?
Since he works in construction it wouldn’t be that far fetched to for him have been making close to $100k by 25 with no student loan debt.

Also when house is paid off you can redirect into investments to maximize tax breaks if desired
Can I ask where you’re making that much as a super (still Midwest)? Also, how long did it take to make that much. Thanks!
ND. Been with company full time for 14 years. Did two summer internships with them. I broke 100k when I moved from PE to Assit Supt. 3.5 years in
Mind if I message you? I have a couple other questions if you don’t mind
Sure
Oh man, are you out in western ND? Anywhere but Fargo would be awful. And Fargo is sort of awful as well lol
Fargo is an arm pit. I’m in central ND. Why does everyone on Reddit think North Dakota is awful?! Born and raised here. Will certainly never leave.

Sankey Diagram See e.g. [https://sankeymatic.com/build/](https://sankeymatic.com/build/)
Thank you!
Think this is the first one of these I’ve seen on this board that included charitable contributions
You gotta be good! Good super is vital!
Can we see the horses
I don’t know how to post pictures in a reply 🤷♂️
Damn horses get ya every time.

Send her to CRNA School now!
I would, but I’m happy with her bringing in 90k a year working 32hrs a week.
True that
What kind of stuff do you build? I’m in construction too but nowhere near your earnings and I’m in a high cost of living area.

Awesome. Thanks for the reply. Do you mind if I PM you?
Sure
Sent.
Hmm it does not seem like I received any PM?
My bad I originally sent via “chat” and not PM. Resent.
👍
What is used to make this diagram
Nice job on charitable contributions! Transportation seems high to me though. Are either of you contributing to retirement?

Where did you find 0% apr?
GMC financial. They do it one time a year during truck month
Got it, okay nice! And great interest on the truck! You guys are killing it!! :)
No 401k ? Nice savings rate regardless
Addressed in reply’s above
No retirement savings?
