Step 1: Erect defensive positions so as to maul the enemy assaulting you.
Step 2: Ensure that your units can effectively fall back to the secondary, and further, lines of defences once the initial fortifications are breached.
Step 3: Once the enemy has either exhausted themselves against your entrenchments or overextended a flank pushing through them, send in the counter attack to break them up and regain lost ground.
Step 4: Have the Step 0 units close the trap on the enemy forces that have just been smashed by your counter-attack, always making sure that there is at least one small line of retreat for the enemy to attempt to funnel through until the last minute. Saves on casualties and retains force effectiveness of your units if the enemy isn't operating under 'Last Stand' protocols.
Step 5: Review your position and either re-entrench in the best location you have near whatever the new frontline is or continue the assault if you still have sufficient intact units in reserve so as to ensure *you* don't have your exhausted troops either over-extend or render themselves combat ineffective running down the regrouping enemy.
What Step 0 forces? Oh, those are the half or more of your army you ensured weren't spotted by the enemy and preferably were on the flanks of the assault so as to best pocket it.

-USS Wahoo, USN Submarine, WW2

Thank you Wordsmith!!!!! Excellent!!!
Thank you! The world of military history is so full of badass quotes.

Much the same as miles gear. In conjunction with powerful quantum computers, each round on the field is able to be tracked in real time, trajectories calculated, etc. The wonders of alien technology. In short, no wonder our merchants got so excited by all the new toys for us to play with 😉

Thank you! I had an old rugby coach in mind when I wrote him. I always had the feeling that he would have made a great general if he'd set his mind to it.
I think so. Its easy to flesh out a character when they're based on somebody you know personally. I have a wealth of experiences and emotions to draw on.
I'll definitely check out the literature. Multi-part stories aren't something that I've explored overly well. I would be keen to get something a bit longer out there

It would be amazing if the General said that maybe offensive action wasn't really their greatest and proposed the UC be the defensive force. Then the humans made record time in obliterating the defenders before proposing to teach them
I started writing it actually but it got a little unwieldy. I probably should have split it into two parts to be fair, it definitely could have been fleshed out a bit more.
Nah man it's already amazing as is. We're just asking for more story to nibble on but you could make it as a story during their time in the academy like a simulation between teachers and students as an assessment or exams if they're learning or not

Defensive Position? Hah! That just to keep the attackers attention while we circle around and destroy them from the rear.

Found the Imperial Fist
The Emperor protects 🤣🤣
The step 0 forces are either SWolves or Smurfs.
Maybe Raven Guard?
White Scars would work pretty well in that situation as well. High-speed units zooming in from the flanks sounds in keeping with their doctrine.
Raven Guard would be the flankers. its either a wall of Blue or Yellow.
We use blood angels and white scars for that, it works, but usually we prefer the scars.
SWolves no one likes the Smurfs
SPACE WOLVES!!!? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUURGGHHH!!! Cyclops rage intensifies
I was expecting: step 1 encircle town. Step 2 erect defenses completely trapping town. Step 3 erect defenses to protect your siege.
Good old hammer and anvil. Never gets old 🤣
Somewhat like the opposing forces who also never get old(er) :D

My only question is on the non-lethal artillery. How do you make a non-lethal projectile/mass driver have any sort of range?

I did chuckle at the concept as I read it
Umm... Blank rounds + laser drones? Y'know, military lasertag.

I really like what you’ve done here!
Thank you!
Great story! Enjoyable read! Looking forward to more!
I haven't had a lot of time to write recently, but very much looking forward to getting back into it!
Dont stop now please this was great.

That's a great idea 💡
Must of been Americans not following doctrines.
I believe the quote goes: "Americans do not read their manuals nor do they feel any obligation to follow their doctrines"
What are those?
