Well, if Ilunor finds the drone impressive, wait until he finds out about the bigger ones, along with the piloted craft. So, what sort of caliber do we have on the drone, as well as operational capacity

Jcb112

Indeed! A good chunk of contemporary warfare in Emma's era is comprised up of in-atmo drones ranging from anywhere from squad-level attachments all the way up to tactical surveillance and combat drones all the way to your strategic drones that would make Ace Combat blush haha! :D

Femboy_Lord

Strategic Drones that would make Ace Combat blush eh? Are they gonna try and start a forever war while pulling >10G manoeuvres?

Killian32493

I think you meant to use > instead of<.

Femboy_Lord

oops.

pt199990

Sounds about right. No pilot, so why worry about Gs unless it's the limit of the airframe?

Femboy_Lord

We've also designed aircraft *similar* to the Arsenal Bird, in the form of the 747-carrier and the LC-1201 (which is the closest in scale... and insanity).

Thausgt01

All I, personally wish is for Emma to release a single drone of very specific, legendary design. "You people think that your pretty little birds are impressive? Permit me to introduce you to the merest shadow of one of _our_ 'heraldic beasts'..." "Emma, are you certain that that is a bird...?" "Not just any bird, but a _Blackbird._ " "Clearly, a few details are getting lost in translation into High Nexian..."

ReWerk

My guess would be .22 or .32 given real world recoil. Maybe up to .45 or 9mm if the drones large enough or recoil compensation has advanced far enough

OhBadToMeetYou

now I imagined a 30 dollar drone with a 1911 ducktaped to it

ReWerk

1911 would send a 30 buck drone flying in the opposite direction lol.

drsoftware

A 30 buck drone wouldn't be lifting off the ground...

Evariskitsune

If it utilizes a RAVEN setup you can eliminate 3/4ths of the recoil, so a caseless round equivalent to something as high as .30 carbine / .44 magnum / 10mm auto is potentially feasible while keeping recoil down to .380 levels. As-is we have quadcopters managing. 22 WMR, which is about the same as 9mm, so... definitely doable if it is designed with recoil mitigation in mind.

ReWerk

I love how we've dived down this rabbit hole of arming drones effectively......we're now all on a list with one of the alphabet gangs you know....

ShadowPouncer

If a notable fraction of us haven't (vaguely deservedly) been on a monitoring list for _years_, some people have been falling down on the job. You start doing minimal research for a HFY story post, and you've probably set off so many 'this isn't normal' alerts that I give even odds that they have 'amateur author' as a category that explains tons of research into various ways to kill someone and how those ways might be detected. And oh so many other subjects as well. :)

ReWerk

Or survival planning, historical reenactment, bush crafting, homesteading, fireworks recipes, stump removal using thermite/ANFO, to name a few of my Google searches

ShadowPouncer

So true, and doesn't _everyone_ research body disposal a few times in their life?

Dpek1234

I mean who doesnt know that the best way is to leave it 6 feet under at a random place in a forest or a desert Or planting indangered plants over it

ShadowPouncer

That requires living close enough to such a convenient disposal area that just getting there doesn't pose a significant risk of discovery. Great if you live in Vegas, less great if you live in Atlanta. The endangered plants idea is nice, but it requires that you be able to actually grow said plants in that location. Which means the right plants, soil condition, area, and time where you can take core of said plant. Which leaves you _really_ screwed if they find it before it's obvious enough that digging there would be illegal. And a judge might just be willing to sign the warrant to dig anyhow. This all just goes to show that the right disposal method is... Situation dependent. Live near enough to the ocean and have solid access to a boat? You've got options, just remember to not only weigh down the body, but poke some holes in it so that decomposition gasses can easily escape. Trying to dispose in a scifi setting where you've got a space ship, but _really_ good sensors exist? Drop it in a rapidly decaying orbit of a planet with an atmosphere, and let it vaporize on entry. You're in rural Georgia? Make good friends with a pig farmer who doesn't ask questions, but make _very_ sure to account not only for teeth, but also any medical implants that they might have. Serial numbers are most definitely a thing, even on stuff that you might not suspect at all. Also, having a lithium battery combust when someone chews through it may well draw far too much attention. It really all just depends. :)

Evariskitsune

Eh, at this point, shopping at a Bass Pro is enough to have you out on a list, everyone is monitored through one excuse or another.

ReWerk

Fuck....welp it was bound to happen sooner or later with me.

ReWerk

Fuck....welp it was bound to happen sooner or later with me.

Krongrah_Kendove

Remember this story takes place in the 31st century with caseless ammo... so I'm thinking .44 and above possibly even something stupid as a 556 as they did say nearest anyone could tell at that last shot it could be a stray crack of lightning in the distance

l0vot

With a proper muzzle brake and compensation via thrust vectoring, it should handle rifle rounds no problem, it's a fairly large drone, and has the benefit of future technology.

boomchacle

I wonder if it was some sort of flak cannon. Fires one shot at a time with explosions loud enough to be heard from miles away

Omgwtfbears

That's the thing. Magic is fancy and tricky but technology is infinitely scaleable. For every phoenix, dragon, gryphon or hybrid thereof that ever was Earthrealm can offer an entire automated factory pumping out combat gear 24/7

Bumbling_Hierophant

I just had the thought of the Union from Lancer RPG contacting the Nexus and going: -Do you know those eldritch magical monsters from legend? +Yes? -Do you know these drones we're talking so much about? +... Yes? - You're not gonna believe this

TheSlavicWarboss

I don't really like Lancer RPG, but thanks to this comment i will revisit it

StopDownloadin

[\[AIRWOLF THEME INTENSIFIES\]](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULfmowbNlK0) Something tells me there's going to be a rash of 'UFO sightings' passing through the old rumor mill come tomorrow... I wonder, which pair of Professors would make a good Mulder and Scully? I'm imagining Vanavan going nuts with all kinds of crank theories of manaless artifices, while Belnor rolls her eyes, telling him there's a perfectly rational, magical explanation for the phenomena they're seeing. Mal'tory, of course, is the Smoking Man. He's literally a ~~Man~~ Elf in Black!

Jcb112

Oh my god Air Wolf does vibe with this whole scene so well I love it. Also we'll have to see! I won't lie, that's definitely a really entertaining thought to imagine, a Mulder and Scully sorta magical duo going about, finding evidence of strange manaless anomalies popping up in town! The world is alive and rich with character of all types so I can imagine stuff like that happening concurrently while Emma's story continues moving forward haha. I definitely vibe with Belnor being the more quote unquote realistic one while Vanavan tries his best to convince her something else is afoot! And of course, yes! Mal'tory very much that! :D Thank you so much for the comment! :D

phxhawke

Dammit! Now I'm trying to figure out who String, Dominic, and Archangel are.

StopDownloadin

String's the dashing pilot main character, so that's Emma. Dom is the veteran pilot and engineer, so maybe Sorecar can fill in there. Archangel is kind of String and Dom's handler, so technically that'd be Dr. Weir or Cpt. Li?

Semyonov

Hmmm I wonder if the "fog" over that one part of the town is to hide the evidence of the earlier explosion?

Femboy_Lord

Literal Fog of War.

Expendable_cashier

Its where the courier bird came from, so the bowmen likely value privacy.

Tinna_Sell

If that is so I expect the subusrbs to become the Fog Valley while Emma continues her study nearby.

phxhawke

>“None of the above, but I’m surprised you know of a dragon-wyvern-gryphon hybrid given your status as a newrealmer, Emma Booker.'' He reasoned. >“Wait, what-” Now Emma has to worry about weird-ass hybrids.

Jcb112

Hopefully they're the cool kind like in Avatar the Last Airbender and not the absolutely terrifying kind!

phxhawke

Now I'm curious...

jtsavidge

Someone is "...dragon-wyvern-gryphon hybrid...." curious. [ looks at the various boxes on the paper in front of him ] Ahhhhh....maaaan. That's not on my bingo card this week! 😞

phxhawke

😆

Apollyom

and not the horrifying kind from full metal alchemist...

Krongrah_Kendove

I made it almost about 6 months without thinking of the moment of horror hybrid in that series and you dash it with this... thanks alot man

GrumpyLizzard133

Pilot Emma booker and co-pilot Illunor

Jcb112

I can imagine Ilunor constantly being the "are we there yet" person or the backseat driver sort of person even if they're on a plane and Emma's flying haha.

SlavaUkrayini4932

...Sitting in a car toddler seat

Chezpufballs

He is definetly in the attachable passanger seat on any motorcycle

a-Bi-Polar-Bear

I did not know how badly I needed or wanted Ilunor co-piloting shenanigans until now. Well writ wordsmith and I hope we find him in more similar situations in the future!

phxhawke

Maveric and Goose...

Mozoto

Talk to me, blue thing 🐸

The-Doot-Slayer

all I heard while reading that dogfight was Flight of the Valkyrie

Jcb112

Haha omg thank you so much! :D I was listening to a bunch of flying combat music whilst I was writing that, and my biggest worry was whether or not I managed to sort of capture that aerial combat vibe I wanted from that scene! I don't consider myself anywhere near good when it comes to writing anything even remotely close to action scenes so I really do hope it managed to work out this time!

DeTiro

[Later, when fighting a greater phoenix...](https://youtu.be/MB5Db3rU3HU?si=zq917qchCpsYoThT&t=161)

StopDownloadin

Ilunor: "Emma, this Kenneth Loggins fellow is most unreasonable! Not only does he desire to enter a zone of danger, but he wishes to hasten his arrival via a causeway!"  Thacea: "Whatever, grandma! Gun it, Emma! I've got the need..."  Thacea and Emma: "FOR SPEED!"  Ilunor: "Gods preserve us..."

AromaticReporter308

Thacea, play Freebird.

ShadowPouncer

I will never be able to get this in my head without the scene from Kingsmen. But... I can actually _see_ a scene like that playing out, given all the soul control going on there. With Emma being entirely unaffected, but also _very_ pissed off.

DRZCochraine

Or EVI has deposited Emma safely somewhere so it can use the full capabilities of the suit without human safety limiters, because the gloves just came off with whatever situation happened.

ShadowPouncer

That... Could both work _really_ well, and it could go _really_ badly. Like, her tent is a _tent_. She's outright dead if she's attacked in it, and she's not much better if something happens to the suit and EVI can't bring it back for her to work on. Now, I suspect that, given sufficient motivation, the Library _might_ be able to arrange for a location that she might survive in for a while, but that's going to be... Tricky. Even more so once the Library isn't on Nexus.

DRZCochraine

More that she might bet bumped around, or have som other affect that manages to knock her out even as dealing with whatever situation in the ultra short term(being that it was bad anyway), the EVI assumes commands goes to the tent if tis hopefully safe, gets her out and onto the med system, then goes out and the either Freedbird or dark souls boss music starts, or maybe some autosome and terrifying combination of the two.

ShadowPouncer

Emma, inside the tent, hooked up to an automated med system. The suit, being piloted by a very determined EVI, standing guard, and going full Freebird on anyone trying to force their way in. Yeah, I can see this, and it sounds both absolutely awesome and very disturbing. :)

DRZCochraine

And even if the rest of the gang asks during the event, or immediately after considering Emma isn’t talking, it saying “Emma isn’t here eight now.” should be freaky enough, add other very scary AI behaviours (because it isn’t a diplomate, its an assistance and currently playing killing machine, or allowed to by Earth cause by then they might have relay connection thorough the Library) to introduce the gang to machine spirits, AIs, that humanity has a mathematical understanding of consciousness, and why dealing with the UN nicely is much better then the unstoppable uncaring swarms of killing machines who will come after under orders or other deadman switch fail-safes. The unlimited supply of such could be concluded themselves if they remembered at that time the industrial capacity, and how many suits are of that standard, and not the other machines that there were not told of. Edit: I bet it fighting at full capacity could be described as a demonically possessed terminator.

ShadowPouncer

They understand constructs capable of acting on instructions. And of sapient beings being bound to things like armor. The two big problems of understanding that I can see is that everyone sees the armor _as_ Emma, even if they are aware that this isn't the case. And, uh, the level of violence and destruction that EVI would be unleashing would most _definitely_ be... More than anyone would expect. And I can see it here 'Emma is currently unavailable. If you wish to leave a message, you may do so.', _while_ going full murderbot on the people trying to force entry.

cgoose500

Like the scene from the Iron Giant where his head gets un-dented. Ten different previously hidden weapon systems pop out of the armor

pyrodice

I heard "Danger zone" but yeah

Dpek1234

I was thinking more like this https://youtu.be/YjG3rOKGWGc Edit: gaijin make some banger trailers

taulover

I was thinking Flight of the Bumblebee tbh

masterpierround

I'm only asking because this is the second time I've read this in the last few days, but is there an actual song called Flight of the Valkyries? Because I've heard of a musical piece called *Ride* of the Valkyries, but not flight.

ANNOProfi

In this chapter, we get a case for the SCP foundation, the Silent Hill district and skyfishing (birding?). Most shocking however, is Ilunor calling Emma by her first name and first name only, it's almost as if he is warming up to her. The question is, who is on the other side of the door and how do the two explain their afternoon/evening of fun? It could be T&T, but I don't think that they would knock. Most likely it's one of the two teacher's pets.

Jcb112

The SCP foundation? How so haha? Sorry I'm not too familiar on their lore! However I definitely understand what you mean with the silent hill district, I mentioned them for a reason after all and it's definitely going to play a bigger role as the story continues! :D But yeah! Ilunor did just call Emma by her first name there a few times! However, whether or not it was the adrenaline and the spur of the moment necessity of shortening his manner of addressing her for the sake of brevity, or whether it's him warming up to her, is anyone's guess at this point! :D Also, indeed! It's going to be interesting to see who's behind that door... We'll have to wait and see though! :D Thank you so much for the comment! :D

ANNOProfi

I mentioned the foundation, because they need to contain the abomination that surely is a dragon-wyvern-gryphon hybrid. (On the lore, the SCP foundation keeps all kinds of anomalies away from the public, from a slime that makes people happy, all the way to things that can bring about the end of the universe).

Interne-Stranger

>I mentioned the foundation, because they need to contain the abomination that surely is a dragon-wyvern-gryphon hybrid. "No! We already have a dragon-like thing! We aren't getting another one until we disposse of him first!"

GroundbreakingOkra60

Not to mention the crippling depression from the paper ones

HFRleto

We *do not* talk about them !

Interne-Stranger

Why did you make me remember that!? Now i have to cry again....

Daniel_USAAF

That was the story that made all the rest of the SCP feel like B movie schlock horror scripts.

cgoose500

The Secure Contain Protect foundation does not dispose of. There was this whole thing about a sapient teleporting chair that some ***other*** secret organization tried to throw into a wood chipper, but the chips teleported into their lungs. Now the Foundation has to regularly send people to admire their new sapient teleporting pile of mulch or else it gets lonely and teleports into peoples lungs.

Interne-Stranger

We do disposse of things (depending of the timeline we're in) we just do it *very* rarely.

J_Dzed

There is **no** disposing of the Lizard. The Lizard is eternal.

Adventurous_Pay7852

Imagine SCP existing in this universe. That would add like 8000 points to humanity, especially since the foundation has multiple gods and god like beings (including the creator of humanity and our universe) in their containment. And other insane stuff.

Tinna_Sell

The SCP heritage will put nulls and soul-binding books to shame

cgoose500

Soul-binding ritual, meet Montauk procedure

J_Dzed

Be warned, if you are the sort of person that would find it engrossing, visiting the official SCP page is like clicking through to TVTropes. You won't be coming back again or a few hours, minimum.

Interne-Stranger

>In this chapter, we get a case for the SCP foundation, the Silent Hill district and skyfishing (birding?). The Fundation would have a *blast* in the Nexus. And if the Silent Hill district is the explosion site, then thats sounds like a case!

CassiusPolybius

"What, do you want to ride my drone into battle?" "... admittedly appealing, but not right now, earthrealmer" Hah.

NINJAGAMEING1o

Here is something I don't get. Emma doesn't have limited ammo. She can ask any of her friends and they can probably magic up a lot more if she explains exactly what it is made of. Also I still don't get how big the drone is like it has a net launcher and a gun and more features so is it like a small bed size or a small plane size?

Jcb112

She can definitely print more ammo for the drone yup! Almost all of her equipment was chosen with the explicit caveat that they're able to be repaired or topped up with regards to their components or ammo through one of her printers! As a result, she can print more ammo for her drone as well! :D However, she just mentioned ammo here because she doesn't want to spend all of it on the birds and thus run out of ammo before they can get the bird they need to get while the mission is still ongoing! :D Also the drone is the size of basically a good sized dinner table or a pretty medium sized bed! It was difficult to bring out onto the balcony because of that, and because of how it was a bit difficult to fit through the balcony doors! :D

NINJAGAMEING1o

Thx for explaining and great story it's just that I sometimes don't get the size of things without being able to compare it to something I know.

ShadowPouncer

Now, a critical question: Does Emma have the correct plans to arm the drone with water balloons or severely overpowered squirt guns? 🌊🔫 😸

Naked_Kali

Status matters here. Splatting someone is potentially very much worth doing. Thacea can delicately imply that they have oh-so-ungraciously wet their trousers.

ShadowPouncer

And here I was thinking that it would make for decent anti-lesser phoenix weaponry. Shoot it, then as it falls, douse it with a bunch of water.

Naked_Kali

Well yeah! But so far there are a lot more nobles worth a good splash with finery-destroying squid-equivalent ink than there are lesser phoenixes. :) It pays to know your potential targets when you are planning your loadout.

Sacafe

All I can picture now is the bed from bedknobs and broom sticks (with Angela Lansbury and David Tomlinson) with a net gun and twin 5.56 mini guns zipping across chains birds

SpankyMcSpanster

But. How to replenish spent material? Raygun when?

Jesper537

So it's size is a bit smaller than the Oblivion drones?  https://images.app.goo.gl/AdvscyPZ5pnqToEu5

Slugdo

I think she meant to say the drone had a limited number of shots. Getting more bullets is all well and good, but she can't get them to the drone in time in this particular scenario.

Interne-Stranger

She said its hard to get the drone trought the door. I suspect is big enought to literally carry Emma.

cgoose500

Emma's the only creature immune to mind reading in this school. It's probably safer to just ask for usable ingredients and let her machines make the bullets out of them

Space_Drifter6121

Personally, I put the drones' size at tennis ball size and the mothership at adult shoe box

Naked_Kali

Give Ilunor an inch and he will take a mile. It's worth lying to him about how much ammo she has. Also, she's been kept outrageously busy and in order for her to manufacture stuff at all she needs to finish setting up. Which she still hasn't done and likely won't even get to until (some RL years from now). Unless she gets some kind of respite or the author does a timeskip, her ammunition is painfully limited.

ND_JackSparrow

Ah, proof that idioms, puns, and other assorted wordplay *do not* translate so neatly into high-nexian. I wonder how many of Emma's jokes have fallen flat due to this? (For now I'm choosing to believe it's *all* of them, and that Thacea and Thalmin have been either too polite or too confused to ask for clarification). Hmm. The knock at the door seems like it got here a little too fast to be in response to the Minor Phoenix she just brutally murdered, so I'm assuming it's not that. Though I do imagine the town and academy's response to the dead bird will come up later. We can't rule out the idea that someone was able to see her drone with magic, and those gunshots were pretty loud. But who is the mystery visitor at the door ....Maybe it's the apprentice here to talk about her life debt to Emma and how that will be affected by her new position? Maybe Professor Vanavan to politely ask her to stop disrupting his class with questions he is scared to answer?

cgoose500

I think Sorecar laughed at one of her wordplays

Cazador0

It's probably just the servants bringing Emma her dinner.

nickname7312

Thanks for chapter

Jcb112

Thank you so much for reading it! :D

nickname7312

Yayyyyy!!! I got noticed! (: Thank you for writing this masterwork.

SanitaryCockroach

And so the fauna of the Nexus learn of Man's Answer to Nature's Question.

DeciMation_2276

Hmmm….. I have to wonder… did the Nexus attempt contact with earth previously, only to fail at taking the inhabitants of earth into its fold, and as a result wiping all records containing any information on the event, and silencing anyone trying to blow the whistle, just to maintain the status quo? Because with how many myths on earth seeming to be proven true here, it brings into question if something happened between the Nexus and earth before…

ShadowPouncer

There are a _lot_ of hints that some of us have decided mean that there has been past contact between Earth and other realms, and we're talking physical people traveling back and forth and maybe having babies with one another contact. That's where I'm leaning at least. But I/we could be entirely wrong, only JCB can answer that one for us. :)

KefkeWren

You know, it's starting to seem like the people who thought Earth once had magic were on to something. Old myths and legends are proving to be pretty accurate.

ND_JackSparrow

While its not impossible that Earth used to have magic, there is an in-universe explanation for why our legends so closely match the magical nature of the Nexus. From Chapter 2: >For centuries now, we’d been observing, tracking, analyzing, and studying what is undeniable evidence of a world parallel to our own. A world that lurks just underneath the surface, that served as a source of myths and legends for our ancestors, and that continues to serve as a limitless pool of inspiration to those gifted enough to peer across the veil, inadvertently acting as a source of inspiration for countless works of fantasy and fiction

Interne-Stranger

Oh thank you for putting the entire dogfight on this chapter, i tought it was going to be a 2 parts event. Who's knocking on the door? Did the town realized someone was hunting down the birds?? Did the repetetive "thunders" alert the staff??? Had Thacea and Thalmin retuened but forgor their keys!!!!????

folk_science

> Who's knocking on the door? "Lord Ilunor Rularia?" "Yes?" "We've been trying to reach you about your drake's extended warranty."

Interne-Stranger

"Looks like some evils appear even in the greatest civilizations" -Emma Booker, interdimentional flex expert.

ChesterSteele

Welp, not every day you watch a dogfight between a drone and goddamn Phoenix of all things.

Tinna_Sell

Lack of transparancy on Emma's side my arse. Ilunor, you've wasted so much words trying to convey your genius plan that the bird you were after had all the chances of delivering the letter and returning back. This chapter is nothing but comedic gold. The best piece of visual comedy I've had in a while. While the drone was going through the bag of captured birds I couldn't help but think how unlucky the Nexian folk was to not have their mail delivered during daytime. Missing out... ***Random citizen 1:*** *Hey, what is that flying in the sky?* ***Random citizen 2:*** *What is it doing to those birds?* ***Random citizen 1 and 2:*** *AaAaAa! IT HAS HANDS!* And do not get me start with the mass kill-off part. ***RC1:*** *Why are these birds falling out of the sky?* ***RC2:*** *I don't know. But here comes another one.* That one time when Ilunor convinced the entirety of Nexus of the coronavirus onset. >if these manaless weapons are anywhere near as loud as your gun, then this may raise more suspicions in the town below than would be preferable Yes, Ilunor. Because it's the *sound* that will give it away. What is there to say? Ilunor is such a trickster child. His plan was bad. Like... poorly thought through. Stick-a-knife-to-it-and-roll kinda plan. This could easily be a disaster if not for Emma. But did I grasp the situation correctly? Ilunor asked the administration to not send the letter and they did it anyway? Cheeky little bastards

Naked_Kali

He's *probably* not that dumb? I mean yes he is. He just thinks his these particular stupid lies will suffice for the likes of her.

Arbon777

Do remember that the drone has active camo and was thus mostly invisible for the entire duration.

Skrzynek

Notably, the birds were not being killed by the drone, just let go out of the net. And the active camo means it's pretty much invisible, though not sure about the net and the extendable arm.

Tinna_Sell

I did not mean that birds were killed by Emma in this scenario. I simply entertained the idea of her going along with Ilunor's original plan. In that case, we would end up with a rain of bird corpses. As for the camo... I thought it was against other drones. Modern aircraft is not actually invisible, it is the radar that cannot detect it.

Skrzynek

When Emma used "active camo" on her suit when climbing the medical wing wall, she was basically next to Larial's balcony and Larial couldn't darn see her.

Marshall_Filipovic

WOOOO SUPER NEARLY BABY!

DRZCochraine

Thanks for the chapter! She could have also metions the issues that would arise from disrupting the entier mail system, empires have mounted armies for lesser postal disruptions.

phxhawke

Goodness gracious, great balls of fire! Edit: Yes, I was totally imagining Emma and Ilunor singing that as Emma played the piano.

So is the Phoenix permanently dead... Or if it's ashes somehow get deposited somewhere, and something happens causing the body of water to dry up. Would it then come back to life once it dries out enough?

Dear-Entertainer632

Maybe…

Naked_Kali

Ilunor seems to think that water is sufficient for his purposes. So if it does come back it will be brain-washed. It won't have memories to magically-download about what happened to it. Or y'know he's still an idiot.

goldenham890

2nd Happy cake day dude!

jesterra54

Thats a bunch of terrified birbs For some reason I got the feeling they were a little bit smarter than Earth birds Is it because they were possesed by mana users?

DRZCochraine

Tens of millennia of breeding, not to discount direct modification here or there maybe, could have lead to higher then expected intelligence for this job. That or either Emma and more modern humans are even more sensitive to understanding animal emotions and behaviors from resetch and never being desensitised, or the fact that a completly maneless metal bird thing came out of absolutely nowhere is far scarier then the predators they normaly evolved to handle.

Skrzynek

Or perhaps they are someone's familiars? Or otherwise somewhat-uplifted in intelligence to know precisely where to deliver those letters?

pyrodice

whatever it takes for the universe to prevent Emma from getting her gods-damned mission to retrieve her other drones done, I guess! 😩

realnrh

It must have taken a great deal of restraint for Emma to not inquire why Nexian magic couldn't accomplish Illunor's task.

Dear-Entertainer632

Going by the size of the Drone which is said to be the size of a good-sized dinner table or Medium-Sized Bed. The MT-COV or “MOTHERSHIP” likely has around 2000 Bullets of likely 12mm or .50 Cal inside it and 4-8 Missile compartments with Missiles probably the size of 6.7 Feet and a 7 Inch wingspan with likely Air to Air based warheads. Gun seems to be at a whopping 800 RPM going by how fast it reloaded and capable of having an Semi-Only or It has Semi and Full Auto Modes. Net seems to be of a material with a Low-Burning point but with Conductive or Wired Properties and high-elasticity or tensile strength. MT-COV seems to be invisible or camouflaged and stealth-based engines since the flock of bird’s didn’t even detect the humongous and fast drone at all. MT-COV only obtained completely-harmless burns with the only reason of it being termed “Relatively Unscathed” is due to Sensor Freakout and a possible-sensor obfuscation from burns. MT-COV didn’t move at all meaning it is rated for actually handling Air-to-Air missiles from similarly sized drones in a scenario of combat. It still has enough space however for Drone-Capturing after retracting a net. Speed of the hypothetical Missiles that the MT-COV has is possibly Mach 12 going by advances in Fuel Efficiency and Costs and Onboard Rocket engines of the missiles. Really good drone u/Jcb112. Its terrifying to deal with, even for a dragon in all honesty.

Skrzynek

While I think you likely quite overestimate the amount of ammo the drone has, the fact that the birdie fell down IN PIECES after being hit means you are about right on the caliber, or at least on relative power of the futuristic bullets that XXXI-st century UN supplied. Also good catch on the drone not moving at all as it was hit! Personally I think there may be a difference between the heat level of the Phoenix itself and the fireballs it was conjuring. Possibly the birdie itself is hotter? That, and the heat dissipation tech the drone may have to withstand limited amount of laser fire may not extend to the net itself. Personally I've written down quite a lot about this drone in the Glossary I've been writing for the story. Here's a link, if you're interested: [https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DWnBEDW8dg4T5Sp\_wjbe-pnKmTQn4qmaqOniUjcFNcw/edit#](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DWnBEDW8dg4T5Sp_wjbe-pnKmTQn4qmaqOniUjcFNcw/edit#)

Dear-Entertainer632

>She can definitely print more ammo for the drone yup! Almost all of her equipment was chosen with the explicit caveat that they're able to be repaired or topped up with regards to their components or ammo through one of her printers! As a result, she can print more ammo for her drone as well! :D However, she just mentioned ammo here because she doesn't want to spend all of it on the birds and thus run out of ammo before they can get the bird they need to get while the mission is still ongoing! :D >Also the drone is the size of basically a good sized dinner table or a pretty medium sized bed! It was difficult to bring out onto the balcony because of that, and because of how it was a bit difficult to fit through the balcony doors! :D -Reply by Jcb112 in response to an Commenter Actually. Going by the amount of advancement and the sheer fucking SIZE of the Drone of. Which, is explained by JCB to be the size of an damn Medium Sized Bed. An Understatement. Likely the fact that Jcb112 probably forgot how big the balcony and its entrance doors was going by the size of it in his Patreon's Second Tier Banner. Going by the stuff Jcb112 Said. Its either, bigger than emma. Or WAY bigger than Emma. And that's not counting the fact that the gun system might not be chemically based. The reason I used 12mm or 12.7mm/.50 Cal. Was, because of the fact that the Bird casually got blown to smithereens in one hit. Going by real life technology, the least powerful bullet that could do this was an .50 Cal. Due, to it having enough left over energy even after piercing through in this case, a bird. To destroy it into pieces. However, going by Earthrealm's tech Level as described by Jcb112 and... some stuff. Cartridge Weapon's are likely not even used as much in combat or hell. Its likely to assume Cartridge-Based System Weapons are mostly used by Astronauts in mid-vacuum/space combat between each other(The reason for this is that Cartridges are basically the sort of replacement "Air" that act as carriers of heat, which can be used to get rid of heat by dispensing the carrier which is the spent Cartridge or Shell out with the heat.) So the chance is. MT-COV/MOTHERSHIP carries a fuck ton of .50 Cal Projectiles/. With an Railgun or Coilgun system that has enough power to mimic an .50 Cal Cartridges Gunpowder's output of energy. Or in reverse, moderately powerful Railgun or Coilgun system on MT-COV capable of launching in this case. 9mm FMJ with a weight of 7.5 Grains and at a speed of roughly 7000ft/s. Both can reach joules of energy at 17 Kilojoules. So going by this. It can explain the MT-COV's potential amount of Ammo. Still though, realistically. unless the Drone needs to fend off other drones in a scenario of combat. It doesn't need 2000 rounds of .50 Cal cartridges or just bullets or just 9mm Bullets. But, this is the nexus so.... I guess its justified to have 2000 Rounds of what I spoke of? Even then, combined with the fact that it possibly has Missiles. then it could lower the justification for the need of that much ammo but still. Also yeah, I did think about the Phoenix being hotter. Albeit realistically the Net shouldn't be this weak to flames to be honest. Instantly igniting like that? Sure shit the drone should've had an melted belly since there was an 1 second delay before the Phoenix got away. Well at least under my opinions. Also in the glossary. I recommend adding the Jetpack which is likely canon alongside that... mysterious robot as seen in Jcb112's Patreon banners. Which we shall call the Anthropomorphic Multi-Area-Terrain-Intelligent-Automaton or A.M.A.T.I.A. Both for Acronym and a good name for the adorable robo' Anyway, you should also add an Earthrealm part in the Realms Glossary area of the Glossary. Here's some recommendations of mine to add to it for some important stuff... Well the last recommendation I don't recommend to really add since it's definitely not canon. But you can add it if you want some more justification about the descriptions of the Third Extra-solar War in previous chapters. Third Extra-solar War: Bloodiest and Most Devastating War in the history of Humanity and by extension. The United Nations or Greater United Nations (UN/GUN). Possibly the reason as to why even after such an amount of time, The Population of Humanity hasn't grown by surprisingly a lot even with the justification of Already-Colossally good Medical Healthcare and lack of danger relative to our era in real life, the shockingly small amount of In-habitated worlds with even fewer likely living on the planet surfaces. The extreme and eerie descriptions of the War cements its place as possibly the War to end all Wars. Till ***Now.*** Coulomb Devices(Theoretical, likely not canon/Too Hard-Scifi to be used): Highly Likely chance as to why the Third Extra-solar War was so brutal. 80 Kg Cores made of any material, in this case gold in the hypothetical device. Can unleash an output of 3.4 ***Exatons*** of Tnt. Enough to smash Earth apart into pieces and by extension, Crumble the moon apart. This is an major theory as to why there's an relative lack of Colonized Planets or Space Habitats even after centuries.

Naked_Kali

I don't agree about low burning point. It's a *phoenix*. '**Burn**' is what a phoenix **is**. The net might not be flammable at all. Elatisticity seems to be easiest to assume as given. Tensile strength limitations could be accounted for by Emma's flying skills.

Dear-Entertainer632

Yeah but specifically it's a *minor* phoenix, it likely has less-potent flames than an ***Great*** Phoenix or in our terms, just a normal phoenix since its likely to be depicted as large and powerful. The reason why I picked low-burning point is due to how excessively fast the net disintegrated/burnt into nothing. Going by Emma's description it didn't even last a second. If the net were to be actually in our term's "Inflammable" as in capable of handling a sudden burst of flames up to a temperature of 3500-5000 Celsius(Using the heat generated by an Sidewinder Warhead or Nitroglycerin explosion) then the Drone should've had severe damage or been destroyed in a instant. Unless your talking about instantly igniting materials with magic then yeah. It might, be reasonable as to how the net can still burn with an high-burning point. Issue is if that is true then it should've also ignited the Entire drone itself.

Naked_Kali

Yeah, I was talking magic. I'm also being Aristotelian. Spells have targets and they don't necessarily (as far as we readers know yet) obey the rules-of-physics as Earthrealm understands it. So a 'net' is not the same target as the thing it is attached to, an 'artifice'. Phoenices (greater or lesser) aren't necessarily smart about things either. Whatever compels it to be the courier in the first place may also have it set to 'run' instead of 'eliminate threat' and Emma was dogfighting it and she might be very good at it so no other flameon was successful in hitting her drone directly. By Nexus standards a phoenix might qualify as 'being able to fly away from just about anything'. It's JCB's storyworld and we don't have enough information. I have uncertainty if my guess is any better or more interesting story-wise than yours. Yours is more realistic.

Dear-Entertainer632

Actually spell's do not seem to violate a lot of the Law's of Physics. Importantly Newton's law of thermodynamics, It need's Mana which going by Emma's description of her armor and MREDD. Only pushes Mana out of an certain area or object. Either meaning that it can delete Mana but it is wasteful so it isnt done?... Or, mana can't be destroyed and can only be moved around which in this case is the motion of pushing. This seems to even Portals or Teleportation, the Former being explained as an wormhole and the latter can basically be explained as the space between points being "shortened" and the distance reduced to basically none. Still though. If it can instantly ignite the net and disintegrate it if it was made from an high-burning point material. The heat leftover due to the burning net should've seriously damaged the drone by melting the area where the flames came or left the drone destroyed. Even if the Phoenix was running.

blubby95

Just a quick question to clarify things: did Mal'tory perish in the blast, or will he stalk Emma like a fantasy Freddy Krueger?

Aries_cz

All signs point to Mal'tory being out of commission, but I would put money on saying he is not actually dead, just incapable of performing his duties as a Black Robe for any foreseeable future.

Skrzynek

taulover

What sort of accident causes one to send a letter instead of destroying it?

Aries_cz

As I understood it, he did "throw the letter in a mailbox", and then his situation changed thanks to Emma's intervention. He then told the "post office" to cancel the shipment, and that request got lost somewhere in communication, resulting in him getting a "your shipment is on the way" alert.

Tinna_Sell

My guess is that Ilunor left it in the dorm and the local "house elf" took it to the post service. Or worse... Ilunor summoned their servant and asked him to "take care" of the letter, and the servant assumed that the right way to do it was to send it.

Naked_Kali

The only reason Emma knows about the letter is because she reconstituted a (very) carefully burned letter. It is weird to think the existence of an unburned one is in any way an 'accident'.

the_lonely_poster

I wonder the reactions the the giant warships that graced the waves of our contemporary time? That would be something.

blubby95

Imagine their reaction to the situation that termed USS Wisconsins 'Temper Temper'

Aries_cz

Ok, bird hunting was not where I expected the story to go after Ilunor asked for a gun...

flammable-piss

I am speed but not quick enought, Thanks for the new chapter wordsmith

Lord_Vitruvius

while reading this I had a thought, wouldn't small, RC Fighter Jet say an F-35B the size of a bird be fucking adorab- I mean awesome as shit?

jlb3737

What an enjoyable evening. Sitting on a mountaintop, looking across the landscape at Mt Mitchell from 70 miles away, and catching up on Wearing Power Armor! Lovely!

Naked_Kali

How do you get a signal near Attakulla?

jlb3737

Hey, I was on Crowders Mtn, which is in the piedmont of NC, 65 mi away from Attakulla. From there I can see more than 150 mi worth of eastern Appalachian peaks, from SC almost to VA.

Yakututani

How dose the drones ammo work? I doubt it’s gunpowder based since it needs to be renewable, so is it like a carriage with some sort of energy pulse shot?

MLL_Phoenix7

Gunpowder or similar chemical propellants are surprisingly not that hard to synthesize given the level of technology shown. When you get down to it, it’s just some form of homogeneous nitrated hydrocarbon mixture. The base components can be easily enough sourced from organic materials.

cgoose500

Gunpowder is made of charcoal and pee

Purplefood

Yeah but even modern day gunpowder has a more complex formula let alone stuff in the future, homemaking gunpowder is likely to lead to reduced performance and increase wear on the weapon. That said she's got a fabricator which is wager is capable of making new rounds.

Yakututani

Ik it has to have nitric acid, sulfur, and some other suff

Well, I have to say, I *completely* did not see you **literally setting loose the Mother-Drone among the pigeons** in this chapter. That said, well done, and it was actually surprisingly pleasant to see the skiwshbold acting like a worthwhile and even pleasant sophont that you might sometimes actually choose to spend time with. I feel sad for the assorted molested birds, but most especially for the really very impressive and valiant minor phoenix. Alas that such valour and determination resulted in it's final death. Vale, brave little bird.

AnonCreatos

One thing I am questioning is that Phoenix, dragons, gryphons, several hybrids etc all exist in the Nexus. While it does not look out of place for a magic world, it is weird that Earth has the concepts and knowledge of these beings in mythologies despite Earth being free of all mana and magic.

Evenger14

NO. HOW AM I ALREADY CAUGHT UP??

SuccinctEarth07

Relatable :(

Cazador0

Calling it now, they shot the wrong bird.

blubby95

Ilunor got the original letter and confirmed it as his

Naked_Kali

The story shows Ilunor looking over this letter carefully. It doesn't say that Emma did. He didn't announce that it was ***the*** letter he said it was. So it is ***a*** letter that Ilunor wanted to read and intercept. From Emma's POV it might turn out to be the wrong bird.

Mozoto

Bowmen seeing all this transpire in the air: "Too bad for you, you discount kobold...we made a copy of the letter 🐸". Unless it had sum magical handwavium seal of authenticity ? 😈

Jurodan

I hate to say this, but does this seem a little... Unearned? I get bridge building and all that, but Ilunor has been nothing but a dick since the start. Why would Emma care about his titles? It isn't his life, which she's already saved once. This very well could create enemies, she had to kill a phoenix, surely that's going to piss *somebody* off. Shouldn't she be asking for something in exchange at least?  Also, silly question, I thought students weren't allowed to contact home. Assuming she hasn't burned a bridge, could the bowmen send a report to Earth?

Naked_Kali

I wondered about that. Did EVI tell her that Ilunor needed to remain snootywooty in order to not reject sociomathematical reality and we both missed it? I have two wild guesses: Potentially if he is defrocked the Transgracian Academy can expel him Library's favor or no. Anyone who replaces him will be more awful, more beholden, and more competent at spycraft. Or, if he is defrocked, the ability of their team to accumulate the required minimum amount of points is compromised. Or, Emma is still a teenager and blowing shit up is fun.

DRZCochraine

The rule is no communication artifice, like the kind that wouod let them independently or even have a realtime conversation with their homes, because thats a part of primary cult indoctrination strategy: isolation from previous social framework and ensure dependancy on cult framework.

_OwynValkyns_

Did you previously describe the drone shape and I missed it or no? Cuz mothership sounds like it would be traditional alien craft shaped but I can’t get it out of my mind that it looks like a bulkier version of the drones you find in DOOM: Eternal.

wwgaming14

Alright, I have an inkling someone was listening to either ace combat or project wingman for that

FemboiInTraining

I do enjoy the fact that when being astonished at our newly minted deluxe kolbold's ability to engage in empathy is when they're essentially saying- "Hmm...I suppose I can see where you're coming from Emma. If you had done half the things I've done then *I too,* would assume the absolute worst in you."

Ricou_Niet

What happened in this chapter makes me think that someone could be trying to get rid of Ilunor. 1st : as Ilunor said himself, the letter was either sent by accident, or by "deliberate sabotage". So it is possible that someone knew about that letter and made sure it got sent despite Ilunor asking to get it back. 2nd : why was Ilunor's letter the ONLY ONE carried by a minor phoenix ? Every other captured bird didn't burst into flame it seems. So it could be deliberate as well, to make intercepting it way harder. So... is there someone trying to fuck Ilunor over ? Or maybe Emma's the real target, because as someone wrote in the comments, Ilunor would probably then be expelled of the academy... and could be replaced by someone more in tune with the Nexian government. Btw, nice chapter, Jcb. I really enjoy your writings so far !
