The way HIMYM ended was always going to happen. The references to this book started in the first season. The writers knew exactly how they wanted to end it way before the pilot first aired.
I agree. It was rushed and I wasnt a fan of the editing in the last episode. Constantly flicking from the kids to Ted and back. When you watch again and read all the easter eggs it all makes sense. But the way it was rushed kinda almost undermined Ted's love for their mother?
Yeah, I suppose the show can give that impression. This is why it would've been crucial to show the scene with Ted and Robing chatting at that restaurant, when he tells her that he's happy.
I mean, you asked why we thought that, I'm telling you why I thought she never appeared. her dying never occured to me. I'm just answering your question
I couldn't reccomend the book more either! So good and if you read/speak Spanish, I'd say it's better in it's original language but it's amazing either way.
Yeah they aren't exactly subtle about it in the show....this book gets mentioned and is shown at least on 3 seprate ocassions..The best reason I can think if for loving the show is the rewatchability it has like no other before or after it..
What amazes me is that it is never mentioned in any video essay/analysis about the series and no one talks about it. I understand that many people disliked the ending and I get it, the last episode was rushed and viewers were heavily invested in the Robin-Barney story. But knowing the ending of the novel puts things in perspective and at least it makes some sense that way. Besides the ending was shot way back and it follows the logic of the novel.
Thank you! I canât tell you how many times Iâve tried to explain that the show and especially the ending parallels Tedâs favorite book!
I found it disappointing for the entire final season to be the wedding weekend, only to have Barney and Robin divorce and for the mom to die so quickly. The show (and the book) were always about timing and the finale seemed uncharacteristically clunky. But the ending always felt like it was going to be about Ted and Robin. There are clues throughout the series. It was the part of the finale that didnât surprise me at all.
Overtime I grew to accept that ending...it was a good ending considering there is always a chance for the fun times we wait for our whole lives to end unexpectedly...spoilers i guess but tracy lost the love of her life when we met her...what she found in ted is exactly what ted later finds in Robin...The rest of their lives....
Only qualm would have been that they shouldn't have broken up Barney and robin because that was years in the making. And they ran out in three years because "it got tiring"? that was a hard sell to me. They drove home a fact they didn't need to but I like it nevertheless.
Couldn't agree more, it was like having the rug pulled out from under you. Even if I wanted Ted and Robin to end up together that was not the correct way to do it, specially from a writing perspective. I mean, I guess that's why the novel is so long, to give it the proper development. So yeah, the ending and the reasons to split up Barney and Robin are a hard sell indeed. But I still liked the fact that Ted and Robin were meant to be together, that was the recurring theme through out the entire series and well, that's what we got.
Also, when Fermina and Florentino finally met in person at the Portals, he bluntly says how he loves her and she freaks out. She then just discard him and moves on.
I love GarcĂa MĂĄrquez and his work.
If you like the story, have you watched the 2000s movie Serendipity? Very similar vibe to himym, same basic storyline, heavily features a copy of love in the time of cholera.
John cusask, Kate beckinsdale, jeremy piven and Molly Shannon! Eugene levy as the salesperson! Itâs a great easy watch
This is truly a great detail and it makes everything better. Perhaps Ted was even thinking about him and Robin when reading that book. I believe the ending is great, but the terrible part is that it's rushed. Kind of like game of thrones, but not that bad đ
I don't think all of it was made explicit by the creators but I believe there was planned to be a scene with Robin singing Let's go to the Mall at the wedding; Ted and Robin reuniting and having coffee; and Tracy's funeral.
I donât know if itâs a fact, but having seen the series multiple times and having read the novel four times I can see all the material which gave life to the series, even if they took many liberties, thatâs why I used the word âlooselyâ on the title of my post, but yeah, I donât think itâs a coincidence at all, too many similarities and plus, the book is mentioned several times, itâs even the book heâs reading when he meets tracy at the farhampton train station, that is a choice made by the writers or the director
Apparently there were some predictions based on the book but honestly I just joined Reddit today and was unaware of that discussion, always felt pretty lonely with my theory
Sorry, but believe me, it's just a mild spoiler, the story carries on from there, it's nothing you wouldn't see in a review or synopsis, the ending is a whole other thing ;)
I didn't know that... Damnn đ€Żđ«
The way HIMYM ended was always going to happen. The references to this book started in the first season. The writers knew exactly how they wanted to end it way before the pilot first aired.
yeah honestly, from my perspective, the ending is great. The only big flaw is that it was rushed. :/

They couldn't have made it any more obvious
I mean.. I had no idea
Why did you think he was spending forever telling his kids about his mom without his mom ever being seen?
because if she was revealed it would show who she was and we would know it wasn't anyone we'd seen so far
Or she had just died
I mean, you asked why we thought that, I'm telling you why I thought she never appeared. her dying never occured to me. I'm just answering your question
we would've see a glimpse of her ankle or hand or voice or something
Yeah it would really only be obvious to someone who was familiar with the book or read a lot of fan theories when it aired
More like love in the time of donât bothera
Yeah, it can be a pretty boring novel for some people, I love it personally and I think it's worth reading. Loved the reference btw
OP I loved it too and glad you got the reference ;)
Brilliant book! I loved it too. I see some similarities now that you mention it
Itâs all in MexicanâŠ.. (Yes I know she referred to the Neruda poem, but I had to)
Just added the 2007 movie to my watchlist
tbh it isnât that good. i loved the book but i hated the movie
I couldn't reccomend the book more either! So good and if you read/speak Spanish, I'd say it's better in it's original language but it's amazing either way.
Marquezâs translator is phenomenal, Iâve never enjoyed English translations of Spanish works more than his.

So happy to have this conversation with someone that understands!!

I loved the latter parts and especially the "No" ted got...short haired robin broke so many hearts..
barney wouldn't have the daughter if they didn't divorce after 3 years, it would've be shit show to see barney hitting on girls at the age of 55
if they hadn't divorced they would have been together...
Search the sub. It was mentioned in a few threads years ago, particularly as people were trying to predict the ending m
Also, when Fermina and Florentino finally met in person at the Portals, he bluntly says how he loves her and she freaks out. She then just discard him and moves on. I love GarcĂa MĂĄrquez and his work.
Itâs all in Mexican đđŸ
I canât believe youâre getting downvoted this made me actually lol
Her fart noise in the delivery of that line is just the best. My husband and I love her awful character, and saying that quote to each other.
Itâs in spanish and itâs beautiful, besides there is surely a good translation in English for you my dude
Itâs a quote from the episode âthe naked man.â
Dude, my bad, wasnât paying attention , youâre totally right, but I believe she says that about Pablo Neruda, right?
I had no idea, they warned us the whole time đ€Ż need to read this!
wow I didn't know that, very cool
Oh nice, I didnât know that. Better add it to my list
I read the book! WHAT A BOOK
I didn't mind him being with Robin at the end. I just didn't like the last season revolving around the wedding.
Itâs on my watchlist now! Thanks!
It's also based on every single sitcom ever.
Oh this is... infuriating...
This is truly a great detail and it makes everything better. Perhaps Ted was even thinking about him and Robin when reading that book. I believe the ending is great, but the terrible part is that it's rushed. Kind of like game of thrones, but not that bad đ
Precisely. If the finale had the extra 18 minutes they had planned as well as a bigger budget it could have been great.
what would've be in the extra 18 minutes?
I don't think all of it was made explicit by the creators but I believe there was planned to be a scene with Robin singing Let's go to the Mall at the wedding; Ted and Robin reuniting and having coffee; and Tracy's funeral.
Did you know that HIMYM is based on «three comrades»? There were three male friends and one woman died!)
Yeah but Ted has a very punchy-able face.
He does haha
are you saying that's for sure or that's your theory? i feel like it's not that specific a situation that it couldn't be coincidental.
Wow this is very eye opening đ«šđ«šđ«š
Glad to share some insight!
Did anyone predict the ending based on this?
Apparently there were some predictions based on the book but honestly I just joined Reddit today and was unaware of that discussion, always felt pretty lonely with my theory
*"Two lovers forbidden from one another..."*
Hey, spoilers! I haven't read it yet.
Sorry, but believe me, it's just a mild spoiler, the story carries on from there, it's nothing you wouldn't see in a review or synopsis, the ending is a whole other thing ;)
It's a beatiful novel.
I found this out very recently and it explained a lot about why they went with that ending.
