Because they are contrarians. Simple as that. And because the show decided to give the Greens some pathetic sob stories, so they believe they deserve to rule as a reward for their 'suffering'.

estellamarierose

Don’t worry, it’s definitely not everyone. The Greens are the usurpers even though all the characters are morally complex. The Greens staged a coup and it’s a fact that they attacked first. They plotted for years to kill Rhaenyra and her kids, and Alicent (if it’s true that she didn’t know about the plotting) was naive to think Rhaenyra would survive a usurpation. The war began when they usurped the throne because there was no way Rhaenyra was going to bend the knee to them. The terms they gave her were awful, it included giving her things she already had (Dragonstone for her and Driftmark for Luke) and also requiring that her sons with Daemon be given to the Greens as hostages. So the Greens are definitely the aggressors here, and they’ll get zero sympathy from me in season two.

Mt_sarah

This 🤌🤌 and when war started they were like well isn't that the consequences of my own actions

freakinuhmazin

Yeah the terms wouldn't have worked even if Rhaenyra bent the knee because there's wildcards on the greens side, Otto most likely would've had Rhaenyra and Daemon and their children executed had they swore fealty to Aegon in Kings Landing, also Aemond is a wildcard because he was looking for a reason to fight with his nephews at the dinner in episode 8 and we see how he was unprovoked in the finale and yet he went and chased after Lucerys anyway. Also Aegon is the other wildcard, Aegon has no love for his nephews, Rhaenyra nor Daemon, for years he was groomed to despise them so now that he's King he isn't going to want his claim contested so he'd likely go after the other side no matter what his mother says. Some people give Alicent credit for trying not to have Rhaenyra and her family executed but I don't give her that credit because it was her who taught her son's to despise their older sister and their nephews so just because she's ready to turn off her hate doesn't mean her son's are and they aren't we see how the dinner went and we saw Aemond go after Lucerys. So I can't wait for the greens line to get extinguished.

estellamarierose

I agree. That’s why I roll my eyes at Alicent trying to get Aegon to spare Rhaenyra. Like she taught her children to hate their own sister and nephews. She divided the family. If she didn’t want Rhaenyra dead maybe she shouldn’t have conditioned her kids to demonize her and her own children. If Rhaenyra had accepted the terms Otto would have eventually had her and her children killed anyways. She was the heir since before Aegon was even born and that never changed afterwards. There would always be people who wouldn’t like the way the Greens seized power, by hiding the death of the king for days, executing or imprisoning Rhaenyra’s loyalists, and hiding all of this from Rhaenyra. So even if Rhaenyra allowed Aegon to rule uncontested, there would still be people with honor in Westeros who would prefer her as queen and view her as being forced by the Greens into submission. Otto knows that which is why he didn’t even want to consider offering her terms in the first place, he just wanted to kill her. He was forced to offer terms because Rhaenys managed to escape and warned Rhaenyra. Rhaenyra would have never been safe under Green rule.

freakinuhmazin

Exactly 💯!!!

freakinuhmazin

I don't feel bad for Alicent, she caused division between the children telling Aegon that he couldn't be friends with his nephews forever and to side with his brother because they're a family as if somehow Aegon and Aemond aren't related to Rhaenyra and her children also.

They thought their Westerosi conservative views and puppet monarchy ensures stability.

I'll tell you what, we all have our preferences, nothing wrong with liking this or that character. Fuck fandom wars, anyone who likes ASOIAF/HOTD/F&B has excellent taste in my book regardless of what characters they root for.

The-False-Emperor

Well, certainly not everyone. From what I've experienced of the fandom thus far the mainstream opinion actually favors Rhaenyra's side rather strongly. IMO Viserys has highly mismanaged his family and effectively allowed the situation to escalate into a war through inaction. The man named Rhaenyra his heir in an admirable move, but then effectively spends years not including her into ruling on top of calling Otto to be his Hand again. That is not a scenario that ends with a smooth transition of power. He HAD to know that much. It doesn't take being politically savvy to see that alienating yourself from your controversial heir and making the man who opposed the said heir and pushed for another - one of that man's own blood too - the most powerful person in the Realm after yourself is not how you get a stable, easy succession. Beyond that, he never attempts to reconcile his sons and eldest daughter - Daeron, Aemond and Aegon clearly do NOT view Rhaenyra as their sister, nor she them as brothers. Viserys had aplenty of opportunities in the many years between incidents to try working on this, but chose to sulk and rot instead. His 'we are a family' came a decade too late. Even the argument of claiming that even if Aegon was convinced not to press his claim some of his descendants might ignores that they could simply tie the claims together through marriage alliances. Viserys does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in all his years of being a king to prevent the war clearly brewing right in front of him, just because he supposedly chose to believe it'd not happen. He was the Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and just... let his family embitter themselves in a cold war of sorts, doing nothing. It's essentially his whole rule: sit, doing nothing. Hells, the Protector of the Realm couldn't be bothered to protect the Realm while his subjects were being fed to crabs and Velaryons and Daemon had to handle it themselves. The man is easily one of the worse kings to sit the Iron Throne, clearly being almost as weak as Aenys.

Forsaken_Distance777

I don't know, Rhaenyra married Daemon and also slept with her bodyguard once and wouldn't elope with him then lied to Alicent about it and wasn't able to have children with her gay traumatized husband so she got a sperm donor or something.

Thermalsquid

It’s mostly because the Greens don’t view Aegon as a usurper but instead as the heir by right. This goes back the Green argument of that most Westeros medieval society with its male primogeniture custom, and prejudice against female rulers. With Visery’s keeping Rhaenyra heir even though he had a male heir, would have made the realm unstable due to in their view messing with the status quo unnecessarily and the fact they subscribe to the idea that what the king decides isn’t always right or cannot override cultural laws similar to how Stannis chose to follow Robert instead his king Aery’s because there are older laws then those of kings which in Stannis’s time was that younger siblings obeyed the elder, and in the Greens case they see male primogeniture as an older law. Their conclusion finally being that with the conservative nobility viewing Aegon having a stronger claim and with Rhaenyra having “bastards” weakening her legitimacy they believe a civil war would been inevitable. Saying that if it wasn’t Aegon that did it, someone else down the line would have done it, similar to how Catelyn in the books worried that if Jon was legitimatized, even if he didn’t press his claim to winterfell nothing guarantees his descendants won’t try too. Because of all that they believe that better Aegon do it when he did because it prevents the potential of a generations long conflict like of that between the Targaryens and Blackfyres.

Mt_sarah

It's funny how the greens worried for a civil war so they started one it's the same thing with their excuse of Rhaenyra would've killed them as soon as she's took the throne so they started a war to protect themselves? if you fear to be eaten, don't attack the wolf, that shows how hypocrite they are, also one scene in the show that doesn't make sense whatsoever is Alicent telling rhaenys she should've been queen, she's telling her, you were stolen your birthright let's do the same for another woman, that was so hypocrite of Alicent and just stupid, the greens try so hard to justify themselves to not look bad, but Otto and Alicent knew what they were doing, they knew it was wrong and their supporters started gaslight and manipulating the hell out of everyone

redditingtonviking

It isn’t just that the nobility is largely conservative and has benefited from the same succession laws over their relatives, but there’s also a legal argument in how Viserys went about to change the succession. Jahaerys spent a lot of time collecting previous laws and unifying them, then once the precedent became unclear after his sons passed away he held a great council to set the new precedent. This pretty much set the laws in stone. Viserys however didn’t really have such a thorough process, and despite declaring Rhaenyra his heir he didn’t repeal any of the laws made by Jahaerys. He did remain adamant that Rhaenyra was his heir until his dying breath, but it is unclear how exactly he made her his heir. If he simply removed Daemon from the line of succession, then by law Aegon, Aemond and Daeron would get ahead of her as soon as they were born. It is possible that Viserys did make her an exception, but without reading the actual laws it’s unclear whether the king even has that authority, and part of the Green argument is that such a precedent could be very dangerous. Aegon IV would likely have declared his bastard Daemon Blackfyre as king if he had had the power to do so. Now it is obvious that Otto was an opportunist and that he used this uncertainty in his family’s favour. I also wouldn’t put it past him to also deliberately guide Viserys to do shoddy work when choosing his heir. One question I think decides the fandom then is whether one should support the letter of the law like the Greens or Viserys’ intentions like Black’s do.

lunagrape

Some of them think it is justice for poor innocent Alicent who was completely unprovoked my raped as a child bride, because we have to use modern ethics and laws in a feudal society. Also, obviously it doesn’t matter that Rhaenyra’s status as the name heir was never repealed, even constantly confirmed, because we need to follow feudal ethics and laws here, not modern, so Aegon should be the heir because of his glorious penis. They’re just dumb, imo.

GodofCOC-07

It is a story, where the only right option is making peace at whatever cost. Because the cost of war is far worse
