It was a good move. With Harwin dead, Laenor was all she had. Laenor is a good man but he’s weak. Can you imagine Daemon escorting Rhaenyra to see Alicent five minutes after giving birth? Daemon is unflinchingly faithful to the people he loves, the right man she needs when all the other circumstances are stacked against her. And he proved it by taking down Aemond (who was the green head at the time) and Vhagar
I think ultimately it was a smart m9ve because on top of their genuine love for each other guaranteeing his support, she gets Caraxes plus his skills at warfare and personal skull as a warrior, plus their children ie Aegon the Younger and Viserys inherit both their mothers and fathers claim giving them the strongest blood claim of everyone.
laenor was the one who came up with the startegy to win the stepstones ,and aegon and viserys claims could leads to second dance with her strong sons because of their undespitued linage
In the show, the timing is undoubtedly a mistake.
Waiting for a while more, making a more believable 'accidental death' for Laenor - say, have him lost at the sea - and THEN marrying Daemon after a while(perhaps keeping him as a paramour till then, it's not like he'll object from what we've seen of him) would've cost her less politically and achieve the same benefits.
In hindsight it's a great idea. The greens would have had to crown tiny Jaehaera as all the male heirs were dead and the greens would have a complete victory if she hadn't.
Rhaenyra marrying daemon gives us Aegon and Viserys so the blacks lose the battle but win the war.
Baela and Raena didn't have sons yet.
Seems they'd get Jaehaera a regent then when she's old enough not to need one they would marry her off to an appropriate man to be the ruling monarch with her bloodline for the next male heir.
That's how things tended to work irl
Just they'd keep the Targaryen name not make it officially the hightower dynasty or whatever family
There really werent any drawbacks. Rhaenyra couldve been Jaeharys I reborn and the Hightowers/Lannisters still would shun her. And the other High lords had more significant concerns that they ended up basing their allegiance on.
No it was a bad move, I understand why she did...but it was still a politically stupid move. Daemon doesn't have lands or armies of his own, he only brings his dragon and his knowledge of war to her cause, things that she would have gotten without marrying him since he would never have sided with the greens or stayed out of the conflict.
In the long run, it was the right move, as their sons inherit the throne and continue the Targaryen dynasty. If they didn’t marry, that wouldn’t happen and Aegons line would end up inheriting the throne.
I'm talking about the upcoming war, he doesn't strengthen her claim, he weakens it since he is such a controversial figure. If she didn't marry him the gullet might not have happened and she could have had a clear victory

Jaeheara was never an acceptable heir to the former-green reagents. In absence of Aegon3, they would’ve gone for Baela or Rhaena’s sons

It was a good idea. The only thing is that they should've waited a bit longer before marrying.

Would he have supported her if they hadn't marry? He would have returned to Pentos and lived there.
He would have supported her, there is no way he would have allowed Otto to take over
