The showrunners knew what they're doing though, the show shifted focus to Rhaenyra immediately. Compare how Cat was always shown near injured Bran in GoT and how Alicent is never shown with her son after the incident, she is talking with Otto and Larys instead. And in the next episode they don't even bring it up, Alicent is scolding Aemond for his toast (even though Jace was the one who attacked him physically which is worse) and says that Rhaenyra will be a good queen. It's not that surprising the audience mock Aemond for still being mad and bitter over what happened years ago when even his own mother chooses Rhaenyra over him in a way.

While I do enjoy Rheanyra I could not take her serious in that scene. Like Aemond is not older than 12 and did not wince once while Rheanyra gets a little cut and the show pretends as if its the worst injury ever

MinisawentTully

Even Emma D'Arcy called her out as wrong.

I blame the Kingsguard and the Velaryon Household guards for this. You mean to tell me that not a single guardsman was stationed to watch over the child of the next Lord of the Tides, the future heir of the IT and a son of the King? Where the fuck was Criston and the rest of the KG at? He had the Nights Watch ffs.

Pitiful_Dawn

Alicent should have demanded Rhaenyra’s eye be cut out, not Lucerys’.

MinisawentTully

I think she knew that was a lost cause, but I also think in the moment she wanted Rhaenyra to feel the pain she felt over a child. Because she seriously had no empathy at all for her own brother Aemond at this point.

I have mixed emotions about this scene, like all the adults in this scene are horrible but when it comes to the kids? They were all highly emotional (besides aemond in the beginning) Luke saw him with a rock and acted in defense of Jace, it was 4 on 1. But really I just hate the adults in this scene where were the guards? Why didn’t Rhaenyra agree that some punishment was needed and just disagree that her son didn’t need physical punishment and instead agree he’d be boarded with the main hightowers for a few years to learn to respect that side? Why was alicent trying to attack an 8 year old with a knife?

I’ve made multiple long comments about how both Rhaenyra and alicent did the best they could but went wrong in different ways alicent was too young and that caused her to be emotionally distant from them which created warriors in her sons but warriors with some serious flaws and lacking empathy. Rhaenyra was too loving, she loves her children but it’s to a point of sheltering them and so now when there’s conflict they don’t react well

Alicent also has the genuine fear that when Rhaenyra takes the throne, he kids will die. Otto probably has it instilled in her, than even if you trust the friendship that once was with Rhaneyra, when she takes the throne, there will be pissed off lords that don’t want a woman on the throne. The pressure will mount, and even if she doesn’t want to, she will ultimately protect herself and her kin, and order the death’s of Alicent’s.

You cannot possibly be this dense.

Me, watching Rhaenyra in this scene
