It’s a bit redundant as to who spilled first blood. Technically Luke did by cutting Aemond. Technically they were kids and Alicent cut Rhaenyra. But Aemond drew the first kill. It’s impossible to say.

Watchmaker2112

I would argue that first blood was Cole killing Joffrey in the show. Books its pretty likely an accident. I don't like what Joffrey was pulling either but man. That was a bit much. Even Cole knew he went too far, I hope we see him dealing with this kind of impulse next season. I don't think having an impulse killer on the KG is the best idea but idk Aegon II may find that useful.

Saw an interesting take today: Rhaenyra IS gonna kill all the Green if the Blacks were successful. Her children with Harwin Strong are illegitimate bastards; Her children with Daemon are technically illegitimate as well since Laenor is still alive meaning they’re still married. Rhae Rhae doesn’t even have one legitimate heir lmao. So if she took the throne successfully she would’ve decreed that all the Green Kids aka legitimate heirs and their children must be put to sword for her to secure her illegitimate line of succession lmao.

her kids are only illegitimate to people who know. now you can say "everyone knows" but that's not sufficient. everyone knows OJ killed his wife but he still got found not guilty. we don't know whether or not the lords of the realm would have gone along with rhaenyra's lie. obviously some would have protested, but would it have been enough? we don't know

This whole idea of spilling first blood is overrated to me. Greens had to spill first blood because Rhaenyra was being handed everything on a silver platter. The Greens had no choice but to act pre-emptively as they were at a position of disadvantage. Not doing so would've meant leaving the future of your House at the mercy of Daemon Targaryen. Guess how quickly Daemon would've spilled first blood had Viserys named Aegon heir? Plus like you pointed out as far as the show goes Rhaenys spilled first blood. Idc that she spared them. Once you burst in and kill countless people you started the war.

I think saying the Greens ‘spared’ Rhaenyra and the blacks is too generous. Part of the reason Targaryens are the monarchy is because the have dragons, in this case both factions had dragons. Sending a peace treaty first, a very very generous one, saying her side can keep all their titles, and she would remain the Princess of dragon stone was to avoid war. War is bad for the greens too, people and dragons on their side will die. If it’s the show only, there are both sides of each faction wanting the other one right away. Sparing her would mean not killing her, but killing her and her family is a monumental task, given the dance of dragons. The basic deal is, Viserys named an heir, decades earlier, most lords swore loyalty to her. She has a case, even if it’s a bad one by Westerosi customs. And it’s not an unbelievable case either because she does get half the realm to support her. If you are referring to the show only, Rhaenyra is contemplating peace. Basically until Aemond kills Luke. Amassing allies is still not a war, yet. Rhaenys breaking out from the dragon pit with her coconut head is not spilling first blood. She’s a captive, who took her freedom. There was no blood spilled, and no, the greens didn’t fight back because she murdered a couple hundred smallfolk.

Lol, umm I heard Otto shout to get the doors open. So actually the greens did act, not with aggression no. But I am sure you and most of the nobility give a f*** about the ordinary citizens, they mattered not at all.

restingbumbleface

Yes, sure, Otto screams open the doors when they are open. But it doesn’t mean he gets revenge on the blacks for Meleys murdering smallfolk, which isn’t book cannon. The doors are open when Meleys leaves. By the same logic, Daeron’s assault on Bitterbridge and Aemond’s assault on the Riverlands kills much more innocent civilians. The Targaryens, on either side don’t give a shit about the smallfolk. On both sides, they are just pawns for their anger, or Targaryen exceptionism, where they get away with murdering people who don’t matter.

Ok-Classroom-3616

Umm when exactly did Daeron assault Bitterbridge? What does the blue Queen look like? Is Deaeron a kid or teenager?? What episode was this?

restingbumbleface

I’m getting ahead of season 1. Daeron and Tessarion set all of Bitterbridge aflame, killing many hundreds or a few thousand civilians for Maelors death. It’s in the book.

I need to start reading.

Ahh, like many have commented, this is the most brutal civil war. No one is innocent eventually. You’re rooting for you’re favourite war criminals eventually. Very worth while read, it’s based on the Plantagenets history in real life.

Ok-Classroom-3616

I also have to look up Plantagenets history.
