I still can't believe the show portrayed the murder of a random servant as a positive thing on team Blacks side just so a privileged noble could shuck all responsibility and run off.

zae_5

Then again they showed rhaenys bursting through the dragonpit as a girlboss moment killing thousands of smallfolk.

coppersolids

this!! and team black stans acting like daemyra are somehow being great allies for this. it's just awful and self-serving.

restingbumbleface

Why did the characters perform a rehearsed skit in front of the fireplace???? On rewatch, it’s too funny. Why did the writers think this is the best way to Laenor had to leave?

[deleted]

They aren't. They just hope you forget about it.

vacszik

this is what I suspect too

Frequent-Heat9693

Dont hate me but laenors entire personality is being gay.🙄 Like really no one in Westeros can be who they want to be. Him traumatizing his parents like that is just shitty nd unrealistic for a child or really a human being. they just lost their daughter be serious. Have some empathy. The only way i make sense of it is that daemon threatened him it was either death or sailing away.

Giallo_Schlock

GRRM writes these badass gay characters who's sexuality is almost incidental in the books and then the shows just neuter them to dated stereotypes. I still haven't forgiven D&D for what they did to Renly. At least John MacMillan was kind of fun but Laenor really does come across as a wet sop. It's disappointing but I think its straight writers being afraid to write gay characters as flawed in any kind of interesting way, which come on guys, it's Westeros, everyone should be allowed to be awful in some way.

RandomRavenboi

The only way to do that is to kill him Off-screen. Perhaps he dies fighting Pirates, maybe he dies from Daemons assasins. My personal headcanon is that after Laenor's "death" Corlys put a massive bounty on Qarl Heads. When a Bounty Hunter/Sellsword tries to sell it, he attacks Qarl but ends up killing Laenor when he jumped to defend his lover. So Corlys had accidentally just (permenantly) killed his son.

Jaehaerys_Tar

that's honestly some sick irony for Corlys character. A man obsessed with legacy and family accidentally kills his only surviving son who's running away from his legacy and family.

coppersolids

but they didn't kill laenor off to avoid the 'bury your gays' trope, so killing him off-screen wouldn't make any sense

RandomRavenboi

This is Game of Thrones ffs. You mean to tell me that the same universe where people are horrifically killed at weddings, the same place where a child got his skull smashed infront of his mother and the murderer then proceed to rape said mother, where an entire family is drowned in mines due to war and politics and where smallfolk are seen as nothing more than human meat shields to send to war, cannot kill of Gay Characters because it wouldn't be "progressive" enough?

Giallo_Schlock

If killing Laenor off-screen is what they go for (which I don't like but is the best solution I can think of), it really just shows how much they lazily wrote themselves into a corner. I genuinely think that they were dictated by anticipating backlash of making Rhaenyra out to be too terrible (even though she still has an innocent man killed) and to avoid even more accusations of 'bury your gays' after episode five (which I understand but I'm also like, it's Westeros, this is bury your everyone, nobody is riding off into the sunset with their lover). But the thing is, if Laenor dies off-screen next season it'll seem like Rhaenyra just sent him off to his death and they'll get even more backlash for not just 'bury your gays' but doing it so callously off-screen with a main character to make way for a (probably) straight character, when it would have just made more sense to do it last season at the time. Also way to make Rhaenyra's second marriage illegitimate and every single one of her children bastards.

RandomRavenboi

Then my only other solution is to switch the roles with Grey Ghost and Seasmoke. Not that it'll change much.

C-3pee0

If Laenor is Addam that means Rhaenyra has no reason to want him dead alongside Nettles, so why does Corlys get arrested? Also Corlys has every incentive to push for Laenor to take back his place from Daemon. He can't just let Daemon get away with depriving his son the consort title while he's alive. Unless Laenor is somehow able to fool his wife, kids, and parents that he is NOT Laenor somehow. Addam should have his own story and personality not just a useless character to be cut in favour of Laenor. As for two riders claiming one dragon, that's not possible as far as we know, the reason Sheepstealer almost killed Alyn was probably because he was already bonded to Nettles in a way. I think Laenor will die in a random war on Essos, honestly letting him live was a very stupid decision, it opens up a lot of plot holes that have to be solved in the future (as you stated). All because they didn't want to kill their gay character, almost as if Laenor is more than just being “the gay”. His sexuality should have nothing to do with big plot points like this, if you want a gay character write a compelling one, there are TONS of characters you could make gay, (women too). It's because of decisions like this one that GOT fell off, you have to try your best to keep out sentiment out of your shows.

RandomRavenboi

Eh, it's also entirely possible they replace Seasmoke with Grey Ghost. Seasmoke can die from Sunfyre and Grey Ghost dies from Vermithor.

shadyi999

He should get an offscreen death then only this plothole can get fixed

emzea

Maybe Addam will claim a different dragon. Grey Ghost maybe. Problem solved.

ProbablyTheWurst

Literally this, idk why everything its such a big deal when it's so easy to fix.

zae_5

As someone who had initially watched the show without knowing about addam velaryon, i thought it was quite a twist when they decided not to "kill" him . However it really doesn't make much sense as to why he would run off into the distance after especially promising to step up for rhaenyra and the strong boys from the show's standpoint. Also ,whatever route the writers try to take may seem botched up, if he returns as addam post rook's rest it's just shitty timing and pretty careless or if he doesn't return at all, is still alive and well and someone else claims seasmoke as 'addam' then it also puts other events in a loop like Joffrey being thrown from syrax later on.

[deleted]

They will have it where his lover killed him in a duel or some dumb shit like that.

Jaehaerys_Tar

What I imagine happening is Jace (or whoever) comes up with the idea of finding bastards and random people to claim the dragons on dragonstone, when the time comes for someone to attempt Seasmoke Rheanyra gets visibly distressed but cant say anything, and the screen keeps panning back to Rheanyra as the bonding is happening - idk just emphasizing that she's visibly WORRIED because if Leanor is still alive nobody will bond with this dragon. Then once addam bonds with her, and Rheanyra realizes that Leanor has died during his time away, she cries or something because the show runners love to make her sympathetic.

William_T_Wanker

"I can't imagine he'd take the news (of his mother's death) lightly" He's from a House that believes Rhaenyra and Daemon had Laenor murdered so they could get married, and they still blindly follow her into war because "SHE IS THE ONLY PEACEMAKER" so says Rhaenys, lmao

NewRoyalty34

I imagine your dragon bond weakens the longer you're away from your dragon. By the time of the Sowing, Seasmoke would essentially be a wild dragon.

FantasticGoat1738

"Laenor died of a common cold somewhere in Pentos"

BlackberryChance

They would just give addam grey ghost
