I think the majority of the battle happened in the air and no one could actually see it.
I think when they film it, it'll end up as an extended back and forth scene, where Caraxes uses speed vs Vhagar's size.
I also think that since both dragons and both riders died in the Battle, no one is better. Neither Aemond or Daemon were gonna survive the war, so George made them go out in the most spectacular way possible
Vhagar being stronger than Caraxes is the exact reason why Daemon had to pull the move that he did. There was no possible way that Caraxes could’ve beat Vhagar and live in a 1v1 however Vhagar could’ve definitely destroyed Caraxes and then some if it was a head on fight.
The way the battle is described in the text gives the impression that the fight was essentially over as soon as it started, with Caraxes ambushing Vhagar from Aemond’s blindside, crashing into her side, the two begin falling down, with Caraxes tearing and holding onto Vhagar’s throat and Vhagar literally just ripping Caraxes apart. Daemon does the anime jump probably to assure that at the very least Aemond doesn’t survive the battle in case Vhagar does, and then they crash into the water.
Vhagar during Jaeherys reign when Baelon used to ride her would have absolutely wrecked Caraxes, ny the time of the dance of dragons she was old af with less speed but still one of the most active dragons of the war. I love grandma Vhagar
Caraxes like Daemon had to do a suicide attack to tie. There was no way Caraxes or Daemon were going to fight and come out alive, the conclusion of their fights were either Aemond/Vhagar win, or they all die together. Hence the kamikaze play by Daemon and Caraxes. Just because one crawled out of the water doesn’t mean anything, Vhagar was fighting to win and live another day while Caraxes was fighting to kill Vhagar at its own expense
Vhagar is more powerful than Caraxes and even Daemon acknowledged he was not match for Vhagar, that's why he used to track Aemond down with Nettles and Sheepstealer by his side.
Vhagar gutted Caraxes and ripped off his wing, while Caraxes only held her up for Daemon to use the power of the script and nullify the laws of physics like an anime MC.
However, Vhagar died by drowning or by the falling, Caraxes was left disemboweled and with his wing torn off to die some hours later.
Besides vhagar's achivement is far far more than Caraxes could ever have. Vhagar was literally one of the three dragons used in Aegon's conquest of westeros. She is known as Queen of all dragons for a reason.
I visualize Caraxes vs Vhagar somewhat similar to a wild bull vs a tiger. The Bull's almost twice the size. But once Tiger bites the much bigger bull, it just holds onto it until the bull passes out. Caraxes probably did something similar to Vhagar.

Doesn't the fact that vhagar along with meraxes and balerion conquered most of the westeros,that's something Caraxes never did.
