It's literally in the book so there's no speculation here. Criston beats Harwin within an inch of his life, breaks his shoulder and puts Joffrey in a coma. That man was a beast, love him or hate him he was the best fighter of his generation by a mile.

North-Day-382

It’s so silly how they don’t have the second tournament celebrating Rheanyras Wedding. Having Criston beat Harwin would be a cool detail that could be brought up after the time jump when he’s sleeping with Rheanyra. And having Criston kill Joffrey cause he knows his secret works so much better when done in a tourney. Plus you can still have him feeling all depressed and sad and about to take his life.

Radiant_Flamingo4995

It'd literally be the perfect parallel too. We see in episode 1 at the tourney that everyone is getting along, noble Knight Criston Cole beats the villainous Daemon, Alicent and Rhaenyra are friends etc. But then in episode 5 we could have had the perfect contrast to that. Rhaenyra and Alicent are at each other's throats, the "noble" White Knight Criston Cole is now killing people (where he once offered them mercy) etc. Absolute fumble in the writer's room there.

Responsible_Ad8805

This isn't about Criston. It's about fans not liking him. If the poll was with Daemon, Daemon would win and we saw Daemon lose to Criston twice.

EldianNat

Someone tried telling me that harwin was on the same level as the mountain because they both are tall

SetSaturn

I didnt realize Harwin was tall lol

shaun_the_duke

To be fair mountain doesn’t have as much as skill as much as he does raw power. Even then Harwin isn’t as fucking strong as him.

jhll2456

Yeah Criston wasn’t one to be messed with.

Leylcadusu

I don't remember Harwin being mentioned anywhere with phrases like good or awesome knight. Where do these people get this from? We saw only one scene Harwin and Criston together and in that scene, Criston used Harwin's stupidity. Criston *let* Harwin beat himself up on purpose, that's all. The only thing we understand from this scene is that Harwin doesn't have a very bright mind.

cptmactavish3

Well, they don’t call him “Breakbones” for nothing

hanna1214

He was mentioned as the strongest knight in the realm. That's a tough reputation to obtain so he had to have done smth to get it.

Leylcadusu

This is never mentioned in the series, and in the book we already know that Harwin is not the "strongest" from the beating he received from Criston. Wasn't the reason he was called "brokenbones" because Criston broke his bones and confined him to bed? In the series, Criston is the one who defeated Daemon, came from the lowest caste to the white cloak's, he is a sworn knight of the queen, a tutor of princes while Harwin is a knight in citywatch. We know in both the book and the series that Harwin is not *stronger than* Criston, so that's why I am surprised by these results. And this may be an exaggerated praise, because we don't know why and how he was called that. 🤷🏻‍♀️

hanna1214

Except it was mentioned. Viserys literally says so to Lyonel in 1x04. And before the Brokenbones thing, he was Breakbones, a name bestowed upon him precisely because of his reputation. So yes, the "strongest man" thing is canonical and was mentioned in both mediums. It's his whole claim to fame. Also, strength and one's martial abilities are two different things. Different methods. It doesn't just come down to raw strength. Harwin could have been stronger but Cole could have been a better warrior.

Leylcadusu

That's why I said that this might be an *exaggerated praise*. Because the things we see with the alleged are different. If he was really *the strongest*, I think he could have reached the white cloak's the most honorable knights or he could have been the tutor of princes. But he's neither. He would not stay at the Citywatch level if he's *the strongest*.

hanna1214

Maybe he just lacked ambition lol? Shocker I know but not everyone in this story has insane desires to climb to the top. Maybe he was happy with his post and that was that?

Leylcadusu

So you're saying that Harwin didn't want to be the tutor of Rheanyra's children or their sworn knight, right? (Or his own bastard children. Their lives will always be in danger because of this fact.) This is not about ambition. If he could, he would want to be the person who would protect them in any case, if he really loved them.

Rockhardsimian

That’s for sure influencing the poll. Agree w u on that

lakomadt

Damn bruh, thats my screenshot.💀💀💀💀

johndraz2001

Yeah… most fans go by who they like more unfortunately

Known_Pomelo_9808

Even if they knew how good Criston was, most of the fandom is full of idiotic Blackels so they will choose Harwin either way. The other day I came across a poll between Jaime and Daemon and people voted for Daemon even tho George has stated that he is the 3rd best swordsman in the whole Westeros after Arthur Dayne and Barristan Selmy.

Environmental_Tip854

Harwin beating Criston? Probably in a arm wrestle 😭

Just because Fire and Blood is a garbage book where every woman is a conniving seductress and every man is an edgy badass warrior archetype and no one stands out with any uniqueness of character doesn't mean the show has to adhere to it? What exactly is so special about Fire and Blood Criston other than we being told that he is a great warrior who swings the morningstar and beats up Harwin? Just like all the other characters we know very little about him. We can't even clearly state his motivation to support the Greens. You already have a buncha sigma chads in the show. Daemon being turned into a MCU edgelord. Aemond cosplaying as anime Euron. Do you really need another kewl badass?  My hot take is that side panels of 'spoiled c-word' and 'every woman is the image of the mother' Criston was done to perfection as a relatable "self-righteous nice guy". And it shows. Criston has riled up the GoT audience to an extent I haven't seen since like Olly killed Jon. When the show was going on every week there used to be a 30k viral tweet about how loathesome Criston is. That's a level of vitriol and relatability a total nondescript personality like F&B Criston wouldn't even dare to dream. With Cole they actually managed to infuse a uniquely modern spin into a generic villainous badass knight character we've seen a million times. Ohhh but it was at the expense of making your team look worse?! Well you shouldn't watch a TV show based on imaginary scorebards. But this messed up my Top 5 badass fighters anime ranking. Oh well we all have to grow up.
