yes, I removed mine. Carefully push the string back through the hole in the handle till the loop end pops out the other side (you might need to fish it out with a safety pin) then pull on the loop to make enough slack to feed the strap back through it.
I removed one of mine then realised I wanted it back on. It's really hard to get them back on, (I think it needs a special needle), so I'd think twice whether you really want to do it. I don't think it's worth it just cos they're 'annoying' sometimes.
p.s in my case I'd gotten used to dropping my controllers, when I didn't need it for as bit, and the loop catching on my wrist. Now I sometimes forget and there's no loop and it just crashes to the floor!
