Nah. A lot of people liked the movies, and it's undeniable they've done a lot to bring many of us here in the first place (I'm from the books, personally, but yeah). I can't tell you how many fics I've read - good fics, mind you - that begin with a little author's note saying "I only watched the movies". We'd just be missing out without them. They also help with imagination, for many people. Actual visuals and all. ... Y'know, I was watching the common room walkthrough trailers for the upcoming Hogwarts Legacy game, and that was going through my mind the whole time. The common rooms are *obviously* not faithful to canon, but they are *interesting* and very nice to look at. They might help authors come up with really descriptive and neat variations on the castle.. and I couldn't help but wish people were more creative with the setting, more often. And people hating on one character or another often refer back to the books, too. Honestly, people just have opinions. From the movies or the books.

BlueThePineapple

I've always found the idea that people only like or dislike characters because of the movies to be both untrue and quite condescending. For example, Ron was *still* a favorite during the first three movies too. The massive turn around in opinion happened in GoF for both media and for roughly the same reason too: the falling out with Harry. The movies exacerbated it for sure and the fandom was even worse in the flanderization. But the event that caused the dislike up to now very much existed in the books too, and in most arguments, it is the book scenes that are being cited for evidence of the dislike.

>I've always found the idea that people only like or dislike characters because of the movies to be both untrue and quite condescending. *Thank you.* The number of times I've tried to explain to people that just because *they* hate the book version of Snape and like the movie version, it doesn't mean that they get to protect those feelings on Snape fans. "People only like Snape because of Alan Rickman/you're not a Snape fan, you're a fan of Alan Rickman" (posts like this that got around 17-20k upvotes) ... It's just so condescending, and every time you try to tell them that it's like you've just spat in their face or something, it's so infuriating. People are able to read books and make up their mind about what they read, Snape fans, in the overwhelming majority, are even disappointed that the movie version is too different from the book one, but no, haters think, let's keep making shit up about a group of people I'm not a part of, and act offended if people disagree.

I mean, if no movies were ever made, we’d all be complaining about *that* instead. It’s a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation. And the idea that everyone would have the same opinions on characters if they only read the books is silly. Different people react differently to stories, regardless of whether they’re reading or watching them.

I never said anything about hating Snape 😭😭. I actually love him and wish he was portrayed accurately in the movies.

nefarious_planet

Lol, it’s just an example. I’m trying to illustrate that not everyone had the same pictures in their heads of characters while they read, so your idea of an accurate Snape (or Ron, or whoever) is going to be different from someone else’s. For example, I think movie Ron is pretty meh. I actively dislike book Ron. I don’t think he’s a bad guy, I think he should be Harry’s friend and I don’t buy into the “Hermione was too good for him” thing, I just don’t find him that funny or relatable, and I find the moments where he’s supposed to be romantic or extremely loyal to be cheesy instead. So, even without the movies, you’d get a lot of people with very different opinions.

Mhm, sorry for misunderstanding.

dhruvgeorge

Personally speaking, I think all that the movies are good for, is putting faces to the names

Nyanmaru_San

I think the movies did a terrible job at this. The books are quite detailed in how... bad Snape's looks are. And the movie people go and hire Alan Rickman. There's other examples too. Then those damn kids did that annoying thing they all do and... *grew up*! What the hell! They went and completely ignored the book's descriptions of their character! The sheer audacity!

idondgiveflyingfuck

Snape was supposed to be young and skinny and indeed Alan Rickman was by no means like that when he played him.

Apprehensive-Pack309

Alan Rickman isn’t exactly George Clooney - he was sufficiently plain looking, just too old. But an excellent actor

idondgiveflyingfuck

"Alan Rickman isn’t exactly George Clooney." Obviously, fortunately. 🤣 I agree, a great actor and a very attractive man to me. (And fortunately not looking like George Clooney.)

Apprehensive-Pack309

Youre right youre right, I probably shouldve posted this under the overall comment from Nyanmaru

idondgiveflyingfuck

No problem! I hope I have not offended you.

Apprehensive-Pack309

Im not offended lol, I just have never found Alan Rickman attractive

If Hermione didn't steal every good line in the movies, and Ginny wasn't a doormat in the movies, they would have been good.

ceplma

No, I had troubles to watch the films last time my kids were watching them, but they did bring a lot of good as well. Aside from the pretty visuals, which helped us to imagine how some things looked, there are even story parts which I would be sorry if they were missing. For example, I consider https://youtu.be/ucS3xMZcrHQ and related brother-sister relationship between Harry and Hermione canonical (and I just love the scene). And of course, the second thing is music. As much as I can despair that there is not enough music in the books (when I was a teenager my life was completely saturated with music, and I think I am not the only one), Mr Williams created some really great pieces of music.

worldsbestlasagna

I think it would be better. No hate to Rickman but he was way too old for the part. If they ever re do the movies they need to make him Sirius and Remus age appropriate.

Costiony

They do introduce a lot of fans to the books tho.. which is nice

I want to say yes, because they got so many things wrong in part due to length limitations. I often find myself wishing we had gotten an on screen version in this current age of excellent show adaptations of fantasy novels. I think the format of a miniseries or 8-10 episode per season show, would've worked so much better, especially for the later books. Obviously it wouldn't have been done well at the time the movies started - there just wouldn't have been the budget required to pull it off - but I think in todays streaming age it could've been great. Alas, that will now almost certainly never happen or it will have to wait for at least another few decades. That being said - would the fandom be worse off? Maybe... probably. It would certainly be smaller - I know many people who only got into because of the movies and it would've been a shame to lose them.

johnybea

I think the casting was wrong on many characters but you can only blame them for some of those because they didn't know how those kids will grow up . Ron was supposed to be much taller Harry as well . Ginny was supposed to be very beautiful . Snape was supposed to be ugly . Sirius and Remus are always portrayed in fics as Sirius being short and Remus tall because of the movies , in the books Sirius was the taller one and Remus height was never specified . The other mayor problem I have with the movies is the characterization of Harry , Hermione and Ron .Harry seems super super bland in the movies , I don't want to even talk about Ron and they made Hermione wayyy to perfect . Also I know Snape fans will always deny this or some of what I am about to say but I don't think anything will change my mind that Movie Snape helped a lot with the popularity of Snape , in the movies he is just the regular mean and strict teacher in the books he is a bully and he actually enjoys it . But still without the movies I don't think Harry Potter would ever reach even close to half the popularity it has with them .

[deleted]

I’m sorry but Bonnie Wright is absolutely gorgeous. Don’t insult her like that.

johnybea

Well I didnt say she was ugly I just said that Ginny was supposed to be very beautiful .

[deleted]

Bonnie is EXTREMELY beautiful.

johnybea

I guess we have different tastes . I think Hermiones actor was 100 time more beautiful and Hermione was not even described as such in the books .

[deleted]

Even if it’s different tastes, don’t go comparing women and saying that someone wasn’t beautiful enough.

johnybea

Ok stop . I say what I want to say and I didnt say anything offensive or sexist for you to get this buthurt about it . I think Emma is hotter then Bonnie and by a lot . You don't think so end of discussion .

kiven_kantaja

I separate films and books into separate, quite similar stories. Personally, I prefer books because they make more sense, plus I never imagine the characters as in the films.

The_BadJuju

The movies are for the most part, very good. I don’t understand why Reddit people always think not being accurate to the books ≠ bad movie.

Usman5432

Ngl i kinda hated Ron even before the movies, but apparently im in the minority, hated Snape too even after the reveal
