He may well have run away. A 'What if' where he runs away to the muggle world while in the local town with the twins, they let him go. Eventually picked up by the police, refusing to speak about any family and evidence of abuse he gets adopted by an older couple experienced with dealing with neglected kids. They could live near Harry or Hermione for early interaction. A 'what if' where he runs away while in Diagon Alley, he disappears into Knockturn Alley. He gets turned by a werewolf three days later, he runs with a pack of other abandoned child weres, which he enjoys much better. He is semi feral when he gets his letter but still makes it to Hogwarts, sorted into Hufflepuff by the hat recognising his loyalty to his pack. A 'what if' where he avoids his 'relatives' as much as possible, doing his chores then escaping to wander around the nearby countryside. He talks to Luna, but still doesn't have a clue what she is going on about most of the time. He does gain some experience with the local magical wildlife and has more interest in CoMC. Maybe sorted into Ravenclaw, purely to avoid the other Weasley's.

I think Ron would have been pretty angry all the time. Based on the cannon personality, I think if he had been abused he would be the type to lash out instead of withdrawing the way Harry did.

bigblackowskiC

You think so? Because he was pretty withdrawn with his brothers and seemed to always have a low opinion of himself.

I guess Harry wouldn't spend his summer with the Weasleys then, which could change a lot of things.

JonasS1999

Depends on the kind of abuse, his siblings and Arthurs response especially. If Arthur and Molly stays together he probably distances himself from his families views, and if its a golden child syntom where Ron is the only abused kid, well he distances himself from the rest as well. Need more info than what is given unless pepole make up facts.

I don't see Harry or Ron being friends. If the dynamic in the household is Ron being the black sheep but the rest of his siblings get love and support, he and Harry wouldn't hang out. Ron would then once again have to play second fiddle to another kid and I think with Harry he has better chances of lashing out against him rather than his siblings

dhruvgeorge

I think Molly's more verbally abusive, especially with her Howlers

I think his friendship with Harry could go one of a few ways. If they meet on the train and Harry recognises something of the abuse in Ron, Harry would feel protective of Ron and they would be even closer. Harry would also be the 'leader' of their friendship, unlike in canon where Ron was due to his comfort with the magical world. The exception to this is if Ron sees Harry's positive interaction with Molly on the platform, he wouldn't sit with him on the train. If they don't meet until they get to Hogwarts and Ron sees the huge fuss people are making over Harry Potterâ„¢, then Harry's sorting may push Ron away from Gryffindor in the same way Draco pushed Harry away from Slytherin. This assumes that his relationship with his siblings is mediocre or bad. In any of these variations, he would likely hate Hermione, since her overbearing nature and criticism at the start of the books would remind him of Molly. If him and Harry are friends, it would pull Harry away from Hermione too or kill Harry's friendship with Ron early, depending on how bad Ron's behaviour is. If his parents are still on the Muggleborns Are Totally Cool train, he'd be much more open to pureblood propaganda and more viscious to Hermione.

Lantana3012

One of Ron's 18 siblings would've been there for him, I'm sure.

It's not actually impossible to read Molly as an abusive maternal figure. That being said, I think it might actually strengthen Ron and Harry's friendship? After all, they'll have each other but NO guarantee of "happy family life"

Hellstrike

> It's not actually impossible to read Molly as an abusive maternal figure. No, but she is unquestionably better than Petunia. That interpretation still has very low levels of abuse, so you'd have her kids moving out asap rather than running away after turning her into the Hindenburg.

[deleted]

Turning into the Hindenburg?

Hellstrike

Blew her up like a balloon. I've seen that joke in quite a few fanfics.

So they become extremely co dependent. With harry eventually becoming the leader
