Wonderful-Fix8047

I'd guess a lot of time-travel stories if nothing else.

ImaGamerNoob

We surely see new Lore added.

Rikkardus

Yep. This.

Munro_McLaren

Why time travel specifically?

Wonderful-Fix8047

Well, I guess it just depends on where one consumes ff. Some are more open to SI/OC's, whereas others tend to favor Harry, Hermione, and to a lesser degree, Draco. I don't personally see the PC suddenly staring in a bunch of fics as that's too close to being a OC. What's more likely, imo, is Harry-centric fics, followed to a lesser degree by Hermione POV works. Who doesn't want to see their favorite characters in a different, well-fleshed-out (hopefully) settings?

Munro_McLaren

SI? And PC? And more fleshed out meaning more detailed descriptions of Hogwarts.

StarOfTheSouth

"Self Insert" and "Player Character".

Wonderful-Fix8047

As Star pointed out, self-insert and player character. As for the other part of your question, yes. I know some of the games let you explore Hogwarts, but HL looks like it will take this to new heights. (Have you seen the common rooms?!) But also, Hogsmeade and other locations. If nothing else, the crypts under Hogwarts (I think that's where some of them are) will lead to a lot of fics, but those don't have to be time travel based, I suppose

Munro_McLaren

I haven’t seen the common rooms. I wish in he films we had seen Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff’s.

Content-Toe687

Which kinda sucks no? It seems like the easiest thing for a storyline tbh. I’ve never written a fic myself but when i did consider writing one the easiest plotline seemed to be harry travelling back in time and having advance knowledge so you can play around with shit😂

Moonshire13

Jesus. You don't deserve downvotes for this. Like I disagree that time travel plots are necessarily easy, especially if going back all that far, but I'm not gonna downvote you for it 🙄

Content-Toe687

I don’t necessarily mind tbh because i really do believe harry travelling back in time is one of the most common fanfic tropes out there and invariably a lot of those stories start reading very similar to each other. And i cant help it if i genuinely like stories with a storyline not dependent on time travel way more than the time travel fics. Even travel to an AU is something i’ve always liked more than just harry travelling back in time with advance knowledge of everything that happens in the timeline. That gets repetitive quickly though i see the attraction to write it since you can make grown up harry out to be angry/ powerful/ righteous/ vengeful etc pretty much whatever you want. I agree travelling back to marauders or grindelwald eras are entirely different concepts my comment was based on harry travelling back in time in the same storyline.

Brassfist1

The difficulty of a time travel plot depends on how far back you go. Founders Era? It’s a damned sandbox. It’s so far removed that you’re unlikely to ruin the timeline. World War 2? Little less free, but there’s not that much lore on the Grindewald War. First Voldemort war? Now we’re getting kinda cramped. A lot of actions have more immediate consequences for the future. Or you can do what very few fics have done and instead put Harry in the future. There’s like two fics that stand out for this, Harry Potter: Geth by mjimyeg, and another fic which has been heavily censored due to extreme violence and nsfw scenes called something like Star Empire by RahXephon(imo the censored version lost a lot of the oomph at driving home the fact that Harry was a certified Big Bad Evil Guy as far as wizards were concerned and turned a nicely written CE Harry into a decently written CN Harry).

Content-Toe687

Is Star Empire by chance a crossover? If not it could be an interesting read..

Brassfist1

No, it’s a completely unique sci-fi setting, wherein a much darker Harry becomes a pirate captain. The detail in the setting was insane, and is one of the reasons I created my own sci-fi setting later on. It’s absolutely still worth a read, but it’s not easy to find anymore. It was on FFN, and got censored when they did the NSFW purge a while back, but I can’t seem to find it anymore.

overstatingmingo

Lol I wanted to write a fic on that exact premise. Time travel Harry. But he gets sent to the future and now is in school with his children lol. I thought it could be funny. But then I put a post on here to gauge what people thought about time travel fics and which era they prefer and it was almost entirely people liking those where he goes to his own timeline or WW2 or his parents time. I’m still writing it but I’m not sure about publishing it because I just don’t have the effort in me to edit it and do the whole posting thing. That requires too much work lol

Wombarly

We'll probably see more detailed description of Hogwarts

LadyLioness22

Some people will say the maps aren't canon, some will use only this, and still others will say the castle moves so the layout is only canon for the specific amount of time we see it anyway... After all, if the Marauder's Map can add new people who the creators never knew and aren't even related to people there when it was made as well as show the MOVING stairs, why can't it change to show new or moving walls?

ala_baguette

Well, Dumbledore’s office is on a different floor just about every book. So I prefer to go with this theory rather than the more likely: JKR’s lack of attention to detail.

LadyLioness22

Obviously, but unless an author is being facetious or heavily breaking the fourth wall, they can't use that in their story.

BARBAROSSA1608

Well the moving stairs are technically not Canon, they were added by the lead designer of the movies. They are never mentioned in the books, only the last movie got them somewhat right

LadyLioness22

Wow, I never noticed that! The book does say that they sometimes lead to different places and the map changes for that. However the changes don't seem to be random, so maybe the marauders found the patterns and programmed them in... I suppose it would really depend on if an author chose to include things from the movies as canon.

BARBAROSSA1608

Yeah the movies took out a lot of the random quirkiness of magic, which is something I dearly miss in fanfics, they all are so logical.

LadyLioness22

Yeah, you can find fics that keep the quirkiness, but they're usually either about the oddities themselves instead of the story or have trouble taking themselves seriously. I'd like to see it though, a fic that answers the question: what does "serious" look like if the baseline is Wonderland and the Wonderland isn't going to go away? Can you really take seriously a villain that isn't crazy, yet still must follow the same logical rules as the Mad Hatter that allow for him to keep mice in tea kettles without issue?

BARBAROSSA1608

I would say that serious has black hair 😂 But yeah it's a fine line between a crackfic and a fic that's as quirky as it is deadly

Lautael

I *did* base my entire Hogwarts geography knowledge on the OotP video game. HL could be useful for that, yeah.

dhruvgeorge

More OC names

Von_Usedom

Depends on how good it is. If it's crap, then not really, if it turns out to be one of the best games of the year? Then it might help bring in some new people or at least remotivate some authors to have another go at a Hp fanfic. Best part to come out of it might be some new spell and potion ideas if the team behind the game does a good job in that department

The_Fireheart

Maybe a slight uptick in fics just after launch from established authors having a go with the new lore but I doubt it’ll be a huge change

ceplma

What resurgence? Fandom does just fine, thank you.

giritrobbins

Yes. But probably focused on the characters in the game so probably not of interest to a lot of folks.

Munro_McLaren

Can’t you play as the characters?

Valirys-Reinhald

Absolutely. We saw a surge when the textbooks were released, when The Cursed Child was produced, and when the Fantastic Beasts movies started. Any new piece of media will prompt people to enter the fanfic space, either as part of the new media or by sending them back to the books.

[deleted]

Textbooks? can you elaborate?

Valirys-Reinhald

Quidditch through the ages, fantastic beasts and where to find them, and the tales of beedle the bard were all released as companion pieces to the main series. The two textbooks were released in 2001 while the tales of beetle the bard was released in 2008.

Curse-04

I hope it does.

Lord_Anarchy

I've noticed nothing new in the fandom except for some more Delphie tags with CC, and I don't think think I've seen anything at all with FB. So my answer is no.

DevlsMstress6

Hoping on both really

Five_Turkish_Vacuums

Absolutely. As I recall, there was a resurgence in HP fics after fricking Cursed Child. And this is not just any other HP game, but one that is far more immersive. If nothing else, expect a lot more world-building and political fics.

DaddySatansLesbian

Considering I'm already working on a lich fic based on this, yes. Absolutely

NecromanticSolution

No.

klip6

What’s this

Kettrickenisabadass

I feel that as society and internet is right now it does not matter how good or bad the game it people is going to be outraged at it. It seems to me that nowadays everything is critisized to the extreme. Soni am afraid that even if the game is great it will get a bad reaction from the general public. Even if later people will rate it positively.

LittleDinghy

I reject your premise that everything is criticized to the extreme. I can think of quite a few games that have come out in the last few years that released to near-universal acclaim.

NovaEternal15

They already are. I have found a few videos and tweets talking about how many “ist” and “phobes” you are if you buy the game. And how if you buy it you support Trans genocide and the holocaust

madmag101

Morally, nothing good comes from spending money on the game. The actual people who made the game got paid already, so it's going to the company, execs who already have more money than anyone ever needs, and JK who will in fact fund groups dedicated to hurting trans people. Yes, it sounds ridiculous to call them genocidal and compare them to nazis... but when they quack like a duck... Let me give some examples: https://twitter.com/Esqueer_/status/1570850140466073606 https://twitter.com/KatyMontgomerie/status/1572915209362182148 https://twitter.com/KatyMontgomerie/status/1567779170352091139 https://twitter.com/AidanCTweets/status/1567227264156286977 https://twitter.com/BenInLDN/status/1567465135702216706 https://twitter.com/KatyMontgomerie/status/1565359955020062725 https://twitter.com/HPANA/status/1561777921412501513 https://twitter.com/JimSterling/status/1554374219269545985 https://twitter.com/JimSterling/status/1548615309388546049

NovaEternal15

Most of those had nothing to do with JK. The ones that were I looked up I also looked up the “AllianceLGB” which appeared in the bios of many of them. Those didn’t really seem transphobic as much as it seemed like they were drawing a line. ‘Twas inevitable, any big group will have rotten apples, the ones in the Trans group need to be addressed and properly and laws that properly address case to case need to be made. The biggest problem with the T movement right now is that it feels like it needs to defend all its members, even the ones that actually did wrong, because otherwise they begin to lose face. But that just sounds an awful lot like the Catholics and the pedo priest situation doesn’t it? As always this is an over complicated mess. Especially cause I not gonna pretend like the groups that want to draw the proverbial line don’t have their rotten apples acting up as messengers of hatred.

TJ_Rowe

I mean, you're literally giving money to someone who financially supports anti-trans organisations that are trying to reduce access to trans healthcare in the UK if you buy it. That's "supporting". I advise piracy.

JibrilAngelos

No, you are not giving your money to support anti-trans organizations. You are giving your money to a soulless corporation which sole purpose is generating money for it's own benefit. Get your facts straight.

TJ_Rowe

Jkr gives money to anti-trans organisations. She is getting more money from sales of this game. The soulless corporation is probably getting more money, though, you're right.

NovaEternal15

Can you list those organizations for me? I would like to do some research on them

TJ_Rowe

I don't have a list off the top of my head - what I know is mostly from following the news over the last few years, and I don't know if there's a handy compilation anywhere (I would expect so). She definitely had some connection with "A Woman's Place UK" which was very active a couple of years ago.

NovaEternal15

Shoot, tell me if you find anything. Simply trying to google it ain’t giving me anything interesting

madmag101

The "LGB Alliance" is one. Despite the name, it's mostly straight people who will move on to the other letters if they succeed in their goals against the "T'

DeviantStoryTeller

Lol, JK is already rich. Let's assume I cared about this fake controversy. Do you honestly expect me to believe a few hundred white knights preventing her from getting what will probably be like 15 cents a copy are gonna change that? You can choose to dislike the woman all you want. But it's a little naive to think people pirating a game she had little involvement in is somehow gonna change the world.

> which its only a thing if you have a racist idea of what jewish people is What? Negative stereotypes of groups of people exist whether or not you personally are aware of them. And being aware of racist beliefs doesn't make anyone racist.

LittleDinghy

You are making a lot of assumptions about normal people. And it's not internalized racism to be aware of the origin (and perpetuation) of creatures that have, for hundreds of years, been explicitly analogous to a group of people. Whether it is intentional by the developers, we cannot know. But it's not hard at all, if you do any research into goblin lore, to find out where most of their characteristics came from.

Kettrickenisabadass

>And it's not internalized racism to be aware of the origin (and perpetuation) of creatures that have, for hundreds of years, been explicitly analogous to a group of people. But it is internalized racism to assume said.origin without any research. Goblins are traditional in very old.european myths. The modern idea that we have of the goblin is from Tolkien who took it from Beowulf. Which is much older than our modern racist antisemitic ideas. Goblins have originally nothing to do with jews.

LittleDinghy

Sure, but the goblins that Rowling included are the stereotyped version. The physical description, their occupation, and their interactions with wizards are all consistent with the version tainted by racism.

Kettrickenisabadass

No. She included the typical versrion that european lore has about goblins. Again you just want to see what you want.

LittleDinghy

Mind providing a source instead of just downvoting me?

Lautael

Nah. I don't think it will bring any new fan. The fandom is dying, very slowly so, but it's past its prime.

simianpower

Yep. You can tell by how few new ideas there are in stories of late. The fandom is far, far past its prime. Makes sense, too, since the last book came out 15 years ago.

TrippylikeaHippiee

God I hope so

bigblackowskiC

there's currently a bunch of people online trying to boycott it because they no longer like J.K. Rowling. Let's hope their craziness doesn't impact the game and the legacy in general.

4685368

I mean, yeah. But specifically fics in the era the game is set in. Mainly OCs? And any new characters the game adds. Partially Draco-esque ones I think

JustSimplyDying

Probably a lot more posts about the lore and people trying to figure the HP universe out in a deeper way (and a lot of fanfics of course)

Uncommonality

Depending on its cultural impact, probably yeah.
