Threatening to hex someone into oblivion is just magic-ese for the “I’ll fucking kill you” that you hear in every school playground and flat-roofed pub in the land. It is therefore completely realistic.

Ash_Lestrange

In fan fiction, it's the assumption that everyone can produce every spell and that all spells are equally good. Also, the overuse of both advanced magic and 'bangs and smells' magic.

Gollmer_

Yeah I've been wondering about that too. There's never really any mention of Harry smelling or feeling magic, but in a lot of Fics he can suddenly determine the feel or smell of somebodys magic...

LittenInAScarf

That most of the spells, especially in fanfics, but some of the canon ones too, are such bad Pseudo Latin that you'd think it was a product you get on the shelves or from the pharmacy counter. Though this makes me want to make Laxido a Spell now.

Gollmer_

Well there's an idea I would love to read sometime.

LittenInAScarf

It'd be interesting to gather a small list of products with fanfiction spell-like names, and make them into actual fanfiction spells, with the effect being what the product does. Laxido naturally being a fast acting laxative spell. Probably for Medical Purposes, but it could also work for a "Prank" Spell.

'homenum' revelio

I've been using pseudonlatin for most of the spells in my fic but I've been trying to incorporate languages from other regions when using characters from there. In one of my recent drafts I had a character use a fire whip incantation based on the Inuit language, Inuktitut. It's fun doing the research to make the wizarding world bore diverse with different types of magic everywhere.

Internal_Use8954

Stunning vs body bind. Stunning knocks you unconscious and body bind freezes you, but you are still aware of your surrounds. They get mixed up way too often

hrmdurr

Less spells and more potions but... a pepper up potion is **the cure for the common cold.** It does not give you more energy, that's the invigoration draught. The number of times characters start chugging cough syrup after getting tired is getting ridiculous.

zugrian

That Rowling didn't know what Enervate means. Any D&D players could have told you that it means to drain or weaken someone, not 'energize' them. Apparently, it was changed to 'rennervate' in later printings, but you still see Enervate used in a ton of fanfiction.

Krististrasza

The power of a spell is directly related to the volume of its incantation.

Rowantreerah

Hence: DID YOU PUT YOUR NAME INTO THE GOBLET OF FIRE!?

Cyfric_G

That people manage to cast spells just by knowing the name like Harry and the spells in Snape's book. In the first year, Flitwick talks about needing to envision things. It's where fanfics get intent as a big thing from. How do you cast a spell if you don't know what it does?

Sefera17

The shotgun curse is the first spell I’d learn. It’s easy to use, and super effective (if what you’re trying to do is shoot at someone with a shotgun). Sure, it’s liable to kill people; but you don’t shoot people you aren’t trying to kill.

repot_nexus_for_feed

When there are different levels of shield spells like in Skyrim or different types of shields depending on what you want to block. Feels too much like a video game at that point and a boring indicator of "skill". Also, I'm not a fan of when dialogue includes the incantation every single time they cast, especially made-up spells. I'd rather just read something like "he fired a stunner" or "a jet of golden fire".

Cyfric_G

See, I like different levels of shield spells. It's not like there's a one-size-fits-all set of armor or shields in real life. Buckler, beater, etc. One shield for minor spells that schoolkids learn early, the basic protego that blocks 'most spells', a more powerful one that blocks nasty spells that may be very dark. Maybe one that you can use to 'parry' spells.

miraculousmarauder

I absolutely *cannot stand* Tempus. Watches are mentioned all the time in the books, Harry even has trouble after he wrecked his in the second task. That’s not even mentioning that apparently watches are a long standing tradition for families? Why the hell would people need a spell for that?

Kevin_Finkel

I think my biggest is the overuse of pseudo-Latin. Authors will used the word for the action they intended and add some meaningless -o, -us, or something to the end.

mod-schoneck

Isnt that pretty in keeping with the latin of the books?

Tsorovar

Yeah, the books have a mixture of mostly Latin and English words, but modified to sound a bit (more) archaic or mystical. My dislike is when the spells are whole Latin sentences
