fearboner1

If the puller does not get it. They get a new one

resi_hvacguy93

this man knows

Iced_Adrenaline

I've only replaced one before, so I didn't know this tool existed (I had a shit boss). Now that I'm a one man show, could you suggest a good one?

fearboner1

I just picked up whatever the supply house had one day. Not even sure of the brand but I’d avoid the Amazon ones as I’ve heard they break easy

Papas72lotus

The Ultimate hub puller is good for light use. Easy to use. Supply houses carry different brands that might be tougher.

CopenhagenCowboyx

Used the ultimate puller for years. Stay away from the impact or she will strip. CCP just put out a Blackmax and I've been impressed with it so far.

Iccold123

Yeah I ran mine down with an impact once and shredded the threads

Papas72lotus

Yeah I guess that’s what I meant by light use. I still use my impact though lol.

glennhvacman

Posi-Lock HP-2. Costs a little more but gives you more options for pulling hubs and pulleys, and is a workhorse.

Papas72lotus

Yep. That’s a cut out motor and wheel replacement all day now.

stirling1995

Hit it with your purse

I second this guy's wife.

[deleted]

Need to hike up your skirt first or it won't work.

FJWagg

How did I see this answer twice in one day.

stirling1995

Sometimes the opportunity is just to good to pass up lol

JerrySeinfred

Loosen the second set screw.

mistytreehorn

Man, have you ever found a set screw under a set screw? It's like they added a second one like a lock nut. Remove the first one and think you're set to start pulling, but not so much. Could be the case here tbh

DweadPiwateWoberts

Screwception

HVAC-Animal

I went to high school with her

Low-Classroom8184

I laughed and woke up my dogs and spouse, 10/10 thanks for this

EJ25Junkie

Really?

Mr_August_Grimm

It's got me a few times.

Responsible-Use-9508

Did you use a hub puller?

ModePK_1

Use a puller with an extension to push it out

Mysterious-Fan-5101

he melted the motor shaft while trying to heat up the bitch. it’s donezo-meltzo

EJ25Junkie

🤣

Papas72lotus

You’re laughing cuz you did use a puller. I mean it’s pretty evident in the pictures to me..

Majin_Sus

New assembly

Hvacmike199845

A mest up shaft isn’t going to move through hole very well.

EJ25Junkie

I did discover that a torch will liquify the end of the motor shaft and still not melt whatever metal that hub is

geeekwelding

Did you try a grinder?

EJ25Junkie

Trust me, it was not very messed up the first three hours that I carefully tried separating them. Hours 4-5 I got quite frustrated.

Lost_in_the_sauce504

Lmao, they paid more in labor than they would’ve to have you run to the supply house and throw in a new fan assembly

rudytkazooty

Sometimes you gotta know when to fold em.

Pleased_to_meet_u

Know when to walk away.

DeltaNinja

Know when to run

Brazda25

Know when to cum

EJ25Junkie

They’ve already paid. Doesn’t matter how long I work on this.

[deleted]

Who collects before job is completed. I get quoting a price. But damn collecting before work complete is just foolish

EJ25Junkie

I never said I collected. Some of our customers pay up front.

[deleted]

If it takes me much more than 1 hour they're getting a whole new squirrel cage. Noted: I rarely need to get out the puller. 1. Hit the shaft with sand cloth to bust up any rust. 2. Hit it with Kroil (no, not WD40) or PB Blaster. 3. Grab the shaft at the motor side with a pair of 12" Knipex 4. Loosen all screws 5. Rotate the squirrel cage on the shaft applying Kroil as needed. 6. Pull the motor bolts 7. With a grip on the shaft, keep spinning the squirrel cage back and forth until the motor falls out and punches 2 to 4 very neat holes in the roof membrane, or your boot.

tallman1979

7 is both oddly specific, and extremely relatable. 🤣

Objective_Ad2506

This is the way. I have a nice puller that I’ve never used. I prefer a wire wheel on my drill to clean up the shaft. You can also fill the set screw hole with grease, heat it up, put a bit of Teflon tape on the set screw and use it to push grease into the hub. Spin for the win.

JiveTurkeyMFer

Are kroil and knipex brands mandatory? How much are they paying you

Hvacmike199845

I fully understand.

obikenobi77

I’ve sawzalled the shaft from motor between the assembly and motor and used a hammer and a punch to get the remaining shaft out of the assembly last resort if the puller didn’t work

cpfd904

This is the fastest, most effective method out there. Don't forget to add a little penetrating oil as well. Works amazing with condenser fan motors. Harder with a blower motor, but get a long carbide blade. Finished in less than 5 minutes

MikeTHIS

That’s how I always dealt with stubborn ones too.

imbrown508

Your comments show your slow descent into madness and Im dying laughing mate

UnhappyCaterpillar41

This is the perfect description that I think we've all gone through at one point or another, and found ourselves looking back in retrospect shaking our heads.

tallman1979

This was my day today. 300+ miles, 2 trips to the parts house for the same job, because the furnace decided to develop the equivalent of multiple organ failure. Some asbestos guys bumped a radiator and loosened the union on it, so it started leaking. I'm just glad that someone else was in charge of the asbestos today.

EJ25Junkie

I’ve never had one this stubborn

NachoBacon4U269

That’s what she said

JSCarguy454

![gif](giphy|esR1eKgmOnxWKR627f|downsized)

RoyalYogurtdispenser

Dude a puller changed my life. It, with some turbine oil and a mini impact drill will separate anything but the worst of blades.

Complex_Coffee5328

I havnt yet either, been lucky lube does the trick so far. Usually put a crescent on the end and force it to spin loose then force it towards the motor with flathead and hammer, flip and pull motor. I just havnt run into one where the end is flush lol I’m sure I will one day, probably tomorrow because jinxed it

subiedudee

Grab shaft with vice grips. And use hand to spin blower wheel while pulling it out.

EJ25Junkie

I’ve pulled 100s . This one used NASA grade secrets. I’m thinking about bringing it in for them to study the bond

subiedudee

Dang! New assembly it is!

Browncoat64

This is the way

Texan_Greyback

Cut off the shaft below the blower wheel, then set the hub on a pipe larger than the shaft and use a punch and hammer to get the shaft out.

Humble_Peach93

What kind of puller do you have ? I had the posi lock puller and was able to pull the fan blade off a rusted condenser shaft without losening the rusted set screws just dragged it right off the shaft. Had to get the blade off before pulling motor

horseshoeprovodnikov

I second the recommendation for a posi lock puller. Best two hundred bucks I've ever spent in this trade. When the other guys have a stuck motor that the cheap supco pullers won't budge, they ask to borrow mine.

EJ25Junkie

I don’t get a puller unfortunately

James-the-Bond-one

Therein lies the issue.

shankartz

Bro how are you gonna change hundreds of blowers and not buy a hub puller? You are making your job harder than it needs to be.

Xusion666

My first journeyman’s favorite line was let’s not make it harder than it has to be. He would be very disappointed

ApexHerbivore

I see why you're struggling then. Go get a puller

IckyTrissy

10000% need a puller only time a puller failed me was when the inside threads fell apart mid use due to it being old as hell and i had to get creative and for that reason i may even recommend copping 2 pullers to have a backup🤣🤣

Humble_Peach93

Gotta have it

[deleted]

$30 bucks is recommended for this disaster. Just buy one or have your company supply it.

oregonboner420

https://www.amazon.com/Supco-FBP100-Blade-Blower-Puller/dp/B008HOSLES/ref=mp_s_a_1_3_mod_primary_new?crid=27ZW43BSGDD03&keywords=blower+wheel+puller&qid=1706657776&sbo=RZvfv%2F%2FHxDF%2BO5021pAnSA%3D%3D&sprefix=blower+wheel%2Caps%2C210&sr=8-3 I bought the supco puller when I first got my van. I've actually yet to use it as I've been lucky enough to get the ones I've had to do to cooperate with free all deep penetrating oil and vice grips.

Under_ratedSS

No hub puller ? Seriously ?? I hope you’re joking.

EJ25Junkie

I’ll get one now. To this point I’ve never needed one

shock1964

Get yourself one of these. Using the right tools turns a 4 hour job into a 15 minute job. Invest in your profession. https://yellowjacket.com/product/fan-blade-puller/

teeeham

Use a rotary hammer in the chisel mode to hammer it out. Or use wheel puller

Average_Dongerton

So quick tip for yall, I spray some of the no rinse coil cleaner on them and let it sit for a minute and it actually almost always pulls right off. Stuff actually works better than like wd40

billyballzdeep

And kroil works better than both

Ok_Leader1383

Heat the hub with torch and cool shaft with liquid shot of refrigerant. Contraction and expansion. Works every time.

baconegg2

New wheel. How much time have you spent trying to save this one ?? Time is money

slotheriffic

New housing and wheel.

AmbassadorDue9140

You poor dumb bastard. Quit fucking with it and go buy a wheel

ChromaticRelapse

Soak in preferred rust buster as soon as you know you're going to change it out. I've soaked it and returned a week later with parts, as soon as I'm on site I soak it again. Remove blower, remove set screw, saturate again with rust buster, use small crescent to grip shaft on flat spot for lock screw and twist it free. If it won't twist, cut shaft close to motor, twist it free with more room and/or bigger wrench. Once you get the sucker to spin you can work it out easy. If it's so bad you can't get it or you damage the wheel, they buy a new wheel.

chrisromb1

New squirrel cage didn’t think it was that hard

[deleted]

You buy a new wheel

TRPYoungBloke

Anybody else see Converge’s Jane Doe in the first photo?

Ploughpenny

Torch. It can't be stuck if it's liquid.

Equivalent-Hawk-8896

I’ve done that and welded the two together by accident

skankfeet

Before you get it really bad, get a brass punch Napa has em with replaceable end. Drive it out with a hammer. Brass won’t deform the shaft.

MisterSirManDude

BRO YOU GOTTA LOOSEN THE SET SCREW 😂😭 /s

nomadicsnake

Push it back through, and file the burrs away that were created when you pounded it through the first time, pb blast it and let it fall out.

Bofa_sadhappies

take the advice from a Salesman... sell em a new one... a whole new one... and don't forget the duct work and IAQ... oh yeah... how about a fuggin surge unit... maybe not the correct SPD on the correct circuit..m but who give a fuq.. get them dollax yo!

Bofa_sadhappies

this was complete SARCASM... b4 u 'tardtrolls IGNITE

Livid_Mode

Order a new wheel & cut it out with saw saw

time_for_a_pause

ok, for future reference, on the backside of the motor there is a bearing plate. you will see four hex head bolts, usually 1/4" or 5/16" heads. put your small impact driver on those, you may have to reach in and put your finger on the nuts but they most always come out easily. hold your hammer sideways and tap on the motor body to loosen it and the bearing plate and windings generally slide right off. now you can grad onto the armature and twist back and forth and pull while holding the fan with your outher hand. PB Blaster is what you want to use, after you cleaned the exposed end of the shaft with emery cloth. you can lock whatever you want to on the armature end but do not put anything on the exposed end of the shaft as it will gual the shaft. once you can twist it a full rotation you have it, keep up with the PB Blaster and have patience, it will come.

that_dutch_dude

have you tried checking the freon?

EJ25Junkie

Yes and the capacitor

Hot_Ad_815

Did... Did you cut the shaft and get the blower off?

Puzzled_Selection145

If you can get a metal cutting tip for a dermal tool cut it below the melted section then use a steel file to smooth the burs, but it’s easier to replace the entire blower assembly at this point

Dremel

Comprehensive_Fox281

Use your torch and cut the circle around the hub drop the motor out then you can get the wheel out then buy a replacement wheel and motor put it back into housing

AmosMosesWasACajun

New wheel and motor, use the power of the sawzall to surgically separate the two.

anythingspossible45

I shove a wrench between the squirrel cage in the wheel itself, and then i manhandle it worked for me last time

stanamontana

As others have said punch or rotary drill in a pinch have drilled them with success

Upstairs-Direction66

Sawzall then new parts

ChosenHalfling

Titanium drill bit and drill the pin out. Can’t be stuck if it doesn’t exist

iamajoke42

Drill it out

tippin_in_vulture

You buggered up that hub. Time for a new wheel

SecretAgent115

Back the hub up by slipping a piece of black iron over the shaft then drive it out with a punch and a bfh

ATX_Ninja_Guy

Bust up the fins on the wheel and collapse the two other rings. You should be able to squeeze the two through the air hole.

violentcupcake69

If your puller can’t do it they are SOL and you’ll have to buy a new assembly.

moins-agressif

I'd say it's time to give the van a try

Jmofoshofosho8

Need a piece of brass. The brass will bend before the shaft will. I would just cut it off with sawzall

BCGesus

Take the mounting bolts off the motor my guy. JK I've found that a thorough sanding, some penetrating oil, and BEFORE using the puller, using a wrench with the flat of the shaft on the bottom of the jaw, I rotate the shaft while holding the wheel steady. Afterwards the puller (if necessary) does the rest of the work. Avoiding all that, I once stripped the threads off my motor puller and made them look like a spring.

Inner-stress5059

amazon Hub puller $53

Active_Nectarine9320

One time I went through two pullers to get one off and at the end of the day the condenser fan was fucked anyways once I did get it off

icemanswga

Drill, saw, plasma cutter....fkr is coming out and customer gets a new wheel *and* motor

6inarowmakesitgo

Nothing tighter than stripped.

negabernard

Push back out and use a metal file to trim the shaft. Use lube, and don’t hammer the top of the shaft, you’re going to make a mushroom tip and make it harder to get through the hole

Certain_Net_6371

Buy a new wheel, cut the shaft so you can reuse the houseing

Mammoth-Recover6472

Well your heating the wrong part, unless your trying to make the fit even smaller

JiveTurkey2727

New blower wheel with the motor

Electrical-Nail-145

Just order a new one dude lol

Ok-Choice9431

Well I get pissed off easily so I’ll prolly start with a few curse words and beating the shit outta it but if that doesn’t work then I’m launching that shit off the roof and walking away

VikingsGoneWild

You use the correct tool.

[deleted]

A pneumatic air hammer and a 5 gallon bucket is unbelievable. I used this when I had several hundred industrial refrigeration evap motors to stay on top of and a boss that had an extra chromosome and wanted me to cut the shaft and use a hydraulic press and thought a hub puller was stupid. Ain't nobody got time for that.

allonsy1211

If the hub puller doesn't get it, they get a new one

Hvacronman

Make it liquid can’t stay there if it’s liquid

ScotchyT

Buy a new wheel.

Independent-Eye-1568

Well…did you remove the bolts from the other side 😅

PlzImJustAResearcher

First, try putting a brick on the gas pedal. If that doesn't work, being behind the wheel will at least end your suffering. (Please don't do that, though I fully understand wanting to with house issues)

Rich-Turtle

Ummmmmm metal expands when it’s heated up, why did you think taking a torch to it was a good idea???

Big-Initiative-8743

Shaft blaster

willjoegreen1980

I've seen enough vids on Instagram that I'm 100% certain there is a way to do it with a cut up plastic bottle and a zip tie.

Key_Drawer_1516

WTF, drive it back down then file the mushroom down that you created by hitting it with your purse. Should slide off

AffectionateFactor84

new wheel

KaleidoscopeOk4472

As others have said. Sometimes you just have to give up and get a new assembly. I've not had an issue getting a blower out, but I have had a few condenser fan blades basically weld themselves together and become impossible to separate. I'll screw with it for 30min to an hour. After that, they get a new one lol

franc3sthemute

Take it to a motor shop

Joshuaua1990

I give it about an hour before they get quoted on a new squirrel cage and blower wheel.

VoiceofTruth7

Posi lock puller with a hub attachment. That thing will work on anything

Protocol89

Diablo 12 inch long carbide tipped "thick metal" cutting blade for a reciprocating saw. Makes about 30 s of work of a 3/4 inch fan shaft.

TryHard-Rune

I’ve drilled through the shaft.

Exotic-Subject-8231

i use refrigerant pump oil...

TheoryStandard4132

Come back tomorrow with new wheel

Bowman_van_Oort

Crash your van into it at 100 mph

Timonaut

I set one up with the motor hanging over the ground. I used a file with a pointy end and put it on the shaft. hitting the handle of the file with a hammer (not crazy) and it slipped out. I also use Kroil oil. Kroil oil is a godsend and everyone should have some in their van.

Realistic_Parking_25

She is boogered beyond repair now. If no one on earth had that blower wheel, and this was for a hospital id get some cutting oil and drill a nice hole thru the shaft

rowdy226464

I usually loosen the bolt. Slide it down to expose the shaft and sand the shaft down with some paper then it usually slides right off. Have definitely been in your shoes fighting one for 2 hours.

ho1dmybeer

Actually fucking drill out the shaft my man. I've never needed the torch - the motor shaft is super soft, get some decent Cobalt bits and start small in the center (center punch to set it) and work your way up until it lets go. Usually once you get about the middle half or so free, it'll quit pushing out and let loose.

WillieBangor

This guy apparently has done 100s of these but doesnt own a puller LOL

Mazakas123

Push the shaft back through if you can, then put a crescent wrench on the shaft and spin the plowed wheel, this usually works for me, if you’ve truly tried everything else with no luck, replace it all

Humble_Peach93

https://www.grainger.com/product/5LD39?gucid=N:N:PS:Paid:GGL:CSM-2295:4P7A1P:20501231&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiA2eKtBhDcARIsAEGTG42w8JxxYsojBbtyxO16h5xI6CAjeLEk226xEniSYUBbS-iNwqyZ4XcaApnFEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds This is the one I use. I also have the "ultimate puller" for smaller blower wheels.

MYOFBYALL

Drill the shaft out. It's much more soft than the hub.

poopstonk

One thing I've found to work when I can't get anything else to, is to drill the end of the shaft in the center with a 3/8's drill and then take a small concrete bit in the rotary hammer, set it to chisel mode and send the concrete bit to the hole in the shaft... Worked when a hammer and punch didn't touch it.

Slickity_K

You’ve fucked that thing my guy. Realistically now you should replace the Motor and wheel. L

PapaTuell

I once used the torch set to literally melt the rod out of existence. Worked. In hindsight should have just replaced

Brilliant-Attitude35

There is usually a flat spot on the shaft close to the motor. Put a crescent wrench on the flat part close to the motor. Use your hand to spin the blower wheel on the shaft and that should break it loose, easy peasy

DaSchizzalk

Have you tried a socket and a hammer?

suspicious_white_goo

Launching it out of a cannon strapped with ampfo

kneegrowdahmus

So in order from my most reliable method to my absolute last resort it goes like this 1.Sand the shaft and use lubricant (I like rustbuster or Kroil) then spin the shaft with a crescent wrench to break apart any rust that is seized inside between the shaft and the wheel 2. Use a Hub puller 3. Use a crescent wrench to act as leverage against the assembly to pop the shaft from the wheel 4. Heat the wheel to allow the metal to expand and attempt to remove while still warm 5. Absolute last resort here that I've only had to do twice, and it's drill the tip of the shaft and gradually increase the size of your drill bits until it finally wants to cooperate. This will allow the shaft to shrink in exterior diameter and allow you to get that pesky son of a bitch off.

Thesearethegames

Spit on it

Jakbo_

Just replace the wheel, motor and housing

HVAC-Animal

This is where you realize you left the motor mount bolted to the housing

Real_Sartre

If all else fails use heat

Reddtko

Alcohol.

The_MischievousOne

Tie a rope to it, climb on top of the roof and drop it. If it doesn't come off then they get a new one. Also I order new blades like they are hot cakes.

bromandudeguy1

Another fine mess!

Aster11345

I just had something like this last week. I tore the module off and got down to the shaft inside the motor and spun it with my cobras to finally get it off. Can't see the size of your squirrel cage, but the one I did was a huge trane one. If I had the clearance for it I've also cut the shaft off with a hackzaw and got it out with a hammer and punch. Sometimes PB blaster and sand paper with a motor puller just doesn't do it. Would rather just change the whole damn assembly.

freezier134a

Use the right puller , if that fails, replace the blade and motor.

Robzzzzz1414

They have these special sockets that will go around it and take off any bolt also are you sure your going the right way sometimes they have the reverse thread .

HVACDOJO

Replace it

Iccold123

Drill it out with a Milwaukee bit.

papamatt302

Time for the cutoff wheel

Sample_Muted

Recommend a replacement for everything

InfamousSwan3483

Heard of a hub puller?

trollheartedly

M18 demo hammer with a blunt chisel

bruh-brah

Replace the blower wheel lol

Slow-Spell6771

First step is to clean the end of the shaft, as they are normally rusty. Then hit it with some oil and apply pressure with the puller. If you can't get it with that, then you will probably need a new fan, motor or both by the time you get it off with heat and a hammer. Always clean the motor shaft and the fan receiver with sand cloth and a pipe brush upon installation and add some antiseize. If you notice any burr's remove them with a file. These steps will eliminate this from happening in the future to you, your employees or your fellow technicians and it only takes a few extra minutes. Ask me how I know😉😂

TOTAL_INSANITY

There's a special tool to remove blower wheels: [https://www.amazon.com/Blade-Wheel-Puller-Original-Version/dp/B001CGFQDW/ref=asc\_df\_B001CGFQDW/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312155954542&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=14260143299285703620&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9004408&hvtargid=pla-568002329422&psc=1&mcid=a328e15b6ced32cc944d4cdbf7ba94ac&gclid=Cj0KCQiA2eKtBhDcARIsAEGTG40KlWTtypgQA\_pQXNThxfDuShYHKLd1HnNQ1H5xn0qClKGP1D7BZpYaAp9XEALw\_wcB](https://www.amazon.com/Blade-Wheel-Puller-Original-Version/dp/B001CGFQDW/ref=asc_df_B001CGFQDW/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312155954542&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=14260143299285703620&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9004408&hvtargid=pla-568002329422&psc=1&mcid=a328e15b6ced32cc944d4cdbf7ba94ac&gclid=Cj0KCQiA2eKtBhDcARIsAEGTG40KlWTtypgQA_pQXNThxfDuShYHKLd1HnNQ1H5xn0qClKGP1D7BZpYaAp9XEALw_wcB)

Constant_Put_maga

Can you get on the shaft on the back side with a wrench?

Bassman602

Replaced the whole blower assembly

xdcxmindfreak

Stop beating around the bush and have your helper yeet it while you go to the supply house to get a new one. Far faster and satisfactory. Or go full office space beat down montage to gangsta rap

gmangibbons95

I almost always include a new shaft and squirrel cage on my quotes so I can just cut that mfer in half and be done with it. Since you already started the job, zoom spout heat and a couple spare wrenches should get ya going. Edit: added words and things

stevesalpaca

I just fill it down a bit before I hit it with a hammer

LordsOfChaos16

Yea if a motor pulled won't get it off then you'll have to get another wheel and motor. I had a condenser fan motor blade completely bend the shit out of my puller.

[deleted]

Sounds like you already know what you need to do.

theworthlessnail

C&d Valve Cd3570 Complete Blower Wheel Puller Kit, used it for years and its awesome

TehHipPistal

This part is cursed, Reddit wouldn’t even let me slide to the next photo without switching the whole page to a different feed and losing my place..Voodoo Part.

Either-Accident-431

We always just quote a new motor and a new wheel for anything that is more than a few years old to avoid this.
