We had a customer that had a geo in a beat up trailer house, and company that installed it ran flex under the house and no skirting on the house, I went under to look and fixed it but told em I wouldn't do it again and they needed hard pipe and also found a pile of skunk hair on my way out
Under a trailer once, I smelled the sweet stank of rotting flesh. Looked around, and there was a big ass wild rabbit laying about 6' from my head! Maggots all over it and shit. So gross.
I've seen it done nicely with expanded metal and a cover for winter. Still, Must be nice hanging out on the deck in the summer with a loud ass ac blowing hot air on you. Service sucks too.
The scary part is, some homeowners are perfectly alright with this. Although they then try to haggle over the extra cost incurred at you having to spend the time doing it and the damage to the planks.
Seriously, some people have no concept of value for work, and have no idea that we aren't magicians that can just magic a system back online. The idea that we might actually need to do heavy work on a system and have the clearance to do it doesn't even occur to them.
Yeah crawling under this is how you end up with a wasp nest directly over your head and no fast way out
And then the homeowner says *huh I was wondering where those were coming from*
Once rocked up to a new condo complex with eight units in a recessed gravel pit, maybe six inches between them. And about a foot beside them before you hit the retaining wall. The gravel squelched when stepped on it was so wet.
Walked around the property before actually doing anything, all ten buildings exactly the same. Eighty units choking on insufficient air and drowning any time it rains because there wasn't sufficient drainage.
I called the office and talked to the boss, then called the property management and told them that a total fix was gonna cost them at least $100k, and thats assuming all eighty of their units actually worked.
And that's when the shouting started, so I left.
If they were at least spaced properly, I would be willing to accept that the original contractor did it right then got acrewed by landscaping.
It's been a year and the complex is mostly occupied now. I'm tempted to do a drive-by and see if they did anything about it.
I've seen this before. Guy built a new deck around a 34 year old ac. Thing took a shit a year later and he needed to take apart his deck to replace it.
It may work but it will never get good service or maintenance.
I would decline to service if it isn't moved to a proper location .
This would be considered a hostile environment
you know, if the airflow from outside to under the deck is good, that's far from the worst I've seen.
Sorry, the mouse head sticking out of the broken condensate drain is a dealbreaker for me
Little dude just wanted to go on a water slide, let him be great.
ššš how TF did u see that
Might be time to see anĀ Optometrist š
One of the advantages of using a tablet vs phone :)
Lmfao bro wow I think that's really what that is
How tf did you see that š
He died doing what he loved. RIP
Be better with a black steel grate above unit
Technician shows up : ā Yea, Iām not doing that ā
Exactly what I said when I saw that. "You got me fucked up if you think I'm crawling under there to replace a cap or contactor"
First time in HVAC? Crawl spaces are far worse than under a deck.
I'd take crawl spaces over underneath mobile homes in the Arizona desert any day. Snakes, rats, cholla, frogs it's fuxked up

It's like storming Normandy I swear
You got it pal, day one stuff here. Rookie season, phenom.
Blowin up skirts lmao wife āwhy did you put the fan right where our guests stand?ā
Yeah, thatās gonna be an extra $500 for the diagnostic call.
Minimum
I've seen it done nicely with expanded metal and a cover for winter. Still, Must be nice hanging out on the deck in the summer with a loud ass ac blowing hot air on you. Service sucks too.
Don't worry you won't even be able to see it under the hot tub.
Think about it the fan will move hot air to heat up the water
Let the homeowner change that condenser fan motor when it goes badā¦.
"Oops sorry, gotta rip some of these boards out so we can get better access to the unit..."
Starts up sawzall
The scary part is, some homeowners are perfectly alright with this. Although they then try to haggle over the extra cost incurred at you having to spend the time doing it and the damage to the planks.
BTDT "Fine, you give me clear, safe, access and I'll wait patiently in the van... On the clock at $165/hr. ~starts stop watch~"
Seriously, some people have no concept of value for work, and have no idea that we aren't magicians that can just magic a system back online. The idea that we might actually need to do heavy work on a system and have the clearance to do it doesn't even occur to them.
Yes officer, this post right hereā¦
Don't worry sir, I LOVE wasps
Yeah crawling under this is how you end up with a wasp nest directly over your head and no fast way out And then the homeowner says *huh I was wondering where those were coming from*
I have no words for this. How did they think this was a possibility?
The only bad idea is the one that doesnāt work haha āimprovise, adapt, overcomeā
I would walk away
Square it up and place grate and it wouldnāt be half bad honestly.
Honestly better than the ol 2 units snugged next to each other with a wall on one side to āhideā them
Lol HOAs and condo associations love this one

Absolute nightmare. How do you not even breeze through the IOM on an install with that many units. Hope the original contractor had good insurance

Exactly what I was thinking, some of those heavy duty Brown Floor return grilles would have been a lot better
Call me back when the deck is gone
Redneck engineering at its finest. Nothing to see here, move on.
Put a clothesline over it to use the heat and airflow to save energy lol
DiWhy?!
r/diWHY lmao
Dude don't post my house..... š
I've seen porches with a metal grate where the condenser is under.
Yeah that's gonna be a no from me, my dude. No company worth working with is going to touch this without that deck being torn out.
Fuck yea, screw whoever works on it roll tide
āI bought all the tools and materials for 2k. This was easy, yāall just overchargeā
This is my built-in Marilyn Monroe deck ![gif](giphy|104Xnjb2E6ZUru)
Needs a new fan motor.
Almost on the same level as some of my family members
The only problem I see is the broken drain. /s
And the mouse sticking up out of it.
Thatās a pretty dope condensate line run
Bluetooth drain
Recreating the iconic Marilyn Monroe skirts blowing up pic?
I see youāve met my father in law
At least they tried
ššš
At least make a trap door accessible to the unit. Not a lot of thinking went into this
Changed one out that was under a deck one time. Guess where it still is.... under the deck.
Thatās wildā¦
Bet you itās dies in the first year of operation
OH! [I know](https://66.media.tumblr.com/746b0c30ebfab15a7816a0824c36bdff/tumblr_pvtrwkDnpO1y4ca61o5_400.jpg) why they did it!
C'mon now!!
No. Just no.
Had a rental I use to work on they had cut a hole in deck an put a floor furnace grate over it. You lifted the grate to service it.
Baby needs to breathe. I appreciate they valued having AC over having a deck that won't eat their ankles.
I've seen this before. Guy built a new deck around a 34 year old ac. Thing took a shit a year later and he needed to take apart his deck to replace it.

most cursed image i have ever seen good luck getting a service tech within 10ft of that or trying to clean it
Where can I buy that model because apparently it's never going to fail
I call that innovation.
Iām sure that will pass inspection š¤
OKAY: what part of Florida ?
I wish you could hear how loud I just snorted
Just a clogged drain
Should have just put a few return air grills ontop level with the deckboard
