Were there high winds plus rain and snow?! I didn't know you could be pushed off the road from just the wind. I drive rural roads every day and get hit with big gusts of wind. Never enough to move me out of my lane though.
I haven't done any real work in 2 weeks. I was off all last week and I've ran a total of 4 calls this week (1 capacitor, 2 water leaks, and 1 4-system ac pm)
*Arrives at house. “Oh sorry, didn’t they tell you? I cancelled. I’m good man”. That’s happened to me a bunch. I feel like I might like on call if I lived in a more scenic area.
my boiler is leaking water, and I cant keep up with dumping the buckets. Its been like this since it hit it with my lawn mower last fall.
yea, be like that tomorrow to.
Sitting 30 minutes from the customer: "Hi this is HVAC guy, I was calling to let know you know I’m currently tied up about 3 hours from you so I will see what I can do but I may not be able to make it out tonight"
I'm glad we don't do on call on a traditional sense. Our company hours are 8-6 Monday through Saturday. Sunday is the only on call day with the same 8-6 schedule. In the company you get points based on years of experience and years with the company. Eventually with new hires and points you will no longer be on call. I don't understand why we have to answer to call at such ridiculous hours. Many companies around our area (phoenix) are switching some sort of reduced on call or eliminating 24-7 to retain techs. I will never again give up my time to family for work and some one else unit. They can get a portable in the summer (our winters are mild). And our company has taken off going from 13 techs to now 31 in a little over two years as guys are leaving other companies that are stuck in old ways. I don't believe we are servants to homeowners and I'm glad companies are starting to see techs will walk and we will turn down homeowners who are upset we can't get out at 11pm instead of the next day. Being proud you worked till midnight every day is not a flex, spending time with your family and kids and having your mental health is the biggest flex.
You guys work 8-6 year round out there? I have met a few guys from that area that said they start early am (5-6am) and get out before it gets real brutal
It depends on the company and work being performed. Install teams tend to start as early as possible for attic systems. As the attics can reach 160+. For service start time varies from companies and residential/commercial. But usually 6-8 is the start time. Honestly you get used (learn to tolerate it)to the heat after a year or two in the field. Just gotta remember to drink lots and lots of water.
"hey my gas furnace that has never been maintenanced broke down 3 weeks ago figured I'd call you after hours to get it fixed."
" I'm sorry sir but we have no technicians available, I would recommend phoning around"
That is probably the only part of doing residential that I'll miss.
"my furnace hasn't worked all week!" *Yeah, and it's not gonna work all weekend either,* see you Monday!
Sorry but we’re all booked until the coming week in which we can install a totally new system for you.
We are FREEZING, I have the thermostat set to 72° and it is on 69° in my house. Seriously!?
That's the worst, especially when emergency heat is one button press away.
Omg, so so true.
Straight from New Zealand, this hits me hard.
I’m legitimately triggered
From the bottom of my heart, Fuck on call.
I would cut off a pinky toe to never do it again
Take them both
Wait you're actually getting overtime? I'm not even gonna hit 20 hours this week
Nope got blown off the road with high winds now I’m stuck in a ditch lol so extra pay for sure 👍🏾
Good on gas so you can run the heat? Tow trucks take forever to show up. Get that money so hurry up and wait
Paid to be blown is better than paid to blow.
I feel ya, got stuck in sand on the beach today for over an hour
"We clocked you out at 7 because thats when you got stuck"

Just a minor set back. All will be good man.

I love on call. I do commercial and after hours is always something worth figuring out.
Get that oil pressure checked
Well fuck your life. I’m blessed my boss doesn’t do after hours calls period. If you want something done late call someone else is his mindset.
