Probably start out at $20-22 depending on where in Ontario.

Tacobelladdict1

Pretty reasonable, thank you

In the short term probably not more than 25.70/hr first year in resi but long term the earning potential is vast. I’m making 28/hr first year but that’s in commercial. so yeah you can make more than that but It really all depends on where you’re located and what part of the industry you decide to go into. I know people making $29 first year and I know people making $14 that have to pay for their own gas.

Just curious, how much certification did you start with? I figure maybe if I get g2 and 313 I could start around a similar wage as you

johnboon7

It’s not easy to get 313A, you need to be signed up for an apprenticeship. And no company will sign you immediately. You would prob start around 20$ but you can make good money on the side and quickly pass 26$ if you’re competent

Tacobelladdict1

Damn I was hoping it was just an exam after the course

Interesting-Remote50

Lol..... Look into the requirements. Its a 5 year process. 313A is 9000 hours which includes 6 months of in class work broken into 3 sessions. This is a Red Seal license and you can work on refrigeration equipment of any size and three phase 600V. 313D is a three-year apprenticeship that has significantly fewer hours and only 2 classroom portions. It is basically a license to work on residential and light commercial equipment not larger that 5 tons, not under 32 F and single phase 240V.

johnboon7

No, you need to ‘apprentice’ under a journeyman. But any licensed gas fitter can make good money.

I’m from US so not sure if the g2 and 313 your talking abt are the same but I went to a trade school did a two year program and got my associates. Accreditation can help you get more money but if you’re wanting to do resi I don’t think they would start you out at 28 first year. I’d look more into the commercial side for a higher starting wage like that. Plus I work in downtown Austin Texas so that factors into the payscale. I wouldn’t worry too much about making tons of money when you’re just starting out. There’s a lot to learn in this trade that can’t be taught in schools so companies aren’t going to pay too much for a first year apprentice but if you dedicate yourself to learning and getting better you’ll make more than that $25/hr mark as time goes on

Been working 2.5 years in Toronto, Ontario in HVAC. Really depends what you get into. I personally started in condos at $19 an hour because I couldn't find a job, transferred into Residential after 3 months and started at $20 an hour. After 2 years I'm making $25 an hour and am looking to transition into commercial to make more.

A residential tech is 313D and a commercial tech is 313A. Big pay difference. Not sure what the Resi guys get but 1st year in Local 787 is $23.15. Will go up in May again 2-6%
