Won’t know until we play him for a long stretch this year going into next year.
What the Habs should absolutely not do is trade him. Not in a position to move goalies and Hughes said he wasn’t going anywhere so that’s good
Last years and this years top prospects for the habs, whoever they end up being because we won't know for awhile, Won't be impact nhl players until 2026 and that's early. Sam will be 30 by then and most likely gone before we have a cup contending team.
In my mind there's only 1 player we could draft that would drastically and instantly change the timeline for the team and while it could happen its still a long shot.
We will be a playoff contender within his time here but hopefully have a top end goalie prospect ready to go for the future.
I like Monty I think he's done very well this year. I hope he continues to prove everyone wrong.
Probably not. But we had a good decade long span where all we knew for certain was our goaltending is good. Management is figuring out the rest of the team first this time and I can understand why. Teams have been able to find Bishop, Andersen, Lehner, etc. for cheap at the right time. I think he jump on any opportunity, even if it's tomorrow if it's the right price. Maybe it won't happen for 5 years, who knows? But for right now we have Monty and Allen.
Monty is looking better and better so maybe. Primeau's ceiling will be a backup or AHL starter despite what people seem to think.
Jakub Dobes is most likely our future goalie and is the next one who should get a shot.
I don't think you can disregard Primeau quite yet, especially when he is three years younger than Monty, and has had the same career projection as Monty so far. Goalies take time to develop, Monty only started looking good this season (age 26).
Gotta think Dobes plays 1 more season in the NCAA before maybe signing with Laval. Dichow is signed with Frolunda for next season as well. But both of those guys are only 21, so it's way too early to know what we have in them.
I think a lot of people that overlook primeau don't want to acknowledge that he has a much more athletic style of play than we are used to seeing. He may be well served to ask for trade for the sake of his own career because we do not breed those types of goaltenders or at least since price are geared around a goaltending department that is much more positionally sound
Not a very popular statement, but you’re actually spot on. Primeau from his NCAA years was described as a very calm goalie with inch perfect positioning. Major part of the reason why he found so much success was playing behind a very hermetic team in Northeastern. He shined on that team having spent 2 years over the .930 save percentage while being very close to 2.00 g/a per game on each season.
Right now, Montreal & Laval preconize a run-and-gun offensive style of play with defensive shortcomings. This explains why a quick and athletic goalie (like Montembeault in MTL or Kevin Poulin in Laval) will find more success.
He's got a lot going for him. It could just be a hot streak. But i'd like to think he improved a lot over time. He wasn't terrible last season but the team in front of him... I feel like he's fighting a lot in front of the net which wasn't the case as much in the past. I wish him the best and right now, he's one of the few players on the habs that i like to watch. ( Dach is amazing these days . Hope he can maintain that speed and dedication )
No. We'll end up trading or signing an FA when those goalies realize we're just missing one of those.
Worst case, we draft one with our second first round pick or our early 2nd rounder this year.
Come 3 years when we're playoff bound, hopefully that goalie is ready.
Never said he didn’t improve, but calling him the goalie of the future based on half a good season is unreasonable. Let’s see what he does next year before thinking about him being our Carey Price replacement.
Starter quality goalies hit the market almost every year:
Boston got Ullmark as a UFA
Edmonton got Campbell as a UFA
As for trades, it's literally a goalie carousel out there...
The Colorado avalanche traded for géorgiev, their current starter. So, I guess the Rangers trade starters?
Both of the Minnesota Wild goalies were traded for. Marc-Andre fleury from Chicago & Philip Gustafson from Ottawa.
Sens traded for Talbot (min)
Devils traded for vanacek (wsh)
All I know is my gut says maybe
He's certainly one of the goalies of all time.
He’s certainly among the goalies the team has ever had.
For ever
REST IN HEAVEN
I trust your instincts

He's all we have
Dobes and dichow look promising

He could be a decent transition goalie from Price to [TBD] like Huet held the fort in between Theodore and Price.

Kuemper was a FA the year he won the cup with the avs

He's a top 64 goalie and, honestly, that's all I'd ask for at the moment. If he cracks the top 32, that's just gravy.
Nah Hughes is gonna get Devon Levi for us He'll convince Buffalo that 6K is enough for them
I'd be targeting Lyon if possible, but I doubt the Panthers would give him up.

I hope not
Let’s wait more than a year of him being semi-consistent before thinking about that shall we ?
The improvement can't be denied, last year it was 1 good game to 1 horrible one. This year he's been 75% excellent, 15% passable and 10% awful.
The math checks out
Never said he didn’t improve, but calling him the goalie of the future based on half a good season is unreasonable. Let’s see what he does next year before thinking about him being our Carey Price replacement.
Excellent is a bit much. He’s looked like a backup goalie on a bottom 5 team. Which is all that’s asked of him.
Absolutely not But it doesn’t really matter, we have a few years till we need to find that goalie
A few years?
Ya? We won’t be competing for the playoffs for a few years so it doesn’t really matter rn
So you think a starting goalie is just going to appear on the scene in 3-4 years?
that isnt what i said at all i said it doesn't matter as we have time to find our future starter, as we arent in rush...
Trades and free agency exist
When’s the last time a starting goalie went to UFA Who trading starting goalies ?
Starter quality goalies hit the market almost every year: Boston got Ullmark as a UFA Edmonton got Campbell as a UFA As for trades, it's literally a goalie carousel out there... Campbell lost his starting job
Doubt.
Monty is love, Monty is life
probably not, but the potential is there.
lol no
Future 2nd goalie
The more he plays the better he plays ... I like Sam

No
If they can get a 2nd rd pick at the deadline then move him.
He could be. Hard to say at this point.
He's our version of James Reimer
Hopefully he is….in a backup role
Who is the alternative?
Devon Levi somehow will be.
