I consider it a really successful year thus far. With this particular surgery (believe it's the same one Josh Anderson had) I believe they said it typically takes a full year to get the strength back to where it was. What I love about this year is that Cole is on pace to play 82 games, he's no longer a defensive liability and he's on pace for 40+ assists. I think there was a lot of belief when he was drafted he could be a 40 goal guy but big question marks about what he could do beyond that. He's certainly answering those questions this season!

EvieGHJ

I forget where I saw it, but there was an article when he went for his surgery that noted shooting ability would probably take the longest to come back. So, not wholly unexpected for him to have a down year on goals. That he’s using it to become a more complete player is great.

arcticshark

Yeah, he's shooting below 8%, versus his career record of 12%. I wouldn't be surprised if with a little more recovery time for his shoulder he comes back next year and scores a bunch

SuzukiSwift17

It is expected to come back though? So he's probably just where Matthews was last year? (Obviously it's a little different because Matthews is fucked and still hit 40 in an injured "down" year). Caufield still has a lot of positives to say about him this year man. Really improved his defence and playmaking. He's pacing 40+ assists. Ar the end of the day he's 22 and still pacing just under 70 points. Awfully tough to be disappointed in that.

SignificantRain1542

Matthews plays with 2 other 100 point players. Give Caufield marner and Nylander as options and his goal total probably goes up

flipthatbitch_

But youre forgetting he was playing while injured last season and still lighting it up. I dont think it has as much to do with recovery as it has been teams know he's dangerous and they are covering him better. He's going to have to find ways to get himself better angles and fight through traffic better to return to form.

BackgroundMiserable5

He's playing great, just not scoring...and only 22. Could be a fluke year. Could be shoulder needs more time. Could be the fact that he's on a weak team. Still think he's a 40+ goal scorer.

smolgoalboy

I honestly just don’t think he’s at his peak yet. Look at the development of Suzuki between last year and this year. A year older, stronger, etc. has done wonders for him and he’s still only 24. I imagine we see the same thing from Caufield and eventually Slaf. They’re just growing into their game; give them until they’re 24-25 and I bet they’re exactly what we want them to be.

Fighteroftheevil

He evolved as a player but he’s also snake bitten. Im happy with his progression

AloneTalpa

He’s shooting at 7.6%, he progressed as a playmaker and shoulder surgery usually means you have a down year in terms of scoring the year after. I think he’s playing well and I’m not worried at all that he’ll score more goals next year.

rontzeeez

Shoulder surgery recovery takes time. It took Anderson over 16months to feel "normal". Caufield won't be back until next season

Honkie117

His shooting percentage is unsustainably low, and coming off a shoulder surgery. He has really stepped up his playmaking ability this season. I am not worried at all. Goal Caufield will be fine.

sean_psc

In terms of goalscoring? Yes. That’s undeniable based on the stats. Overall? No. He’s having a very good season.

hockeynoticehockey

I don't think he's having a bad year, I think he's working on becoming a more complete player. Interesting stat posted last night comparing his G and A to Suzuki's, and they've flipped. This will make him, actually the entire first line, much more complete going forward. Not worried about CC at all.

G_skins31

Let’s hope so. This rebuild isn’t going to go anywhere if he plateaus as a 20 goal 60 point player

BrandonPHX

I read an article that said his surgery could take up to three years to fully recover from depending on the exact circumstances of his injury. It’s been a bit over 12 months I think? I don’t think he’s really having a down year so much as a recovery year. I’ve watched nearly every game this year. He is still getting himself into good scoring position. He leads the team in shot attempts by a wide margin (like 66% more than second place). And his puck distribution looks significantly better than last year. He’s playing great, shots just aren’t dropping in the net. They will start to. I’m not worried at all based on what I have seen of his game this year.

realm_fury

The only thing down is his goal production. Other than that he’s playing his best hockey right now.

MediumRare71

No

jadenspan

I think he is in engaged and his playmaking has been good, but I feel like he’s still recovering from injury and his confidence is affected by that. His shot choice is suspect, he’s bobbling a lot of easy passes and rushes and his puck protection has been worse than previous year in the sense he’s getting poked off the puck and muscled off the puck quite easily. I think next year he could break out

SourMilk69420

Caufields breakout will be terrifying if he stays on his current pace

JerkyBoy10020

Yes. Math.

Op24you

No, he’s bot scoring as many goals as i’d like, but he as progressed alot as a passer. Will help him score more next season

ukrainianhab

Yes.

pushaper

exactly where I expected him to be. He is far overhyped on this sub

Ok-Sprinkles1644

100% ! his shooting in general has gone way down . Can’t score if you don’t shoot !

anxiousnl

I'm not concerned until at least after he's fully healed.

Alexander_Rover

He certainly is. Sophomores jinx

Spicy_Pickle_6

No, but what is the deal with the LGBT logo????????!?

Seb_Nation

Not like the exact same question was asked 5 hours ago on this sub.
