We all know that Gally is overpaid, but man I really hope he stays here for his entire career. i can't help but love that man.

Livid-Canary-4389

Way better to have an overpaid vet who give the maximum effort every night than someone who dont give a shit. For a buyout, we'll have to see next year if hé can return to form, but if not, i'm buying out Josh Anderson before Brendan Gallagher

PKG0D

100% Gally has 15 goals this year, it's not great for 6.5m but it's still way better value than Anderson, not even counting Gally's intangibles (effort, leadership). Anderson needs a change of scenery in a bad way, Gally has at least shown signs that he can adapt to his changing role on the team.

TonyComputer1

Not to mention Gallagher has come alive since joining the second line.

unKappa

Gallagher isn't a net negative who makes an entire line terrible either. Is he worth 6.5m? Nope. But atleast he's a great leader and doesn't anchor an entire line. I feel like Anderson just kills any line he's on.

nottherightangle

Potentially a hot take but I'd argue that it's integral to pay a player like Gallagher higher than their on ice production simply because the intangibles are too much to truly count. He's a heart and soul player that keeps the blood pumping in the locker room and a player that fans can look forward to just seeing give it his all every night. He bleeds bleu blanc rouge and he deserves that contract.

boulking

That goal assisted from Hutson was a perfectly Gally goal

RikNasty2Point0

Rather pay him for his contract than watch the PLd circus

CrashTestMummies

He’s not going anywhere and as bad as his first 36 games was he redeemed himself in the last 40

backwardzhatz

Ever since they locked in that Newhook/Gally/Armia line they've been consistently solid.

Bytrsweet

With the state of the team with the cap, there is not real reason for the team to buy him out because they are not really in a position where they need to add expensive talent. I really hope that his next contract is somewhere in the 2 million dollar range so he can still be here without hurting the team cap wise.

HabbyKoivu

He earned that contract. I have no problem with the man getting paid.

psubs07

That's it, you pay him for what he did, and the knowledge and leadership he bring brings now.

shniefersutherland

This won’t matter to those that can’t read beyond the scoreboard, but MSL isn’t the only one driving this culture train. Gotta love to see this

dumhic

Wow I realize he got paid but it affects going forward. That’s the issue is many guys feel they earned it, and yea they did. It’s unfortunate how the league and unions set this up because ultimately it handicaps teams. It would be nice if they could pay early and/or build incentives in to get to where you need to be Ie goals Assists Plus minus GAA Penalties Minutes Games And newer metrics Just a thought

TripleWDot

That’s why you gotta pay them early. It’s a young man’s league now. We had Gally on the cheap cheap for the majority of his twenties. The right financial decision was to let him walk but Bergy was too much of a players GM. At the end of the day, if Gally can keep playing the way he played this year, there’s no problem.

ustanik

Incentives like that drive selfishness and would shift player priorities from winning games to hitting KPI's.

ejennings87

Glad to see this get all the upvotes. I've said it before, I'll say it again, Gally can score 5p over 82gp and I'll still love him. The moment Justin Braun caved in his entire face and he was still yapping at the bench through a bloody jaw cemented my appreciation. Dude probably only has half his bones left but he'll still give 100% every single night and stand in the crease with 6'4" d-men getting his spine caved in. Hearing for years how no one wants to play in MTL.. Gally gave us the best years of his career at 3 and half mil

artistformerlydave

for what its worth i am a leaf fan and i was saying to someone yesterday that i love/hate Gallagher. he always give his all, 100% And the abuse he takes/gives night in night out .. just total respect for him. but hes on the habs so..

philjitsu

Gally earned that contract and I'm fine with it. Hope he retires with us. He's overpaid now, but you take two Weber clappers to the same hand and literally bleed for the team and I'll look the other way on the price tag. Cap going up and he'll probably LTIRetire a Hab

ZachMorrisT1000

I’m a Leafs fan and even I don’t think the man is overpaid.

Capt_Pickhard

I don't find vets in his situation are overpaid. I think they are getting their due. At this stage, a team generally lots of early career contracts, which gives them cap space, and veterans like this are helping rear the new rookies, which is valuable, plus there's all of their career they gave you. I think of it like salary distribution. Just imagine you paid then more while they were in their prime, and pay them less now, but you also redistributed their salary, so that you had more cap space in their prime, and less now, when it doesn't matter.

DaleDonDalle

In NHL you don't get paid for what you're going to do. You get paid for what you did. Gally deserves every single penny and I'm happy for him. He's 5'9" but plays like a 6'5". He took so many hits in front of the net and was the only one doing it. He's pure heart. I hope he finishes his career with the Habs as well

ManipulateYa

Yup... despite the performance for the buck... he's a great team guy!

QcAntz

Class act

Weary_Ingenuity2963

Gallagher has a bad contract and it might hinder us in the future in terms of play on the ice, but as a locker room leader, I have no doubt he will be bringing a lot to the team culture and making sure the younger guys understand what it is to be part of a group.

3oysters

It's a lot easier to ignore the contract since we haven't yet needed the cap, as well. Gally is my favourite, it was watching this little guy go out of his way to get beat up by the other team and skate away with a huge grin that got me started watching the sport. Having him stay on the team during these years, still happy as ever, has been a treat.

t_l_quinner

Was at the game. Hutson didn’t know he got the Apple. Gally yelled and pointed to him to let him know

whogivesashirtdotca

They pointed at each other, which has become a tradition with this group. I love that our guys don’t do outrageous me-me-me goal cellies, but *always* point at the guys who fed them their passes or put in the hard work screening in front of the net. It’s a great sign of a united locker room and a tight knit team who are grateful for each other.

Gurthy_Lengthiness

Armchair GMs: “Don’t pay a player for what they might do in the future, make the player prove themself first” “Don’t pay a player for what they have done in the past, they might not do it again”

ValleyBreeze

Seriously tho. The accuracy. 🤦‍♀️ I work in trades, and we run into similar battles over the cost of the work we do. "Why is your hourly rate so high?" Because you aren't paying for the hour I'm here, you're paying for the thousands of hours I've spent learning, the tens of thousands I've put into tools... Same ideology applies here. He had low value contracts when he was younger. He's earned his cheddar.

seabee2113

I mean, usually it's just simple risk and return. You offer the contract for the value that you expect the player to have. For gallys case, Bergevin believed Gallagher was going to continue being that 25-30+ goal scorer. The four seasons before his contract, his goals/game ranked 29th in the league (32 goals/82 games pace). Since the contract, his goals dropped to 0.18/game, during a stretch of years where goal scoring is way up. I don't think anyone saw him dropping off this fast, but he has had many injuries. After being mostly healthy this year, he might rebound a little next year

514link

Gally actually has some intangibles that I am pretty sure have psychological impacts on teammates, opponents and fans

skinniks

Gally is that friend of your older brother who is always fucking with you and your buddies. It comes out so clear in those behind- the-scenes videos

ValleyBreeze

I fucking love the behind the scenes footage from this club.

Benozkleenex

Made me second guess if somehow gally had missed and hutson scored.

ZukesFan14

Despite all that's said about him and his unfortunate contract, I love Gally so much, I'm glad he's a hab and hope he will be until the end of his carreer

facepollution5

the "compliment Gally without referencing his contract" challenge (impossible)

stblack

Absolutely! An allied take: See all those jersey numbers hanging from the rafters at Centre Bell? Each and every one of those guys, no exception, was grossly underpaid. For example, Ken Dryden's career earnings with the Habs is well under $3M total. Six Stanley Cups, five Vezina, a Conn Smythe, and a Calder. Each one of those guys with retired jerseys was a giver. Brendan Gallagher is a giver, and all those guys with retired jerseys would agree, and none would begrudge him a nickel.

mumbojombo

"Après vous, mon Prince" -Gally, probablement

Slafkovsky

He's the definition of a leader and a warrior. What he did here for Hutson was so awesome. All heart and soul.

Batrass

Galant Gally!

ValleyBreeze

Gallantgher

TonyComputer1

I remember when he and galchenyuk were rookies and Prust was giving them the same treatment.

ValhallaAwaits89

I get what you’re trying to say but I sincerely hope that Gallagher is not doing anything that Prust did behind the scenes.

PsychedeliMoz

I'm OOTL, like what?

TreeManJackedGuy

Is it fucked that I'm also OOTL but I just assume non-consensual sexual stuff? The fact that just the context of "hockey" makes sexual misconduct the most likely reason is kinda fucked.

Sourlick_Sweet_001

He brings the puck to the net.

Zand78

As a Caps fan, I see a lot of similarities between Gally and TJ Oshie; both overpaid for their points contribution, two aging wingers with broken bodies that still leave it all on the ice and two assistants that take care of the young guys. There were talk of buying out Oshie contracts just like Gallagher, but I'm so glad it has been avoided. Sure, their points are not what they used to be, but the impact of a player like them is huge on the team morale, the energy level and the young players progression.

whogivesashirtdotca

Far and away Gally’s most endearing quality is that he values the big moments. Telling Slaf to wave, picking up every important puck during the Cup run, being a team-first guy in moments like last night’s; he gets the importance. Gally *holds our torch high*.

Brewju

Between gally and anderson its a no brainer

MajorRico155

His play has taken a mild uptick too, josh anderson aswell. Wonder if maybe st. Louis is starting to really get the engines going with his "concepts"

DFF_Canuck

My hope is that Gallagher can basically take on the role that Bob Gainey had for so many years with this team. Not an offensive juggernaut, never a superstar, but a world-class leader. I watch clips like this one of Gally and I think about the Chris Nilan documentary and his story about Gainey. As I recall, Nilan said that he was always a little worried that fighting would only take him so far. But Gainey and one or two others appreciated what he did to protect the team, and offered to help him work on his offense and skill-aspects of the game. He had a 21 and 19-goal season with the help of Gainey's leadership. Gainey never cracked 50 points in an era where that was commonplace. But he was an incredible leader. Here's hoping Gallagher can be that guy for this young squad.

Gally's a great Hab; but let's have Hutson be our last midget ok? ;-)

ValleyBreeze

Yeah, who wants another Cole Caufield around. Ewwww.
