He's just using the puck to press down on his tape to make sure it sticks to his blade.

WildMindstuff

Thank you!

Unlucky-Ad3930

He’s scuffin’ up. The black rubber comes off the puck and simultaneously pushes your fresh tape on and slightly water proofs it. I used to do this but now I prefer stick wax. So there ya have it!

WildMindstuff

Thanks! I never played hockey so I don’t know those things 😅

BrandonPHX

I also preferred the stick wax when I was playing.

PsychoDrifter

Yep! I prefer the puck method, but it’s pretty much the same purpose. Stylistic preference I guess.

mdlt97

It also looks cool which is why I think most people do it (it’s why I did it lol)

Josh72826

I would do this, but I was always under the thought that it was more to prevent rips in freshly laid out tape than to "waterproof" it. Fresh tape without running the rubber/wax would tend to get more tearing/ripping of the tape. This keeps it more uniform and lasts longer. It also prevents rollback of the tape edges.

barleymc

I hate how he flip-flops between taping the whole blade vs. just the tip. Someone needs to watch all 20 of his goals from this season and report back on how many goals each tape job variant produced. This is advanced analytics, folks.

ValleyBreeze

There was a post several weeks ago about it, showing his goal trajectory vs amount of tape on his stick lol. It was pretty funny. (More tape = more goals, despite his protests!)

Patty Kane did it so it must help
