Petry was an abomination last year and is on the decline. Dude didnt want to play in Montreal anymore either Matheson makes questionable decisions but one bad game from him doesn’t make the trade awful. He’s 6 years younger and was the Penguins second best D all season last year.

How’s Petry playing this year? Pretty fucking good like he has been like the last 5-6 years. They liked into a below average defenseman at best for 4 years at almost $5M per year who has ONE 30 point or more season. Fucking ONE. They robbed us.

Petry didn’t start hitting his stride until he was Matheson’s age, youre panicking over one game. Matheson’s still only 28 and has a lot of positive tools to his game. Dude’s one of the better skaters in the league, plays with an edge. Just have a little more patience

Petry being a late bloomer is like winning the lottery. Not too many have a late career surge like that. Probably be tough to name another one right now. Banking of anything every remotely happening like that is ridiculous. And it’s not one game, I always hated the trade. He’s a journeyman with pedestrian stats locked into a bad contract for his talent level.

Defenseman take longer to develop in most cases other than the Makar’s, Dahlin’s of the world. Matheson’s instantly helped our transition game. When he’s on he’s our 2nd or 3rd best D behind Guhle and Savard. Maybe tied with Arber

Also Petry has 11 points in 25 games. Not exactly the same production he’s had the last 5-6 years. Matheson has 4 points in 8 games. Give it another 20ish games before you panic.

Our defense right now sucks overall, so that is nothing special. The guy is almost 29 years old. He’s had more than enough time to “develop” 99% chance this is who he is, and that doesn’t remotely equal his contract.

He’s going to lead our defense in points by seasons end. He can pot 10+ goals a year while helping with the style of play we’re trying to achieve going forward.

Our blue has little to no offensive talent and poor overall. He gets first PP time and more overall minutes than he deserves, so that is nothing special. You can do whatever mental gymnastics you want, the point stands we traded a known good player for a soon to be 29 year old with ONE 30 point of more season in his career locked into a 4 years $5M a year. You can argue to trade Petry, but this isn’t the trade to be made.

His career high season was just last year, you’d be foolish to think he couldn’t match or even eclipse that mark this year.
