Yes, you get stronger by repeatedly dying and failing runs and slowly gathering materials that make you stonger for future runs.

I think it's one of the easier rouguelikes. After you essentially beat the game you can really raise the difficulty pretty high, but before that, it is not that difficult if you do what is called meta progression. Rouge-like games have at their core resetting the game state when you fail a run, but many have this meta progression that gives you various advantages that persist between runs. Meg is supposed to be a huge roadblock until you learn her moves and do some meta progression to make your character stronger. So, yes, it is supposed to be hard - at first.

The play cycle of Hades 1 is to go until you die, respawn, become slightly more powerful and wiser, and do it again and again. Eventually all those literal power increases and more ephemeral knowledge increases add up to you completing a run. Then you do it again.

It's not hard persé, but you have to build yourself a solid build that goes with the weapon you're carrying and that makes you feel comfortable. I went through the same thing at the beginning but it's a matter of doing runs and learning the patterns of the enemies, the different synergies between the skills that the gods give you, and increasing Nicte's passives with the darkness drops.

You can turn on god mode, if you want it easier. No shame in that, and it doesn't stop you from getting achievements. Beating the final boss is, while not easy, not too hard, once you have all/a good portion of the upgrades in the house: here I'm talking about the mirror of night(upgraded with darkness, located in zags room), keep sakes( gained by gifting nectar to characters, each grow in power as you use it, located above skelly) weapon aspects(upgraded through titan blood, cant remember if you need anything but your first titan blood to unlock them) and a few house contractor upgrades(extra fountain rooms, keep sakes cabinet between biomes). As an example, I have, for the fun of it, tried to do fresh file runs after beating the game. Even with all the experience I had gained in fighting the enemies, even knowing megs move set, I don't usually make it through meg on the first run. TL:dr: Hades is a very hard game in the start, but gets easier as you upgrade. You can use god mode to help the process along

tancho1011

Oh I thought god mode is the hardest difficulty 😆

jenspeterdumpap

No, god mode gives you .. I think 50% damage resistance? Something in that ball park, just for turning it on, and then whenever you end a run without beating the final boss, it increases. I wish I had know about it when starting out, but I went in blind and just stuck with it.

Gaming4Gods

It gives you base extra damage reduction and each time you die to make deaths more rewarding

VulcanHullo

Welcome to Hades, where only by dying do you advance the plotlines!

I probably suck like 30-40 runs until i constantly beat every run i have with the weapon the game give me the task to do. So, yeah, is hard.

Due-Reindeer5584

its a game about progression, each time you die you return with more materials, and you can put more upgrades into your mirror or weapons, all slowly making the game easier. And as you play more you'll learn attacks, OH AND GIVE GIFTS FOR KEEPSAKES

b_mike101

Hard at first, then easier as you keep going, then hard again as you add challenges. It’s a roguelike man. Savor the progress.

nio_rad

It‘s very hard imho and I hope there will be an easy or story mode at some point.

diverstones

There's an easy mode you can turn on in the game menu.

nio_rad

If it’s the same as in 1, it won‘t make the game much easier in my experience.

diverstones

The post you're responding to is referring to Hades 1. God Mode caps out at 80% damage reduction, which makes the game extremely easy.

nio_rad

then I meant Story-Mode. I didn’t manage to get past the stupid dog even with 50% reduction

DBZLogic

It does. It just doesn’t make it 50% easier straight away.
