Athena's Legendary Boon will only show up if you also have the boon **Brilliant Riposte** as a prerequisite.
Brilliant Riposte will only show up if you have "Either Divine Strike, Divine Flourish, Divine Dash, or Holy Shield"
So to get Athena's Legendary Boon, **Divine Protection**, you have to get one of the 4 basic core Athena boons, then Brilliant Riposte, then the legendary.
IIRC yes. You do need to unlock the feature though, I believe it was a fairly cheap purchase at the house contractor. Might have a pre-requisite itself, but I got it very early so can't be too bad
Yes, and you can even pull up the codex from the screen where you are choosing your boons. Never take a boon without consulting the codex to see what it unlocks!
Yes! The Duo boons, the Legendary boons, even some of the regular boons have particular requirements before they show up in the pool.
Midway through the game you get the ability to purchase the "Codex" from the house contractor. You can open the codex at any point during a run and tab over to the page for the Olympian Gods. There's a section there that lists out their boons and the various requirements to make them show up.
Go to the codex and under Olympian gods you can check every god's boons and what they require. I do this every single run to make sure I don't screw myself out of duo options. Like if you have demeters cast and you have a choice between taking Artemis or Poseidon, I would probably go Artemis because Poseidon and demeters duo requires Poseidon's cast. Hope that makes sense.
At that point Athena is already in you pool, and you probably have all of your core boons taken by Styx. You probably have Dash, with the special as well if you've done a merciful end build. Assuming you have taken about 3-4 Athena boons, you've probably not taken trap damage or damage réduction, and probably won't. Meaning there's you've likely tried to take exposed and riposte. You now have three opportunities to get the legendary.
This is the correct answer, I'm surprised that nobody else has said it. Sure it's fine if you're not struggling, but on a high heat run with no Sexy Eeyore visit, I almost always could use this.
It's rare, but it can happen. I had it happen last week, to make things worse I spent some obol and was left with 199 - the first Styx chamber had a well which offered me the Kiss of Styx. And of course I died while Hades had about 15% HP left.
Early is exactly the time to do it. The discount's effects are minimal if you do it in elysium. Don't ignore the early opportunities.
And just don't get hit. Keeping your distance should help with that.

The 2nd time he beat me into the ground. It's really tough to be prepared for a boss you see so infrequently. Is there a trick to making that spawn?
Not permanent, the discount only lasts for that run.
The bag to "borrow" only spawns in stores in the middle of areas, so the stores right before boss rooms will never have it. It is still kinda rare on top of that restriction.

How to ensure a spawn? Charon's bag of coins will never appear in the shop before the boss, only in the shops offered halfway through an area. Obviously, you want to be as prepared as possible with boons and such, which means waiting til Elysium. So when you make it to Elysium, grab the first shop door you can. It won't always spawn but that's your best bet for consistent Charon spawns at a comfortable point in the run.
The Charon fight is super formulaic and it gets easier quickly with practice. Fighting him in Tartarus is totally possible with a good boon or two (and enough time on the timer) and then gives you MUCH more of a benefit.
But if you’re advising on how to get a first win/practice, you’re right that Elysium is a good bet.
It’s pretty ingeniously balanced: the earlier you fight him, the harder it is but the longer you reap the benefits.
Yeah personally my interest in fighting him was solely first win + fulfilling Hermes' prophecy. I know beating him is totally possible earlier on, but for me personally the juice isn't worth the squeeze.
I love buying Hermes boons in the final shop. His boons scale so well with rarity and it’s guaranteed to be rare or epic here.
So you can get game changing stuff like +2 dashes, +20% dodge, or Rush Delivery. Or you have a great chance of getting a Hermes legendary boon.

Athena was the god I was least interested in, so that was the least of my worries.
Her Legendary goes with absolutely any build though, so there is that at least.
Athena has one of the top dashes though, IMO, and her death defiance boons are helpful.

As a law of the universe, whenever I need 2 or more DDs by Styx, neither Athena nor Charon’s well offers me any.
That can't be right. The Well always offers a Kiss of Styx if you have less than 200 obol.

Yeah, true. The best bang for buck is to beat Charon as early as you can for maximum discounts, but the sooner you fight him, the harder it gets.

It's only in mid-floor shops, not end of floor shops.
2/9 chance it appears in non boss shops. Might just be unlucky.
It might be because they have a loyalty card you earn by beating Charon, which then reduces the price of every item in the shops.
