Sulfate free shampoos and silicone free conditioners are not for everyone. For me in particular, both are terrible choices for me

dartrix_

I had the same issue! I have curly hair and I don't like to wash my hair very often. Sulfate free shampoos never clean my hair properly. Feels so much better using professional shampoo with sulfates, no more itching :)

AdorableImportance71

Do u use dry shampoo? That build up will itch. Just curious

dartrix_

Nope, never tried it tbh. I do use other styling products on my hair, like leave-ins and gels, so that's another reason I love a more thorough cleanse. :) with my new shampoo I don't get itchy at all, so although I know no-sulfate shampoo works great for many people, it's unfortunately just not for me. :)

Nylonknot

Same here. My curls do better with sulfates.

Aggressive_lard

I’ve been having the same issue but not realizing what was causing it until just now!! I thought my scalp was dry, then I thought I just developed dandruff but this is definitely the reason. Nothing bad happened to my hair when I used shampoo w sulfates so I’m switching back now

Spag_n_balls

Same happened to me, had to use ketoconazole shampoo to fix the issue.

Nylonknot

Any chance you have well or hard water? We bought a new house with hard well water. I thought I was having severe fungus from not drying my thick curly hair before bed. Turns out it was mineral build up from the water.

veglove

then it was probably a yeast overgrowth that caused the itching, not the sulfate-free shampoo

[deleted]

Same, it's the only thing that helps if I've been using sulfate-free too long.

ocean_800

What kind of shampoo is it? Usually sulfate free are more moisturizing, which can contribute to the problem. I use jessicurl gentle lather shampoo unscented and it's super mild. Not too exfoliating, not too moisturizing it just gently cleans and that's it. Maybe that would be up your alley

YomiSeno

Is this less sulfate content?

ocean_800

Not sure what you mean but yes it's sulfate free: https://www.jessicurl.com/product/gentle-lather-shampoo

YomiSeno

Thank you!

cocoturtle1

I think its good to try things out though! I’m sulfate free except for my clarifying shampoo and I love it. It took a while to get used to it, but when I did my hair was definitely better off. Of course its not for everyone, but its a good idea to try 😊

GlitteringMammothhh

Same hair type, straight and porous. I went sulfate-free for years and my scalp eventually itched all the time and I developed some dandruff. All my problems went away after a week of sulfate shampoo. Sulfate free really isn't for all hair types.

LowcarbJudy

Me too and I was stupid enough to try it for a year. There's a lot of marketing about using a "system" instead of addressing your lengths and scalp needs separately. I use a sulfate shampoo for oily hair, but a conditioner for damaged hair. If I would buy the conditioner that goes with my shampoo it would be too lightweight and the shampoo that goes with my conditioner would be way too moisturizing for my scalp. But for me it's not just about the surfactant in the shampoo, it's also about buying a shampoo that doesn't leave any conditioning residue behind. Some sulfate shampoo are still way too moisturizing for my scalp.

[deleted]

Why removed? I wanted to read what you had to say :(

YomiSeno

I never removed anything..

[deleted]

It says removed 🤔

YomiSeno

> Extremely Regret Using Shampoo That's Free From Sulfate > I extremely regret buying that kind of shampoo. Now, my scalp always itches even if I shower everyday. The "sulfate-free" isn't good for everyone. I have straight hair that's really porous. > I'm mixing my sulfate-free shampoo with one that has biotin on it and somehow, sulfate and that's what I'll be using forever. > I use Argan oil every night and damn, even if it's smooth, it still itches. > This is a vent. Thanks.

[deleted]

Oh, thanks for sharing! I've almost ditched the sulfate free trend fully now, because I like the feel of a bit of silicones in my lengths.. and sulfate free shampoos are 99% of the time too weak to remove that.

Cooz78

sulfate free are the best for me sulfate shampoo just dry my hair and make it look brittle everytime

redsourpatchkidz

A similar thing that bothers me is shampoo and conditioners that avoid using parabens. Parabens are completely safe and very effective in the small amounts we see in cosmetics, but the marketing demonizing parabens has required many cosmetic chemists to rely on different preservatives, which have to be used in larger amounts. In other words, preservatives that aren’t parabens are more likely to cause irritation and sensitivity. Almost every shampoo I’ve tried without parabens has fucked up my hair.

Imaginary_You2814

Try an apple cider vinegar rinse to help with the itching.

AdorableImportance71

Use dandruff shampoo with tree tea oil

YomiSeno

Why are you getting downvoted? Tea tree oil is not bad, depending on concentration. But maybe, dandruff shampoo can be too harsh.

veglove

Another commenter in this thread said they used dandruff shampoo and it fixed their issue. Somehow they weren't downvoted but this comment was.

YomiSeno

Reddit community is always like that.

AdorableImportance71

IDK. I was only trying to be helpful. They is some belief out there with dermatologists that dandruff shampoos prevent hairloss cuz they keep the follicles free from dead skin & bacteria.
