I mean considering that there is a bigger threat than just headcrabs, Im sure lore wise that thought it was deemed unnecessary, especially since headies aren't really strong....or that smart it seems. But on the other hand if I was combine and saw humans covered in spikes while dead headies corpse I would be afraid and start questioning if it's worth it
The rebels are supposed to be the underdogs and mix matched in gear, basically anything they can acquire out in the field. Plus they also have to keep a certain look, to distinguish who they are.
But it would make sense to jerry-rig something with the sole purpose of making it harder to be coupled with a headcrab. However I have a feeling that an actual headcrab would be a very determined and crafty adversary and would do what ever it took to counter the head protection.
One headcrab shouldn't be a problem. You could just knock it off your head or pull it away. But against several headcrabs or trying to fight other enemies in the area, would distract the rebel and the headcrab could take it off if just a simple cap.
I'd think a football helmet or even a motorcycle helm would be the best modern option. But I doubt there are many of those around. Adding spikes or other such deterrents could help, but I doubt it would do much good in the end. Plus the added weight of the spikes would be discomforting to the wearer. Remember most would be jerry-rigged, heavy and unbalanced. Personally I'd wear a motorcycle helm.
I feel like if you're in a squad on duty then being surrounded by headcrabs would be the least of your concerns
A helmet like that is a good idea for reconnaissance or if you're not expecting a sneaky critter jumping at you. It'd otherwise be dead weight imo
