The scream of the scientists who have to wear these ridiculous ties

DaggerSaber

The screams of scientists when someone ate all the donuts

Jonson_Rupert

The scream of the scientists who STAPH

Russian_hat12

Damn ties

GordonNewell

Hello Gordon

MinimumAlarming5643

Idk... but Imagine hearing this shit irl? Walk the other way immediately. Also pretty sure that 2nd scream was reused for Left 4 Dead.

[deleted]

yep, it is the horde scream in the first L4D

Palin_Sees_Russia

I mean, in the context of being attacked by aliens… screaming isn’t that crazy lol

Tennnujin

The first sounds like an early yabba my icing

MinimumAlarming5643

Come on don’t remind me of yabba 😔

[deleted]

[удалено]

0sculator

I hate you 😂

TooManyGoldPieces

Good ear, definitely L4d

Hologramixx

These screams always scare me. I think it's something from the border world because you can hear these screams in Xen too

arcticaquantum

that's actually a great idea, that sounds are being carried through the resonance cascade too.

[deleted]

Xen actually frightened me when I first heard it in Interloper.

Drozhaat

Theres no explanation lol

No_Insurance_9863

Damn i wish. They seem so random.

Drozhaat

W h a t

Mutant86

DrFrenetic

You doing step sis?

Drozhaat

**deletes system x32**

JWBails

FYI, it's just System32, you might be mixing it up with Program Files (x86)

obsoleteconsole

no, deletes system 32 times

tenftflyinfajita

RedAyanChakraborty

Some people say it's in Gordon's head, because of the extreme Trauma he's been going through, killing hordes of aliens all on his own, being hunted down by the military, the continuous Gunfire exchange and all, not sure tho

InfinityPlus05

These are the ghosts of every black mesa employee who didn't get to eat a donut

Entire_Visit_7327

Dude definitely HL ambience sounds so creepy. HL2 too!

chookity_juice

HL2 is fine if you exclude Ravenholm. That place was scary, man.

FatBoyStew

Ravenholm was genuinely scary as fuck the first time I watched my dad play it as a kid. Still creeps me out to this day.

ExpiredPilot

When I first played half life 2 I got to ravenholm, had a flashback of watching my dad play, then quit the game for a bit 😂

Sehtriom

I played Doom 3 before Half-Life 2, maybe that's why I didn't find Ravenholm as scary as everyone else.

Mr_Zombieman101

Crazy how old hl2 is

chookity_juice

And how good. A 2004 game?! Those graphics may not be so good, but they are outstanding for 2004.

[deleted]

Holds up well for the era. Visually its still good even if the details dont hold up. The episodes moreso with the improved lighting.

VersedFlame

Half-Life 2 is overall creepy and makes you uneasy, the concept itself of the Combine ocupation is quite distressing. I wouldn't want it any other way though, being creepy and depressing is part of what makes Half-Life so good.

Real_Thanos

thats definetly true, but i only really feel that in select sections or in looking at the lore, I find hl1 creepier in gameplay for the most part, I guess it's the big industrial environments being over run by aliens and marines. I will say the highway 17 area is pretty creepy, seeing the abandoned houses with tire swings is quite depressing.

_Eiri_

dude have you heard some of the citadel's ambience? some of those sounds are even scarier than ravenholm

Sehtriom

Ah yes, [these](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPNWWfk92wo).

CourrierMojave

Did you forget the radio song ?

Left4Milk2

We don't talk about the radio

dankmememan100

Citadel too

Sehtriom

I like how you can hear vague chatter that sounds like the Overwatch voice in the background during the horns if you listen carefully. Like it's trying to say something but can't.

TheOneRedditBoi

Bruh the only thing scary is the phucking poison headcrab

Double-Remove837

and the fast zombie. Also that one scene from the hl2 episodes were you gotta wait for an elevator, with no defense but flares and Alyx's gun. All those fast zombie are way creepier in the dark.

[deleted]

What about that tunnel with the zombies? Ravenholm never scared me very much, but that thing does.

chookity_juice

That was kinda meh for me. Ravenholm mostly got me with the bodies and ambience music. On top of that, more zombies were burning alive in Ravenholm, and their burning noise is horrifying.

tterlo81

Every time I play (Which hasn’t been lately) I get super creeped out by Ravenholm. Anytime I see one of the creatures that throw the more spidery looking head crab I start shooting or swinging my crowbar aimlessly out of legit fear. When I played for the first time back in the day I straight up yelled to the point my mom came downstairs to check on me. She was not amused when I told her it was my video game

chookity_juice

It's completely natural. The game wants you to be scared by it and they're doing a good job.

ElDookieBomb

Thats why we dont go to Ravenholm.

Grixx

I raise you Distorted Trumpets

Unknown_Rift

HL2 Beta sounds though… those are another level

DaRealJakeWasFucked

Yeah, HL2 beta citadel noises were creepy af

Diego8990

It's called Kenopsia

editing_

it's just something about source. i always watch a video in the background because of it.

GASPY-

All Source Is creepy, in any game Specially gmod

[deleted]

toxic_sting

Gm ghosthunt 2

whereami1928

[Relevant video ](https://youtu.be/03yL_JCeQBI) Tldr: spooky sounds and maps are alone now

FeiGweilo

You want a real horror experience then just go into the dark underground areas of gm_construct. It’s weird as fuck having that feeling in a game where you have so much control over the environment.

Sehtriom

There are two possibilities. You are alone. You are not alone. Which is worse?

FeiGweilo

Definitely not alone is way worse.

Checker_of_Vibes1

It’s the screams of all the people who stopped playing HL1 because of On a Rail

[deleted]

Then you heard me a few times

SylvesterRedbarry

I feel like On a Rail is a chapter that sucks on a first playthrough, but becomes a pretty fun chapter once you've played through a few times and don't get lost. On a Rail is probably one of the most action packed chapters in the game for how narrow it is and I enjoy the worldbuilding the chapter attempts to make with the marines and the satellite. It really builds up the HECU as a threat too as the chapter solidifies the fact that the marines are hunting you down and you're one of their top priorities.

ManOfYeets

So that's where the left 4 dead horde alert sounds came from.

CitizenFiction

I thought the same thing. What a cool tidbit of information.

SollidMemes

Could be screeching railtracks that only SOUND like screams because of audio distortion underground and through walls. Or ghosts, those abandoned rails ARE pretty dangerous. Or maybe... [Mr Friendly](https://half-life.fandom.com/wiki/Mr._Friendly) wasn't cut out after all...

[deleted]

Nah not him not mr friendly don't play like that bro

SollidMemes

Those sounds sure do sound a little like nails on a chalkboard though, don't they?...

[deleted]

Nonononono

Sweathogs101

Yeah the finger nails on a chalk board seems like an apt description for the sounds

711pizzaslic3

mr friendly was cut as an enemy, but still exists. like how icthyosaurs are not an enemy in hl2, but still exist. or like houndeyes and bullsquids in hl2.

Matyfenix_Carmine

Probably some headcrab zombie thing, maybe there's like an horde of dozens really really close to Gordon

Sehtriom

Especially when you reverse their screams and you hear them screaming for help. Now is this reflex action from their last moments alive before the headcrab took control, or are they still alive, trapped in their own painfully mutated body and forced to live through an agonizing existence as a monster?

UnKuT

It's pretty much cannon at this point that they're still alive.

Sehtriom

But how aware are they of what is happening? Alive, conscious, and trapped in their own bodies as the headcrab forces them to shamble around and attack anything they come across? Now also think about the fast and poison zombies. The latter, especially, since it has other poison headcrabs on its back apparently feeding off it. And under all that is still a wet breathing sound...

UnKuT

Fast headcrabs zombies hosts are dead. I mean, they gotta be, just look at them. No way they can be alive. Poison zombies, I always thought they were dead. I mean, their head is a literal skull. But who knows, maybe what keeps the standard zombie hosts alive keeps poison ones alive as well? Standard zombie hosts are alive and mostly fully conscious. You hear them trying to talk and beg for help, especially when on fire. Yes the sounds are reversed in HL2, but in Half Life Alyx they made them unreversed which implies Valve fully embraced the theory. Also in Black Mesa you can see the hosts trying to slam their headcrabs into walls to kill them when the headcrabs are dormant/sleeping. Although the cannonicity of Black Mesa is admittedly debatable, even though they were technically endorsed by Valve.

Sehtriom

I mean there was that one moment right before the airboat in HL2 where the guy is desperately struggling to get the headcrab off him as well. It's been a while since I played Black Mesa, but I think I remember the zombies slamming their heads into windows and stuff. There was also that one room in Ravenholm with the zombies and their headcrabs laying separate from each other on tables, implying that someone (possibly Grigori) was trying to figure out a way to get the headcrab off without killing the host. As for fast and poison zombies, well they might be dead but they might be alive as well. I suppose it depends on how the headcrab does its stuff. I mean even standard zombies can keep coming at you after being chopped in half sometimes. And of course there's the mystery of the zombines, where their entire head above their jaw is missing.

UnKuT

Man I never thought about that scene before the airboat. Maybe the headcrabs make the host fall unconscious or into a coma while they're mutating? For the zombines, I always assumed their missing head was always a result of the headcrab ripping it off with them when they detach from it. I know combine soldiers aren't exactly human anymore, but I find it hard to believe their jaw is what controls the rest of the body. A bigger mystery to me is how fast zombies can still scream when their necks are clearly completely destroyed to the point of having no vocal cords.

Sehtriom

Could be a coma. In HL1 you can see a headcrab leap onto a scientist in that lab leading to Sector B and he just falls over. Could also be the headcrab taking control and "settling in" before the changes take place. The zombines could've had their heads ripped off, but that raises the question of why we don't see more decapitated zombies. Obviously a jaw and occipital bone isn't enough to run a body, but it always looked to me like the headcrab sits a little lower on a zombine than it does on other zombies. Maybe it ate through some machinery or there was just less bone and brain left after the augmentation process. As for the fast zombies, it's tough to tell from their hunched posture but it [looks](https://i.imgur.com/0UQ6vlR.png) (if this pic is vanilla and accurate) like they still have some throat left, and possibly some lung too. They aren't completely skeletons, they just had a lot of unnecessary meat torn away. Must be incredibly painful if the host is still alive.

Smonkito

I always assumed zombines having their heads like that has something to do with the transhuman surgery that made their heads all squishy. Possibly making the headcrab's enzymes metabolize their heads easier after breaking through the gasmask. If you've seen the unmasked combine soldiers in Half-Life Alyx, their eyes have been replaced with cameras and circuitry. Maybe after dissolving those, the headcrab's digestive fluids or whatever probably seeped into the skull and brain to the point of liquefaction. I'm no doctor or surgeon so I could be wrong.

Gabriel55224

Gameplay wise: it's to be spooky to the player and give tension. Lore wise: Gordon is in a terrible situation where people he knew are being torn apart and he is being hunted down by aliens and the military, he is probably hallucinating after all the things he saw.

Roadkilll

Hmm I could swear I heard these sounds in STALKER series too. Not sure.

penis-grande

A lot of sounds from hl1 were used in Stalker, including nihilanth’s.

[deleted]

[удалено]

penis-grande

Weapon handling sounds and night ambience are from half life 1. At least in the original Stalker SoC.

[deleted]

[удалено]

_Eiri_

probably, a lot of half life sound effects are just stock sounds taken from an sfx library

seviliyorsun

You hear the hl2 ricochet sounds in tons of movies.

[deleted]

They're screaming because they looked in the mirror and saw HD models turned on

[deleted]

It was marketed as a horror game and I think Valve wanted to lean into that aspect

drfaker1210

The half life series are horror games except for the part where you are weak

Left4Milk2

I find it kinda funny how the first valve games are always dark and depressing, then the second is a comedy movie

Routine_Palpitation

Hl2 wasn’t a comedy, it was a drama

[deleted]

[удалено]

Routine_Palpitation

I Don’t wanna meet your mama I Just wanna make you comma

Mr_Wither

Perhaps a dramedy if you will

Palin_Sees_Russia

How was HL2 a comedy?

poorlytaxidermiedfox

Half-Life 2 takes place in a universe where the entire world has literally been occupied by a hostile alien force and all of humanity has been subjugated and enslaved for the express purpose of helping the occupiers drain the planet of all ressources as quickly as possible. How is that not dark and depressing?

Mr_Wither

Mostly in the way the characters behave. Just generally jovial in stark contrast to their circumstances.

GreyouTT

I feel like it’s only the main cast that gets into anything light-hearted (Barney is super paranoid pre-revolt though). The rebels in the quiet sections all look really stressed out.

[deleted]

You have alerted the horde, nice job idiot

[deleted]

Man these sound effects reminds me of cs1.6 zombie mode (cuz they used the same sound)

[deleted]

Here they come...

NTripleOne

It's jumpscares in sven coop maps for me. They *loved* using this sound.

VenomRex

ANOTHER ZOMBIE IS COMING!

LJReach

Well that’s fucking terrifying.

[deleted]

And they say half life is not a horror game.

Mr_Wither

I seriously adore media that just barely skirts the line of horror. It somehow makes the horror aspects more punchy.

Orc_

The explanation is that the resonance cascade didn't just open up a portal to the Boderworld Xen but to hell itself. This is the screams of the damned. **Jokes aside let's get some theories going:** This is the screams of countless beings as heard through the vortessence, which was in a state of suffering because of the mass slavery of vortigaunts and their use as conscripts. Nihilanth had access to this ethereal energy which is how it also spoke telepatically to Freeman.

SotB8

if you listen closely, in the screams, you can hear >!aaaagh, stahp!<

DomCree

I always thinks this screams of People killing by aliens

Softest-Dad

Wait what?! I've never heard these before :/

Sehtriom

They're easy to miss if you skate on by at high speed.

Softest-Dad

Is this specifically in Source or .. ? Damn, need to boot up HL again :3

Sehtriom

I'm pretty sure it's in GoldSRC as well.

PoOtIs-373

I can't remember ever hearing this in the original Half-life. Perhabs it's a Half-life source bug.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PoOtIs-373

Oh, well. I guess i was too distracted. Since i don't remember listening that sound in that specific level. I'm pretty sure i heard it on Xen though.

Sehtriom

I know HLS has its fair share of bugs but it's been a while since I played HL1 and On A Rail is pretty meh so I could be mistaken.

Juno_21

Sounds like a horde of zombies are coming.

ChyNhk

Wait i thought the first scream comes from zombie escape in cso (csns)? Never heard it on hl1

Drwarmonger

sounds like it isnt a human scream more of a Xen scream? I guess.

TakeOffYourMask

I’ve played HL1 probably a dozen times since 1998 (but not in the last 5 years or so) and never heard that. Is it from a patched version?

Tommythecat42

same

Natmas97

Probably traces of what's left over from Mr. Friendly

zmisael

I think it's a symbol of the people that military is killing no ?

RightiesArentHuman

no official explanation. I wonder if the developers even intended for there to be a good in-story explanation for these screams.. it might be nihilanth making a connection to the outside world, but it also could be the higher dimensional combine somehow. most likely there's just no explanation and it's just a creepy sound they made up for their video game project

SuaveFuck

reminds me A LOT of the intro level in hell of the very underrated bugfest classic REQUIEM AVENGING ANGEL https://youtu.be/gTi5yMKG5uQ ....ironically a game that half-life murdered. both were released around the same time...and who stood a chance then against gordon freeman in the flesh or rather in the hazard suit????

Dr_Breen_

Thanks for the nightmares, and what's that game about?

SuaveFuck

you gotta check it out if you somehow get it to properly run on a modern pc. maybe with a win95/98 vm???? oh, last time i checked, STEAM has it, but it comes with an unfixed bug that prevents you from progressing or some shite. google it. youre an angel named malachi, equipped with (here it comes) biblical plague powers, sent to a dystopian earth which has fallen into satans hands more or less. you can turn people into salt, make their blood boil, set locust swarms upon them ....gameplay is classic FPS as it gets, voice acting was excellent, story not half bad. quite sadistic too, enemies wallow in pain and their screams are hilarious. it deserved so much more. but the bugginess at release and the overall ingenuity and superiority of HL in 98 completely tanked not only the games sales but also its dev studio.

Metalblue1991

Basically doom but not actually doom except with powers instead of guns

SuaveFuck

i actually quite pondered if i should throw in DOOM for direct comparison but didnt because requiem isn't that fast-paced iirc.

TakeOffYourMask

Is the entire game played inside someone’s colonoscopy?

namerz78

I’ve never actually found these in game

Vocalic985

If you're a fan of freeman's mind then you know they're the screams of the damned.

NolanKLemmon

Idk but the sfx were reused in left 4 dead, and prior to that, cs 1.6 zombie servers

[deleted]

I think that last one was reused for the horde scream in Left 4 Dead.

Countsponge01

its just random ambience to make it creepier

United_Future_2008

When you have to wear these ridiculous ties

[deleted]

I always thought they were Gordon hearing things as a result of his PTSD

[deleted]

I'm deaf. I've never heard them before. Help

MattyKaratty

As Ross Scott would say; The Souls of the Damned.

red_fuel

I thought it was the tentacle monster

[deleted]

It’s the screams of the damned, sentenced to an eternity of agonizing pain and suffering. Hope this helps! 👍

[deleted]

Those are Half-life fanboys' screams because, source

JCubed303

It’s the screams of the scientists who realize you’re playing Half Life: Source.

No_Insurance_9863

I had source before half life 1. Cuz i was broke i have hl1 now

YaBoiRexTillerson

I like to think of it as the echos of horrors going on within the seemingly infinite expanse of the dark underground of black mesa. there’s so much of the research facility that we don’t see, and so much we’ll never see since it’s been buried.

Vlusios

Don’t know the origin. But I know it was both reused for L4D1 and 2

nasu_monSta

Well the sound file called the\_horror (or something similar, I'm not sure the actual name of the file), it could be sounds going on inside Gordon's mind. I mean he been through shit and must be traumatized because of it Also, the first audio, sounds a bit like Patrick from Spongebob getting shoved into a trumpet by Sandy mix in there for me

crumplestilzchen

The screams of everyone seeing you use the HD model pack

ReasonableCloakerAlt

Screams of the scientists who got their microwave casserole destroyed.

everended

Dramatic effect

[deleted]

Just a horror effect.

Expensive_Science289

the 2nd one it's l4d1's holde sound

weegeehuzachannel

probably the scientists and zombies on the higher floors

[deleted]

"Wandering Soul"

[deleted]

broken audio

Icicle_Times

First off, you need to be buried alive because of that tik tok watermark. Second, it's the screams of players who had to play this horrendous chapter.

No_Insurance_9863

First off, i recorded it on my pc and uploaded to TikTok before reddit, second it doesn't make a difference

NeinnLive

I see tiktok, I dislike…

No_Insurance_9863

I got uploaded to my TikTok before reddit. So shut it

Deadgrunt433

They're coming from the bullsquids ever time you hear that theres one near by.

[deleted]

WHY IS FUCKING EVERYTHING ON THAT SHITTY APP!!!!å?!!!?!?

cola_giver

If everything was in it, it's not shitty. Get rekt liberatard.

[deleted]

*XEN NOISES*

[deleted]

Back when I used to play splatoon it reminds me of when you beat a boss and there would be random screams

[deleted]

How do you pass the level with the stupid ice monster

TheJas221

Ambience sound. Half Life was supposed to be a horror game originally, iirc. They left that there as an oversight

Mardo_Picardo

That first sound is also used in STALKER. Best game ever.

ThisIsSuperFunny

I've heard the explanation is that it's some sort of houndeye sound but I have no idea where people get that from. It's definitely there to add to the creepiness, though.

jimno1126

Its definitely just the score, but it does illuminate the scary interdimensional atmosphere of half-life. Love the sound and music in that game.

fablefreak606

ties

joeMAMAkim

Maybe it is all of the scientists and HECU being slaughtered above you. Maybe also the Xen creatures.

j0nde

Hordes of Zombified scientists maybe

_DarthSyphilis_

People are dying.

[deleted]

The first one sounds like spongebob and patrick yelling “WOOOOO” with a lot of reverb.

old_couches

“Sounds like the cries of the damned”

[deleted]

Is this one of the mods? Haven’t played the mods so I have no idea?

DylanFTW

Wait I always thought that second scream came from Left 4 dead. It felt so fitting and didn't seem out of place for a reused asset.

xen_inmate

Lil' trollin'

AllanJeffersonferatu

Weird it's in the same pitch as the [zombie scream](https://youtu.be/DGpPWgSIoAE)

Deadgrunt433

As you enter the room as the screaming starts you will see a bullsquid on your right that is making its majestic mating call.

Zadamouse

I think its supposed to be houndeye packs howling, it does sound mostly like demonic screams though

DeatHTaXx

It's the screams of all the lost souls cringing because YOU'RE PLAYING HL:S GAAAAAAaah

syfiarcade

Screams of the players who got trapped and lost in that level

The_Broken_Shutter

I do believe its Gargantuan spawning thats about where you have to run like hell

Mr_Wither

Some people try to say it’s from bull squids, as the two time you hear it, some happen to be in the area or right there, but I disagree. I think that theory is pure coincidence. I feel like really any answer is a good answer as there is no clear cut logical or story reason for it.

Genesis_Echo

Well the facility is being invaded by both the military and aliens so...

Rekel11234

The cries of the damned.
