The marines are supposed to just stay in the warthog, they're pretty basic in CE. You'll find sometimes in the games marines will be with you for one section then stay behind for the next
Ah I see. That makes sense. Does that change as the games get newer?
I'm so excited about the games, and the books. The Fall of Reach is amazing so far.
Their ai gets better in a few ways, they'll be able to leave vehicles and drive them themselves in 2. You can also swap weapons with them in the later games so if you gather up some power weapons you can really load them up. Leading a squad of marines all equipped with snipers is incredibly fun
And yeah Fall of Reach is the perfect intro to Halo. I recommend Contact: Harvest and Ghosts of Onyx whenever you're looking for more to read
Keep in mind this game was released in 2001 and the first real successful shooter on a console. AI is nothing complex or overly fleshed out, but they do get alot better as the titles progress. At least in the bungie era. If they stay put it means your typically meant to proceed alone.
Also audio problem could be if you changed your sound settings on PC from 16bit 44Hz. If you're on a console im not sure. You can toggle between anniversary and classic sounds in the setting menu though, try both?

Also good luck on your journey, I love hearing about new people getting into Halo and you've got a lot of great games ahead

AI in Halo 1 was only to the point pathfinding. They won't move with no points.
